Emoticons. Found in texts, chats, and emails. They should not be found in story writing.

What not to do:

Don't write with emoticons. This is not a good way of showing how the character is feeling! It shows the reader that you're unprofessional and can't even describe a characters emotion or facial expression. 

Remember:

It would be clearer if you just explain how they look. A simple "Tears were falling" would be enough.
