Fifteen

The Heart's Choosing

“JB?” I said, peeking behind the gym door.

“Soo Jin-ah!” JB yelled, running to me.

He grabbed my wrist and drug into the middle of the room.

“Yahhh~ you know we’re missing lunch, right?” I said, shaking my shoulders.

He chuckled and placed his hands on them.

“Yah, if today goes as planned, I promise I’ll buy you a huge dinner later.” He said, cheesing.

“Jjinja!?” I squealed, before realizing the rest of the sentence.
“If it goes as planned?” I asked, tilting my head.

He nodded, and placed his hands in his pockets.

I looked at him, as we stood there in silence.
The air was a bit awkward, which was weird.
He kept looking at the ground, as if he wanted to say something, but couldn’t.

I cleared my throat, trying to break the silence.

“Ya-”

“Let’s date.”

Wha- Did I hear him right?

He finally looked up at me, with eager eyes.

“Soo Jin-ah, I want you to be my girlfriend.”

I quickly shook my head, snapping myself back to reality.

Smacking his shoulder, I laughed.
“Yah, stop joking! You almost gave me heart attack!”

He grabbed my hand, and continued to keep that serious look on his face.
“I’m not joking, Soo Jin.”

I immediately wiped my smile away, and felt my breaths becoming irregular.

“Yah...”

He quickly cut me off and pulled me into a hug.

“Soo Jin, we’ve been best friends for so long, and we’ve always been inseparable.” He said, tightening his grip. “That moment I made that stupid mistake to let you walk away was the moment I realized that I needed you.”

My heart was racing, and my cheeks felt like they were on fire.

“When I saw you with Chunji, for the first time, I felt jealous. Then you two started dating, and my heart felt like it was being ripped apart. It was such a foreign feeling; I didn’t know what to do.”

I grabbed onto his shirt, clenching the fabric.

“Jae Beom-ah…”

He pulled away, resting his hands on my shoulder.

“I’m sorry… for all the pain I’ve caused you.” He said, cupping my face.
“Let me make up for all of my stupid mistakes and all of your heartbreak, as your boyfriend.”

I felt a tear roll down my cheek, and I placed my hands on top of his.

“I want to protect, care, and love you more than I ever could as your best friend. You’re my soul mate, Soo Jin-ah. You’re the one my heart chose.”

I couldn’t help but to bawl.

Here he was–
my best friend;
the guy who broke my heart;
the guy I loved.

“Hey, hey,” He said, wiping my tears.
“Shh…” He pulled my head to his chest, my hair.

“Idiot…” I mumbled.
“It took you this long to realize how fabulous I am?”

He chuckled, ruffling my hair.
“Ya, don’t be so conceited or I’ll take back-”

"You know, it's not going to be easy." I said, breaking away from him.

"I know," He replied, keeping his arms around my waist.
"But I'm going to do whatever it takes to make us work."

I smiled.

“I also promise to do whatever it takes to make us work.” I said.
“Because you too, are the one that my heart chose, Im Jae Bum.”

He gave me a matured smile, before smashing his lips unto mine.

2 YEARS LATER

"Soo Jin-ah!!!"

I glanced up and saw Chunji running towards me.
I quickly shot up from the seat I was in, and ran to JB's dressing room.

As I slammed the door behind me, everyone in the room looked at me with confusion.

"Chunji." I simply said.

"Ah~" they all said in unison, then went back to what they were doing.

I made my way to the seat JB was in, and wrapped my arms around his neck.

"Is he bothering you again?" He asked, looking at me through the mirror in front of us.
"You know, it's been two years Soo Jin."

"Exactly." I said, removing myself from him when the make-up artist came to us.
"The last time we talked, was when he left me in that damn class room 2 years ago. With no explination."

"Well, maybe now you can get an explination from him." He said, with his eyes closed.
"Since he obviously wants to talk to you now."

"Hmph." I sighed.

"I'm sorry noona, but can you give us a sec?" JB asked the make-up lady.

She nodded and moved to the member beside us.

He turned to me, and grabbed my hands.
"Babe, we're adults now. You should go talk to him."

"You're right..." I said.
"I think I need to settle everything."

He nodded, and pulled my hands forward, taking my body with them.

"That's my girl." He said, before pecking my lips.
"Now, hurry up! I think they go on stage next."

"!" I hissed, giving him a quick peck, before dashing out the door and to the stage.

As I entered the entrance to the stage, I spotted Chunji and his group waiting for the current performance to end.
I ran towards the group of guys, with whatever energy I had left.

"Chunji!" I yelled, heavily panting.

He turned around, along with the rest of s.

"Soo Jin-ah!" He said in surprise.

"Oh ho~ Who's this, hyung?" The group's maknae asked.

"Shut up, Ricky.  It's not like that." Chunji said, punching his arm.

I furrowed my eyebrows at his answer.

"Not anymore." I said, grabbing their attention.

"Hey, can we talk real quick?" I asked him.

He looked over to his group, asking for permission from his leader.

"You've got like, 5 minutes until they call us up, so make it quick." His leader said.

"Arasso, hyung." Chunji replied, taking my hand and leading me behind the stage.

"You're not gonna run away, right?" He asked.

I rolled my eyes.

He chuckled, and swept his bangs aside.
"I'm just kidding."

"Why?" I asked.

"Hm? Why what?" He said, clueless.

"Why do you suddenly want to acknowledge me again, after two years?" I said, irritated.

His smile faded, and he dropped his head.

"Soo Jin-ah, that-"

"You left me without giving me a reason." I cut him off.
"You made me look stupid!"

He remained quiet, not knowing how to respond.

"You just shut me out and left me alone, Chunji. You were my best friend! You were my boyfriend for godsake! Do you know the hell I went through because I didn't have you next to me?"

"You had JB." He said, keeping his eyes on the ground.

So this was what it was all about.
That's what he meant that day.

I unconciously let out a light chuckle.

"So you just up and left me, becasue of JB?" I asked.

He slowly brought his eyes back up to me.
"I did it so that you could open your eyes, Soo Jin. So that both of you could open your eyes."

"You know you're an idiot, right?" I said.
"You didn't have to be so over dramatic if you wanted me to realize something like that."

He chuckled, and rubbed his neck.
"I know. I realized that I may have gone too far with my plan."

I reached out and head-locked him.

"You're lucky that we're adults now, and that I'm so forgiving." I said, ruffling his hair.

"Hyung! We're about to go on." Ricky informed the both of us.

"Okay." Chunji said, as I released him.

"Go." I said.
"Put on a great performance."

He smiled and nodded, making his way to the stage.

I stood there, watching the boys perform, when I felt a pair of arms snake around my waist.

"I take it everything went well?" JB said into my ear.

"Mhm." I replied, placing my hands on top of his.
"Everything went great."
