Episode Eight

Twenty-One :: A JYP Survival Show
D-day

The small practice room from Byunjae and TJ's leader duel is now occupied by eight nervous young men.

Ash is sitting near G and the two occasionally throw words to each other, though it's not really a conversation. Reito is in another corner talking in low voices to Byunjae, who's mostly responding non-verbally  and looks exhausted. The other four are keeping to themselves for the most part, silent and restless.

After a minute the door opens and Doc comes in, closely followed by JYP, who's cheer seems rather forced for once.

"Alright, welcome to the final rescue round. You'll be divided into groups of three in a moment, but first your challenge." He pauses to be sure everyone is listening, a needless gesture as every trainee is fully focused on every word he says.

"Each group will be putting together a performance showcasing their skills, which will be judged by a panel of teachers in twenty four hours, while everyone else is at the JYPNation concert. Now, for the groups I'll be assigning leaders, who will then choose their two groupmates." He thinks for a moment, and then seems to come to a decision as he nods to himself. "We'll just have the three oldest choose. Soul, Noheul, Ash. You three are the leaders. Soul as the person who was voted out first you may have first pick."

Soul looks throughtfully at the other six trainees before deciding. "Byunjae and Doc. We all have different vocal types but I think we'll be able to create something pretty solid in a day."

JYP nods distractedly as he checks something on his phone. "Alright Noheul ranked higher than Ash when you were eliminated so you may choose next."

Noheul barely has to think before making his choices. "Reito and Jihyun." He doesn't explain his reasons and he isn't asked to.

Ash looks at the two remaining trainees. "I guess it's us then." He shuffles his feet a bit uncomfortably but offers a small smile to G and Kangjoo, who just as awkwadly smile back.

JYP seems satisfied with the teams and begins to head out when Kangjoo raises his hand.

"Sir how exactly is this round going to work? I mean in terms of getting back in."

JYP doesn't turn around as he replies. "There will be three people rescued from this. Look at the groups. How do you think it's going to work?" And with that he finally leaves the groups alone in the room.

Noheul speaks almost immediately. "Alright I'm thinking of some dance heavy stuff for my group and this is the largest remaining practice room since the contestants are using the main one and the girls are using the secondary one today, so if no one has any objections we'll take this room." Though he phrases it like an offer, he tone clearly shows he expects to get the room.

Ash awkwardly shrugs in agreement and Soul looks like he's ready to reluctantly comply when Doc interrupts.

"And what if we want this room? Why do you think you're the only group that's going to dance? Ash is a great dancer, what if he wants to dance?"

"I said it was alright Doc..."

"Yeah well I don't like that he thinks he can just boss everyone else around." The singer replies huffily. Soul lightly places a hand on his groupmate's shoulder.

"Breath Jaejin. I've got an idea and it doesn't require this room, alright? Let Noheul do his thing, you don't have to deal with him."

Noheul makes a slight face at Soul's choice of words, but still manages to look a bit smug as Doc leaves the room with the rest of his group.

Ash quickly vacates his team as well, leaving Noheul, Jihyun, and Reito alone in the practice room.

"Okay, I've analyzed our strengths and weaknesses and I've decided on the ideal song for us to perform." Noheul quickly begins talking as soon as they're alone, but Jihyun is quick to interrupt.

"Hold on buddy didn't you hear JYP? Three people are getting back in, and there are three people on each team. That means whichever team wins this challenge is getting back into the competition, and I'm not handing full control of my fate over to anyone, nonetheless you of all people."

Noheul's jaw tightens. "Look Jihyun I'm a tested genius-"

"And that gives you the right to lord over everyone else? I don't give a how smart you are hyung, this is a team effort and that means the whole team is going to be involved whether your entitled likes it or not."

"I'm entitled? Have you ever listened to yourself talk? You're the walking personification of entitled, don't even start with me-"

As the two continue to argue in ever louder voices, Reito watches the two of them go back an forth like he's watching a tennis match. His eyes grow darker with each passing second, and his fists clench, until finally, after almost a minute, he snaps.

"SHUT UP!"

Both of the arguers promptly fall silent and stare in shock at their youngest groupmate, who's eyes are blazing with fury.

"Not get anything done if fight. Shut up and do work." He growls, and the two older men are nodding before he's finished talking.

"Alright fine, we'll go with your song but I'm choreographing. I have some friends from back in SM who I'm sure would be happy to help us out as well."

Noheul nods stiffly. "Fine, sounds good."

Reito looks pleased, going one eighty from his previous mood in a matter of seconds.

Jihyun eyes him uncomfortably for a moment. "Never knew he had a temper like that. No wonder he's friends with Byunjae."

The scene segues then to Soul's group, where Byunjae is, in fact, complaining loudly.

"Why do you get the most lines? This is ridiculous I sing plenty well. I get barely giving Doc anything he doens't even want to be here but I do! I can't believe you're trying to cheat me out of a fair chance!"

"Says the guy who challenged TJ to a duel specifically becasue he thought there was no way he could lose to someone less talented. And oh, you ended up losing anyway!" Doc's voice is dripping with sarcasm. He's sitting on the floor and playing on his phone while Soul and Byunjae face off in the center of the new practice room they're in.

Several other people are in the room as well, young women who look either intrigued by or extremely uncomfortable with the argument.

"Guys is it that big of a deal? I mean from the sound of it as long as your group does well all three of you will be back in the competition anyway." One of the girls speaks up. As the camera pans to her it's revealed it's Natty from Sixteen. All three boys look to her as she speaks and she smiles at them. "Come on, let's see some teamwork! You three are all super talented, if you work together you'll surely win the challenge and get to debut!"

Soul is the first to crack. "She's right guys, we shouldn't be infighting. You know what Byunjae you can have a few of my lines. You too Doc. We'll try to make it as equal as we can alright?"

Byunjae nods in acceptance while Doc shrugs.

"I was fine with my lines before, you two can play preenup without me."

The other two members of the team take a moment to shoot Doc annoyed glances before they begin re-dividing their lines.

One of the other female trainees taps Doc on the shoulder to get his attention. She seems older than the others, though it could just be her bobbed hairstyle and bold wardrobe choices.

"I've got a choreo roughly worked out whenever you guys are ready for it."

Doc nods idly as he glances at the other two members of his group. "K, thanks. I'll tell them when they're done I guess."

The woman nods and waves to get the attention the other girls as she continues speaking to Doc. "We'll go ahead and get started working on it, if that's alright."

Doc just nods again before going back to his phone.

"Okay so you'll take the first chorus and I'll take the second and the third can be all three of us. Agreed?"

Byunjae nods thoughtfully at Soul's proposal. "Yeah. Yeah that should be good. Alright, hey Doc?"

The singer looks up at his chosen stage name. "Hyunmi says the choreo is done and the girls went to practice it."

Soul and Byunjae share a glance, and then the eldest shrugs. "Alright then. Let's go join them and give them the updated line distribution, it may change some things."

Byunjae hums idly and follows Soul out of the room, his steps a bit lighter than they have been in the past several episodes.

The scene changes to the last group, who have just arrived at the JYP stage that was used in the early challenges as well as for the duel.

Ash fumbles for a moment at the door before producing a key and letting the group into the theatre.

The screen is pitch black for a long moment before the stage lights flicker on to show Kangjoo and G climbing onto the stage.

Kangjoo squints in the light. "Did you have to choose the stage lights? This place is going to be a furnace in a matter of minutes now you know." He isn't complaining, just stating a fact, but Ash looks embarrassed as he joins them from the wings.

"Sorry, I didn't want to touch any switches that weren't labelled."

G shrugs and adds his two cents. "It's not a big deal either way. So what song should we do?"

He and Kangjoo look to Ash, who startles and stutters blankly for a long moment before turning bright red and shrugging.

"Um, do you guys have any ideas?" He attempts to cover rather awkwardly, but G and Kangjoo take it in stride.

The youngest looks thoughtful for a moment before speaking. "I might have something. Maybe. We'll want to do something to draw attention to our performance so people will vote for us. One of the groups is nothing but main and lead level singers, the other is one main level singer, a mid-range triple threat, and Reito." He says the youngest's contestant's name with some distaste. "So I'd be willing to be group one will be doing a vocal focused song, while group two will have more of a dance focus with a fun rap part. So we should do something more rap focused, but still playful enough that people will have fun while watching it."

Ash is frowning. "Do you not like Reito?"

Kangjoo looks startled, and then kicks at the stage a bit awkwardly as he replies. "Er, it's not that I dislike him, it's just he's my age but everyone acts like he's some precious and super talented flower when he dances about as well as I do and I sing way better than him. Just jealous or something." Admitting it seems to physically pain him and he quickly moves on. "But what do you think? I know you're not a great singer Ash so do you think you could do some rapping?"

Ash chews his lip nervously. "I... I mean maybe? G is the real rapper here..."

"I could rap too. If it would make you more comfortable." Kangjoo seems eager as he offers, clearly growing more and more fond of his own idea as time passes. "And I'm sure G-hyung wouldn't mind teaching both of us some tricks?" He looks hopefully over at the rapper, his eyes wide and excited and for the first time looking every year his own age.

G nods. "Sure, I could give a short lesson to you guys if you wanted." He's remained relaxed and comfortable throughout the conversation, and doesn't seem bothered at all to wait until he's addressed to speak.

Ash hums nervously, but nods. "Okay then. What song did you have in mind?"

The show return to Noheul's group. The three boys have been joined by a few other guys, who are chatting with Jihyun avidly.

Reito and Noheul are sitting awkwardly to the side, watching the group. Noheul looks slightly miffed, while Reito has returned to his usual look of perpetual confusion.

Noheul looks over to Reito after a long moment. "So, um, why'd you come to Korea?" He tries for cheerful but it's clear he's not totally sure what to do with himself around the teen.

Reito picks up on it too. "Why you pick me?"

Noheul looks confused. "Well, you're a good rapper and decent singer, so even though your dancing leaves a lot to be desired you were an easy call to increase the talent on the team. Not to mention a lot of fans on the voting site were pretty upset when you were eliminated, so that gives our team an automatic boost when it's time to vote which group gets back on the show." He glances over at Reito then, having been staring thoughtfully at his knees up to that point. "Um, did you follow any of that?"

Reito looks thoroughly confused, so Noheul shrugs and simplifies it.

"You're talented and popular with fans."

Reito's eyes light up in understanding and he smiles, though it seems a bit forced.

Noheul looks like he wants to say something else, but Jihyun and his group choose then to come to an agreement and uncluster.

Jihyun walk over to his two groupmates, looking rather proud.

"Alright so we had to edit some stuff we'd agreed on-" He waves Noheul's protests down before they can start- "But I think you'll agree that Jihyuk's suggestions are going to look pretty awesome, plus it solves the problem of our dancing black hole here." He nods towards Reito with no small amount of amusement. "Trust me, we're going to blow this out of the water."

Noheul doesn't look convinced, and Jihyun blows out an annoyed breath. "Look hyung, I know full well what you think of me, but this is important. You know how it is, it's all our dreams to debut. It's the same for me. So I'm giving everything into making this performance amazing. You don't have to like me, but trust that I'm putting more than one hundred percent into this, and that I always will." It's bluntly said, and Noheul looks vaguely stunned.

However Jihyun simply turns back to his friends and waves idly for the other two to join them. "Come on, we'll show you the easy stuff from the end, and then there's one tougher part that you should be able to handle with practice hyung."

Noheul glances at Reito, who's obviously completely lost, and he stands, offering a hand to Reito as well. The young trainee accepts the gestures and the two follow Jihyun.

The scene changes to show Ash's group, who have left the stage area and are now back in the main building.

Kangjoo is halfway through a sentence when the sound catches up with the visual change.

"-sounds fine so I'll just duck into one of the trainee composing rooms and finish cutting things togther. It was pretty lucky that there was no one in that recording booth though."

Ash nods in agreement though he seems a bit bewildered by whatever Kangjoo had been saying prior to the sound cutting in.

G seems a little more aware and gives the group's maknae a verbal response. "That sounds good Kangjoo. We'll head back to the main stage and keep practicing the dance, and I'll do a bit more rap practice with Ash as well. How long do you think it'll be before you get back with the full cut? I'd like to have enough time to run through everything with the back track a few times."

Kangjoo waves his hand idly. "No worries, this should take an hour tops. I'll catch up in a bit." He heads one way down the hall while his groupmates head the other.

The camera follows Ash and G as they walk through the halls of the main building. Ash looks rather uncertain and keeps quiet as they walk. G seems unbothered by the silence, but after a few halls he seems to realize that Ash is uncomfortable as he speaks up.

"So what do you think of our song? Kangjoo didn't do too badly rearranging it." It's said mostly to fill the silence, but Ash looks relieved.

"It's good! I mean Kangjoo is Kangjoo, but he definitely does know how to deal with music. I feel like if he doesn't debut he'll probably end up being a composer or something, he and Ant are definitely the two trainees who are best at that." He fusses a bit with the hem of his shirt as he speaks. "Though I mean I'm not nearly as good a rapper as I really need to be to do the song justice but-"

G cuts him off. "You're doing fine. And everyone seems to be under the impression that the rescued contestants will all be from the same group anyway so all we need to do is focus on making our performance stand out."

Ash nods thoughtfully, and then frowns. "Wait, 'under the impression'? What do you mean by that?"

G blinks, and then shrug almost awkwardly. "Three people three teams. There's another way of looking at what the CEO told us. But I'm staying positive and thinking that it will be the top team all going back. And anyway if he wanted drama he could have told us right after the teams were picked if we'd be competing against each other. Then some people would actively try to sabatoge their teammates."

Ash looks a bit wary. "Yeah, I guess you're probably right." But he still seems worried as the two reach the main entrance and head out of the building.

The scene switches to the third group, who seem to be getting things done.

Soul is talking with one of the female trainees, their heads bent close as they debate. Doc has a mix of frustration and annoyance on his face as a few of the other girls try to help him with the dance steps.

Byunjae is by himself, singing quietly and going over the moves on his own while a group of the girls sit watching him curiously.

The shot zooms in on Soul and his companion and tunes in to their conversation.

"I feel like we could do more in our first solo dance, something to sort of stand out."

The girl looks amused at Soul's words. "So you are trying to stand out from the others, even though this is a team effort?"

Soul has the decency to look slightly abashed. "Well, it's what JYP said. He didn't say that the groups would get in together he said that there were three people being un-eliminated. Three people, three groups. I'm just covering all my bases. This is my last chance Soyeon, I'm getting to be too old to debut." He sounds slightly pained and Soyeon rests a hand lightly on his shoulder.

"I was just teasing a bit, I know this really means a lot to you. We'll come up with something for sure." She smiles brightly at him and he grins back just as warmly.

The camera cuts then to Doc, just as he nearly steps on one of the girls' feet.

She yelps and jumps back, and the girl with the bob cut - Hyunmi - frowns and waves for the group to stop. She walks over to Doc, eyebrow quirked.

"Look if this part is too difficult I have ways of simplifying it." She sounds extremely impatient. "Both Soul and Byunjae are pretty much solid with their solo dances but we haven't even gotten to your second one and there's only a few hours left."

"I can do the main parts of the dance." Doc defends, but it's weak and Hyunmi looks unimpressed.

"So can Soul and Byunjae." Her voice is flat. "Look, let's move on to the main solo dance and I'll make it extremely simple. You just have to let me do all the work."

Doc looks a bit digruntled, but he sighs and gives in after a moment, and Hyunmi proptly gets into his personal space, making him jump a bit.

Byunjae looks up when Doc startles and laughs. "Did he not see Soul-hyung and I doing our dances? Why's he so surprised?"

Natty, who is one of the girls watching Byunjae work, laughs as well. "Well he's been super focused on his own feet for most of our rehersal so it's not that surprising." She jokes cheekily.

Byunjae laughs loudly. "That's for sure!"

Doc hears the comment and glares at the two of them before Hyunmi forcibly turns his attention back to her. The video feed speeds up as the group continues practicing. It slows again about five hours later when Soul claps to get everyone's attention.

"Okay so the three of us need to record a backtrack before time is up and I figure that even between the three of us it'll still take some time to figure out how everything in the recording booth works. So let's start on that now so we have enough time to get everything together."

Doc and Byunjae glance at each other before the former shrugs and nods.

"Sounds good to me." Byunjae agrees as well, stretching leisurely as he does.

The three head out after politely bowing to the girls. Hyunmi then calls for them to grab some water and some rest and that they'll be back to practicing in three hours.

The screen goes dark for a moment before brightening to show all three groups standing nervously in the large practice room along with JYP.

The CEO has a smile on his face that is clearly putting some of the contestants on edge as they wait for him to speak.

"Well you've all created your performances! Whether or not they're any good is of course up in the air, but we'll find out about that tomorrow. For tonight you get a special treat: you all have front row seats to the JYP Nation concert!"

The contestants look a bit confused, though both Kangjoo and Byunjae clap politely at the announcement.

"Now before you go get ready for the concert remember to be back here tomorrow afternoon at one o'clock exactly, otherwise you'll be disqualified from being resuced."

Jihyun raises his hand, looking troubled. JYP sighs but waves for him to ask his quesiton.

"Don't you mean the group will be disqualified?"

JYP looks slightly confused, and then realization dawns on his face and he laughs. "Oh goodness no. Did you not figure it out? Only one person from each group is returning to the competition, not the whole group. Oh, and you will have time in the morning to practice a bit more, just so you know." The CEO finally exits, looking thoroughly amused.

In the room a majority of the contestants look like someone just punched them in the gut.

Kangjoo unconciously reaches out and grips Ash's sleeve. "Only one of us? How is that fair, we all worked together with our groups." His voice sounds shaky and Ash awkwardly pats the younger's shoulder.

Noheul's face is pale. "Crud. Crud crud crud." He looks over at Reito. "Well there go my chances I guess."

Jihyun smacks him. "Like heck. You and I contributed way more to the creation of the performance, surely that will show? Reito is nice and all but he's nowhere near ready for debut. I mean he can't even understand Korean yet, plus he's so young. He has plenty of time to debut still." But he sounds uncertain as well as he eyes their third teammate, who's standing next to Doc as the older presumably translates JYP's words for the boy.

Soul and G are the only two who seems relatively unaffected by the announcement, and they end up graviatating to each other. Sould speaks first.

"You guessed it was that too, huh?"

G shrugs. "Survival show. If it's mean, it shall be done."

Sould laughs a bit. "You've stopped caring about your camera image haven't you?"

G just shrugs again, glancing directly towards the camera as he replies. "Face it Soul, the viewers have already decided who they like. There's no point to pretend to be someone you're not at this point. It doesn't matter anymore."

The time stamp shows that it's the next day at eight in the morning, and already all three practice rooms are in use as the three group scramble to get the full use of the extra time they've been given. The screen divides into three parts to show each group's practice side-by-side as the scene fast forwards through the morning rehearsals.

There's distinct tension in Noheul's group as they work, but they seem to be successfully moving through their performance, each with a power and precision belieing their determination to win.

Soul is also noticably tenser, while Doc is actually more relaxed, accepting help from the back up dancers with less fuss and even going out of his way to offer pointers to his groupmates, which Byunjae seems annoyed by.

The third group is the only one who's dynamic doesn't seem to have changed much. Ash seems a bit twitchy, but Kangjoo and G are both working hard and offering word of encouragement to their hyung as they practice.

The time flies by as the groups practice, and at noon they all leave their practice rooms, presumably for lunch.

Several staff member then appear in the largest room and begin setting up a table. The MC appears in the room a bit later with the CEO and the scene slows down as they chat and the staff members leave, the table and benches finally set up along with a makeshift stage.

"I don't understand why you didn't tell them right away how the judging would work this round." The MC is saying.

The CEO laughs. "Where's the fun in that? Though I admit I thought a few more of them would have figured it out before the day was over."

The MC sighs. "I suppose." But he doesn't sound completely convinced.

JYP slaps him cheerfully on the back. "Don't be so negative, this is all about getting them ready for being debuted. There are plenty of curveballs in the industry, they should be ready for anything."

"But as a group." JYP doesn't seem to hear the MC's quiet reply as he inspects the space and then checks the clock.

"Well the boys should be here soon, I'm sure none of them want to be disqualified before even starting."

As if on cue the door swings open and Noheul and Soul both walk in. They eye each other and automatically sit apart from each other on the benches set up around the room.

The others arrive not much later, with Reito bouncing in last only a few minutes before one.

JYP seems to make a quick headcount before speaking. "Alright then, I assume you're all ready to perform, so let's go ahead and start. Any volunteers to begin?"

Soul's hand is in the air almost immediately. Doc and Byunjae shift nervously but JYP smiles and ignores them.

"Excellent! Do you need any set up?"

Soul shakes his head. "No sir, but we do have backup dancers."

The CEO looks pleasantly surprpised. "Well I suppose I never told you you couldn't do that. I'm impressed with your resourcefullness. I assume they're waiting in the hall?"

As the CEO speaks Byunjae has already gone to the door and waved in the group of female trainees they'd been working with. JYP quirks a brow, still smiling curiously.

"Alright then, plug in your music and let's see what you've created."

(Soul: Leather Jacket       Doc: Black and White Coat       Byunjae: Long Coat)

JYP seems quite enthusiastic about the performance if his applause is anything to go by.

The other three groups look increasingly nervous the longer the applause goes, and when the CEO finally stops clapping the room seems to let out a sigh or relief.

"Excellent boys! Hyunmi I asume this was your choreography?"

The girl with the bob shrugs modestly, but her form belies her pride.

"It was a wonderful idea to utilize the girls as a resource, who's idea was that?" JYP's eyes travel almost hopefully towards Doc, who promptly jerks a thumb towards Soul, who's grinning brightly.

"Mine sir. Thank you so much for the compliment."

JYP seems to deflate a bit but nods. "Job well done. Even with two of our... shall we say less skilled dancers the dance itself looked good. Doc you did well to use your lower register for this performance, and Byunjae you sounded wonderful as always. And of course Soul, you did quite well. And now that I've given words of encouragement," he looks to the other groups, "You six can feel free to voice anything you saw that you didn't particularly like."

Jihyun pounces immediately. "Personally, and maybe it's because I'm a dancer, but it was pretty obvious that none of you are good dancers. The choreo was fine but the girls did basically everything. Especially for Doc, that solo dance at the end was all Hyunmi, not you."

Doc shrugs. "That's true."

Kangjoo raises his hand politely before he speaks. "Honestly I thought it was a shame how often Soul let the backtrack sing for him. You're easily the best singer of the three of you but you let the other two do the heavy lifting while you focused more on style. Though I guess the bit when Soyeon stole your mic was a nice touch." He adds, almost as an afterthought.

Soul nods, chewing his lip in annoyance.

JYP waits a moment to be sure no one else has anything to say, and he seems a bit dissapointed at the lack of critiques coming from the groups. "Alright then, who wants to go next?"

Kangjoo starts to raise his hand but Jihyun jumps up before he has a chance, with Noheul standing not long after.

"We'll go." The team leader says firmly, waving for Reito to get up as well. The maknae vanishes behind the stage while Noheul and Jihyun get ready and start the music.

(Noheul: Red Suit       Jihyun: Spotted Suit      Reito: Rapper)

JYP is back to looking quite pleased. "I was quite shocked when the backup dancers came onstage! Who are these young men?"

Jihyun grins. "Guys I used to dance with back before joining JYP. They were nice enough to help out."

JYP nods. "Once again that is wonderful initiative on your part."

Kangjoo and Ash share a look, both clearly nervous.

JYP continues with his positive analysis. "The dance was well executed and I was pleasantly surprised to hear Jihyun sing, I'm used to you rapping for your evaluations. And having Reito not come on until after the more complex dancing was complete was definitely an interesting but positive call." He finishes his short speech and nods to the groups. "Any critiques for these three?"

Soul seems more than happy to start. "I know Reito is a bad dancer but the fact he didn't even attempt the chorus dance was sort of offputting. Both of you looked great and he broke the flow for me."

Reito seems to understand something negative is being said about him as his fists clench and he frowns, but he stays silent.

Ash tentatively clears his throat. "Um, kind of going off of what Soul said I think it could have been fun if you guys did something more with the chorus dance, especially you Jihyun. You're crazy talented in dancing but it felt like you limited yourself to match with the group."

"Of course I did!" Jihyun snaps.

A few of the contestants and backup dancers glance at JYP to see if he'll interceded, but the CEO looks curious as Jihyun's rebuttal continues.

"This is a group project, which means the whole group should look as good as possible. If I danced full out it would make my teammates look bad and that's not what a team is about. We have to all make each other shine however we can. So don't tell me I could have done more because this isn't a solo show, this is a group."

JYP gives a few slow claps when Jihyun finishes. "Nicely said, though I must say I'm surprised to hear that coming from you. Now if no one else has anything to say?"

Silence.

"Wonderful, last group, you're up!"

Ash, Kangjoo, and G all walk up to the stage as the previous group evacuates. Ash pauses on the stairs and turns to Jihyun as they pass each other.

"Hey, I'm sorry. I wasn't really thinking about all that." He sounds genuinely upset, and Jihyun sighs dramatically before replying.

"Dude it's whatever. We all know I'm a top dancer, and next time I do something solo you better believe I'm going to blow you all out of the water. But teamwork is a thing people need in a group and I'm trying to show that I'm capable of it."

Ash nods in understanding. "Well for what it's worth I've always known you were."

Jihyun looks surprised for a moment, and then snorts. "Whatever, sappy. Go kick some up there."

Ash laughs and then catches up with his teammates, who have finished clearing the stage and are waiting patiently for him to start the music.

(Ash: Long Coat       G: Tank Top       Kangjoo: Singer)

Jihyun claps pointedly as the performance ends, and a few others follow his lead.

JYP looks slihgtly less impressed than he had the previous performances. "I have to say perhaps going first would have done you some favors. But a simple stage can be effective if used correctly and all of you definitely had great energy. G especially was effortless with his charisma and Kangjoo you nailed those high notes." He sits back and waves for the groups to give their thoughts.

Jihyun speaks up immediately. "I've got one complaint. Ash-hyung, you should have been more confident. Your rapping isn't half bad for someone who I'm pretty sure never rapped before yesterday." He smirks a bit at the end of the sentence and Ash smiles abashedly.

"Sorry..."

Byunjae then clears his throat, looking unsure if he should speak, but he does when everyone looks at him. "Honestly it sounded like Kangjoo was straining on the high notes to me."

Kangjoo frowns angrily. "Pretty sure you can't even hit hight notes." He snaps back.

Byunjae starts to retort but this time JYP does interfere. "That's enough! I'll eliminated both of you right now if you start anything. Now does anyone have anything useful to add to this discussion?" He doesn't wait before continuing. "Then you're all dismissed. Results will be announced in a week. Until then you may rest and relax, but be sure to keep practicing in case you make it to the final challenge."

The groups slowly exit, tension heavy in the air around them as they eye their teammates uncertainly.

The MC, who until this point has been quietly observing, finally speaks to the CEO once the room is empty. "More than three of them could do quite well in a group."

JYP chuckles. "Of course. And some of them would be terrible. But it isn't our choice. Let them be hopeful for a few days, they deserve it after all this stress."

The MC sighs. "I'm pretty sure this is only stressing them out more."

( AUTHOR'S NOTE ) Urgh this chapter was tough for some reason. It's been a long week I guess.

Anyway, there it is, the final rescue round! So who deserves a second chance the most? Don't forget that voting for last week's episode is also still open! Both these polls and the comment voting for the final eliminations close this Thursday the 13th at 11:59 CST!

Chapter 53: Oh boy here we go again. Everyone strap on your safety belts: feelings are coming.

Oooh Byunjae. Of course he's calculating his way into an easy, we knew he'd do that. And I suppose we'll see more of him in the next bts too. You know how I feel about him and it's not altogether positive, but I suppose that in and of itself is a win for you. As long as I feel something you did your job well, and I certainly feel something for this pipsquick. "There is one person who has escaped rightful elimination." I knew this was coming but also off Byungjae DO NOT TOUCH MY DOYEON. Thankfully I also know how this happens.

SPEAK OF THE ANGEL. Oh honey. "This is fine" is the thing we tell ourselves when we desperately need that to be true.

"It almost worries him how familiar the feeling of drowning has become just in the past week."

.

"Nineteen years of coasting and then this show hits and suddenly it's a constant barrage of everything he's ignored his entire life."

NOPE.

"Maybe the world is telling him something."

TOO REAL. NOPE. NOPE. LET'S NOT.

Oh man Doyeon. You gotta check yourself before you wreck yourself son. Take care of yourself before you take care of others. Don't use the reliance of others to avoid your problems PLEASE I'M DYING HERE. . Dani I do not appreciate being on the other end of this stick goddamnit. I much prefer writing the timebombs not reading them ;A; This is SO STRESSFUL.

"maybe this was karma, coming back to put him in the eliminated group where he was supposed to be."

Doyeon I will reach through this ing screen and give you the overwhelming amount of hugs that you need and deserve SO HELP ME.

Chapter 52: Omg that picture of jyp as I scrolled down xD Poor guy what did he do to you Dani??

Wow not pulling your punches going into this huh? I feel for Kangjoo and his defeated attitude. Honey! "Almost, but not quite. Because he's Choi Kangjoo and nothing scares him, especially not moody teenagers. " Honey you should be very afraid there's nothing more terrifying than teenagers! Oh man Byunjae, so much pettiness. Jude continues to intrigue me. So much depth packed in such a pleasant little exterior. Hmmm.

Aaah honestly this section warms my heart. The friend group has always been the most wholesome part of the competition, even with the troubles Doyeon faced. Even with the time bomb that's Doyeon they're still somewhat of an oasis of uncomplicated calm. "Seongjun honestly loves the idiots he calls friends. He says as much to Doyeon when they're piling back into the van to head to the second shooting location and gets a grin and a hug from both Doyeon and Hongsol, who overheard the comment. Gosaeng gags at them, and Doyeon retaliates by attacking him with a hug as well." I'm not crying you're crying! It's so sweet and we needed that after the defeated acceptance with a fringe of salt from Kangjoo. As much as I love all the drama, there is nothing quite like a break with friendship and happiness.

Aaah and then there's the edge of drama. Seongjun the one who switched. And of course you can say whatever dumb you want in this group, Doyeon, Sanghyun, and god forbid GOSAENG are all idiots honestly. Whatever dumb thing you'd say Seongjun, I can guarantee you Gosaeng has said dumber things <3 Aaah. Fair weather friends huh? There's so much history packed in those few paragraphs. "They're fun, and they're kind, and they make Seongjun feel safe and happy. He can't ask for more than that." I'M NOT CRYING YOU'RE CRYING. So wholesome ;A;

Chapter 51: Holy this is the best gift I just finished a messy birth of a literature review chapter and I can use this treat. LET'S DO THIS.

So of course my son can be counted on to be dumb and break tension <3 Oh an I forgot how much I love Gosaeng and his stupidity. Come here one of my shameless favourite sons! And Ash. He never really caught my eye during the broadcast but of course a POV would change that. Man the power of POVs. LOOK AT THIS FRIENDSHIP FORMING MY HEART. But alas, elimination ever loom. Uuuugh bittersweet.

Ah. Of course. Jihwan. Aaaah yep that hurt knowing the inplication. When one is joint to the hip, separation does not come gentle. It explains why G was so unhappy for the beginning of the show, but he always did grow on me when he came back with a new outlook. G was one of the biggest comebacks for me honestly. He's fascinating.

Doyeon. Oh Doyeon. I've been dreading this. But also not because we all know how I love having my heart ripped out and crushed to dust, it's my favourite thing! Okay. So. I couldn't even really livecommen for that, I was too busy gripping my heart and reading. That whole section was masterfully written Dani. You really nailed his spiral and his confusion and his denial- . That was good. That was art. That was amazing. It hurts but in a good way.

"She didn't think they'd actually try to argue with her" oh honey. Oh babe. They're heads. "Once the dance is complete she reveals their costumes for the performance and all hell breaks loose all over again." PFFT of course. I feel bad for her she shouldn't have to deal with these s but alas she chose them.

Chapter 50: This isn't a SoC but I'm gonna toss my thoughts at you anyway!

I've always found Doc an interesting character. The way he was forced to do this even though he didn't want to because of his family connections is a very interesting way to go about nepotism. Thus this little look into his history is so fascinating, the way does and doesn't accept what's given to him at the same time. And of course the salty duo of him and Jihyun was always a pleasure!

Next up is the man itself. I love this contrast between bossy control freak Jihyun and most passive man alive Ant, and Jihyun's subsequent confusion that anyone would not /want/ something.

Ah. Of course JYP had seen, just as we did, that Jude is really the only viable candidate for a leader. I'm not surprised by this obvious favouritism (I do write Do or Die after all) and manipulation, and it's not what I see as the biggest revelation for me in this snipped. No, what I found even more interesting was the little look into his friendship with Hongsol (though, let's be real, I'm not exactly an unbiased party there). Just the fact that Jude decides to manage Hongsol instead of being straight with him speaks volumes about their friendship, and not something I'd gathered from the actual show. It speaks of something of an inequality there. An unbalance. And then even that could be dismissed as wanted what's best for your friend, even if that's not a way of going about it that I would personally find acceptable, if it weren't what followed: the almost calculated decision to not have time for Hong's insecurities right now but, as he puts it, handle them later. There's this emphasis on handling, he's handling his friend. One shouldn't be handling their friends. I doubt he has any malicious intent at all, but this does suggest this inequality. If it's an inequality in positions and/or an inequality in how much the friendship means to each of them remains to be seen but I'll be keeping my eye on them.

Chapter 47: Holy crap, these BTS chappies are such nostalgia trips ahhhhh~

I'll be catching up on \/s first before I get drawn into rereading all of this just to prepare for BTS, but holy crap, the fact that we are literally taking quotes of the chapters and unpacking them for cool tidbits is such a squee-worthy concept!!!!! (It's so good to see these boys again too!)

Chapter 44: I ACTUALLY HAVE SOME TIME TODAY SO IMMA STREAM OF CONSCIOUSNESS THIS LIKE I DID THE FIRST EP okay let’s go

The beginning screen flashes always remind me of the Marvel opening for some reason haha, but then I mentally pictured the “Two Days Later” as one of those spongebob transition screens???

You can’t just pair people up and put them into separate rooms full of tension, Dani~ You make it too easy to ship things!!

Aaaaaaaand by ship I don’t mean OTP but rather the package of my heart labelled “Fragile: Handle with Care” then punted off a cliff into the cold seas of “nooo my children don’t be sad!!”

Chapter 44: Oh man that was- I think a crazy ride is definitely the good descriptor here. I can't believe it's over either. 21 has been such a staple in my week, waiting around for the weekend for chapters while the rest of the week was taken up by various forms of adulting or despairing over no wifi. I'll miss it, even though I know that it's going to get replaced with Vs real soon. It's still not exactly the same you know? I love all these s so much now. They're MY heads and I love them. Well, okay, OUR heads.

Oh man for a moment I was scared Jude was going to get eliminated, in which case everything would have definitely fallen apart I mean who else is going to lead this merry band of misfits? Especially since Kyu isn't there either, oh no that hurt me. That one hurt me real bad. He was the big one besides TJ/Koda/Jude that I really wanted to see debut, also knowing his backstory and how much he deserved it. He came so far only to just not achieve his goal. I'm sad for the Sanghyun's too, but I didn't have near the attachment to them that I have for Kyu. Kim Kyuhyun please join Doyeon and Gosaeng in the you-deserve-so-much-more pile. Seongjun and Hongsol are the only ones of the friend group who made it and damned if that doesn't sting.

Chapter 44: That was very, very familiar to that of a real survival show. You captured emotions really well, so thank you for that. Both of my favorites, the Sanghyuns, sadly didn't make it to debut, but they made it very far, and I'm proud of the both of them. Using MADTOWN for their debut is really nice! Underrated groups need much more love than they're given. I was a bit worried when the final members were chosen, not because of talent but because of everything that took place during the show. However, towards the end, those worries calmed down A LOT. I found myself wishing these were real people and a real group I could support. Honestly, it reminded me a lot of No Mercy (that being my favorite survival show, honestly). I loved the JYP feel you gave to it, and I love the personalities of the MC and the interviewer. I also love the group's name being Gold in the end. Overall, I obviously very much enjoyed this as I finished it in mere hours. And now, I'm even more excited for Vs to begin. I'm sure the females will be just as interesting, if not more, than the males of the this story. Expect to see me commenting frequently over there even if my girls meet their downfall. :) - Jelly

Chapter 42: Allllll the way back to Simon Says

girl

This was cruelty in the most beautiful way like… man. I never get used to these eliminations, and even though I know who makes it to episode 9, it’s still rough seeing some of the kids go. (That little bit of foreshadowing with Na Sanghyun looking particularly worried though… I didn’t catch that until the reread, but dang…)

I feel like Soul is just kind of cursed, haha. Not his own fault, per se, but everything bad that’s happened to him so far seems mostly due to circumstance rather than his own qualities. Like Xaris said, this kid is a solid that any group would be lucky to have, but first there’s the fighting team and then there’s going up against St. Jude… kid can’t catch a break, even though he (and Sam Kim) sing like daaaaang boy why are you not everywhere.

These repeat match-ups are hurting me inside, man. I know when I first read that G and Xaris were going against each other I immediately was like oh god oh no please let this happen only once, but hello episode 9. I honestly love both of them so much. G is fantastically mature, and Xaris has shown so much growth. Since I can’t tell a good rap from a saran wrap, I’ll have to base my choice on personality… which is impossible, Dani, waiiii u do this?! Do I want the one who is already frighteningly mature or the one who is slowly maturing? Do I want the one who takes everything in stride and never stopped powering forward or the one who never backs down without a fair amount of fight and learned to keep powering forward after briefly stopping? DO I WANT WELL-DEVELOPED CHILD OR CHILD DEVELOPING WELL? CAN’T I JUST BUILD MY SHRINES IN PEACE?!

oh, also… *moves Xaris’ and Soul’s shrine closer together* At least you will be together in this way, regardless of what happens…
