WEDNESDAY
I brought Victoria to the library today. She asked if I had books back on my ship that she could read. I told her the books my men have under their beds are indecent. She looked at me as if she understood what I meant. Victoria told me that she fancies reading books that sunk along with ships, but the books she had a chance to retrieve are permanently ruined, or the pages are torn. It surprised me that mermaids like her can read the alphabet, but then again, we speak the language. I told her that she was brilliant, and in return, she gave me a shy smile.
As per usual, I provided her with clothes when we went to the town. We arrived at the library around four in the afternoon. There were not many people in the library, but all of them were busy with what they were doing, which meant that Victoria could let her guard down around humans for a while. She grabbed books such as The Ballad of Reading Gaol by Oscar Wilde, A Natural History of English Gardening, and a dictionary that was thick as a log that I carried for her. Victoria spoke little to me while she was reading. She would only call for my attention when she wanted me to elaborate on specific phrases or words that she was not entirely familiar with.
