Present Day – October
“JB…JB, are you listening to me?” A sudden flash of white in JB’s peripheral vision startled him, making him jump in his seat and lean backward, looking up; sitting on the other side of him was Leah Vu, and judging from the look on her face, he had done something wrong – again.
“I’m sorry,” he said, sitting up further in his seat. “Did you say something?” Leah laughed incredulously.
“Uh, yeah,” she responded sarcastically. “I’ve only been saying something for…oh, I don’t know, the past five minutes.” JB paused, his eyebrows raising. Had she really? He hadn’t heard a word from the moment he had turned to the menu in his hands, though he could hardly say that he had been paying much attention to the menu, either. His thoughts had been wandering aimlessly as they had a tendency to do, and had been doing for months. The expression on Leah’s small, pretty face was clearly one of angry irritation, and the only thing that JB found that he could do, was the only thing that he’d been doing for the past few weeks.
“Sorry,” he told her, reaching up to rub the back of his neck; Leah sighed, rolling her eyes a little.
“Okay, that’s it,” she declared suddenly; JB paused, frowning curiously. “I can’t take it anymore.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Look, I was so excited when I found out that you and that girl finally broke up,” she began; JB’s frown deepened, masking the wince that automatically wracked through him. “I honestly didn’t think
