There was no rest for Aspen once JB was gone.
She retreated into her dorm and fell into a seat at the foot of her bed, her mind in a panic. All she could think about were the last words that he had said to her, the last words she realized she ever wanted to hear from him. He was back, and when he had returned there hadn’t been anything that she could do about it, but now that he was there, she couldn’t stand the thought of him leaving, no matter what would happen to her If he stayed. He had pushed her into a corner, leaving her to make an immediate decision; she’d never thought that she would have to make it so soon.
The thought of JB leaving forced Aspen back out of her dorm and into the streets just a couple of hours after she had gotten into it. She couldn’t bother to stop and wait for public transportation; instead she opted to walk the nearly half hour that it took to get to JB’s apartment, a small flat on the top floor of a building in Mission Bay. She was shivering by the time she reached her destination but she ignored it, her sights set on the door in front of her as she firmly knocked.
After a moment the door opened to reveal JB, dressed for bed in sweatpants and a long sleeved black shirt, his hair damp from a shower and pushed out of his face. He took one look at her and his eyes widened in alarm.
