Aisin-Goro Rongxian (courtsey name: Feiyan): The third princess of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty, 18 years old. An energetic girl with boundless curiousity, she has always wanted to know about the world beyond the glittering palace walls. She personally picked Yixing to be her bodyguard when they were children, and since then he has become her most trusted ally. 

Zhang Yixing: An orphan since childhood, he was plucked from the streets and brought into the royal palace to become an imperial guard when he was ten years old after fortuitously helping one of the head royal generals. His past is completely unknown even to himself. Feiyan was the one who gave him his name, and he is fiercely loyal to her alone. 

Wu Yifan: One of the head generals in the palace, and Yixing's close friend. He respects and acknowledges Yixing's skills and intelligence despite Yixing's commoner background and often becomes a helping hand to Yixing and Feiyan. A man with a hidden background.

Aisin-Goro Yinzhen (courtesy name: Luhan): Feiyan's older brother and the current crown prince, borne from the Empress who is now passed away. Although only a year older than Feiyan, he is wise and well aware of the careful balance he must keep between politics and emotions. 

Imperial Noble Consort Wen (Wen Zhiyu): The emperor's current favorite concubine and de facto head of the inner harem in the absence of an empress. She is supposedly of aristocratic blood but has her own vendetta in getting close to Emperor Kangxi.
