three time's the charm (3jin au)

CH. III

It was Saturday afternoon and Ryujin and Chaeryeong had another shift together. They’ve had a couple of the same shifts recently, probably because they were both High School students and had the same availabilities.

It was pretty slow, or at least it should have been slow for Ryujin and Chaeryeong, but they were able to keep each other entertained.

‘No way,’ Chaeryeong said, ‘pigeons are terrifying. Those beady little eyes scream, I’m working for the Government!’

‘They’re birds, ‘ryeongie.’ Ryujin said. ‘They scream and poop and eat your crackers.’

‘That’s what they want you to think.’ Chaeryeong said. Then she shuddered.

Ryujin couldn’t help but smile at Chaeryeong’s scared face. She leaned forward to tuck a strand of hair behind Chaeryeong’s ears. She liked her ears.

Chaeryeong leaned her front against the counter and rested her chin on both of her hands (definitely not because she wanted to hide the blush on her cheeks).

Suddenly, Chaeryeong stood back up. ‘Crap, I knew I was forgetting something.’

‘What’s up?’ Ryujin said.

‘Boss said I have to clean the windows.’

‘You?’ Ryujin sniggered. ‘Can you even reach them?’

‘Why are you laughing?‘ Chaeryeong said while taking out the cleaning supplies from the cupboard. ‘You’re about the same height as me. Aren’t you smaller by like 5cm?’

‘3.’ Ryujin said.

Chaeryeong just chuckled.

‘Are you sure that’s stable?’ Ryujin said, eyeing the stool Chaeryeong was standing on to reach the window.’

‘It’s fine.’ Chaeryeong said. And of course, she had to wobble a tiny bit after saying that.

‘Doesn’t look fine.’ Ryujin said. ‘Here.’

Ryujin placed one hand behind Chaeryeong’s back, the other one holding her waist to steady her. Chaeryeong looked down to see Ryujin already looking up sweetly at her. Chaeryeong brought one hand to her chin.

‘You’re looking at me from the worst angle.’ Chaeryeong said.

‘You always look pretty.’ Ryujin shrugged.

Chaeryeong almost toppled over but Ryujin’s strong hold was able to steady her. For a soccer player, she had pretty strong arms.

After that, Chaeryeong cleaned the window in silence, stepping off the stool from time to time so she could move positions. The whole time, Ryujin stayed holding her and curiously watching her clean the windows. Chaeryeong had to admit she was paying way too much attention to detail just so she could stretch out the time. It wasn’t everyday you’d get Shin Ryujin holding you.

‘Thanks.’ Chaeryeong said as Ryujin helped her back down.

Ryujin just smiled at her.

It was cute, because Chaeryeong wasn’t doing anything. Chaeryeong wasn’t the one who was holding the other on either side of her arms, nor was she the one who took a step closer. Chaeryeong liked it when it was Ryujin initiating the contact. Which was often, Chaeryeong noticed she was a very touchy person.

(Perhaps only to her, but Chaeryeong didn’t know that, nor did the girl in question).

‘By the way, how did dinner with your family go, last week?’

Ryujin’s face dropped a little, her hands leaving Chaeryeong’s arms.

‘Like I expected.’ Ryujin said. ‘I was happy to see Miyeon unnie again but mom made it unbearable.’

Chaeryeong pouted.

‘You know, she made me drop soccer altogether last year.’

‘What?!’

Ryujin nodded.

One day, Ryujin came home with another C grade, and her mom couldn’t take it anymore. They forced her to drop soccer altogether until after she got her grades up.

Miss Im was definitely surprised when Ryujin came up to her dropping out of soccer, especially when Ryujin didn’t give her a reason. Ryujin was the captain of the soccer team, and suddenly, mid season she decided to quit altogether? Not when they were looking good for the finals.

Thankfully, as Miss Im finally got Ryujin to explain why, she had demanded a meeting with Ryujin’s mom, begging her to let her play. She even personally offered to be Ryujin’s personal tutor to get her grades up to at least a B.

Safe to say, Ryujin’s grades have risen significantly since then. Still wasn’t A material like her mother wanted, but it was good enough with B pluses and the occasional A minuses. Though history seemed to stay at C.

Ryujin owed a lot to Miss Im.

‘Nayeon unnie is the best.’ Chaeryeong said.

‘You call her by first name?’ Ryujin chuckled.

Chaeryeong shrugged. ‘She’s not my teacher anymore, and she’s pretty young, you know? Like early twenties.’

‘If she wasn’t dating Miss Yoo I would totally date her.’

‘Right.’ Chaeryeong rolled her eyes. ‘Because that’s the only reason to stop you from dating her… your teacher.’

‘Tutor to lovers au.’ Ryujin made a ‘rock on!’ symbol with her hands and shook them, a smirk on her face.

‘I can’t stand you.’ Chaeryeong said.

‘You love me.’ Ryujin made a kissy face.

Chaeryeong pushed Ryujin away, they were in close proximity the entire time they were talking, and made her way back to the counter.

‘Get back to work,’ Chaeryeong said, a small smile on her face.

Ryujin cleaned up the cleaning materials from before.

‘By the way,’ Chaeryeong said, ‘I sort of understand your situation. Being perfect Miyeon’s little sister sounds similar to being perfect Lee Chaeyeon’s little sister whose only talent is kicking a ball.’

Ryujin looked up to Chaeryeong who looked suddenly looked sad all of a sudden.

‘But this ain’t about me, what I’m trying to say is that if you ever need to talk, I’m here.’

Ryujin nodded. ‘Same goes for you.’

She made her way back to Chaeryeong’s side.

‘And you know your only talent isn’t just kicking a ball, what the hell are you talking about?’ Ryujin said.

‘What else can I do then?’

Ryujin looked dead serious. ‘You brighten up my world.’

Chaeryeong looked at her incredulously. Then she burst out laughing.

‘Greasy.’ Chaeryeong punched her playfully on the shoulder, earning a soft close lipped smile from Ryujin.

‘Come here.’ Ryujin wrapped her arms around Chaeryeong’s waist and pulled her closer, puckering her lips. ‘You love it.’

Chaeryeong instinctively put her arms on her chest to push her away, but then stopped resisting for a moment.

She leaned her face closer towards Ryujin. If she leaned in just a fraction closer her lips would be on hers.

‘Well? Kiss me, you coward.’

Ryujin stopped puckering her lips and studied Chaeryeong’s face. The other girl had the hint of a playful sparkle in her eyes, it was obvious she was trying to keep a straight face.

‘I’m not the coward. If I did try to kiss you, you’d pull away, bet.’

‘Try me.’ Chaeryeong said.

Ryujin kept staring at Chaeryeong, none of them saying a word. The convenience store was suddenly awfully quiet.

Ryujin could sense that Chaeryeong wasn’t joking, and that she was kind of anticipating it. What scared Ryujin the most was that a part inside of her wanted it as well.

Ryujin softly pushed Chaeryeong away.

‘I don’t want to put you through that trauma.’ Ryujin laughed. ‘I’m not one to kiss my coworkers, either. I’ll be back I gotta grab my phone from my bag.’

Chaeryeong watched her go.

‘But you’re not just my coworker.’ Chaeryeong mumbled under her breath.

………………

Yujin took a gulp of her water and dried her forehead with a towel.

It was 7 in the morning and Yujin had been there since 6:30am, practicing her volleyball. Her morning practices mostly consisted of conditioning like stretches and running drills. Sometimes she’d practice her serves. On rare occasions, she’d play basketball or perhaps dance a little. But that was very rare, it took a lot for her to become unfocused from what she liked to do.

Yujin tended to be like that. Once she put her mind to it, she’d be able to push through with it. She wasn’t one to do things based on feelings, very different to Ryujin and to an extent, Hyunjin.

She loved practicing early in the morning because the gym was always so still and calm. It was the only time where she could get some peace and quiet.

She took a deep breath and savoured the stillness of the gym.

Unfortunately, it didn’t last that long.

The door to the gym opened, echoing around the room.

‘Oh.’

Yujin was sort of disappointed that someone disturbed the stillness of the gym, but she wasn’t too upset by who it was.

‘What do you mean, oh?’ Yujin said to the newcomer. ‘Thought you’d be happy to see me, Jang Wonyoung.’

‘What are you doing here so early?’ Wonyoung crossed her arms.

‘Practicing.’ Yujin said. ‘Why are you here so early?’

Wonyoung dumped her bag onto the bench. ‘Also practicing. All the way over here, so you won’t bug me.’

‘I can still bug you from here, you know?’

‘Sorry, can’t hear you. I got AirPods on.’

Yujin just sniggered.

Wonyoung has been stretching for a little bit while Yujin did some pushups. There was really no need to do it, she may or may not have just wanted to show off to Wonyoung.

Yujin finished her reps and took another sip of water, rolling her head and shoulders a little bit. She glanced towards Wonyoung who seemed to be practicing the dance aspect for their cheerleading routine.

Yujin couldn’t help but watch her practice. Wonyoung was cute when she was mad, but she was also really cute when she was focussed on something. She liked seeing her furrowed eyebrows, and the way would pout a little bit everytime she wouldn’t get a move right. Her groans of frustration were also incredibly adorable to Yujin.

Wonyoung spun around.

‘Can you not?’

Yujin put her hands up in defense. ‘Can I not, what?’

‘Watch me like that! It’s creepy.’ Wonyoung said. ‘Creep.’

‘Sorry,’ Yujin said, ‘I just think you’ve done that section enough, you’ve got it down perfectly, no need to overdo it.’

‘It’s for muscle memory, Yujin.’ Wonyoung said. ‘Practicing something so much so that your body instantly remembers it. Not that you would know.’

Yujin chuckled. ‘Trust me. I know all about it. Why do you think I’m here?’

‘To annoy me and stalk me.’

‘Um, I was here first, actually. And I was just trying to help you.’

‘I don’t need your help. What do you know about this anyway?’

Yujin smirked.

Then she did something Wonyoung did not expect in a million years.

‘Oh, yeah?’ Yujin said.

She rolled her head a bit to warm up, steadying her body. Then she did the section of the dance routine that Wonyoung had been practicing. Perfectly.

Wonyoung’s mouth fell open.

‘You practiced it so much that even I got it.’

Wonyoung scratched her head. There was no way Yujin was that talented. And if she was, that just annoyed Wonyoung even more.

‘Wanna know my secret?’ Yujin said, crossing the court coolly with one hand in her pocket.

Once she was in front of Wonyoung she leaned her head closer.

‘I choreographed it.’ Yujin smiled.

Wonyoung only stared at her, not believing that she, Ahn Yujin, would choreograph the dance routine for the cheerleaders. But then again, it was either that or Yujin actually was really good at picking up the dance routine, which meant Yujin would have been right.

‘Sure you did.’ Wonyoung said. ‘And I’m the daughter of the president.’

‘It’s true.’ Yujin said. ‘You don’t have to believe me but sometimes Doyeon unnie asks me for help choreographing the dance sections for some of the routines. You should be thanking me, you should have seen the monstrosity she was going to get you guys to do, instead.’

‘If what you’re saying is true, how come Doyeon unnie didn’t say anything, then?’ Wonyoung challenged, a hand on her hips.

‘I asked her not to.’ Yujin shrugged. ‘I only choreograph some counts, not all of them. But feel free to ask her.’

‘Whatever.’ Wonyoung said. Her eyes trailed to Yujin’s feet, not being able to stand looking at her face anymore.

Wonyoung pointed at Yujin’s feet.

‘Your shoes are untied.’

‘I know.’

‘Well, tie them up.’

‘No.’

Wonyoung just looked at Yujin incredulously.

‘Does it bother you?’ Yujin shook her foot in front of her so the laces would move around.

‘I could care less about you.’

‘Then what you so mad for?’

Wonyoung grabbed her head in frustration.

‘God! You’re so annoying! Just leave me alone if all you want to do is annoy me. It’s like you make it your job just to infuriate me. Why can’t we just have a normal conversation?’

Yujin seemed unphased by Wonyoung’s outburst which annoyed the cheerleader even more. She was ready to slap a frown onto Yujin’s face.

‘You’re the one that keeps snapping at me.’

‘I wouldn’t have to snap at you if you just left me alone! God, you know what? Stuff this.’

Wonyoung bent down in front of Yujin. Yujin could only look down in confusion at the girl. Then she felt Wonyoung’s hands on her shoe, more specifically her shoelaces.

Wonyoung was tying up Yujin’s shoelace.

When Wonyoung finished, she looked up at Yujin and Yujin swore, she’d never seen anyone as pretty as Jang Wonyoung before. She’s never felt this way before, she’s never been rendered speechless by something as simple as Wonyoung tying up her shoelace.

‘Problem solved.’ Wonyoung said. Then she stood up so she was back to Yujin’s height. ‘Now, just leave me alone.’

Yujin didn’t say anything, still in a daze. It was only after a few moments when Yujin realised Wonyoung had picked up her bag and was leaving the gym.

‘Wait!’ Yujin called after her.

Wonyoung stopped in her tracks.

‘I’m sorry.’

Wonyoung’s hand played with the strap of her sports bag.

‘You were right, I like annoying you.’ Yujin said, pursing her lips together to bring out her dimples. Hyunjin and Ryujin had told her once that if someone was ever mad at her or she was confessing that she did something wrong, then she should bring out her dimples to soften the blow. Now, it was just a habit that she couldn’t seem to get rid of.

Wonyoung turned around in a flash, pointing a finger accusingly at Yujin. ‘Aha! I knew it! I was right!’

Yujin just shrugged.

‘May I ask, why?’ Wonyoung said.

Yujin froze, her smile faltering from her face.

Wonyoung raised an eyebrow. She’s never seen Yujin look nervous over anything. And she’s seen Yujin play a lot of tense and important games. Because she was a cheerleader for her games, of course. Not that she would watch Yujin voluntarily.

‘Yujin?’

A smile came back onto Yujin’s face, but it was one Wonyoung had never seen before. It was a shy smile. It was the first smile that Wonyoung felt was genuine from Yujin. Not her charming smile or cheeky smile that would melt other people, but a unique smile that actually reflected how Yujin felt inside.

It was kind of a sweet smile, but Wonyoung would never be caught dead admitting that to anyone.

‘No reason.’ Yujin said.

I just think you’re cute when you’re mad.

…………………………..

‘Wear the plaid.’

‘Hell, no. I vote for e-girl.’

‘No, wear the plaid and trench coat type thing over it.’

‘E-girl!’

Ryujin pinched the bridge of her nose. She could trust Hyunjin and Yujin when it came to many things, but fashion advice was not one of them. Not when the two of them had such deferring tastes.

Yujin’s style was a little bit younger and louder, when she wasn’t wearing all black or all white hype brands, she’d be wearing brighter colors. Colors that would stick out in a crowd like yellow or hot pink.

Hyunjin on the other hand… well she just wore plaid.

‘I’m not dressing up like an E-girl, Yujin.’

‘Aw.’

‘And I’m not dressing up, well, like you, Hyunjin. Heejin's going on a date with me, not you.’

‘Boo.’

Ryujin took a look at her closet. She reached for a pair of square jeans, a white t-shirt and a grey cropped puffy jacket.

She showed them to Hyunjin and Yujin who shrugged.

‘Go for it, I guess?’ Yujin laughed.

‘Sure.’ Hyunjin said uninterestedly.

Ryujin rolled her eyes. ‘You guys really don’t care, don’t you? You just wanted me to choose your outfit.’

Yujin shook her head. ‘No, who said that?’

Which was funny because she said that at the same time as Hyunjin deadpanned, ‘yup.’

Yujin sighed.

‘Okay, fine. Yes.’ Yujin said.

Ryujin found one of her soft toy balls on her desk and threw it at Hyunjin. It was a thing, if she was annoyed at both of them Hyunjin always got the punishments. An inside joke they made when Hyunjin once said that Yujin’s success was hers since she was the oldest. Which Ryujin and Yujin took to mean that Yujin’s punishments were also hers. Anything that gave Ryujin an excuse to beat her .

‘Where are you meeting Heejin sunbaenim?’

‘At the movies.’ Ryujin said. She checked her watch, ‘I should probably leave soon, huh?’

‘Maybe if you had a license, you could spare some time.’

‘Shut up, Hyunjin. You don’t have your license either.’

Hyunjin opened . Then she closed it again. ‘Yeah, I walked into that one.’

‘Well, I have to go now.’ Yujin said. ‘My uncle needs me at home. His favorite Spanish soap opera is having its season finale and I promised I’d watch it with him.’

‘You guys don’t even speak Spanish. Or even are Spanish.’

‘But we can read?’

‘Barely.’ Hyunjin whispered under her breath which earned a small glare from Yujin.

‘Bye, Yujin.’ Ryujin fist bumped the youngest Jin.

‘Have fun on your date!’

………………..

‘Well, I’m gonna go this way.’ Hyunjin said to Ryujin, holding onto the strap of her guitar case on her back.

‘You’re not gonna drop me off at my date, mom?’ Ryujin pouted overdramatically.

Hyunjin shivered. ‘Stop calling me that.’

‘Would you prefer,’ Ryujin wiggled her eyebrows, ‘mommy? Or daddy?’

‘No! What the hell? Just go before I end up beating your .’

Ryujin rolled her eyes and kept walking the other way.

‘For your information, I’d beat you up first.’ Ryujin called back to Hyunjin.

‘In your dreams, twig!’

Ryujin flipped the bird at Hyunjin without turning to look at her.

‘Just cause she’s thick.’ Ryujin mumbled to herself.

Ryujin had been walking for a few minutes now when her phone started to buzz from her boss. Ryujin stared at it for a few seconds, wondering what he could possibly want.

‘Hi, Boss.’ Ryujin answered the phone.

‘Ryujin. I know this is very late notice and I’m sorry, but would you mind coming to your shift today a little earlier? Maybe around 4pm?’

Ryujin’s eyes widened. She had a shift today? She put her boss on speaker, while searching for her schedule again on her phone.

‘Um, I should be able to but is it okay if I get back to you on that? I just have to arrange something.’ Ryujin said, looking at the time. It was 2 in the afternoon, and the movie started in half an hour.

‘Okay. Thanks, Ryujin.’

‘No problem, boss.’

Ryujin wasn’t too fussed. She knew she could just call Chaeryeong to cover for her. Besides, Chaeryeong sort of owed her because Ryujin’s covered for her shift before.

Ryujin dialed Chaeryeong’s number.

‘Hello?’

‘Hey! Chae. How much do you love me?’

There was a short silence on the other end of the line.

‘This is Chaeyeon. Chaeryeong can’t come to the phone right now, actually.’

‘Oh, is she okay?’ Ryujin said.

Chaeyeon didn’t say anything for awhile, Ryujin only hearing her breathing on the other side of the line. Her breaths sounded a little shaky and Ryujin was starting to get worried.

‘Ryujin, Chaeryeong is missing.’

Ryujin froze. Her feet felt glued to the ground, her body heavy and all she could feel was the hot surface of her phone on her ear and cheek.

Ryujin didn’t know what to think, she wasn’t even sure if she heard Chaeyeon right.

‘I tried to wake her up this morning for breakfast but she said she felt sick so I left her alone and I went to check up on her an hour ago and when I opened the door, she was gone. She even left her phone on the bed. I don’t know how I didn’t notice her leave and I don’t know what to do because I have still have to take care of Chaemin and I don’t know what to tell mom and dad and—‘

‘Sunbaenim. I’ll help you find her.’ Ryujin said. ‘Just stay there with Chaemin just in case she comes back.’

‘Thank you, Ryujin.’ Chaeyeon said. Ryujin could tell she was trying to hold back her tears.

‘Has she been acting weird or did something happen to her that you know of?’

‘Ryujin.’ Chaeyeon said.

As someone who was always joking around and creating the mood, Chaeyeon sounded awfully serious and awfully scared right now. Ryujin’s never heard her like that before. Usually Chaeyeon was a strong older sister who had her whole life organised and perfect. She was the person people could lean on when they were feeling weak.

But right now, Chaeyeon sounded so fragile.

And it was when she uttered the next words that Ryujin understood why.

‘Chaeryeong broke her leg.’

…………………

‘Heejin.’

‘Hey, Ryujin! What’s up?’

Ryujin paused on the other end of the line, she could hear the chatter of the busy movie theatre.

‘Look, Heejin, I’m really sorry but something came up. One of my really good friends is going through some problems right now and I really need to be there for her.’

‘Oh.’

‘I really am sorry, Heejin.’ Ryujin said. ‘I’ll text you later to reschedule our date.’

‘Okay, no problem.’

……………….

Meanwhile, Yujin was browsing through the convenience store near her house for some jjapaghetti. It was her uncle’s favorite and he was craving it. Sadly, Yujin, Ryujin and Hyunjin had finished off their stash a few days ago. So, now here was Yujin, doing some last minute shopping before they began their watching of the show.

Yujin turned down the aisle and found exactly what she was looking for.

‘Aha.’ Yujin said proudly to herself and reached for the jjapaghetti.

However, it seemed another hand was reaching for it at the same time.

‘Oh sorry!’ Both Yujin and the other person said at the same time. ‘You can have it!’

Yujin turned to the other person in surprise, shocked at how in sync they were. However, she was more surprised when she saw who the person actually was.

‘Wonyoung?’

Yujin had to look at her for a few seconds before she was able to recognise her. Wonyoung had no make up on, she was completely barefaced and she had a mask covering and up to her nose. Her hair was in a really messy bun and it seemed like she was wearing her pajamas. And also expensive looking gucci slides, of course. Can’t be Wonyoung without anything designer looking.

‘Oh, God.’ Wonyoung said.

‘You really hate me that much, don’t you?’ Yujin shook her head. ‘Your whole demeanor changed as soon as you saw my face.’

‘I’m not in a mood to start an argument, Yujin. I’m kind of in a rush.’ Wonyoung went to grab the jjapaghetti.

‘Same here,’ Yujin said, ‘I mean about being in a rush, thing. But as you know, I very much enjoy arguing with you.’

‘That’s great.’ Wonyoung said, her eyes looking around the room quickly, which didn’t go unnoticed by Yujin.

‘You okay? You seem kind of on edge.’

Wonyoung sighed exasperatedly.

‘I’m fine. Here, have your damn jjapaghetti, I’m leaving.’

Wonyoung shoved the packet into Yujin’s hand and hastily started to head towards the exit, leaving a shocked Yujin standing dumbfoundedly with the jjapaghetti in her hand.

Yujin cocked her head to side. She had no clue what the hell that was all about.

‘Wonyoung!’ Yujin called after her, putting the jjapaghetti back onto the shelf. Wonyoung probably wouldn’t have heard her, she was already halfway out the door.

Yujin jogged to catch up with her. She had no clue why she was doing that. Maybe Wonyoung just looked cute in her casual wear. And it was the first time Yujin had seen barefaced Wonyoung and it was very endearing to her.

When Yujin made it out the door of the convenience store, she saw Wonyoung crossing the road.

‘Wonyo--’ Yujin began to say but she cut herself off when she saw the girl look nervously around her.

Then a dark and tinted black car pulled up next to Wonyoung and the cheerleader hastily got in.

Yujin shut .

‘What the hell was that?’

………………….

Hyunjin tossed a scrunched up piece of paper in her hand, music blasting through her air pods.

After separating from Ryujin before her date, Hyunjin had planned to just chill in the park by herself and play some guitar.

She was listening to pop love songs, figuring out which ones she could make arrangements for because one: she needed new material to impress the girls with and two: well, she just enjoyed it. It was one of her favourite past times. Figuring out arrangements were fun because it helped her to decipher the theory behind a lot of songs. She was quite fascinated with music theory and would sometimes read books or watch videos that broke down certain musical skills and theories.

Hyunjin could play piano and could sort of sing too, but her favourite instrument was obviously the guitar. It was just so easy to bring around and she especially loved the sound of the strings being plucked. If you asked her, she would say the guitar was probably her first love.

She was currently arranging some more Ed Sheeran, because all the girlies seemed to love his ballads. And he had a lot of them.

‘Hyunjin?’

Hyunjin stopped plucking Thinking Out Loud and looked up to see the voice. She was shocked when she saw who it was.

‘Heejin?’ Hyunjin said.
