PROLOGUE

It was afternoon in the city of Seoul, a week before the school year started for Enozi High private school. Enozi High was a private school for some of the Highest achieving High School girls in Seoul. If you went to that school, chances were you were highly talented at whatever it is that you’re into.

Everyone was gathered at a Senior’s house as a last hurrah before they were thrown into the pits of fiery hell, High School. For most of the people at the party, it was going to be their last year of High School: Senior Year. For others, They sadly had a couple more years to go, but Junior Year still wasn’t so bad.

There was a lot going on in the Senior’s house. Some people were inside, killing it or killing ears at karaoke. Some people were sitting on the couch watching a movie or just sitting around a table and having a laugh. Outside of the house, there were people sunbathing and snacking at the snack table.

But the most exciting part of the house was over by the basketball court where some of the girls were having a playful scrimmage.

Everyone there was good, but all eyes were on two of the girls in particular.

‘Are these two basketball players? They’re really good.’ Said one girl on the sidelines. She was new to the school and was wondering why everyone including her friends were watching with bated breath (and red cheeks).

‘The first lesson you’ll have to learn is that our school is home to actual goddesses.’ One girl sighed dreamily at the two playing basketball.

‘Goddesses in the form of sports captains.’

The new girl nodded.

‘That one holding the basketball is Shin Ryujin.’ One girl pointed towards a girl with dark hair and a bob cut. She looked so serious, eyeing down the other player, as if she was trying to read what she was going to do next. The new girl had to admit she looked pretty attractive when she looked focused like that. ‘She’s actually a soccer player. Total heartbreaker. Probably the most mysterious one and no one has actually seen her smile before.’

‘I like her the best! Her wink? She’s so cool.’

‘Yes! Her winks drive me crazy.’

‘No, way, guys. Kim Hyunjin is definitely better.’

The new girl looked at the girl Ryujin was up against on the basketball court.

‘Is that one Kim Hyunjin?’

The others girls all sighed dreamily.

‘Yes. She’s the captain of the softball team and if you think Ryujin’s winks can kill you, just wait till you have a conversation with Hyunjin. She’s so charming.’

Contrary to Ryujin’s laser focused gaze, Hyunjin seemed much more relaxed, a smirk evident on her face and an eyebrow raised playfully.

The softballer was definitely more chill than the soccer player but only when it came to sports. In real life, both of them were equally as playful and mischievous.

Another girl nudged the new girl playfully. ‘Can you tell Kim Hyunjin’s her favourite Jin?’

‘I see.’

Ryujin kept her cool gaze as the soccer player was smirking at her.

‘Smile, Ryujinnie. You know your smile makes the girls go crazy.’ The softballer teased the soccer player. The latter was currently calculating how to get around the softball player.

‘I think that’s you, Hyunjinnie. The girls over there seem to be gushing over you.’ Ryujin said.

They took a quick glance at the group of girls on the side, who were indeed watching the two with bated breaths and red cheeks.

It was no secret to them and the rest of the school that they had all the girls wrapped around their fingers. And because they were so competitive, sometimes they would make it a competition to see who can impress the most girls, and their hearts. Being the captains of two of the most successful sports teams in their school, it was only fitting that way. Though the two never touched any of the girls. They just liked making them flustered. It was like the captains were members of an idol group. The whole school being their fans.

‘Heads up.’ Ryujin said. Then she turned to girls on the side and shot them a cheeky wink.

Ryujin faked that she was going to the right and as soon as Hyunjin went to go along with her, Ryujin spun around, slightly pushing Hyunjin back with her so that she can get past her. It was an easy swoosh into the bucket.

The crowd cheered.

‘Go, Ryujin!’ They heard some of the girls say.

The giddy whispers of ‘Ryujin is so cool’ didn’t go unmissed by the two captains.

Hyunjin shook her head, reaching out her hand so Ryujin can grab it. She pulled her into a bro hug and pat Ryujin on the back.

‘You may have won that round, Shin Ryujin. But I got something you don’t have.’

‘Not the guitar.’ Ryujin groaned.

Hyunjin smirked.

‘Hey, are you guys using that?’

The girls sitting near the guitar were all shocked to see Hyunjin approaching them and they instantly halted all of their conversation to smile shyly at the girl.

‘No, Hyunjin! You can use it.’ One of the girls said.

‘Can you play something for us?’ Another one said as Hyunjin sat against the leg of a chair and propped her foot up on the table.

She twiddled a few of the strings, making sure the guitar was in tune.

Hyunjin shot them a smile. ‘Well, I can’t say no to you guys.’

Ryujin rolled her eyes. She was sitting behind the girls and sipping her water. She never liked to admit it but it was fun watching Hyunjin play guitar. The girl was really good.

Hyunjin started to play a rendition of Can’t Help Falling in Love on the guitar, smirking to herself when she could practically see the girls melting. That song was a classic and worked like a charm, especially whenever Hyunjin would look up every now and again and flash her cute smile towards the audience watching. Just not towards Ryujin. They were homo-bros but definitely not to each other.

When Hyunjin finished playing some more girls had gathered around to watch her and once she had strummed the last note they all started clapping.

‘You’re so good, Hyunjin.’

‘I’ve never seen anyone play guitar like you.’

‘You’re so cool.’

‘Can you play us another song?’

Before Hyunjin could respond, Ryujin suddenly interrupted.

‘Um, Hyunjin.’ Ryujin said, staring at a spot in the distance. She pointed towards something behind Hyunjin.

Hyunjin followed her gaze.

‘Oh, God.’ Hyunjin pinched the bridge of her nose in frustration. She stood up and said to the girls, ‘one moment, please. I’ll be back.’

Hyunjin and Ryujin made their way closer to the scene, both of them shaking their heads in disappointment.

There was a girl climbing a tree. But not just any girl.

‘Ahn Yujin! What the hell are you doing?’

Ahn Yujin was the hardworking captain of the school’s volleyball team and the tallest out of the three Jins. And by tall, as in she was a good head taller than them both. Which was quite funny seeing how she was younger than the other two captains. Yujin was a junior while Hyunjin and Ryujin were both seniors.

‘Oh, hey unnies!’ Yujin said. ‘These girls got their ball stuck on the roof, I’m just getting it for them.’

‘And how are you planning to do that?’ Ryujin said.

Yujin pointed to the tree she was currently climbing. ‘Climb this tree, duh?’

It would have been a good idea. If the tree wasn’t a good foot away from the house. Both Hyunjin and Ryujin knew that Yujin was planning to jump from the tree and onto the roof. They trusted her athletic ability, she would be able to land it, it was just the getting down part that she didn’t think about.

‘Yujin, I swear. Get down from the tree and use a ladder.’ Hyunjin pointed to the ladder that was sticking out of the shed.

‘I thought of that.’ Yujin said, now clinging onto a branch with one hand and hanging slightly. ‘But it was too heavy to carry by myself.’

‘Well, we’re here, now.’ Ryujin said. ‘We’ll help you carry it. Just get down.’

Yujin smiled and jumped off the tree.

The three of them lifted the ladder and brought it to the side of the house. Yujin had to hold the ladder a little lower just so that it would be the right height for Hyunjin and Ryujin.

With Hyunjin and Ryujin holding the bottom of the ladder steady, Yujin climbed up and returned the ball.

‘Here you go. Let me know if you need anything else.’ Yujin said to the girls waiting.

Then she flashed them a smile.

If Hyunjin and Ryujin had smiles that drove the girls crazy (though the latter rarely did it), Yujin’s smile was deadly and would make anyone fall for her.

It was so dazzling and welcoming and when her eyes turned into crescents, it was game over for whoever was on the receiving end of that smile. And you couldn’t forget the dimples. Those damn dimples. Every girl in school fawned over Ahn Yujin’s dimples. Even teachers couldn’t help but have a soft spot for the girl. Even when her grades weren’t that great, they could never bring themselves to be mad at her.

People would sometimes argue over who was better, Hyunjin or Ryujin. But one thing was for sure, there was nobody that didn’t have a soft spot for Ahn Yujin, or at least disliked her. Where Hyunjin and Ryujin were the High School heartthrobs because of their ability to charm their way into people’s hearts, Yujin was a High School heartthrob because of her natural charm. She didn’t even have to try.

So of course, the girls were speechless at her smile, turning into mush. And Hyunjin and Ryujin just watched with a shake of their head.

‘We do the absolute most to get these girls melting and then Miss Dimples over here only has to smile and everyone’s kneeling at her feet.’ Ryujin said.

‘Unbelievable.’ Hyunjin said. She patted Yujin on the back. ‘Come on, Princess Jasmine, I promised those girls over there a song. Can you sing Tangled for them?’

Yujin nodded. ‘Sure, okay.’ Then she looked at the girls. ‘I’ll see you guys around, unless you want to come watch us sing.’

‘Of course we want to see you sing! You were so good in the musical last year.’ one of the girls said, the others smiling and nodding in agreement.

Yujin was very multitalented. Not only was she the best volleyball player in Enozi High Private School, but she was also one of the best singers, dancers and actors. She was so good, that she scored the lead in the school musical the year before. Safe to say that all the girls were crushing on Princess Jasmine, rather than Aladdin. She was also the drummer of the school jazz band once, but she had to drop it due to her busy schedule. She then played the trumpet in marching band, but she also dropped it because it would clash with game times. The only thing she couldn’t do was figure out the correct conjugations for english class but that was okay, all she had to do was move her hands like an American and people would be fooled enough.

‘We’re back.’ Hyunjin said. ‘And I brought a guest.’

And as Hyunjin and Yujin played and sang their way into people’s hearts, Ryujin couldn’t help but video her best friends with a soft smile on her face, the rare kind of smile that happened only once in a blue moon. There was a lot that the people of Enozi High Private School and beyond didn’t know about these three, but one thing was for sure, the three of them loved each other as if they were real sisters.

As long as the three of them knew they had each other’s backs, they felt like they could do anything.
