The Worst Coffee
Forced to Date YouChanyeol quickly packed up his stuff after Wendy called him. He got onto his car and raced his way to what he and Wendy call the ‘Worst Cafe in Seoul.’ Their coffee was just... .
While driving, he couldn’t help but fume. He knew this was going to happen. Every damn time, he kept on warning his best friend. But she just wouldn’t listen. Sunggyu was notorious in celebrity circles for being a playboy, but Wendy was so goddamn whipped. He doesn’t even understand what she saw in him. Sure, he seemed like the friendliest guy on television, and okay, Sunggyu can be charismatic on the stage, but the rumors persisted. There must have been some truth to them.
He rushed to find a parking space near the cafe. He jumped out of the car in a hurry, but he stopped right outside the cafe. He saw Wendy by the corner of the cafe, near the window, staring into her glass of water. He wanted to laugh – of course she just got water, it is the worst cafe in Seoul, after all. But he couldn’t get himself to do it. Wendy’s eyes were red and puffy. Wendy always paid attention to what she was wearing when going out because of the paps, but this time, she was just wearing a black cap, a loose black shirt, and some training pants.
The last time she saw Wendy like this was her first Chuseok in Seoul seven years ago. Her parents stayed in Canada, and she was all alone for Korea’s biggest holiday, when families gathered to celebrate and give thanks. She was extremely close to her parents, and she became even more homesick when the other Red Velvet members went to their respective hometowns to celebrate the holidays with their families. Wendy couldn’t help but cry at the thought of spending Chuseok alone for the first time in her life, without her parents and sister, until Chanyeol saw her and invited her to his family’s gathering. He couldn’t bear seeing Wendy so gloomy on what was supposed to be a festive occasion.
She hesitated at first; she didn’t want to intrude Chanyeol’s time with his family, but he insisted. Chanyeol’s mother was ecstatic to meet Wendy, thinking that her son finally got himself a good girlfriend. Chanyeol explained that Wendy was just his close friend; she was spending her Chuseok alone, so he decided to invite her. Wendy kept on volunteering to help his mother and sister in preparing the food and cleaning the dishes, among other chores, despite Chanyeol’s efforts in stopping her. She was the guest, but she kept on helping out. Needless to say, his mother fell in love with Wendy. Just before Chanyeol and Wendy were to leave, Chanyeol’s mother dragged him into his room.
“Chanyeol, tell me the truth. Are you dating her or not?” His mother was looking at him seriously.
“Ma, I already told you. We’re just really close friends,” Chanyeol was trying his best not to roll his eyes.
“She would make a good daughter-in-law for me, you know. I can sense that she’s a kind, sweet and ridiculously smart girl. A bonus is that she’s also really pretty and she’s good at cooking, and you’re so damn hungry all the time,” his mom teased. He could sense though that his mom was serious.
“Mom, please. I need to go now,” he hugged his mom, said his i-love-yous, and went back to Seoul with Wendy.
