Chapter 18
Cold Beautiful ThingsSnow was flittering down to the earth, paper thin. It left not a dense layer of white but a grey, wet mess on the ground. The footpath was dirty. Hyeran was wearing her nice shoes. She probably would have noticed that her shoes were getting sodden and filthy at any other moment, but she was lost in her thoughts that weekend. She kept wondering how a person could kill another person in cold blood.
A streetlight flickered above her, which was the only thing that alerted her to the darkening of the sky. It was early twilight, the sun had just lowered below the horizon and was still bright in that dusky way. She would have to start walking home now, though, if she wanted to get there before dark. So she turned around and went back the way she came. She had gone for a walk to help her organise her thoughts, or at least come across some decent ones rather than just going through nonsense in her head.
One example of such nonsense was to try and bait the murderer that she had been foolishly and amateurishly hunting. Three out of four of the murders had been committed against young women, though the locations were scattered across the Seoul metro and suburban areas. It was very unlikely to have worked, which eased her mind since it was the stupidest thing she's ever come up with. Unless she wanted to end her life early, then it would have been a great idea.
"Ok Hyeran?"
Hyeran stopped in her tracks and looked up. Even after their time apart she recognised his voice. Of course, she thought, you couldn't possibly have thought you were done with each other forever, could you? Taekwoon was far too memorable a figure for destiny to decide that he wouldn't be a part of her life ever again.
"Taekwoon. Hello," she bowed to the man before her on the footpath. "What are you doing out here?"
"Just going for a walk," he answered.
"But Taekwoon, you live whole suburbs away!" Hyeran internally rolled her eyes at herself for that stat
