Epilogue: Sunrise
Santa Quaranta
MMLXII / XXVII
The waves softly crash into Haneul’s feet, the blue of the sea contrasting the white of her skin. She sits in front of the ocean, waiting for the sun to rise. She takes her time to appreciate the last remaining minutes of the night and basks in the silence before the break of dawn.
It’s her and the universe.
Her and peace.
Her bliss intensifies when the first rays of sun shine through the sky and the waves that crash into her feet make her feel warm. She stands up, deciding to take a walk along the seaside. She turns her profile to the rising sun. Her house is just behind her.
Something feels different.
She takes a look over her shoulders. Nothing out of the ordinary.
But she can feel she’s not alone.
She turns her head and squints her eyes. She sees movement in her line of vision and she’s certain there’s someone walking in her direction.
She stays still and waits.
Heart thumping in her ears.
Maybe her eyes are playing tricks on her. It’s been too long.
