[07] Bad habits
Santa Quaranta
Haneul’s days are plagued by thoughts of what had happened at the party. She certainly wants to forget about that day, but her brain insists on replaying the scene of her falling in the stranger’s arms over and over again. How can she forget if all she does is think about it?
Kibum calls her out one day.
“I’m sure I’d spend my days thinking about falling into the arms of a handsome man, but you need to snap out of it and eat. I didn’t cook for you to leave it on your plate until it becomes cold,” he nags at her. He called her over for lunch after having cooked a variety of dishes. He was in a good mood that day.
“Kibum, I’m going crazy, aren’t I?” She asks her friend.
“If you continue this behavior, it will happen sooner rather than later.”
“I don’t know why I’m being like this. It’s not like me to think so much of someone I don’t know.”
“Would you be happier if I told you his name?”
Haneul rolls her eyes. “Happier, he says.”
“Well, happier. Have you seen your face lately? Anna rightfully asked me how we hang out this much when you look so disconnected all the time.”
“She was just being curious. Everybody knows she wants you all to herself so that you can gossip all the time. What kind of life is that?”
“The kind that knows who the dancer in the dark is,” Kibum says pointedly, giving her a challenging look.
“Oh, don’t give me that look,” Haneul explodes.
“What look? The do-you-want-to-know-look?” Kibum feigns innocence.
“Exactly. I don’t want to know.”
“He goes by the name of Kai.”
Haneul is silent for a moment. “You know you have a bad habit of giving more information than asked, right?”
“And you have a bad habit of only selectively listening to me, yet I put up with that and still call you my best friend. I guess we really can’t have it all, not even in this life,” Kibum exaggerates with a sigh.
That brings a slight smile to Haneul’s face. He has a point, but she won’t admit that out loud.
Kibum insists on going to a karaoke room. He claims he hasn’t sang in a long time and neither has Haneul. Truth be told, she didn’t want to go to a club, let alone the Mile High Club, as he had suggested some time ago. Even though there is a selected crowd that goes there, she doesn’t feel comfortable at all. She has to dress a certain way and put on heavy make-up; things she doesn’t quite like.
She enjoys going to the karaoke room, though. Just like Kibum, she had missed being able to sing and for the night, she simply lets go and has fun. They sing a variety of songs, from sappy, romantic ones to whatever Kibum is in the mood for. He’s actually a very good singer himself and sometimes he also performs at various clubs, but he says he enjoys it more when he sings together with Haneul.
It’s almost half an hour to midnight when Kibum decides that he’s sang enough. He has also had a bit too much to drink, so his feet are wobbly when they exit the karaoke room.
“Haneul, hold me. I’m drunk,” he states the obvious to his best friend.
“I would hold you if you’d slow down.”
Even though Kibum asks for her help, he simply marches forward at a speed that shouldn’t be allowed for a drunk person. Haneul can already feel a headache starting to form. It will be a long night for her.
She finally catches up with Kibum and tries holding him, not trusting his drunk self to continue any further than where he has come.
“Shin Haneul, you came. What took you so long? Am I running a marathon here or what?”
Haneul has no answer for that. “Another bad habit, you talk too much when drunk.”
“But you still love me, right?”
Haneul rolls her eyes. “And that is my bad habit.”
Kibum just laughs and
