Chicken Dinner
If You Were Gay
Chorong's lips were pressed in a thin line to be interrupted. The story wasn't over yet! Ah, curse Hayoung's short attention span.
The girl turned back from her comrade messenger to face the older woman. "Sorry unnie, I gotta go. I'm in charge of games again. But don't go anywhere! I'll be right back to hear the rest of the story!" she chirped.
Yeah! Gamemaster Oh Hayoung reporting for duty! Are you ready to enter the HABBANGGROUNDS?
Chorong watched as Hayoung enthusiastically hopped up from the picnic rug on long legs and galloped over to the playing field, where a few neighbours were doing stretches and lunges in wait. The bookstore owner pouted slightly to be left on pause and looked over to the woman by her side, only to stare a little longer than necessary. God, she had a side profile to die for.
Bomi was unconsciously puckering her lips too, in thought. She was fixated on where Hayoung had escaped to, ears perking up at the mention of games. What are they playing? Will there be sports? Bomi was tempted to join.
Seeing that the party venue was a park, a perfect wide-open space for athletic activities under the sun, the sporty side of Bomi was suddenly itching to play.
Chorong laughed inside at Bomi's obvious interest. Knowing Hayoung, the games won't be anything athletic that would require physical body strength and stamina.
Indeed she was right, as the group from afar performed some amazing stretches only for them to sit down, and they started playing mafia in a circle.
Bomi pouted in disappointment, sorely hoping she could've gotten her BBOMLYMPIC party dream. Yeah, she was nostalgic for her summer sports days back in high school.
But she could still handle mafia.
She was thinking about wanting to join when Chorong pulled her attention back to where she currently was; shaded under the big tree, sitting together on this picnic blanket... Hey, wait a minute, didn't she own a dress with this exact pattern-
"Are you gonna tell me what you're doing here now?" Chorong asked with an eyebrow quirked, breaking her train of thought.
"Oh, right," Bomi smiled sheepishly. "I should probably tell you how I got here..."
Chorong could see that she wanted to play with the others, but she had been wanting to ask this since Bomi dropped in unexpectedly. They were quickly crowded around like celebrities and Hayoung had to haul the two of them away, pressing them for the "tea" to be "spilled" and they couldn't get any time privately to each other. Until now.
"We'll join the next game, okay?"
"Okay!" Bomi brightened like a kid who got their candy. She was so easy to please. It made Chorong giggle.
Bomi cleared , ready to begin. "You know, you actually ended your story at a good spot. It was right after that time..."
At the sound of knocking, Bomi looked up from her workspace to see a familiar face waving at her through the glass window in the door.
"Eunji-ya!" she greeted in pleasant surprise, welcoming the short-haired woman into the studio. "RONG TIME NO SEE! What are you doing here?"
"Just thought I'd stop by to see you work," Eunji grinned with a playful nudge. "How's it coming along?"
"Mm, pretty good," Bomi smiled, massaging her neck self-consciously. "Kim Taewoo-nim seems happy with the choices on the album so far. We just have to re-record some of the background vocals on the title song because I haven't been able to tweak the effect I quite want it to have."
Eunji lightly shook her head in wonder. "Look at you being all professional. I'm so proud of you, Bbom!"
Bomi blushed despite herself, not used to hearing such praise for her work. "Thank you sunbaenim~"
Eunji snickered. "Yah, must you get all weird when I say something good about you? You're doing great, Bomi. I mean it as a friend more than a senior. So stop blushing or you're gonna make me blush."
"Hey, just because we're friends doesn't change the fact that your music and genius is awesome beyond compare," Bomi chuckled with a fist bump to the heart, causing Eunji to squirm like a chicken from the fluff compliment. Falling back into her desk chair, Bomi asked, "So what's the real reason you're on this side of town? Is it music too? Oh, don't tell me. Are you going to that party with all the celebrities.. The YEOREUM.I AFTER PARTY?"
"Neither!" Eunji's smile broadened, bringing her arms out in an adorable cheer. "I got a date!"
"You got a date??" Bomi almost jolted off her chair with a smile as big as her friend's.
"Well, technically I got an interview to a date."
"..What? Like a job interview?" Bomi snorted, only to find that Eunji wasn't joking. "Wait, really??"
"Well yeah," Eunji shrugged. "There was an ad in the women's paper looking for a girlfriend, and let me tell you, the girl is hot. I decided to try my luck and got scheduled a time to meet her friend."
"Who's the girl?"
Eunji fished out the newspaper clipping from her bag and handed it to Bomi. It didn't take long for Bomi's eyes to widen.
"Wow," she muttered, staring at the photo.
"I know right? It'll be a miracle if I get picked. I betcha all the lesbians are swarming over this as we speak, like vampires with fresh blood. I never woulda thought-"
"...wow, wow, WOW," Bomi increased in volume, standing up straight.
Her friend looked at her strangely. "What's with you?"
"No, not that kind of wow! Eunji, I- I know her!" Bomi cried out, gripping the paper in her hands. She pointed to the photo repeatedly. "Park Chorong, she's the girl I was telling you about."
Eunji's mouth fell open. Not a moment later, she was throwing her hands in the air. "Of course! Oh, why didn't I see it?? You have a thing with a hot girl in denial and right then there's a weird ad in the paper."
She sighed dramatically, pretend sobbing with her eyes glistening. "I knew it was too good be true."
"Stop it with those weird noises," Bomi slapped her on the back before suddenly dropping to her knees in front of a bewildered Eunji.
"Eunji-ya, Jeong Eunji, please let me have this. I know her, I met her! And we clicked like this," Bomi pleaded, showing her fingers crossed. She was throwing her whole being into the bro code.
"Yah! What are you kneeling down for? I'm not going!"
"You're...not?"
"I'm not!" Eunji gasped, holding her heart like she'd just been shot. "Yoon Bomi I'm offended! What do you take me for?? I'm not stealing anyone's girl, and especially not yours. This is the one you've been smitten over, for Christ's sake!"
Bomi blushed deeply. Did she really come off that way in the phone call?
Eunji placed her hands on the woman's shoulders, calming down. The universe twinkled from her eye smile.
"Don't you see, Yoon Bomi? It's destiny! For you! It's a sign! So I'm telling you to go for it. You had her first, so you better go slay that interview."
Bomi finally came back to herself, nodding firmly as Eunji nodded with her, giving her the plan.
"...And remember, her friend's name is Oh Hayoung. She just told me to turn up to this address on Saturday."
"Saturday.. Wait... That's tomorrow?? ! My schedule- Ahh, I'll see what I can do," Bomi mumbled, more to herself than to Eunji.
"And that's how it happened," Bomi explained.
Well, actually she omitted the part where she said she knew Chorong, and made the story out to be some weird catfight with her and Eunji fighting for the date. Sorry Eunji-ya, but Hayoung can't know that I already know my date...
Hayoung had her elbow propped up on the table, resting her chin on her hand. "Ohh, so that's why number 18 never showed up today," she responded thoughtfully.
Bomi almost spat out her drink. Eighteen?? That's like, about the size of her high school class!
To have that many lesbians come to one place is already a pretty big feat. It seems Eunji was right about the vampires, or did she say it was fresh blood..?
Chorong was popular. Damn, now that all the gays had caught onto this, Bomi had some competition.
But Bomi couldn't reveal her hidden card to Chorong's friend, who obviously didn't know who she was. It seemed Chorong didn't tell her roommate about their last encounters. Bomi wanted to play it fair and give a good impression. Who knows, maybe Hayoung will find her to be a perfect match in the same way she did.
It seemed to be going well. She managed to arrive just i
