I woke up,

My eyes feeling slightly swollen.

I adjust my body slightly so that I can see your face.

You’re peaceful, serene in your sleep.

I steal a kiss from your lips

And plant a few more on your cheeks and forehead.

“I stand beside you,

I face the future,

I’ll admit to you,

I’m afraid.

I am afraid as I stand beside you

I have denied you,

I am afraid.”

I hate what I’ve become.

I hate that I hit you all just because you needed me when I was hurting.

Why didn’t I see that I need you as much as you need me?

We’re floating on the surface of the ocean,

You’re my buoy that keeps me afloat,

Why didn’t I see that?

You keep thanking me for saving you,

But do you know how much I need you to save me?

I hate what he did to me.

I hated every moment I tortured our cat, Bobby,

As his words rung in my ear.

They still do.

“Love hurts.

If you hurt what you love,

Then that’s a good thing.

Because love is shown through hurt,

Is it not?

I hurt you because I love you.

You’re hurting Bobby because you love him.

It all makes sense to me.

Just keep hurting what you love.

Because if you don’t,

They’re going to hurt you instead.”

I still hear his words ringing in my ears.

Really?

Do I have to hurt what I love?

But I cannot bear to hurt you,

Even though I already have.

I kiss your eyelids once again before turning around to snuggle into your arms.

I’ll fight this,

I know I can.

As long as you’re here to keep me afloat.

I don’t ever want to hurt you again.
