chapter eight
Unrequited“And there’s your x, see? Easy peasy.” Minjoo finished off half her tutoring session with a wide grin plastered on her face. She has been teaching the black haired guy their past lectures for almost one and a half hour now.
“I didn’t know math could be that quick and easy, you’re way better than Mr. Jung. We should do this every after class.” Junkyu utters, with a goal in mind but of course he made it seem like it’s pure joke.
“And let you slack off during math class? No freaking way Kim Junkyu.” The two of them chuckles with each other’s antics before starting off with another topic.
“Let's take a break from all these lectures, why don’t we talk about each other now? We haven’t done that getting to know phase yet so I was thinking maybe now is a good time for that.” The raven guy said to which the beauty agrees in an instant.
“So what do you want to know?” Minjoo asks him, the lad foolishly places his fingers on his chin, causing a chortle to erupt from the girl’s lips.
“Anything, just tell me anything about you.”
“Alright then, hi my name is Kim Minjoo and I was born on February 5. I love gummy bears, and my favourite ice cream flavor is chocolate.” The brunette casually said and the whole time, Junkyu’s eyes were darted on hers as if he was drawn.
He couldn’t help but admire the pretty face in front of him, the way she scrunches her nose when she’s thinking, the way she tilts her head when confused, her eyes that sparkles when she’s excited, her lips that always curves into a smile, everything.
It simply amuses him how she manages to be so effortlessly beautiful in everything that she does without even trying.
“Yah you weren’t even listening!” The younger pouts her lips upon noticing that her companion seems to be lost in his own thoughts. With that, the latter snapped back to reality and widened his eyes in realization.
“It’s not my fault, you just look so heavenly beautiful I can’t help but be drawn in your eyes.” He said nonchalantly, causing the lass to blush with the sudden compliment.
“W-whatever! It’s your turn, I’m not going to repeat everything that I just said, idiot.” Minjoo scoffs with her arms crossed as she tore her gaze away from the guy who could only chuckle at her cuteness.
“Well then Kim Minjoo, I’m Kim Junkyu. Born on September 9, I’m a handsome koala, I have a cat named Ruby and I have a voice that will surely capture your heart.” The lad purposely made his last sentence to appear flirty, something that the other was oblivious of.
“If that’s the case then I reckon you’ve had quite a few girlfriends.” The beauty smirks upon saying that.
“See that’s where you’re wrong. I never had a girlfriend before.” Junkyu admits as he scratched the back of his neck. The lass was taken aback upon hearing that but refuses to believe his words.
"I don't believe you, with a face like that and your so called voice that you claim can surely capture my heart? You're not fooling anybody." The brunette said without thinking twice, catching the lad off-guard.
"So basically you're telling me that I'm handsome? Is that it?" The older guy clasps his hands together and placed it on top of the table, eyes fixed on the girl while anticipating for her answer.
"W-what?" She was confused and upon realization, the younger blushed the moment it hits her and fake a cough while avoiding his gaze.
"What?" Junkyu chuckles seeing her reaction as he finds her cute. He was about to speak when they heard the bell in the café chime and they immediately caught two familiar figures laughing their way inside.
Why are they here? I thought they're going somewhere else?
The beauty ponders within herself, unaware of the attention she was giving her fiancée and her fairy crush. The lad turns to face her once again only to see his companion's eyes fixated on the pair.
"I heard you and Sakura are dating but it's complicated, that explains why she's having a date with Chaewon and you're here with me." Junkyu utters casually as if it's the most normal thing to say in the midst of their conversation.
"Dating?! N-no!" Minjoo utters with her voice raised, earning unwanted attention from other customers as well as the duo who was the subject of their talk. The guy raises a brow, wanting to be enlightened.
"That's what Yena told me though." His response caught the brunette by a surprise, her forehead creased in confusion as to why their duck of a friend would say that to Junkyu.
"She asked me if I have taken a liking for you and she told me that, so tell me what's making it complicated for the two of you?" He questioned but only out of courtesy. Truth be told, the lass didn't know what to tell him, she wanted to deny those rumors but there's something tugging inside her.
"Why would Yena even ask you that?"
"Because I do like you, and if your relationship with Sakura is complicated then I'm willing to wait until you can give a chance. For the mean time I can be your friend." The black haired guy flashed a genuine smile, one that Minjoo couldn't help but admire as she blushed because of his confession. With that, she decided to tell him the truth about her relationship with the Japanese.
"We have history, Sakura and I. We were known to be the infamous bickering duo, since freshman year we despise one another because of something that happened. We fight all the time over stupid little things, and lately we've been fighting over Chaewon because both of us actually have a crush on her. There's something between me and Sakura, but it is really complicated." The beauty beams apologetically, feeling remorse for the guy who just confessed. Leaving out the part of her engagement with the cherry blossom.
"So let me get this straight, you started off as enemies, turned into friends, then there's this thing between you two and both of you are also trying to pursue Chaewon on your own ways? Wow, well that's even more complicated than math, I gotta give it to you." Junkyu laughs, although a bit hurt after finding out but he's not giving up without a fight, right?
"But is it bad if I'm kinda hoping for Chaewon to fall for Sakura so that I could have you all to myself?" The young lad jokes half heartedly, hope seemingly present in his tone.
"Yah, are you the devil or something?! You should be rooting for me because I'm your friend." The beauty whines, making the guy before her chuckle.
Simultaneously, the said duo are also having the time of their lives together although a certain grey haired girl couldn't help but glance at her fiancée from time to time, something that the fairy was able to notice.
"Why are you giving them that look?" The younger asked as she wiggle her brows, as if teasing her companion.
"What look?"
"THAT murderous look, you're jealous aren't you?" Chaewon smirks and her last words caused the Japanese to snap her neck to face her.
"Jealous? Why would I even be jealous? I'm here with you if anything, she should be the one who's jealous but it seems like she's enjoying Junkyu's company even more." Sakura scoffs, leaning back with an unknown pout forming on her lips.
"Whatever floats your boat, mate." With that being said, the two brushed off the previous topic and the Japanese began to entertain the girl in front of her in any way she can think of.
They were supposed to hang out in the mall, but then the grey haired girl's plan changed and without any reason, she just started dragging the raven in this café after an hour of roaming around. Maybe it was to make a certain brunette jealous because she managed to get herself a date with their crush first, or maybe it was because she couldn't keep her head from wondering around the thought of the younger going out with a certain lad.
Unbeknowst to them, the brunette could not focus on tutoring the guy before her as she kept on stealing glances at the table with the Japanese and the fairy on it. Minjoo was slightly irritated that the former was able to put a smile on the beautiful fairy's face.
She wondered how many cheesy lines her foe was saying to Chaewon. She also hated the fact that the other was giving their crush all of her attention without even sparing her a glance. She knows their relationship took a turn after that night and she was happy that they finally got closer but she remembered that they were still love rivals. They both still like the singing fairy. Or maybe not.
"Uh, Minjoo?" The beauty was snapped out of her trance when the guy in front of her suddenly spoke. Junkyu noticed how his companion kept on glancing at the other table and how her facial features kept on changing in a matter of seconds. He looked at the table from across them and saw how two familiar girls are enjoying each other's company. He concluded that it must be the reason why Minjoo was bothered.
The latter had told him about her crush on Chaewon and her rivalry with Sakura. Heck, if he'd have someone as beautiful as the grey haired lass as his rival for Minjoo, he would certainly feel threatened is what he thought but little does he know.
"I'm sorry, Junkyu. Can we continue this another time?" The younger felt sorry for cutting the session short but she just couldn't focus as her attention kept on diverting to a particular pair.
"It's cool. I was hoping to ask you for another study date anyway." Junkyu winked at her, trying hard to hide the disappointment which earned him a chuckle from his partner.
"Can I walk you home?" The black haired guy asked after they finished cleaning and packing up their stuff.
"No, it's okay. My driver is already waiting outside." Minjoo felt bad for turning down the offer but she really didn't feel like being walked home right now, and since her engagement with Sakura was a secret, she can't risk being found out that they both live in the same house now. Especially now that five of their friends have busted them now long ago.
"Oh, okay. I'll just walk you to your car then." Truthfully, he felt disappointed because of the rejection but he didn't let that get to him. Maybe I'm moving too fast, he thought.
When the first pair have walked out of the cafe, the cherry blossom couldn't help but notice the distance between the two and she somehow furrowed her eyebrows and her own companion didn't fail to notice that.
Chaewon knew she was somehow jealous of the two being together but she was also confused why. The older claims that she likes her but she's also giving Minjoo and Junkyu the jealous look. She isn't sure what Sakura is feeling but she's sure that the the latter is confused with her feelings.
"Come here." The raven grabbed the Japanese's hand and dragged the her out of the cafe to follow a certain pair out. The latter was confused about what was happening but she just let the other do what she wants while she glances down at the hand that was holding hers.
The fairy dragged the feline to the parking lot and asked for the driver to open the trunk of her service car. She pulled her partner to let her sit on the trunk and then she follows. They both sat on the trunk of the car and stare at the sky changing hues. It was almost 6pm and the two just silently watched the sunset by the parking lot.
"How do you really feel about Minjoo, unnie?" The question startled the older and she turned to look at the younger girl beside her whose eyes were focused on the skyline. When she didn't answer her, Chaewon turned to face her.
"Unnie? You call me unnie now?" Sakura smirked at the the other which made her blush a little and turn away.
