Episode Two

Twenty-One :: A JYP Survival Show
Strengths

The episode opens on a backstage area, which is in apparent chaos. Several staff members run around, maneuvering smoothly around each other and other obstacles without breaking stride.

However, one large group stands out as they awkwardly stumble into things and get in the way of the other people in the area.

"It's way too crowded back here." Doc complains loudly as he yet again stubs his toes on a box.

Jihyun rolls his eyes exaggeratedly. "Shouldn't you of all people be used to this kind of stuff?"

Doc starts to retort but is interrupted by a stage hand angrily shushing them.

"Five minutes until places. No more talking."

The scene changes to flash through a series of areas: a roller coaster, people eating at an outdoor food court, and finally the entrance sign for Lotte World. The scene changes again to show the Lotte stage where hundreds of people are milling around, chattering amongst themselves. A sign at the entrance point reveals that the one thirty performance will be by a suprise guest from JYP, and there's plenty of speculating in the crowd.

The interviewer from the introduction videos is milling among the onlookers and pulls a few aside for interviews.

"So do you know who you're going to be seeing today?"

One girl nods excitedly. "It's Got7, right? They're the best JYP group, I hope it's them!"

Another girl from a different interview shrugs and looks over at her male companion. "TWICE maybe? But they're doing really well so maybe not. But JYP produces good stuff, I'm looking forward to whoever it is."

"It's actually the JYP trainees. They had seventy two hours to create a song and choreography and this will be their first live performance."

The guy raises an eyebrow. "Three days doesn't seem like much."

His girlfriend agrees, "That is tough. Oh, wait, is this for the competition? The first episode is airing tonight right? Oh my gosh are we going to be in it?"

Just then the stage lights go out, and the crowd starts screaming as music begins.

With the performance complete the boys line up at the front of the stage and bow low to the continued applause from the audience. A few of them throw hearts and winks at the crowd as they file offstage to the lessening applause, and then the stage is empty and the scene returns to the interviewer, now standing at the entrance to the stage area and asking questions to the exiting patrons.

"What did you think of the performance?"

One teenage girl can't stop bouncing as she replies, "That was so amazing! Oh my gosh, they're on a survival show right? I'm totally going to watch and vote! They're all so talented!"

Another teen is equally impressed. "That was super well done, I can't believe none of them have debuted yet. I'll definitely keep an eye on the show."

Some others are less enthusiastic. One young man rolls his eyes as he responds, "Half of them obviously didn't know the dance, it was kind of pathetic to watch really. It's no wonder they're still trainees."

An older woman voices similar concerns, "They all looked so tired. I think it would have been better if they'd practiced more, or gotten some sleep. You could tell they weren't really in sync."

The interviewer nods. "They've been up creating and perfecting this show for three days straight, but they're going back to their dorms now for some food and rest. We hope you'll watch the show and support their hard work."

A note on the screen announces that it's the following day as the scene changes to show the boys in their dorms, getting ready for the morning.

"Oh my god Jihyun hurry up in there, I really gotta p***!" Soul is standing outside the bathroom door, hopping from one foot to another in a familiar dance.

"Well you can wait since someone snored all night and I look terrible without beauty sleep."

"You always look terrible and I room next to you, Ant's snoring wasn't that bad." Soul whines pitifully, knocking on the door insistently.

With a sigh so dramatic and loud it's picked up through the closed door, Jihyun finally swings open the door and brushes past Soul, who dives into the restroom.

Jihyun pulls a face at the closed door. "A thanks would have been nice." He says loudly befor flouncing down the hallway, nodding shortly to G as they pass one another in the hall.

G checks the handle on the bathroom door, sighing when he finds it locked, and then leans against the wall to wait.

KimQ appears from down the hall. His hair is slightly damp and he's dressed for the day, which, up to this point, no one has been.

"Good morning G."

"Hm."

The exchange isn't overtly negative but there's a clear air of distrust between the two men as KimQ passes and continues on his way. G waits another minute in the silent hall, idly messing with his bangs and staring into space. He jumps when the door swings open and nearly clocks him in the face.

Soul smiles awkwardly. "Uh hey, sorry G. You good?"

G nods silently and enters the restroom, closing the door behind himself. Soul shrugs and heads down the hallway.

The camera angle changes and shows Soul entering the kitchen, which is a whirl of activity.

"Are they up yet?"

Ant looks distinctly annoyed by how closely TJ is leaning over him. Danny notices and tugs TJ away from the younger contestant by the arm.

"Ever heard of personal space TJ? The rankings go online at 8, there's still five minutes to go."

TJ pulls his arm free from Danny's grip and sticks his tongue out. "Heard of it yeah. Have you?"

Soul shakes his head with a grin and walks over to where Xaris and Jude are enjoying fresh coffee.

"Enough for one more?"

Jude hands him a mug with a smile. "Help yourself. Excited for the rankings to be released?"

Soul just shrugs. "I suppose."

Jude nods in understanding while Xaris pipes up between sips.

"Well I for one can't wait to claim my number one spot!" He exclaims confidently, earning soft laughs from the two beside him.

Sitting at the counter nearby, Doc rolls his eyes. "You barely had any screen time in the last episode, I doubt you even make top ten." He says dryly, flipping a page in the thick tome sitting open in front of him.

Xaris pulls a face and eyes the book. "What're you reading?"

Doc doesn't look up as another page is turned. "Medical textbook. I don't want to fall behind in my studies just because of this show."

Xaris gives a 'what the heck' look to Jude and Soul, both of whome simply shrug and continue with their coffee.

"They're up!" TJ's voice pierces through the noise of the kitchen, and everyone looks to the teen as he leans over Ant, looking at the web page. Ant seems to have given up and is simply doing want he can to avoid as much of TJ as he can.

"So? Who's first?" Xaris calls out.

TJ frowns. "Na Sanghyun."

"Woo!" Danny cheers and slaps Na Sanghyun on the back happily. The two of them are sitting at the main table with Byunjae, Reito, and Ash, all of whom also congratulate Na Sanghyun. "What about the others? Who's top five?"

TJ sighs as he reads out the next name. "Byunjae is second-"

Danny cheers again and Byunjae's eyes widen in shocked excitement. "Really? I'm second?"

Na Sanghyun hugs his friend. "We're the kings!"

TJ clears his throat loudly. "Hey, boss man says he's coming in at 8:15 so do you want to hear the ranking or not?"

Danny grins at him innocently as TJ continues.

"Jude came in third-"

Jude blinks in surprise, and then smiles warmly as Soul nudges him lightly with a shoulder.

"Seongjun is fourth!" TJ pauses to shoot a grin at Seongjun who's eyes glow with joy at the news as the three men seated around him - Koda, Hongsol, and Do Sanghyun - all quietly congratulate him.

TJ continues, "Ant came in fifth, and," He reads the name and pulls a slight face. "Jihyun is sixth."

Jihyun narrows his eyes. "Hey, what's the look for?"

"No one likes you." Doc replies bluntly. He hasn't looked up from his book except to breifly pat Ant on the back when his ranking was revealed. Now he looks up to engage in a glaring contest with Jihyun.

"Xaris hyung is seventh-"

"Finally! Why am I so low?" Xaris mourns while TJ ignores him an continues.

"Eigth place... ugh. Danny."

"HA I beat you!" Danny cheers. TJ just sticks his tongue out and keeps reading.

"Ash is ninth - Danny I swear to god don't interrupt - and I'm tenth."

"And the rest of you will have to check later. It's time for your next challenge!"

Everyone jumps at JYP's sudden appearance, having all been too involved listening to the rankings to hear the front door open.

The CEO doesn't even wait to check if everyone is listening as he launches into the next task. "You'll be in four groups just like last time. You'll then have two days to prepare a performance showing off your personal skills. Any questions?"

TJ raises his hand. "Can we choose our own groups?" As he speaks his eyes flit around the room.

JYP shakes his head. "In time yes, but today you're being divivded based specifically on your talets: rapping, dancing, and singing. For the singers, as there are so many of you, you'll be divided into two groups of five. But first off the rappers. Xaris, Danny, Reito, and G, your four are the rap group."

Ant's brow furrows as he watches the four shuffle towards each other, clearly upset but not saying anything.

Do Sanghyun looks over at the composer, clearly noticing his expression, and the quiet man reaches out comfortingly to the other.

JYP is completely oblivious to the exchange as he rattles off the dance group. "Seongjun, Jihyun, Ash, Koda, Collin, and KimQ."

The sox of them are already sitting close to each other so they don't bother moving as JYP moves on to the vocalists.

"Alright, so there are a lot of you so we decided to split you down the middle."

Ant is still frowning at the table, but now Jude has his brow furrowed as he scans the room carefully.

"Group one will be Ant, TJ, Hongsol, Do Sanghyun, and Kangjoo. Group Two is Na Sanghyun, Byunjae, Doc, Soul, and Noheul." JYP claps his hands and then waves them in the air. "And those are the groups! You have fourty eight hours to put together your performances and then you'll be performing them live at a special JYP venue we've planned!"

The boys murmur to each other for a moment before JYP reclaims attention with a grand sweep of his hands. "One last thing before I go - the team with the most votes was Team Four. So Na Sanghyun, TJ, Doc, Reito, Xaris, Byunjae, and Jihyun, as a reward for having been voted the best of the four groups, all seven of you are safe from elimination this round."

Chaos erupts, but JYP restores order with a single, loud reminder. "Don't forget your two days have already started! I'd get on those performances if you don't want to be eliminated. Dismissed!'

While the groups quickly gather and then disperse to plan and practice, one contestant goes after the retreating CEO, his brow furrowed.

"Um, sir?"

JYP pauses and waits for Jude to catch up. "Excellent, you caught up quickly."

Jude bites his lip and takes in a small breath. "Sir you didn't put me in a group. What am I supposed to do for the next two days?"

JYP smiles. "You have a special task Jude. Given your skills, time in the industry, and ranking on the last poll we thought it might be prudent for you to not waste your time and talent in a group setting. Walk with me."

In the kitchen, only vocal group one remains, sitting around the kitchen table.

Hongsol is looking towards the hallway frowning. "Did you guys notice Jude didn't get a group?" He asks worriedly.

TJ pats his shoulder lightly. "Don't over think it Hongsol, I'm sure he'll be fine! Let's focus on making a great performance, alright? I don't want you gusy getting eliminated." His eyes are eager, and just a little bit worried as he watches his friend.

Hongsol looks a moment longer at the hallway before nodding and looking back at the group. "Okay, you're right. Do we have any ideas?" He looks around the table curiously, head tilted.

Kangjoo gets right to business. The moment the question is asked he pulls out a notebook and places it on the table.

"I say we do something original. It will catch people's attention, I'm sure the other group will be doing a cover. That's the go-to for singers." He taps the song insistently. "I fixed this one last night, I think it'll go over well, and I think even we can pull it off."

TJ bristles. "What's that supposed to mean?"

Kangjoo sighs, "I mean we have the weaker overall vocals between the two groups. Noheul, Jude, and Soul have the best vocals of the contestants, that's why they get top rank during evaluations every month. I'm including myself you know. But I know we can stand out and beat them for the top rank anyway, and that's where this," He points to the notebook, "Comes in."

TJ nods slowly, clearly rolling the little speech around in his head. "Okay fine. You do have a point."

Do Sanghyun clears his throat awkwardly right then and the other four look at him. He seems to brace himself before speaking.

"There might be another way we can stand out from the other teams." He looks over at Ant and smiles. "We have a secret weapon."

The dancers make a beeline for the biggest practice room when they reach the main building.

Thankfully it's empty, and the group spreads out and starts stretching. Within moments of entering the group all start talking at once.

"We should do hip-hop dancing! That's in right now, right?" Koda asks Seongjun excitedly, who laughs and shrugs.

Collin has ideas as well. "We should try to do something like BTS sunbaes. Everyone knows they're awesome dancers so if we can do their stuff it'll show that we're awesome dancers."

Ahs shrugs. "But doesn't a lot of their stuff have flips in it?"

"I can do flips!" Collin argues.

KimQ watches quietly for a moment before softly clearing his throat. The boys near him quiet down and look over at him, and slowly the rest of the noise fades out as the others realize he wants their attention.

"Maybe there's a way to combine everything? If we want to show our individual skills, maybe do a group dance with individual dance sections so we can show off." He smiles softly as the others process his suggestion.

"Hey, that's a great idea! I like that idea, I'm doing hip-hop for my part!" Koda, as always, is the first and loudest to respond, bouncing up off the floor in his excitement.

Seongjun laughs and then turns to everyone else as they begin discussing music to use now that the basic idea is set.

"We'll need something versatile." Ash is staring at his phone as he speaks. Collin looks over his shoulder and groans.

"Pokemon Go? Seriously Ash, we've got things to do."

"There is a level 1092 Vaporeon in here dude, that's stronger than my current one. And I'm paying attention aren't I?"

The other four ignore the two as they bicker.

"Well I think we should definitely use music with minimal lyrics and probably a heavy base. We want to show off our dancing, so we want people to focus on us." Jihyun decides, already flipping through his music library. "I have some songs in my freestyle playlist that should work."

Seongjun just sighs and elbows Koda as the other dancer starts to retort. "Let it go Koda, you can pick the music next time."

Koda is still pouting though, so KimQ speaks up thoughtfully. "Koda, do you want to have a dance battle? I've never really done one before but they look like fun."

Koda immediately perks up and bounces over to KimQ chattering excitedly about how awesome dance battles are. Seongjun just laughs and watches them until Jihyun waves his phone triumphantly.

"Got it! Here, Seongjun you're good with music stuff right? That's why you were a composer. So listen to these and help choose one, okay?"

Seongjun blinks, blindsided. "Oh, sure hyung, I can do that." He accepts one of the earbuds and leans closer to Jihyun so it stays in as they start the music.

In the practice room next door, the rappers are sitting in a squre silently.

"So. How do we want do this?" Xaris finally breaks the silence, looking at the other three cautiously.

Reito stares back with a furrowed brow, Danny can only shrug, and G isn't even looking at him.

Xaris waits another moment before he seems to make a decision. He stands up and clears his throat, pointedly looking over at G, who finally looks up, impassive.

"Since only one of us is a composer, it doesn't make sense to try and write a new song, so I propose we cover another group or soloist's song so we can focus on creating as close to perfect of a performance as we can. Sound good?"

Reito nods slowly, but is clearly still lost. G doesn't react beyond shrugging.

Danny however seems quite gungho. "Sounds good to me! And actually, I already know most of YGGR from Illionaire Records, we could do that one!"

For the first time G speaks. "I'd rather not. It's rapped by two high profile idol rappers, we'd just be compared to them. I say we go with an underground song, that was viewers likely won't be as familiar with the original sound as much so we can put our own spin on it without judgement."

Xaris starts to respond, but Danny beats him to it. "But we need the song to be relatively known, people like it when they can rap along, it creates a bond. Trust me, I know people."

G scoffs. "I know people too. Better than you I'm sure. Didn't half your friends start hanging out with TJ days after he arrived, completely ditching you? Not exactly a stunning rapport for your alledged people skills."

"Guys! Maybe there's a compromise here, maybe an underground rapper who collaborated with more popular ones?" Xaris intervenes before Danny can retort.

G shrugs. "If you can find one sure."

Danny frowns. "Yeah sure. Same here."

Xaris looks between his fuming groupmates to Reito, who still looks completely lost.

He sighs and walks over to the youngest competitor. "Hey, wanna go surf Youtube for rap songs?"

That he seems to understand, as his nod is much more eager. "Sure! I know good songs." Reito tugs Xaris out of the room, leaving Danny and G alone with their silence.

Out in the hallway, the two pass by one of the vocal rooms, where there seems to be a shouting match going on. Xaris hurries past with Reito and the scene fades into the room.

Doc and Noheul are facing off inside the room. The other three members of their group are against the wall furthest from the two, watching them as one might watch a wild carnivore that's a little too close to a campsite.

"Guys why don't we just-" Soul sound tired, as if he's been trying for a while now to diffuse the situation.

Doc and Noheul both glare at him and he sighs and steps back again, sharing a look with Byunjae and Na Sanghyun, the former of whom is gripping both their hands like his life depends on it.

"Why can't you just admit that my suggestion is perfect. It will show off all our abilities and it will be relatively simple to put together to we can actually get some food and rest tonight before the performance."

Doc's eyes somehow narrow even further. "It isn't about that you pig-headed arrogant brat! You need to admit that this is a team effort and that means actually talking to the team before making any decisions that affect all of us."

Noheul rolls his eyes in exasperation. "But I'm right."

"UGH you're INSUFFERABLE!"

Na Sanghyun finaly taps Soul on the shoulder. He turns to the younger contestant, who looks distinctly nervous.

"Why don't we go to a different room and start practicing? I mean, I think it's a fine song, and we're wasting time..."

Soul nods. "You know what, that's a good idea Sanghyun. Come on Byunjae, let's leave these two to their quarrelling and get things set up. I actually have an idea for the set..."

The three exit still chatting. Doc glances over when the door closes and sighs.

"Look, I'll apologize if you admit you were too bossy. Sanghyun is right, we're wasting time if we want to do well."

Noheul looks like he's about to argue further, but then sighs and nods, holding out a hand. "Fine. Truce."

Doc shakes the proferred hand, but both are still glaring as they follow their groupmates.

In the hallway they pass by Reito and Xaris. Reito awkwardly attempts a bow but both parties are moving too quickly and he ends up just stumbling a bit.

Xaris steadies him easily, with a small grin. "Careful. Just walk."

Reito nods awkwardly and the two enter the practice room to find Danny and G sitting on opposite ends on their phones. When the door opens they both glance up, and Danny starts talking almost immediately.

"We came to a compromise. Two songs, he'll do one I'll do the other. That way we can both do what we want and not have to deal with each other for the rest of the time."

Xaris stares at them for a long moment, starts to say something, and then pauses to check the wall clock.

"You know what, fine. G, you work on your song choice with Reito, and you're using the song we found, he's realy excited about it. Danny you and me will work on YGGR like you wanted. We'll reconvene and switch partners tomorrow at noon, okay?"

The two nod. G walks over to Reito and speaks to him quietly. Reito smiles and nods. The young Japanese boy gives Xaris a little wave before trotting after G.

Xaris turns to Danny, who's watching Reito leaving with something akin to a pout.

"He's not going to steal your friend Danny, now let's get to work."

The scene opens on one not dissimilar to the first shot in the episode. Several staff members bustle around a backstage area, but this one indoors. The scene cuts between shots of the contestants getting makeup done, checking their hair, and running dance steps nervously.

Koda and Seongjun are stretching when Hongsol walks over to them. Seongjun sees him first and smiles brightly.

"Hey hyung, you guys ready for your performance?"

Hongosl returns the smiles with one of his own. "As ready as we will be, which I think is pretty good honestly. How are you guys? Think you're ready?"

Koda puffs up as he replies. "We're going to wipe the floor with you!"

Hongsol laughs. "I'm sure you will Gogo. Good luck to both of you."

Koda deflates immediately. "Hong-gie!" He whines pitifully. "Why would you call me that? We aren't friends anymore!"

Hongsol just chuckles again before looking back to Seongjun. "Have you two seen Jude anywhere recently? He texed that he's here but I can't find him."

"Ditching us for your boyfriend, I see how it is hyung." Seongjun teases.

Hongsol turns bright red. "That's not... I don't... Seongjun! Don't tease like that! Just have you see him or not?"

Seongjun just laughs mercilessly. "Look Gosaeng, look how flushed he is!"

"Stop it!"

Seongjung finally takes pity on the bright red pile of embarrasment that Hongsol has become. "Okay okay I'll stop. It's cute that you worry about him, that's all. I haven't seen him though, I'm sorry."

Hongsol pouts, "You put me through all that and you weren't even helpful. Shame on you Seongjun."

Seongjun can't resist one last jab as Hongsol leaves. "Sorry mom, I'll reflect on my behavior in my room!"

Koda tilts his head and frowns. "How is he your mom? Wouldn't he be a dad? And isn't he too young to have a kid your age?"

Seongjun rolls his eyes and laughs, gently steering Koda back towards one of the waiting areas designated for the groups. "It's a good thing you're pretty hyung, that's all I can say."

Down the hall, Danny and Reito are chatting with Na Sanghyun and Byunjae.

"It's a complete nightmare working with those two. JYP-hyungnim knows they don't get along, why would he put them in a group together?" Sanghyun is griping while Byunjae nods his head.

Danny shrugs. "It's a survival show, it's supposed to be dramatic."

"Chairs were nearly thrown hyung. I don't think that kind of drama is the good kind." Sanghyun sighs.

Byunjae pats him comfortingly on the back, as he can't reach any higher. Danny can't help but grin at the exchange.

"Well, you definitely trump my complaints. But I'm glad we're allowed to hang out before the show starts, I haven't seen you guys in forever! Or Ash, but he's Ash. He'll show up eventually."

Reito stands quietly next to Danny, smiling softly. He looks genuinely happy despite his silence, and is even lightly holding hands with Byunjae, who isn't complaining as he idly plays with the younger teen's fingers.

"Well, at least you'll be done with the group after the performance today, right? And... you do have a performance?"

Byunjae finally speaks up. "We do. It's... not as good as it could have been, I think, but it's still good. I mean, we have really good singers in our group, even if some of them don't really get along."

"Or were duped for lines because their rank was too low." Sanghyun adds, rolling his eyes. "That one was Noheul. I have to say though, everything he says makes perfect sense, it's just..."

"How he says it." Byunjae supplies.

Sanghyun nods. "Exactly."

Just then Hongsol walks up. Reito, Byunjae, and Sanghyun all smile at the newcomer, and Danny offers a handshake in greeting.

"Hey hyung, fancy running into you here." He jokes.

Hongsol smiles. "Hey guys, you ready to perform?"

The four share similar looks that tell Hongsol all he needs to know.

"Well, I'm sure they're better than you think they are! Good luck anyway, I know you'll all do great!"

His support does seem to slightly cheer up the four in front of him, and he moves on to the main point of his approaching them.

"Have you guys seen Jude around lately?"

The four shake their heads, and with a quick 'thanks' Hongsol heads further into the backstage.

The next people he runs into are Soul and Xaris. The two greet him warmly as he approaches.

"Hey guys! Ready for the performances today?"

Soul pulls a face and Xaris laughs. "He was just telling me how his lines got cut."

Soul sighs. "It was for the greater good of getting Doc and Noheul to quit bickering, but still. If I'm eliminated because I don't get to show off how awesome I am I blame those two."

Hongsol gives him a sympathetic look. "Well, between us I heard that eliminations might not be permanent? If something does happen maybe you'll get a second chance to impress the voters!"

Now Soul is grinning wrily along with Xaris. "I'd ask how you know that, but with your ten thousand connections it's easier to let it go. Anyway, good luck in your own performance today, you think you guys are ready?"

Hongsol shrugs. "We've done our best, and that's what matters right? But actually, while you're here, have either of you seen Jude?"

The two both shrug and then the three bid each other farewell as Hongsol continues on his quest.

However, the next person he runs into tells him he needs to get back to his waiting room, so he reluctantly heads back the way he came, only to run straight into the very person he'd been looking for.

"Hyung! Hey, I've been looking for you!"

Jude laughs. "So I've heard. What's up Hong?"

Hongsol shrugs lightly. "I've just been worried. You weren't put into a group and then I haven't seen you for the past two days. I wanted to make sure everything was alright."

Jude pats the other lightly on the shoulder. "I'm fine Hongsol. I had a different assignment. I won't be getting immunity this round, but I promise nothing bad is happening. Now I'm on in about five minutes and you should be getting to your waiting room I believe."

Hongsol nods and gives a quick bow, during which Jude teasingly messes up his hair. The two laugh and part ways, Hongsol clearly more relaxed than before.

Jude makes his way towards the main stage, where he's handed a microphone by JYP himself.

"Are you ready?"

Jude nods firmly, and then the interviewer walks over to him. Jude bows to him in greeting and he nods back politely before signaling to the lightboard operators to begin the show.

As the usual announcements regarding filming play through the theatre, Jude heads to centerstage. He takes a bracing breath, and then the camera cuts to the back of the theatre facing the stage as the curatains draw open, and a piano begins to play.

As the backup dancers disperse and the applause dies down, Jude takes another bow before waving cheerfully to the crowd. He steps forward as the curtains pull closed behind him. He raises the microphone again when it's quiet enough to be heard.

"Hello! Hello everyone and thank you so much for coming to this very special event! My name is Jude and I'll be your host for this evening! Tonight we have four performances for you, created by the performers themselves, and they've worked very hard to make them as amazing as they can so make sure to give them lots of love!"

More cheers resound around the auditorious and the camera pans to show the fans waving signs for their favorite contestants.

Jude smiles. "Alright then, I won't take up your time any longer, I know you guys want to see the performances! First up we have a lovely rendition of Roy Kim's Bom Bom Bom by the talented Na Sanghyun, Noheul, Doc, Byunjae, and Soul!"

He steps to the side as the curtain swings open again to reveal a whole new set, with blooming flowers framing the background and scattered around the feet of five young men, all smiling as they await their music cue.

The boys stand still as the curtain slowly closes in time to the dwindling applause, and Jude again takes center stage, smiling bright enough to rival the spotlights on him.

"That was a great start to what's going to be a great night I'm sure. What did you guys thinks?" He holds the mic out to the audience and is met with screams from the fans. Jude smiles suavely directly towards the cameras as he pulls the mic back and waits for the sound to lessen before speaking again.

"Now remember, if you want to help these trainees reach their goal to become idols, be sure to drop by the Twenty-One official site and send in your votes! Every one matters, so if there's someone you really want to see again, make sure to help them out! Now, for our next performance we have the rappers of Twenty-One, Xaris, Reito, G, and Danny! These four young men have put together not one but two songs to perform! So let's sit back and enjoy, shall we?"

He steps back again with the curtain. The trees are gone, replaced by a simple electronic display. The stage goes dark, leaving only the screen lighting up the auditorium for a moment.

Then a spotlight comes on.

(G:Tattoos       Reito:All White       Danny:Red Jacket       Xaris:All Black)

Jude applauds with the audience as the curtains begin to close again and the rappers head backstage. For a moment the screen reads "oh no, this loser again" and the audience laughs.

Jude pretends to look around for the source of laughter, but he joins in a moment later. "Alright alright, tech has it out for me for the complicated sounds and lights from my performances." He jokes lightly. "But this next group is taking it a step up: they're using a fog machine!"

Several people in the front row shout their approval and Jude grins at them.

"Sounds like they have fans already! Our next group is taking it up another notch with a completely original song! This is Kangjoo, TJ, Do Sanghyun, Ant, and Hongsol with the song Find Me."

The lights dim to near darkness, and the stage become steeped in fog as Jude returns to his position on the side of the stage. When the curtain rises nothing can be seen, until several golden backlights turn on at once, outlining the five men sitting on chairs arranged around the otherwise empty stage.

(Hongsol:Gold Necklace,Tank Top       TJ:Long Sleeved Shirt       Do Sanghyun:Jacket Vest       Kangjoo:High Notes       Ant:Rapping)

Jude waves smoke out of his face as the curtains swing shut against the applauding fans. He manages a grin, though he coughs a moment later.

He recovers after a moment and brings the mic back up. "Definitely impressive to make a whole new song in just two days. And again, if any of these boys are impressing you drop by our website and leave a vote! Now, we only have one more performance tonight." He waits for the groans from the audience. "I know I know, it seems so short. But believe it or not we've been here for almost an hour! Time does fly when there's good music around."

Obligatory groans at the terrible joke resound around the theatre and Jude laughs. "Don't worry you're almost free of me. This last performance is by our dancers Ash, Koda, Seongjun, Jihyun, KimQ, and Collin. Enjoy!"

He exits the stage completely this time as the curtains open. Then the lights start flashing different colors as the dancers all run onstage and energetically bounce into formation.

(Koda:Black and Red Jacket      Collin:Red Tank      Jihyun:Red Sleeves      Seongjun:Black Jacket      KimQ:Black Tank      Ash:Sweater)

As the performance ends all the contestants run out onto the stage and wave excitedly to the screaming fans.

Jude steps to the front and has to yell his final lines through his microphone to even hope he might be heard. "Thank you everyone for coming out to support us tonight! We hope you enjoyed yourself here and that you'll continue to support us on our journey! Thank you and goodnight!"

And with those final words the curtains close for the last time.

( AUTHOR'S NOTE ) And here's episode two! I don't know if they'll all be this close together, but I'll definitely try! Chapter 53: Oh boy here we go again. Everyone strap on your safety belts: feelings are coming.

Oooh Byunjae. Of course he's calculating his way into an easy, we knew he'd do that. And I suppose we'll see more of him in the next bts too. You know how I feel about him and it's not altogether positive, but I suppose that in and of itself is a win for you. As long as I feel something you did your job well, and I certainly feel something for this pipsquick. "There is one person who has escaped rightful elimination." I knew this was coming but also off Byungjae DO NOT TOUCH MY DOYEON. Thankfully I also know how this happens.

SPEAK OF THE ANGEL. Oh honey. "This is fine" is the thing we tell ourselves when we desperately need that to be true.

"It almost worries him how familiar the feeling of drowning has become just in the past week."

.

"Nineteen years of coasting and then this show hits and suddenly it's a constant barrage of everything he's ignored his entire life."

NOPE.

"Maybe the world is telling him something."

TOO REAL. NOPE. NOPE. LET'S NOT.

Oh man Doyeon. You gotta check yourself before you wreck yourself son. Take care of yourself before you take care of others. Don't use the reliance of others to avoid your problems PLEASE I'M DYING HERE. . Dani I do not appreciate being on the other end of this stick goddamnit. I much prefer writing the timebombs not reading them ;A; This is SO STRESSFUL.

"maybe this was karma, coming back to put him in the eliminated group where he was supposed to be."

Doyeon I will reach through this ing screen and give you the overwhelming amount of hugs that you need and deserve SO HELP ME.

Chapter 52: Omg that picture of jyp as I scrolled down xD Poor guy what did he do to you Dani??

Wow not pulling your punches going into this huh? I feel for Kangjoo and his defeated attitude. Honey! "Almost, but not quite. Because he's Choi Kangjoo and nothing scares him, especially not moody teenagers. " Honey you should be very afraid there's nothing more terrifying than teenagers! Oh man Byunjae, so much pettiness. Jude continues to intrigue me. So much depth packed in such a pleasant little exterior. Hmmm.

Aaah honestly this section warms my heart. The friend group has always been the most wholesome part of the competition, even with the troubles Doyeon faced. Even with the time bomb that's Doyeon they're still somewhat of an oasis of uncomplicated calm. "Seongjun honestly loves the idiots he calls friends. He says as much to Doyeon when they're piling back into the van to head to the second shooting location and gets a grin and a hug from both Doyeon and Hongsol, who overheard the comment. Gosaeng gags at them, and Doyeon retaliates by attacking him with a hug as well." I'm not crying you're crying! It's so sweet and we needed that after the defeated acceptance with a fringe of salt from Kangjoo. As much as I love all the drama, there is nothing quite like a break with friendship and happiness.

Aaah and then there's the edge of drama. Seongjun the one who switched. And of course you can say whatever dumb you want in this group, Doyeon, Sanghyun, and god forbid GOSAENG are all idiots honestly. Whatever dumb thing you'd say Seongjun, I can guarantee you Gosaeng has said dumber things <3 Aaah. Fair weather friends huh? There's so much history packed in those few paragraphs. "They're fun, and they're kind, and they make Seongjun feel safe and happy. He can't ask for more than that." I'M NOT CRYING YOU'RE CRYING. So wholesome ;A;

Chapter 51: Holy this is the best gift I just finished a messy birth of a literature review chapter and I can use this treat. LET'S DO THIS.

So of course my son can be counted on to be dumb and break tension <3 Oh an I forgot how much I love Gosaeng and his stupidity. Come here one of my shameless favourite sons! And Ash. He never really caught my eye during the broadcast but of course a POV would change that. Man the power of POVs. LOOK AT THIS FRIENDSHIP FORMING MY HEART. But alas, elimination ever loom. Uuuugh bittersweet.

Ah. Of course. Jihwan. Aaaah yep that hurt knowing the inplication. When one is joint to the hip, separation does not come gentle. It explains why G was so unhappy for the beginning of the show, but he always did grow on me when he came back with a new outlook. G was one of the biggest comebacks for me honestly. He's fascinating.

Doyeon. Oh Doyeon. I've been dreading this. But also not because we all know how I love having my heart ripped out and crushed to dust, it's my favourite thing! Okay. So. I couldn't even really livecommen for that, I was too busy gripping my heart and reading. That whole section was masterfully written Dani. You really nailed his spiral and his confusion and his denial- . That was good. That was art. That was amazing. It hurts but in a good way.

"She didn't think they'd actually try to argue with her" oh honey. Oh babe. They're heads. "Once the dance is complete she reveals their costumes for the performance and all hell breaks loose all over again." PFFT of course. I feel bad for her she shouldn't have to deal with these s but alas she chose them.

Chapter 50: This isn't a SoC but I'm gonna toss my thoughts at you anyway!

I've always found Doc an interesting character. The way he was forced to do this even though he didn't want to because of his family connections is a very interesting way to go about nepotism. Thus this little look into his history is so fascinating, the way does and doesn't accept what's given to him at the same time. And of course the salty duo of him and Jihyun was always a pleasure!

Next up is the man itself. I love this contrast between bossy control freak Jihyun and most passive man alive Ant, and Jihyun's subsequent confusion that anyone would not /want/ something.

Ah. Of course JYP had seen, just as we did, that Jude is really the only viable candidate for a leader. I'm not surprised by this obvious favouritism (I do write Do or Die after all) and manipulation, and it's not what I see as the biggest revelation for me in this snipped. No, what I found even more interesting was the little look into his friendship with Hongsol (though, let's be real, I'm not exactly an unbiased party there). Just the fact that Jude decides to manage Hongsol instead of being straight with him speaks volumes about their friendship, and not something I'd gathered from the actual show. It speaks of something of an inequality there. An unbalance. And then even that could be dismissed as wanted what's best for your friend, even if that's not a way of going about it that I would personally find acceptable, if it weren't what followed: the almost calculated decision to not have time for Hong's insecurities right now but, as he puts it, handle them later. There's this emphasis on handling, he's handling his friend. One shouldn't be handling their friends. I doubt he has any malicious intent at all, but this does suggest this inequality. If it's an inequality in positions and/or an inequality in how much the friendship means to each of them remains to be seen but I'll be keeping my eye on them.

Chapter 47: Holy crap, these BTS chappies are such nostalgia trips ahhhhh~

I'll be catching up on \/s first before I get drawn into rereading all of this just to prepare for BTS, but holy crap, the fact that we are literally taking quotes of the chapters and unpacking them for cool tidbits is such a squee-worthy concept!!!!! (It's so good to see these boys again too!)

Chapter 44: I ACTUALLY HAVE SOME TIME TODAY SO IMMA STREAM OF CONSCIOUSNESS THIS LIKE I DID THE FIRST EP okay let’s go

The beginning screen flashes always remind me of the Marvel opening for some reason haha, but then I mentally pictured the “Two Days Later” as one of those spongebob transition screens???

You can’t just pair people up and put them into separate rooms full of tension, Dani~ You make it too easy to ship things!!

Aaaaaaaand by ship I don’t mean OTP but rather the package of my heart labelled “Fragile: Handle with Care” then punted off a cliff into the cold seas of “nooo my children don’t be sad!!”

Chapter 44: Oh man that was- I think a crazy ride is definitely the good descriptor here. I can't believe it's over either. 21 has been such a staple in my week, waiting around for the weekend for chapters while the rest of the week was taken up by various forms of adulting or despairing over no wifi. I'll miss it, even though I know that it's going to get replaced with Vs real soon. It's still not exactly the same you know? I love all these s so much now. They're MY heads and I love them. Well, okay, OUR heads.

Oh man for a moment I was scared Jude was going to get eliminated, in which case everything would have definitely fallen apart I mean who else is going to lead this merry band of misfits? Especially since Kyu isn't there either, oh no that hurt me. That one hurt me real bad. He was the big one besides TJ/Koda/Jude that I really wanted to see debut, also knowing his backstory and how much he deserved it. He came so far only to just not achieve his goal. I'm sad for the Sanghyun's too, but I didn't have near the attachment to them that I have for Kyu. Kim Kyuhyun please join Doyeon and Gosaeng in the you-deserve-so-much-more pile. Seongjun and Hongsol are the only ones of the friend group who made it and damned if that doesn't sting.

Chapter 44: That was very, very familiar to that of a real survival show. You captured emotions really well, so thank you for that. Both of my favorites, the Sanghyuns, sadly didn't make it to debut, but they made it very far, and I'm proud of the both of them. Using MADTOWN for their debut is really nice! Underrated groups need much more love than they're given. I was a bit worried when the final members were chosen, not because of talent but because of everything that took place during the show. However, towards the end, those worries calmed down A LOT. I found myself wishing these were real people and a real group I could support. Honestly, it reminded me a lot of No Mercy (that being my favorite survival show, honestly). I loved the JYP feel you gave to it, and I love the personalities of the MC and the interviewer. I also love the group's name being Gold in the end. Overall, I obviously very much enjoyed this as I finished it in mere hours. And now, I'm even more excited for Vs to begin. I'm sure the females will be just as interesting, if not more, than the males of the this story. Expect to see me commenting frequently over there even if my girls meet their downfall. :) - Jelly

Chapter 42: Allllll the way back to Simon Says

girl

This was cruelty in the most beautiful way like… man. I never get used to these eliminations, and even though I know who makes it to episode 9, it’s still rough seeing some of the kids go. (That little bit of foreshadowing with Na Sanghyun looking particularly worried though… I didn’t catch that until the reread, but dang…)

I feel like Soul is just kind of cursed, haha. Not his own fault, per se, but everything bad that’s happened to him so far seems mostly due to circumstance rather than his own qualities. Like Xaris said, this kid is a solid that any group would be lucky to have, but first there’s the fighting team and then there’s going up against St. Jude… kid can’t catch a break, even though he (and Sam Kim) sing like daaaaang boy why are you not everywhere.

These repeat match-ups are hurting me inside, man. I know when I first read that G and Xaris were going against each other I immediately was like oh god oh no please let this happen only once, but hello episode 9. I honestly love both of them so much. G is fantastically mature, and Xaris has shown so much growth. Since I can’t tell a good rap from a saran wrap, I’ll have to base my choice on personality… which is impossible, Dani, waiiii u do this?! Do I want the one who is already frighteningly mature or the one who is slowly maturing? Do I want the one who takes everything in stride and never stopped powering forward or the one who never backs down without a fair amount of fight and learned to keep powering forward after briefly stopping? DO I WANT WELL-DEVELOPED CHILD OR CHILD DEVELOPING WELL? CAN’T I JUST BUILD MY SHRINES IN PEACE?!

oh, also… *moves Xaris’ and Soul’s shrine closer together* At least you will be together in this way, regardless of what happens…
