Episode Nine

Twenty-One :: A JYP Survival Show
The Final Boss

For the first time since the second episode, all twenty one trainees are gathered in the practice room.

The room seems smaller than normal, partly from angle editing and party from the heavy tension that has settled over all the contestants as they wait in silence.

The CEO is standing at the front of the room, holding a closed envelope. Beside him is the MC, who looks nearly as tense as the contestants, though his expression reveals nothing.

The sound of the CEO opening the envelope is as loud as a gunshot in the heavy air, and a few of the boys actually flinch at the sudden noise.

The CEO makes a show of clearing his throat before pulling out the paper and giving it a quick scan before returning his focus to the trainees.

"Now then, today nine of you will be permanently dropped from the competition, while three of you have been given one more chance to try and make the final lineup. We have a lot to do in the next day so I won't waste time and get straight to the eliminations."

Despite his words, he does take a longer-than-necessary pause to breath while the contestants fidget. Finally he speaks again.

"The five people ranked lowest two episodes ago were Collin, Danny, Do Sanghyun, Koda, and Na Sanghyun."

TJ reaches out and grabs Koda's wrist in a death grip when his friend's name is called.

"Now you'll realize three of these five were immune last round. And miraculously none of you ranked last."

The whole room is motionless as the CEO drags out the elimination, but finally the first name is spoken.

"Koda. Unfortunately you did come in last place, although it was only by a few votes. However you have been eliminated."

TJ's voice cuts over the CEO's final word. "Bull sh*t! Bull sh*t there is no ing way this is happening."

JYP is not amused by the outburst. "TJ calm down or I'll eliminate you as well."

"Do it! Just do it for god's sake, this whole show has been ing torture for me, and now when it's finally almost over you elminated my best friend? He's the only damn reason I'm still sane. Do not tell me to calm down, I have every right to be pissed!"

Shockingly it's Koda himself who brings TJ back down. "Dude it's cool. Clearly the world wasn't ready for my awesomeness, I'll get it next time." He sounds slightly pained but is still grinning brightly.

Apparently Koda acting mature is a shocking enough situation to get every person in the room staring at him like an alien had just burst out of his chest. He rolls his eyes.

"Guys I know I'm totally awesome, but you don't have to stare so much, your jealousy is embarrassing."

And just like that the spell is broken, and JYP clears his throat as he returns to the paper in his hands.

"Our second and third lowest ranked contestants are the two Sanghyuns, but as both of you have immunity you'll be participating in the final round. Instead our ninth place Collin will be eliminated."

Collin lowers his head, eyes dark with frustration, but he stays silent as JYP continues speaking.

"Now our eigth placed contestant is Danny, who was also immune this round, meaning," He pauses dramatically to look at the contestants, "That someone not in the bottom five will be cut this round."

Everyone shifts uncomfortably and a few of the boys look panicked, including Soengjun. However the CEO's eyes go past the dancer and come to rest almost reluctantly on Ant.

"As our seventh place, I'm afraid you've been eliminated Ant."

The composer shows no response to the news but several of the other contestants get upset.

"He wasn't even in the bottom five! It's the last episode doesn't that mean people like him? That's not fair!" Surprisingly it's Do Sanghyun who's the loudest, and JYP turns to him.

"Are you offering to forgo your immunity to keep him on the show?"

Sanghyun immiediately closes his mouth and begins studying his feet as the rest slowly calm down as well. JYP clears his throat and continues.

"Good, now for the contestants being given a chance to participate in the final round we have Soul from our first group,"

"Yes!" Soul can't seem to resist the grin that tears across his face the moment his name is read. JYP ignores him and continues.

"Jihyun from the second group,"

Jihyun's grin is cocky as usual, but there's an underlying determination and seriousness that had before not been present.

"And finally, much to my surprise, G. You're back in the competition."

G barely reacts to the news, but the rest of the trainees are shocked enough for him.

"Wait what?"

"He was cut in the first episode!"

"How does that even happen?"

JYP lets the chaos swell for a moment before he reigns it back in. "Alright if you're not competing in the final challenge, then please exit the room, we need to get started on the challenge." His voice carries a heavy authority, and slowly the eliminated boys file out of the room.

Koda exits last, mostly due to the fact TJ still has a death grip on his wrist. Hongsol and Jude both have to help separate the two, and TJ slumps against Hongsol when the door shuts, exhausted and beaten.

JYP shows no interesting in the mini drama playing out near the door as he focuses on the remaining contestants. "Now the twelve of you have the next twelve hours to prepare solo presentations of your talents. Now all groups need main and lead ranked members, and MC Hong was kind enough to go over your monthly evaluations from the past several months and determined the best way to pair you off." He ponders for a moment before adding, "It should be noted these pairings are not necessarily fair due to the fact we ended up with an... imbalance of talents." He chooses the word carefully.

Seongjun smirks a bit and glances over at Jihyun and KimQ, who miss the look at they're fully focused on the CEO.

JYP continues. "Now we'll start with those of you competing for a main title. Soul and Jude, you're our best vocalists, so you'll be deuling for main vocal."

Jude nods silently while Soul looks defeated already, though he nods as well.

"For the main rapper it will be Xaris againt G."

"Again." Xaris points out quietly. G only nods as the CEO continues.

"For our main dancers there was some trouble since we have three strong dancer remaining in the competition. However we ultimately decided that KimQ and Jihyun will fight for the main dancer title and Seongjun, you'll be against Na Sanghyun for lead dancer."

Seongjun looks accepting of this, but Na Sanghyun looks like someone punched him in the gut.

"For our other two leads we'll have Do Sanghyun against Hongsol for our lead vocalist and Danny against TJ for Lead Rapper."

Danny looks confused. "Does TJ even rap?" But he's ignored as the CEO finishes his speech.

"Each of you will give a performance of your talent this afternoon, so you'll have until then to create something. I reccommend starting now since you won't have extra time to practice once the performances have started. Dismissed."

The CEO leaves, and the moment the door closes chaos erupts.

"Lead dancer? I'm not good enough for that, not to mention Seongjun is main material!" Na Sanghyun is immediately fretting over hi placement. Danny pats him awkwardly on the shoulder, apparently unsure of what else to do.

Hongsol isn't nearly as worried as he smiles over at Do Sanghyun, a faint look of defeat lingering on his features. "Well let's both do our best!" He says encouragingly. For his part Do Sanghyun looks much more nervous despite being the more skilled between the two of them.

Meanwhile Soul has already left the room, only to run into the MC just outside the door.

"Mind if I ask a few quetions?"

Soul grits his teeth. "Just one. I have to practice."

The MC nods in understanding. "How do you feel being paired against Jude knowing that you've lost to him once before?"

Soul's eyes are determined as he responds. "It won't happen again." And with that he's gone.

G and Xaris exit not long after and the MC asks G the same question.

The rapper shrugs. "I wasn't even expecting to get back in, so at this point I'd say anything is possible. We'll both do our best and we'll see how things turn out."

Xaris has already left so the MC waits a moment for the last contestants to come out. He nods politely to them as they pass.

TJ leaves last, and the MC stops him.

"So how are you feeling?"

The glare TJ levels at the camera could kill. "How do you think?"

The MC sighs as the teen trudges away. The sound cuts to faint music as the scenes slowly shift between the twelve contestants as they practice.

Soul is alone in a private practice room, singing emotionally but pausing every few minutes with a look of discontent. He has his guitar with him and he make several notes on the sheet music he has in front of him as well, contstantly erasing and writing over and over.

In another room Jude is much more relaxed, running warm ups as he shuffles through sheet music, clearly deciding on what song he wants to perform. Hongsol pops in at one point and the two talk for a bit beore Jude claps him on the shoulder with a warm smile and Hongsol leaves again.

The image changes to show him arriving in another room, this one with a trainer. The woman greets him warmly and he gives her a beaming smile in return. She runs him through a few vocal warm ups, and then he hands her some sheet music and speaks a bit nervously. She lightly ruffles his hair and responds kindly before starting to play the presented music.

Down the hall G and Xaris are sharing a smaller group practice room. The two seem to mostly be doing their own work but occasionally one will say something to the other, appearing to be giving critics or suggestions. Xaris looks a bit frustrated each time G mentions something, but he seems to always follow the advice as G gives no indication that it's been ignored. For his part G mostly seems unconcerned, focusing on his rap completely though he does pause and listen whenever Xaris offers advice.

The dancers are also sharing a studio, but they seem to be either finished or taking a break as they're apperently having a dance-off. A few other trainees, including Koda and Noheul, have gathered around to watch them and shout encouragements every so often. The video momentarily slows and the sound cuts back into the show for a short section of their battle.

(KimQ:Red and Black Sweater       Jihyun:Colorful T-Shirt       Noheul:Talks @ end       Koda:Hat @ the end)

While everyone is still laughing at Koda and the female trainee, the sound cuts back out and the video speeds up again, changing to the next contestant.

Do Sanghyun is by himself in another private room. He seems to be singing the same section of a song over and over, grimacing and drinking from his wather bottle between each take. It's clear he's not happy with the song he's working with, but he sticks with it, rewiding his IPod over and over agian.

Danny and Na Sanghyun seem equally frustrated when the camera changes to show them sharing a room. Each is doing their own thing, barely speaking to each other. Na Sanghyun especially seems stressed out as he repeatedly stretches between each short bit of dancing he does. Just before the image changes someone walks into the room and Na Sanghyun lights up.

Then the scene then cuts to TJ, who isn't even in a practice room. The teen is sitting in the otherwise empty dorms, staring at his hands which are folded on the table.

The screen goes dark, and the music cuts out, replaced by a soft voice: "This isn't fun anymore."

The twelve final contestants are gathered in the familiar backstage area.

They're standing in their pairs, though for the most part they aren't speaking to each other. There's a faint sound indicating there's a crowd in the theatre, but otherwise the air is motionless.

Finally the MC enters the room, looking a bit worn but concealing it as best he can. "Alright then, I trust you're all prepared?" He doesn't get a response, though this doesn't phase him as he continues. "Well then we'll be starting off with our rappers to hype up the crowd. Danny, you're up first, TJ you'll be waiting in the wings."

TJ opens his mouth to respond but the MC has already left with Danny close behind.

Hongsol pats him on the shoulder. "You'll be great out there Doyeon-ah!" He encourages.

TJ sighs. "I won't actually. I'm not going out. I decided, if Koda isn't debuting then I'm going to wait."

Everyone stares at him in surprise as he leaves.

"Well I wouldn't have called that." Jihyun quips, but is silenced by a look from Jude.

The camera shot changes to show the theatre. Sure enough, every seat is filled with excitedly chattering fans as they await the final showdown. The curtains rustle and the murmuring dies down somewhat before going completely silent as the lights dim and the curtains swing open completely.

The MC comes on from the side, illuminated by a spotlight as he walks. He begins speaking as soon as he reaches the microphone.

"Hello and welcome to the final showdown! Tonight we will discover once and for all who will be debuting in the new JYP boy group! Each of our remaining contestants will be competing against each other for their positions in the group. First up we have Danny and TJ combatting for the lead rapper position!"

Several fan wave fans excitedly for their favorite contestants as the MC exits and the stage goes dark again. Music starts to play, and the fans start shouting excitedly as the rapper enters the stage.

As the performance goes, the MC's voice comes in over the sound, clearly something that had been recorded seperately and was added in during editing.

"I admit I could have put Jihyun against Danny for lead rap, but the rivalry between Danny and TJ has been clear from the start. I felt it was appropriate for the two of them to face off in the final challenge."

The performance comes back to the forefront, just as Danny starts singing, and a reaction shot of the MC, standing with TJ in the wings, shows both parties quite surprised by the development. The rest of the performance plays out uninterrupted, save the screams of the fans.

Danny bows at the end of his performance somewhat overdramatically, but the fans love it, and he leaves the stage with a bright grin.

"Can't wait to see you top that." He says to TJ as they pass, teasingly competitive.

"I'm not." TJ replies flatly. Leaving the confused Danny and MC backstage he walks onto the stage and screams even louder than the ones Danny had received.

The camera briefly flashes to Danny, who's frowning in slight dissapointment.

TJ clears his throat and waves for quiet. "Hey! Wow that was really a crazy moment for me you have no idea." He laughs. "I'm so happy you guys have been supporting me this whole time! I didn't think I'd make it very far, but here I am, all thanks to my lovely fans!"

Several of the audience shouts approval and he laughs again, before his expression turns serious.

"However, this morning the results of the last round of voting came in." His voice is somewhat heavy, and every audience member seems completely absorbed in his speech as the camera briefly pans to the audience.

"So you guys probably know this show has been pretty rough for me. Almost getting eliminated in the first round, and then again everything with Byunjae a few weeks ago. It... I'm not the best at stuff like that. Not being happy." His hand is tight around the mic but he pushes on, eyes closed as he speaks.

"Honestly I wouldn't have made it through all that without Koda. You guys have probably noticed, but he's kind of my best friend, even more so now than when the show started." He goes quiet for a moment, and you could hear a pin drop the audience is so motionless, waiting for him to finish.

"He was eliminated this morning." TJ's voice cracks a bit, and he laughs awkwardly to try and cover it. A few audience members 'aw' and TJ shoots them a shaky grin.

"Yeah, it kind of . And I was thinking all day today and I realized that I don't think I can debut without him. Not after everything that's happened. So I'm conceeding. Danny-hyung is older and has been training longer than me, he deserves this debut. But I hope that you'll still support me and Koda when we debut in the future!" His grin becomes a bit more powerful as he finishes the speech, "And I promise you we'll be debuting, and we're going to be awesome!"

Several fans cheer at the final words, and TJ laughs again before waving and walking off stage. He nods to Danny, hands the mic to the MC, and heads back towards the dressing rooms.

Danny is stunned, but the MC recovers quickly.

"Danny go tell Xaris and G to get ready and into the wings as fast as possible while I introduce them." He doesn't wait to see if the rapper follows his orders before walking out onto the stage, smiling widely as the camera view changes to again show the stage from an audience perspective

"Well wasn't that quite the opening act! We'll have to see if anyone can top that performance, won't we?"

The audience cheers, and the MC waits for them to calm down before continuing.

"Alright then, our next battle tonight will be for the position of main rapper! These two have battled before, but perhaps this time things will turn out differently! Up first we have our defending contestant, Xaris!"

The audience's cheers follow the MC offstage, where he looks around almost frantically before spotting Xaris in one of the wings and relaxing. He nods to the rapper, who grins back and heads onto the stage. He waves cheerfully and shoots the front row a wink, causing the screams to start up again.

He wastes no music and dives straight into his rap.

After his performance finishes, the MC's thoughts come in over the crowd's screams, as they did during Danny's song.

"I felt a bit bad putting Xaris and G against each other again, but with Ant eliminated they were the only viable contenders for the main rapper position."

As the crowd's cheers die down Xaris finally exits, still waving and grinning suavely at the crowd.

G walks out with significantly less fanfare, but if it bothers him it doesn't show. He stops centef stage, takes a short breath, and then flows right into his rap.

During the performance the camera briefly shows Xaris heading into the dressing room and waving for Na Sanghyun and Seongjun to head out and get ready, before it switches back to focusing on G.

The cheers are much louder when he finishes, and he allows a small smirk and a bow before he heads off, nodding to the MC as they cross paths.

The MC waves for silence, and after a moment the fans quiet down to hear who's going next.

"After these performances we'll be taking a short break, but for now we'll be seeing a duel of dancers! Competing tonight for the position of lead dancer we have Na Sanghyun versus Seongjun!"

The camera pans over the audience and cathces several surprised faces within it, though the cheering is as loud as ever as the MC exits.

The stage is empty for a moment before Na Sanghyun scurries on - and then exits again on the other side. A moment later he reappears pushing a bench onto the stage.

A girl comes out from behind the curtain to help him, and the fans immediately start screaming.

TWICE's Momo pauses to wave at the crowd, smiling shyly, before going back to checking that the bench is well placed. Once the two are satisfied Sanghyun exits again and Momo settles on the bench, nodding to the sound techs that they're ready for their music to start.

The screaming is nearly deafening as the two embrace for a moment longer before breaking apart. Sanghyun is a bit red but Momo is smiling widely, waving at the fans and giggling.

The sound fades as the MC's usual thoughts sound over the video. "I was unsure about this pairing at first, but honestly Sanghyun - er, Na Sanghyun that is - is a better dancer than he gives himself credit for. His marks aren't as high as say Jihyun's, but he's got a style and rythm that I think will give him at least something of a fair chance in this battle."

By the time the sound is back in full force the audience has mostly calmed down. Sanghyun and Momo both work to move the bench back into the wings, and Seongjun runs out from the side to help them.

Both bow to the other dancer before seeming to wish him luck and head backstage again.

Seongjun milks the fans, conducting their screams cheerfully, fully enjoying his moment in the spotlight. Even when the music does start he's still playing with the crowd, slowly warming up and taking his time easing into the dance.

Through the performance he keeps playing to the audience, showing off both his skills and his stage charisma, and the continued screaming after he's exited is testament that he did well.

Na Sanghyun laughs and claps the other on the back as he arrives back stage, buttoning up his shirt as he does. Seongjun grins back and offers him a high-five, which is happily given.

The MC eyes the interaction with amusement before heading back onto the stage.

"Well then, that marks the first half of our show tonight! We'll have a fifteen minute break so if you need a restroom go now. I hope you're ready for some more amazing performances when we come back!"

The hallway outside the theatre is crammed with fans as they buy snacks and race to the washrooms.

The cameras set up in the halls pick up snippets of conversation as people walk past.

"Na Sanghyun really surprised me!"

"Oh my gosh I thought I was going to cry when TJ talked about Koda! They're my OTP!"

"I hate to be that guy but I mean Danny was seriously sub-par to G and Xaris, can't they just put both of them into the final group?"

"Oh my god Momo was there! She was so good, total girl crush material!"

"Good lord Seongjun is rude. How dare he even. How dare."

The lights flicker in the hall and everyone begins filing back into the theatre, with one last thought being caught over the chaos.

"Oh my gosh I just realized it's going to be the main dancers next! I can't wait!"

The camera in the theatre shows everyone filing back into their seats, their chatter now a blur of unintelligble words. The lights go dark and MC takes his place in the spotlight, waving to keep everyone's attention on him. The audience finally settles down and he begins introducing the next pair.

"Our next duo will be competing for the title of main dancer, and I'm sure both of them have prepared something quite impressive for us tonight! We'll be starting with KimQ's performance, and then Jihyun will show us what he's prepared. You ready?" He seems much more energetic than he had during the first part, and the audience feeds off his new energy, shouts and applause flooding the air as the MC exits and KimQ walks onstage.

The dancer takes a few breathes, and begins moving as soon as the music begins playing.

The crowd is in awed silence throughout the performance, and the MC's thoughts aren't edited in until the last notes fade and the audience erupts.

"Honestly I feel that while they have different styles KimQ and Jihyun easily have the best command of the stage when they dance. There's an effortless skill they both bring to the table, so I feel of all the pairs they're the most evenly balanced in terms of the position they're fighting for."

KimQ is extremely polite as he repeatedly bows to the audience, thanking them though it can't be heard over the roar of the crowd. Finally he heads offstage and nods to Jihyun, who grins and heads onstage confidently.

He waves to the crowd, and then just like KimQ flows straight into his dance the moment his music sounds over the speakers.

This time the crowd shouts and cheers during the performance, and when he finishes Jihyun looks extremely happy, waving to the fans and even crouching down at the front of the stage to shout thanks to the people up front over the sound.

He waves again happily as he stands up and begins exiting, though he takes his time, waving and interacting with the crowd for as long as he can before he finally vanishes into the wing.

The wing cameras show KimQ offering a handshake, which Jihyun turns into a high five. The two are joined shortly after by Hongsol and Do Sanghyun, the former who appears to enthusiastically congratulate both dancers before the two head back to the waiting room, leaving the lead vocal contestants waiting for their turn to perform.

Back onstage the MC has returned and is hyping up the crowd.

"As expected from two veteran performers, those were quite impressive dances! But it's not over yet, we still have the spots that may well be the most important ones in the entire group, our vocalists!"

He pauses to let people cheer before continuing. "Well I won't keep you waiting! We'll start with our lead vocal contestants, Do Sanghyun and Hongsol!" He lets the cheers usher him off, and he claps Hongsol on the shoulder as the young man heads onto the stage.

Hongsol looks almost like a kicked puppy as he looks nervously out at the audience, before he takes a quick breath to steady himself. He grabs a chair from backstage and drag it out to the center before flopping into it rather awkwardly. He clears his throat, and then nods for the techs to start the music.

The crowd sways along to his song, and they cheer enthusiastically when he finishes, leaving him blushing but smiling widely as he grabs the chair and makes a hasty exit.

Perhaps surprisingly Do Sanghyun looks almost as nervous as Hongsol had when he walks onto the stage, but he doesn't hesitate to signal for the music, not taking any time to look at the crowd as he closes his eyes and takes a few breaths before begining to sing.

The MC's thoughts come in over his performance briefly.

"This pairing is interesting to me, since they're extremely different. Hongsol is much more of an emotional singer where Do Sanghyun is all about technique so I feel that this duel may be determined more by preference than actual ability."

The crowd cheers as he finishes, and as he relaxes he takes a bit more time to wave and smile at everyone before he heads backstage, looking much more confident than he had before the song.

The MC gives him a grin as they pass onstage, and Sanghyun nods back almost akwardly before vanishing into the wings.

The MC lets the crowd cheer for a bit longer before he finally waves for silence and their attention.

"Well then, how is everyone enjoying our performances so far?"

The cheers are nearly deafening and he grins.

"Great to hear! We only have two more presentations tonight unfortunately, but I have the feeling they'll be the best you've seen so far! For our grand finale we have a familiar pair vying for the main vocal position of the group, perhaps one of the most important ones in any group. Starting us off in our final battle, Soul!"

Soul walks on confidently, guitar in hand. He has no back up music. Instead he smiles and waves and patiently waits for the theatre to grow quiet enough for his strumming to be heard.

The audence remains silent and enraptured as he sings, as soulful as his stagename would indicate. Even the MC's usual thoughts don't interrupt the longer performance.

For several seconds after the song ends the final notes ring through the theatre, unimpeeded by any other noise.

The the crowd breaks.

Screams and cheers pour intensely from the theatre and Soul blinks hard as he smiles and waves out at the fans. The knuckles of the hand curled around his guitar are white and there's a slight tremble in his hands, but his smile is blinding as he slowly makes his way back into the wing, holding onto the cheer as long as he can.

The MC's thoughts come in over the cheers as Soul exits.

"I admit I don't feel quite as bad about these two ending up against each other again. Jude and Soul are our best vocalists hands down, so really no matter who was left these two would end up dueling. It will be interesting to see if Soul can turn things around and beat Jude for this spot though, considering that Jude is general more popular. But honestly I feel bot deserve the title."

Soul finally exits and Jude walks on to a symphony of screams. However he barely seems to register them as he takes center stage and lowers his head, signalling for the music to begin.

The screams are just as loud as they had been for Soul, and Jude now takes time to wave and engage with the crowd with the song finished. The MC joins him onstage along with the other eleven contestants, who crowd at the front of the stage to wave and shake hands with the eager fans.

The MC has to shout into the mic to be heard over the noise. "And that's our show tonight! Don't forget to go home and vote for your favorite performance, and tune in next week for the final episode and the official line up! Thank you all and goodnight!"

( AUTHOR'S NOTE ) Okay this chapter is late and a thousand word shorter than normal and I am so sorry. Midterms guys, you know how it goes. I do hope the chapter was still okay despite my brain being mushy, and can you believe there's only one more episode??? Who's excited to see the final lineup?? I know I am!

And on that note: vote vote vote! It's only the polls this week so voting will close on Friday at noon CST. I will try to get the next episode out on time - I won't have an evil teacher stressing me out next weekend so we should be good!

Chapter 53: Oh boy here we go again. Everyone strap on your safety belts: feelings are coming.

Oooh Byunjae. Of course he's calculating his way into an easy, we knew he'd do that. And I suppose we'll see more of him in the next bts too. You know how I feel about him and it's not altogether positive, but I suppose that in and of itself is a win for you. As long as I feel something you did your job well, and I certainly feel something for this pipsquick. "There is one person who has escaped rightful elimination." I knew this was coming but also off Byungjae DO NOT TOUCH MY DOYEON. Thankfully I also know how this happens.

SPEAK OF THE ANGEL. Oh honey. "This is fine" is the thing we tell ourselves when we desperately need that to be true.

"It almost worries him how familiar the feeling of drowning has become just in the past week."

.

"Nineteen years of coasting and then this show hits and suddenly it's a constant barrage of everything he's ignored his entire life."

NOPE.

"Maybe the world is telling him something."

TOO REAL. NOPE. NOPE. LET'S NOT.

Oh man Doyeon. You gotta check yourself before you wreck yourself son. Take care of yourself before you take care of others. Don't use the reliance of others to avoid your problems PLEASE I'M DYING HERE. . Dani I do not appreciate being on the other end of this stick goddamnit. I much prefer writing the timebombs not reading them ;A; This is SO STRESSFUL.

"maybe this was karma, coming back to put him in the eliminated group where he was supposed to be."

Doyeon I will reach through this ing screen and give you the overwhelming amount of hugs that you need and deserve SO HELP ME.

Chapter 52: Omg that picture of jyp as I scrolled down xD Poor guy what did he do to you Dani??

Wow not pulling your punches going into this huh? I feel for Kangjoo and his defeated attitude. Honey! "Almost, but not quite. Because he's Choi Kangjoo and nothing scares him, especially not moody teenagers. " Honey you should be very afraid there's nothing more terrifying than teenagers! Oh man Byunjae, so much pettiness. Jude continues to intrigue me. So much depth packed in such a pleasant little exterior. Hmmm.

Aaah honestly this section warms my heart. The friend group has always been the most wholesome part of the competition, even with the troubles Doyeon faced. Even with the time bomb that's Doyeon they're still somewhat of an oasis of uncomplicated calm. "Seongjun honestly loves the idiots he calls friends. He says as much to Doyeon when they're piling back into the van to head to the second shooting location and gets a grin and a hug from both Doyeon and Hongsol, who overheard the comment. Gosaeng gags at them, and Doyeon retaliates by attacking him with a hug as well." I'm not crying you're crying! It's so sweet and we needed that after the defeated acceptance with a fringe of salt from Kangjoo. As much as I love all the drama, there is nothing quite like a break with friendship and happiness.

Aaah and then there's the edge of drama. Seongjun the one who switched. And of course you can say whatever dumb you want in this group, Doyeon, Sanghyun, and god forbid GOSAENG are all idiots honestly. Whatever dumb thing you'd say Seongjun, I can guarantee you Gosaeng has said dumber things <3 Aaah. Fair weather friends huh? There's so much history packed in those few paragraphs. "They're fun, and they're kind, and they make Seongjun feel safe and happy. He can't ask for more than that." I'M NOT CRYING YOU'RE CRYING. So wholesome ;A;

Chapter 51: Holy this is the best gift I just finished a messy birth of a literature review chapter and I can use this treat. LET'S DO THIS.

So of course my son can be counted on to be dumb and break tension <3 Oh an I forgot how much I love Gosaeng and his stupidity. Come here one of my shameless favourite sons! And Ash. He never really caught my eye during the broadcast but of course a POV would change that. Man the power of POVs. LOOK AT THIS FRIENDSHIP FORMING MY HEART. But alas, elimination ever loom. Uuuugh bittersweet.

Ah. Of course. Jihwan. Aaaah yep that hurt knowing the inplication. When one is joint to the hip, separation does not come gentle. It explains why G was so unhappy for the beginning of the show, but he always did grow on me when he came back with a new outlook. G was one of the biggest comebacks for me honestly. He's fascinating.

Doyeon. Oh Doyeon. I've been dreading this. But also not because we all know how I love having my heart ripped out and crushed to dust, it's my favourite thing! Okay. So. I couldn't even really livecommen for that, I was too busy gripping my heart and reading. That whole section was masterfully written Dani. You really nailed his spiral and his confusion and his denial- . That was good. That was art. That was amazing. It hurts but in a good way.

"She didn't think they'd actually try to argue with her" oh honey. Oh babe. They're heads. "Once the dance is complete she reveals their costumes for the performance and all hell breaks loose all over again." PFFT of course. I feel bad for her she shouldn't have to deal with these s but alas she chose them.

Chapter 50: This isn't a SoC but I'm gonna toss my thoughts at you anyway!

I've always found Doc an interesting character. The way he was forced to do this even though he didn't want to because of his family connections is a very interesting way to go about nepotism. Thus this little look into his history is so fascinating, the way does and doesn't accept what's given to him at the same time. And of course the salty duo of him and Jihyun was always a pleasure!

Next up is the man itself. I love this contrast between bossy control freak Jihyun and most passive man alive Ant, and Jihyun's subsequent confusion that anyone would not /want/ something.

Ah. Of course JYP had seen, just as we did, that Jude is really the only viable candidate for a leader. I'm not surprised by this obvious favouritism (I do write Do or Die after all) and manipulation, and it's not what I see as the biggest revelation for me in this snipped. No, what I found even more interesting was the little look into his friendship with Hongsol (though, let's be real, I'm not exactly an unbiased party there). Just the fact that Jude decides to manage Hongsol instead of being straight with him speaks volumes about their friendship, and not something I'd gathered from the actual show. It speaks of something of an inequality there. An unbalance. And then even that could be dismissed as wanted what's best for your friend, even if that's not a way of going about it that I would personally find acceptable, if it weren't what followed: the almost calculated decision to not have time for Hong's insecurities right now but, as he puts it, handle them later. There's this emphasis on handling, he's handling his friend. One shouldn't be handling their friends. I doubt he has any malicious intent at all, but this does suggest this inequality. If it's an inequality in positions and/or an inequality in how much the friendship means to each of them remains to be seen but I'll be keeping my eye on them.

Chapter 47: Holy crap, these BTS chappies are such nostalgia trips ahhhhh~

I'll be catching up on \/s first before I get drawn into rereading all of this just to prepare for BTS, but holy crap, the fact that we are literally taking quotes of the chapters and unpacking them for cool tidbits is such a squee-worthy concept!!!!! (It's so good to see these boys again too!)

Chapter 44: I ACTUALLY HAVE SOME TIME TODAY SO IMMA STREAM OF CONSCIOUSNESS THIS LIKE I DID THE FIRST EP okay let’s go

The beginning screen flashes always remind me of the Marvel opening for some reason haha, but then I mentally pictured the “Two Days Later” as one of those spongebob transition screens???

You can’t just pair people up and put them into separate rooms full of tension, Dani~ You make it too easy to ship things!!

Aaaaaaaand by ship I don’t mean OTP but rather the package of my heart labelled “Fragile: Handle with Care” then punted off a cliff into the cold seas of “nooo my children don’t be sad!!”

Chapter 44: Oh man that was- I think a crazy ride is definitely the good descriptor here. I can't believe it's over either. 21 has been such a staple in my week, waiting around for the weekend for chapters while the rest of the week was taken up by various forms of adulting or despairing over no wifi. I'll miss it, even though I know that it's going to get replaced with Vs real soon. It's still not exactly the same you know? I love all these s so much now. They're MY heads and I love them. Well, okay, OUR heads.

Oh man for a moment I was scared Jude was going to get eliminated, in which case everything would have definitely fallen apart I mean who else is going to lead this merry band of misfits? Especially since Kyu isn't there either, oh no that hurt me. That one hurt me real bad. He was the big one besides TJ/Koda/Jude that I really wanted to see debut, also knowing his backstory and how much he deserved it. He came so far only to just not achieve his goal. I'm sad for the Sanghyun's too, but I didn't have near the attachment to them that I have for Kyu. Kim Kyuhyun please join Doyeon and Gosaeng in the you-deserve-so-much-more pile. Seongjun and Hongsol are the only ones of the friend group who made it and damned if that doesn't sting.

Chapter 44: That was very, very familiar to that of a real survival show. You captured emotions really well, so thank you for that. Both of my favorites, the Sanghyuns, sadly didn't make it to debut, but they made it very far, and I'm proud of the both of them. Using MADTOWN for their debut is really nice! Underrated groups need much more love than they're given. I was a bit worried when the final members were chosen, not because of talent but because of everything that took place during the show. However, towards the end, those worries calmed down A LOT. I found myself wishing these were real people and a real group I could support. Honestly, it reminded me a lot of No Mercy (that being my favorite survival show, honestly). I loved the JYP feel you gave to it, and I love the personalities of the MC and the interviewer. I also love the group's name being Gold in the end. Overall, I obviously very much enjoyed this as I finished it in mere hours. And now, I'm even more excited for Vs to begin. I'm sure the females will be just as interesting, if not more, than the males of the this story. Expect to see me commenting frequently over there even if my girls meet their downfall. :) - Jelly

Chapter 42: Allllll the way back to Simon Says

girl

This was cruelty in the most beautiful way like… man. I never get used to these eliminations, and even though I know who makes it to episode 9, it’s still rough seeing some of the kids go. (That little bit of foreshadowing with Na Sanghyun looking particularly worried though… I didn’t catch that until the reread, but dang…)

I feel like Soul is just kind of cursed, haha. Not his own fault, per se, but everything bad that’s happened to him so far seems mostly due to circumstance rather than his own qualities. Like Xaris said, this kid is a solid that any group would be lucky to have, but first there’s the fighting team and then there’s going up against St. Jude… kid can’t catch a break, even though he (and Sam Kim) sing like daaaaang boy why are you not everywhere.

These repeat match-ups are hurting me inside, man. I know when I first read that G and Xaris were going against each other I immediately was like oh god oh no please let this happen only once, but hello episode 9. I honestly love both of them so much. G is fantastically mature, and Xaris has shown so much growth. Since I can’t tell a good rap from a saran wrap, I’ll have to base my choice on personality… which is impossible, Dani, waiiii u do this?! Do I want the one who is already frighteningly mature or the one who is slowly maturing? Do I want the one who takes everything in stride and never stopped powering forward or the one who never backs down without a fair amount of fight and learned to keep powering forward after briefly stopping? DO I WANT WELL-DEVELOPED CHILD OR CHILD DEVELOPING WELL? CAN’T I JUST BUILD MY SHRINES IN PEACE?!

oh, also… *moves Xaris’ and Soul’s shrine closer together* At least you will be together in this way, regardless of what happens…
