Confrontation

Missed Opportunity

“Two medium caramel macchiatos please.”

The barista nodded as she took down the order. A few minutes later the waitress brought over both drinks. Seulgi thanked the person and pulled out her phone reading 9:01. ‘She’s late. Maybe she’s not coming?’ Seulgi started to wonder if she had been stood up when she heard the bells of the café door open and in walked Wendy. The girl looked around before settling her eyes on Seulgi and walking over.

“Hey, is that for me?” the girl asked as she sat down

Seulgi didn’t reply, she simply slid the drink over and the smaller woman gratefully accepted the cup and picked it up to take a sip.

“Mmm, I missed this. Canada has better coffee, but I they don’t quite make the drink the same way as they do here.”

Wendy looked over and when Seulgi didn’t speak, she continued. “On my way here, I passed by the mall we used to hang out all the time. Remember when we used to cut class and –”

“Wendy”

Wendy stopped and looked at Seulgi with a confused look.

“What are we doing here? You’ve been gone for five years. You didn’t call, you didn’t text. Hell I thought you were dead. And now you’re sitting across from me acting as if time hadn’t passed at all. Why?”

“I-uh…” Wendy looked down at her cup.

Seulgi waited for Wendy’s response, but after a few minutes she gave up. She didn't need this right now. She waited long enough and gathered her things to leave. She was about to walk away when she felt fingers wrap around her wrist. Seulgi stopped to look down. Wendy’s eyes wouldn’t meet hers, but she heard the quiver in the girl’s voice, “Please don’t go.”

Seulgi felt her heart ache. She never understood how the girl could make her feel like this. Just three words and her defense crumcled. She felt vulnerable and found herself sitting back down. After a few more seconds of silence, Wendy spoke again, “I can’t give you an explanation about why I was gone, at least not yet, but what I can tell you is that I missed you."

The girl took a deep breathe and looked into Seulgi's eyes, "I missed the days we used to drink so much coffee that we would stay up until 5 in the morning talking about absolutely nothing. I missed the days we would chat on the phone for hours when you couldn’t sleep over."

Seulgi didn't speak and kept looking at Wendy as the girl continued, “I thought you hated me for leaving. You hadn’t replied to my text from the airport and I— I just didn’t know what to think. Then I saw you last night at Sunmi’s party. It felt like something out of a movie.”

Wendy laughed as she shook her head, "Who knew out of all places I would meet you there. I mean I knew that you were a famous photographer in Korea. Even some of your work is displayed in Canada and it's beautiful. So I shouldn't have been that surprised to find out that you were in charge of Sunmi's photoshoot."

'She's seen my work? Has she been following me?'

Seulgi's thoughts were interrupted when Wendy leaned over to grab her hand.

“I know I can’t turn back the clock, but can we try this again? I missed my best friend.”

Wendy was looking at Seulgi with earnest eyes, but when she didn't answer right away, Wendy blurted out, "I understand if you say no though. I mean I shouldn't expect you to get over everythin-" Seulgi squeezed the girl's hand to stop her from talking. She always had a tendency to ramble on.

Seulgi couldn't help but sigh for the umpteenth time. There was a small voice in Seulgi's head that told her not to do it. That she shouldn't let this happen again, but her heart was telling her otherwise. She would be lying if she said she didn’t miss having the Canadian by her side. Seulgi contemplated for a few more seconds before whispering ‘okay’.

Wendy widened her eyes before getting up to pull Seulgi into a hug and all the worries Seulgi had about restarting their friendship suddenly disappeared as the other girl buried her face into Seulgi’s neck. Seulgi slowly wrapped her arms around the petite girl and inhaled her scent. She didn't realize how much she missed this.

When they let go of each other Wendy said she had to go, but not before giving Seulgi her new phone number. Seulgi watched as the girl walked out of the café and couldn’t help but think ‘what have I gotten myself into?’

--

“Seungwan, hurry up, the movie is about to start!”

“Coming”

The brunette jumped onto the couch and pulled the blanket over herself, “I’m ready.”

Seulgi smiled as she hit play.

It had been a little over a month since the two started hanging out again. Seulgi was surprised how everything seemed to fall back into place. The two were meeting regularly at the coffee shop, except after work now instead of before class. They were also busy catching each other up.

“Stop calling me Wendy, I liked it when you used to call me Seungwan”

“I can’t believe you haven’t eaten at all the famous restaurants in Toronto yet.”

“Do you still draw Seul? You have to show me your sketches next time.”

“You produced music for Justin Bieber? Yeri would be so jealous.”

“I’m not even surprised Irene came out with a skincare business. She was always known for her beauty in college.”

The two talked about anything and everything. They soon started watching movies together again, just like tonight. It felt as if no time had passed until halfway through the movie, Seungwan receives a phone call.

The girl excuses herself and Seulgi pauses the movie. She overhears the entire conversation.

“Yeah I’m at Seulgi’s right now… Well I haven’t seen her in years, I’m trying to make up for it… I told you we could go to dinner next Thursday… I promise I’ll make it up to you Chanyeol…Alright, I love you too, bye.”

Seungwan returned to the couch and Seulgi suddenly didn’t feel well. She knew that Seungwan met Chanyeol when the man visited Canada to record music. She met him and he was perfect for Seungwan, the perfect gentleman, but she couldn’t help the feeling of jealousy and anger that rose in whenever she heard the girl talk about him. Seungwan had come back to her after all these years, but her heart hadn’t and the idea of not having all of Seungwan was killing Seulgi.

She didn't notice when the other girl sat back down, “Seul, are you okay? You look kind of pale.”

She flinched when Seungwan reached out to caress her face, “Yeah I’m fine, I just need to use the restroom, be right back.”

She got up and speed walked to the bathroom. After closing the door, she ran over to the sink and splashed cold water onto her face.

‘Get it together Seulgi. She’s back. That should be more important than anything.’

Seulgi looked at herself in front of the mirror for a few more minutes before drying her face and walking out.

“Hey, are you ok?”

Seulgi put on a smile, “Yeah, sorry about that. Must’ve been the pizza earlier. Let’s finish the movie.” She sat down and pressed play hoping the film would distract her.

Fifteen mimutes had passed when Seulgi felt a weight on her shoulder. She looked down to see Seungwan’s eyes closed. Seulgi held her breath as she took in the sight. The shorter girl was always insecure about the way she looked, but Seulgi found her gorgeous. She slowly lifted her hand to tuck a strand of hair behind the younger girl’s ear. Seeing the girl so peaceful made Seulgi’s heart melt. She couldn't help but whisper, “Wannie…you know I missed you right? I hope you never leave again.”

Seulgi turned off the television and put her arm around the smaller girl before closing her eyes. She decided not to wake up the other. Irene was staying over at Bogum’s today so she didn’t have to worry about the older girl walking in on the two.

What she didn’t know was that Seungwan heard everything.
