It's You
Stay With MeHyukjae followed Yesung into his home even though there were still a million questions running in his mind about the whole ordeal. Was Yesung really a psychic? Did he really have a guardian angel? Has he met that angel? Why tell Yesung? Was it to help him or is this some sort of test he needs to pass? If he fails...what does that mean? Is he gonna get punished again or will they just take him away from Donghae again before he could even start?
"You're really as transparent as they say," he heard Yesung speak which snapped him out of his head.
Hyukjae frowned a little and tilted his head to the side in question. "I'm sorry...'they?'"
"Well, I've met a few of your friends from the cemetery," Yesung casually informed as though it was an absolutely normal thing to say. "Of course I didn't tell them what happened to you - it's a whole ordeal and I wouldn't want to upset the balance of things - but the little girl, umm...what was her name...oh! Jihae! She says she misses you a lot and wished she could have said goodbye before you..., you know," Yesung used his hand to finish the rest of his sentence.
Hyukjae's eyes widened a little as he recalled his rash decision to cross over and with everything that's happened, he didn't even have the time to think about how Jihae or the kind halmeoni he befriended when he was ghost were doing. He bit his lower lip, guilt slowly creeping up within him. Maybe he should go and visit them...would he be able to see the spirits like before?
"You're not gonna find them there anymore," Yesung informed as though he could read Hyukjae's mind. "Jihae crossed over last year after her parents visited her grave with her new baby sister. Her unfinished business was done and halmeoni...well, let's just say she's not exactly a spirit of your level."
Hyukjae didn't know what that meant but he was glad nevertheless that at least Jihae was able to cross over as well. That means there's a chance that he could meet her reincarnated spirit at some point later on...given that he succeeds in his mission here on earth.
"Umm...Ye-Yesung-ssi..." Hyukjae hesitantly called, still not completely comfortable with his presence. "Can I ask you a question?"
"You just did." Yesung joked then laughed when he saw Hyukjae look down, trying not to show his annoyance at him. "I'm just kidding. Go ahead."
Hyukjae looked up and this time made sure to choose his words carefully. "What...are you exactly?"
"I told you. I'm a psychic."
"Yeah but..." Hyukjae paused trying to make sure he wouldn't accidentally offend Yesung in any way. "Why are you helping me? What's in it for you?"
Yesung raised a questioning brow at him then crossed his arms and leaned against the wall. His body completely relaxed as he tried not to show too much of his teasing smile at Hyukjae. "Why? Do I need to have an incentive to want to help someone else?"
"Uh...well, no...I guess not."
Yesung could tell that there was something else bothering Hyukjae so he asked him what was really on his mind. "I promise I don't bite. Just say it." Hyukjae gave him a blank look and Yesung chuckled seeing such innocence radiate from him. "Tell me what's bothering you. Do I look evil to you?" He joked just to lighten the mood a little. "I even dressed down for you. I rarely wear this pink jacket out, you know."
Hyukjae finally let out a small genuine smile and a chuckle which elated Yesung. The atmosphere between them softened a little which made it easier for Hyukjae to open up to the latter.
"I hope you don't take this the wrong way but...are you...here to test me?"
"Test you?" Yesung repeated; completely clueless as to what Hyukjae was referring to. "Test you for what?"
"Well," Hyukjae chewed on his lip, a habit he does whenever he gets nervous or flustered. "Just- if I follow through with the contract...like I don't know. A spy or something like that..."
It took a few seconds for Yesung to process Hyukjae's words in his head before he just burst out laughing. He was laughing so hard that he had to keel over and hold his stomach. Hyukjae just watched, confused and a little offended as to what was so funny about what he said.
"I'm-I'm sorry...but pft-bwahahaha--sorry, sorry," Yesung wiped the small tears at the corner of his eyes and tried to get serious. "I've been doing this for quite somet time but no one's quite put it into words like that."
Hyukjae pouted and crossed his arms. "You still haven't answered me."
Yesung grinned and placed his head in between his hands. "Short answer? Yes."
Hyukjae paled and brought his guard up again. "What do you mean?"
"Technically, I suppose, I do work with, you know," Yesung pointed up and whispered, "the higherups." Hyukjae listened intently although he couldn't help but think just how weird the latter seems to be acting. "You're the first I've handled who was literally given a second chance at life but I usually deal with spirits who negotiate for a longer time to deal with their unfinished business. I basically keep track of the contracts and guide the spirits back to their final destination."
"Would...Would you do the same thing with me?"
Yesung could see the fear in Hyukjae's eyes and so he walked close to him and placed both hands on his shoulders to cheer him on.
"You're different." Yesung pressed on his shoulders, just enough pressure to let Hyukjae know his sincerity. "You can live. You should live. I want you to live."
Hyukjae stared at Yesung's eyes and felt his spirits slowly get lifted. He nodded his head and smiled to lift his own spirits up.
Yesung's right. He can do this. He's going to fight for Donghae and get his life back...only, how is he supposed to do that in 47...no, wait. Hyukjae looked at the clock and frowned seeing it's already 12:18am. 46 days left to make Donghae love the new him. He tried to recall how he and Donghae first started dating but upon recalling their first counter, Hyukjae knew there would be a lot of work and effort in Eunhyuk's part to have Donghae fall in love with him.
Twelve years ago, Hyukjae could not stand Donghae and even avoided him for a good three months before he finally agreed to be friends with the latter and another six months to agree on a date. Hyukjae didn't fall in love with Donghae at first sight but he knew exactly when he did. It was when he had his car accident and had been unbearably cranky at having been put on a cast. Always the busybody, Hyukjae hated not being able to walk or move as much as he wanted, so he took out all his frustrations at a fussy Donghae. He knew he was being unreasonably hard on Donghae, and even feared that the latter might even leave him at a moment's notice, but he didn't. Donghae never even complained, not even when Hyukjae would throw random tantrums or ignore him for no reason. Donghae stayed by his side until he got better.
As soon as the Doctor had taken his cast off and told him he was all better, the first thing Hyukjae did was ask Donghae if he wanted to move in together to which the latter immediately replied by carrying Hyukjae in his arms with joy and spun him around while screaming "YES!" over and over again.
Realizing the big shoes he'd have to fill (again), Hyukjae suddenly didn't feel as confident as he did five seconds ago.

"I'm telling you, Kangin. I saw him!" Leeteuk shrieked while he paced back and forth in Kangin's office.
The latter watched him from his chair while rubbing the bridge of his nose trying to maintain his composure. Leeteuk had freaked out when he went back to the ER to find an empty bed. He had to pull him off the poor nurse, who couldn't stop apologizing for losing a patient, and has been extremely agitated at finding the man again.
"Leeteuk," Kangin called out slowly and worriedly, "I think you should go home. You need to rest."
The latter glared at him in response. "I'm not crazy."
"I didn't say you were crazy. Just tired." Kangin explained trying not to get Leeteuk riled up about something else. "You've been working for 14 hours, you need to sleep."
"No, Kangin, I can't. I need to find Hyukjae-"
Kangin sighed hearing those words come out from Leeteuk again. "Teuk. Stop."
"It was him, okay. I know it was him." Leeteuk insisted his mind worked faster than he could process it. "I don't know how, but...but that was Hyukjae. I'm sure it was Hyukjae."
"Leeteuk, for the last time, that was NOT Hyukjae." Kangin couldn't control his emotions anymore. It's been three years since they buried Hyukjae and he thought Leeteuk has coped pretty well with it. "He's dead. He's been dead for years."
Somehow hearing those words out loud again, even after so many years, still hasn't lessen the pain it caused. Leeteuk's rational mind agrees with Kangin. There was no way that could have been Hyukjae because Hyukjae's gone. He's been gone for a while but his eyes would recognize that face anywhere. He'd recognize Hyukjae anywhere so...how is it possible?
"Kangin...I-..I..." Leeteuk didn't know what to do or what to say. His head hurt. His heart hurt. Everything just hurts.
Kangin seeing the internal turmoil on Leeteuk's face and body, immediately got out of his chair and took him in his arms. He hugged Leeteuk close to and held him until the latter stopped shaking. There has to be a reason for why Leeteuk's acting this way. Stress? Depression? Whatever it is, it's got him worried.
"Kangin. Leeteuk. Are you guys-" Heechul paused midsentence, completely surprised by the scene in front of him. "What's going on?"
Leeteuk took one look at Heechul and the image of Hyukjae on the bed earlier flashed in his mind. He couldn't help but burst out in tears and had to walk out of the room. Heechul stayed in his spot with only his eyes following after him. He looked back at Kangin who simply shook his head at him.
"Don't ask."
"But why-..."
"I don't know either, Heechul." Kangin sighed and started clearing his desk for the day. He needs to make sure he takes Leeteuk home now before he gets any worse. "What are you doing here?"
"Oh. Yeah...um, I was gonna ask if you guys are gonna come to the cemetery with us tonight."
"The cemetery?" Kangin looked back at Heechul curiously. "Why are you going there tonight?"
Heechul rolled his eyes and placed his hands inside his coat pocket. "It's Hyukjae's death anniversary today."
Kangin's eyes widened when it finally sunk in. "Of course! Yes! That makes sense!"
Heechul looked at Kangin like he was crazy and crossed his arms obviously vexed at the little celebration Kangin did.
"What the hell are you so happy about?"
Kangin froze and realized his inappropriate reaction a second too late. "Oh, no. No,no,no. It's not like that." Kangin waved his hands in the air and explained Leeteuk's situati
