CHAPTER 7

“Not bad!” A middle aged man sitting behind the office desk clapped his hands.

The man wore white rimmed glasses and a beige French hat over his head. Now that I was close to him, I realized his office desk has several Konan comic books scattered on it, a tobacco pipe on one side, and two movies of the James Bond series beside his laptop.

This man must be a fanatic of detective stories. = =

I could pretty much guess why he hired me now, probably nothing else than fulfilling his own hobby.

“Hi, I’m Lee Soo Man, and you must be Ella.”He stood up and leaned over the desk to shake my hand. I saw the name card that was pinned to his suit: Lee Soo Man, CEO of SM entertainment.

“Nice to meet you.”I nodded.

“Did you meet the members already?”He asked.

“Yes, they are very nice people.”I lied. Well, definitely not Kyuhyun.

“Correcto! Then I hope you enjoy working with them!”He smiled.

I stood there, quite dumbfounded, the only thing this meeting is about is informing me how nice they are?

“Now about the important part. You want to know why I hired you?”He suddenly looked at me and asked.

“Yes, why?”

“I hired you to protect them, since I don’t want them getting hurt.”He smiled.

Them getting hurt? Impossible! Poor CEO, he worries too much. Because right now I’m the victim and they are the ones causing the damage.

“Don’t they have heaps of bodyguards already? Their safety should be guaranteed.”I asked. The underlying question is why am I the special bodyguard?

“That’s true. But those bodyguards can only protect them physically, in times of obvious danger. And that is not enough.”

He stared at me. Those eyes, though small (= =), held my attention. They looked helpless and so full of determination, that it caused me to stiffen. Finally making me feel the seriousness of this job.

“However, I hired you to protect them from underlying dangers. Threats that strangers like them cannot recognize, or understand.”He continued and pointed to the line of black-suited bodyguards outside the room.

“That's why I need you to get close to them. So you will know them well and understand them.” He picked up a photo frame (which I cannot see), and it carefully with his hand, as though afraid to break something fragile, while looking at it with a soft tenderness in his eyes.

“So how am I supposed to do that?” I interrupted him.

“Good question! You will be living with them starting from today, to improve your relationships!” He spoke enthusiastically with a smile.

“WHAT! But I’m a girl! That’s not appropriate!” I retorted.

“It’ll be fine. There’s no way they will harm you, since I’m sure you’ll kick them into the clouds before they have any chance to.”

“Ok, but my luggage…” I wasn’t about to give up.

“I already asked people to send them to the dorms. You’ll find them there.” He smiled at me. However I did not feel warm or welcoming by the smile. I felt icy cold.

Mr Lee suddenly disappeared under his desk. And noises of metal clanking together were heard. He came into view again with three black boxes and placed them on the table.

Inside the boxes were a watch, a pen and a pair of earrings.

“These are for you to use during work.” He handed them over to me with eyes full of excitement.

I suddenly questioned the danger he informed me about this job. He’s probably just making everything up. I knew it! This is his real intention. To fulfill his hobby!

“Thanks.” I wore the watch, and the earrings, and stuffed the pen into my jean pocket.

“Oh and one last thing!” Mr Lee put something hard in my hand.

On the card was a photo of me smiling. To the left in bold blue letters typed:

KYUNG HEE UNIVERSITY.

First year student.

Ella Lee.

I froze.
