Everyone Has a String
Red Stringhttp://www.newgrounds.com/audio/listen/407666
I woke up this morning feeling quite heavy and not so refreshed.
"Can I just not go to school today?" My laziness spoke. "Ugh no but I have midterms today." My brain retorted. And so I got up and out of bed, almost tripping on my way to my bathroom. After reaching my destination-quite messily must I add-I took a look in my mirror down to the reflection of my hands. "Hmph, still no string." And I proceeded to get ready for school.
Going to school was never a fun thing for me. One reason being the fact that I'm walking myself to school, but the other reason being the amount of strings I get to witness.
Yes, it sometimes can be heartwarming. Watching an old couple still revolving around love as their strings radiate a heart fluttering aura, or a young couple out on a date for the first time, the string fluttering like the small heart beats of the couple. Other times, it's not very fun to walk by a tangled knot or a couple having a nice time with their strings facing away from each other.
So I always tended to face the ground when walking. That is why, on my way to the subway, I stumbled upon the vibrant string again. The lively, beautiful, cut string. Following the string was a crouched figure, tending to two dogs and their puppies. A smile grew on my lips as I trailed a single string flowing from one paw to another. Yes, even dogs have strings. Everyone does.
"Sungjae?" The figure turned around, his expression showing a kind of surprise.
"Oh? Good morning, Eunji!" He stood up to face me. "Wow I'm surprised you recognized me!" My thoughts almost spilled through my mouth. Fortunately, they didn't.
"It's hard to forget someone as tall as you are." It's hard to forget a string like yours. "What were you doing?" For an unknown reason, we began walking together, towards my subway stop.
"I was on my way to school when I spotted that cute little family! I couldn't just look at them and walk away without petting them." A sheepish hand rubbed the back of his neck. The end of the lively string bobbed up and down. "It was also my way of stalling."
"Stalling? What for?"
"Ah, I have midterms today." We got on the subway together.
"Is that so? What a coincidence, so do I." A chuckle was heard and I looked up at his tall figure in confusion.
"It's not a coincidence. We're in the same class." My mind fell blank as I tried to recall my classmates. My eyes rolled to the back of my head as if searching for any memory of my fellow classmates. I couldn't remember any of my classmates.
"I should probably pay more attention to my surroundings. I'm sorry I didn't recognize you."
"It's fine. At least now I finally have the chance to get to know you!" My eyebrows formed a frown and a tickle was felt in my chest.
"You speak as if you've been trying to find the opportunity to speak with me."
"Well, you're not wrong." He showcased a charming smile as our subway came to stop. "Better get off if you don't want to miss the midterm." He took my hand, pulling me off the crowded car. The tickle in my chest grew.
It was confusing to me, as I had never felt a tickle in my chest. I've felt knots in my throat when holding in a cry. I've felt burns in my chest when holding in anger. I've felt so many things, both negative and positive, but I've never felt a tickle. Not in my chest. Not where my heart is supposed to be. It was an unusual feeling, but not necessarily an unpleasant feeling either.
We walked into class together, and we sat beside each other as we took the test. And of course, subsequent to the test, we came out together, talking and laughing as if we've been long time friends.
"I swear, this was the hardest test I've ever taken. I'm pretty sure I failed this test." An exasperated sigh was heard coming from his mouth above my head.
"I agree. After this, I'm just ready to go back home and sleep." He stopped ahead of me and bent down to reach my height.
"Hey, come on, it's still midday! You can't go to bed now! Besides, I just met you, and I want to get to know you better. How about we go do something together?" I raised a brow as I looked him straight in the eye.
"Are you asking me out on a date?" A line of red was shown growing across his cheeks. I looked down, and it seemed as though the string had begun to blush as well. How peculiar.
"Maybe?"
Oh.

Anyway this is a really bad update but I do want to keep the story going. I'm sorry this chapter is more filled with dialogue rather than detail. I'll try to equal things out better next time. In the mean time, I hope you enjoyed this chapter! Thank you~
