Chapter 13

Dilemmas In Our Destiny

Hi guys. Happy Valentine's Day. So this is the first of the final five chapters. Let me guys know if you still have any unanswered questions so I can find a way to answer them in the epilogues. Thank you to all 2120 people who have viewed my fanfic and to my voters, subscribers, and commentors. Also, thank you for putting up with my formatting issues and typos. I promise you guys a farewell note at the end, but since it isn't the end yet I'll save all my overly cheesy statements.

Sungjong woke up in the morning to find himself in Sungyeol’s arms. He could feel the dried tear tracks on his face, the dried mucus crusting his nose as he silently slid out of the older’s arms. Maybe if I had fallen for you instead, maybe if I had come to realize you were all I needed when I was actually by your side, maybe then things could have been different. Sungjong let that thought run through his head a little, as he Sungyeol’s hair to make sure that the older wouldn’t wake up. Sungjong then went to make himself presentable and soon found himself by Sungyeol’s side again, gently shaking Sungyeol awake while whispering comforting statements into Sungyeol’s ears. Sungyeol finally brought to a half-awake state after a night full of comforting Sungjong shot the younger boy a half asleep smile.
“Good morning, Jong,” the statement was sleep-slurred and it caused Sungjong to chuckle.
“Sungyeol, I want you to play along with me today, will you do that?” Sungjong couldn’t help but feel something warm inside of him at the nod he received. Sungjong moved his hand to interlock his fingers with Sungyeol’s only to feel Sungyeol giving his hand a slight squeeze. “What do you want for breakfast?”
    “Ton Katsu,” Sungyeol answered enthusiastically.
“Your favorites haven’t changed a bit since when we were younger. Even though it isn’t the healthiest option I’ll make it for you, just the way you used to love it,” Sungjong knew Sungyeol didn’t understand, but that didn’t stop him from dropping the other’s hand and rushing to the kitchen. “Why don’t you help me? Do you know how to cook?”
“Soo burns Soo’s hand every time or sets the kitchen on fire, Sungyeol cook for Soo when Hyun not there,” Sungjong laughed at that, it seemed Myungsoo’s cooking skills had just deteriorated over time.
“Hyun, as in Nam Woohyun?” Sungyeol nodded in affirmation and Sungjong couldn’t help but smile remembering Woohyun’s aspirations to be the greatest psychiatrist the world had even known. Remembering how he and Dongwoo would sit together talking about how their relationship would be difficult after he became an amazing doctor and Dongwoo an amazing article author and how they were going to have to work twice as hard to stay together. The Kim’s really knew how to ruin the perfect relationship. “Do you know Dongwoo?”
“No, Sungyeol don’t know,” Sungyeol replied as he continued to slice everything that they needed on the cutting board.
“What about Sunggyu or Howon? Do those names ring a bell,” Sungjong asked in hopes that maybe they were all still together in some way or another.
“Gyu came once to pick up Hyun and take Hyun home. Gyu and Hyun love each other like mommies and daddies do,” Sungyeol informed, Sungjong stopping his current task to ruffle Sungyeol’s hair. The older boy was too adorable.
“Your mommy and daddy didn’t though, they didn’t love,” Sungjong informed quietly, knowing too much about Sungyeol’s past.
“No, they did, but Sungyeol has no mommy, just two daddies,” Sungyeol answered back with a pout.
“Are you talking about Chanhee and Byunghun?” Sungjong received a fervent nod of affirmation. “Why haven’t you visited them?”
“Soo’s family said no,” Sungyeol voice wavered a little, “Sungyeol miss them.”
“Ah, so that was the Kim’s fault too. You poor thing, you really gave up everything for Myungsoo,” Sungjong murmured, the smell of the food he was making filling the room.
“Sungyeol loves Soo a lot,” the older boy replied only to receive the driest of chuckles, a sickening mix of sarcastic mirth and bitter jealousy.
“Oh trust me, I know,” Sungjong bit out, before taking in a breath to calm himself. “Today’s about you and me though Sungyeol so let’s not talk about anyone else.” Sungjong felt arms wrap around his waist and puffs of breath warming his neck as a response.
“If that’s what Jong wants,” Sungyeol’s voice was sweet, and Sungjong felt his heart jump a little.
“Why are you so nice to me?” Sungjong couldn’t help the question, but that was how it always was with Sungyeol.
“Jong nice to Sungyeol, Sungyeol nice to Jong,” Sungjong knew that Sungyeol was talking about the promise to go back to Myungsoo and it hurt somewhere. Guess I am not as numb as I thought I was, Sungjong’s thoughts couldn’t stop him from leaning on Sungyeol as he cooked, though. When the food had been cooked, plated, and placed on the table Sungyeol shoved it down his throat, finishing the plate in a record time of five minutes. Sungjong chuckling offered the other part of his own meal, and upon Sungyeol’s refusal pouted until Sungyeol agreed. Sungjong, after receiving consent, proceeded to feed the older his food while taking some for himself. The hand that wasn’t pressing chopsticks holding food to Sungyeol’s lips interlocking with Sungyeol’s fingers. Just then it hit Sungjong that this is probably how Dongwoo and Woohyun had spent their mornings before their memory had been taken away from them. That’s when it hit him that Woohyun would never have these mornings with Dongwoo ever again since with his memories and his feelings for the other had been stolen away too. That Dongwoo would probably be preparing a breakfast for Howon ever since he had forgotten about Woohyun and fallen for the younger boy from Busan.
“Why don’t we go to the amusement park?” Sungjong could tell by the new found joy in Sungyeol’s eyes that it wasn’t a bad idea. Maybe if Sungjong hadn’t got caught up in admiring the warmth in Sungyeol’s beautiful, doe eyes, he would have paid attention the small whisper in the back of his mind about how this was how he always used to spend time with Sungyeol. Really, though, who could blame him for trying to get closure for all the things of his past he had lost through Sungyeol? Well besides Myungsoo, that is.
~
“Why Sungyeol?” Woohyun hadn’t meant for the question to come out, but now that everyone had left him alone with Myungsoo the silence was just too foreign. Even L seemed to be quieter ever since Sungyeol had left the house. When the silence continued Woohyun assumed he wouldn’t get an answer until he heard a murmur. “Pardon.”
“His eyes,” Myungsoo repeated, and just as Woohyun was about to ask for the other to elaborate, “I don’t know if you noticed, but when I first saw them they were so full of hope. At the time, I was already diagnosed with my anger disorder and I had given up on ever having anyone be normal around me. My own brother wasn’t allowed to be with me without my mother’s supervision. I stumbled into the orphanage bruised after picking a fight, and the first person who saw me was Sungyeol. He was pretty bad at speaking, his grammar way worse than it is now, but I still understood that he wanted to help me. He wasn’t scared and there was just a hope in his eyes that I would stay with him wherein anyone else there would have been fear.”
“So your family adopted him?” Woohyun had never known much about how exactly Myungsoo had gotten Sungyeol and this was the first time Myungsoo was talking to someone other than L ever since Sungyeol had gone missing. Woohyun was afraid that if he stopped talking, Myungsoo would never start again.
“Yeah, I had never asked for anything before so when I asked for Sungyeol they got him for me,” Myungsoo answered.
“Why didn’t they give him back when they learned that you were hurting him?” Woohyun questioned.
“It was different with Sungyeol, whenever I lashed out before it took me days to calm down. After Sungyeol though, whenever I hurt him and I realized what I was doing I stopped and ran away. I should have been there, I should have helped him, but now me being the stupid coward I am, I ran away. I ran away each ing time and now he isn’t even here anymore,” Myungsoo didn’t cry, but even a fool would notice the flatness in his voice that could only come from a person with no soul.
That flatness drove Woohyun to his next question, the fear that Myungsoo had lost all of himself without Sungyeol drove Woohyun to ask his next question, “What was different with Sungyeol?”
“I love him, I always have. I was too stubborn to notice it, I even used that poor boy who my family made sure I can no longer remember to hide my love for him,” Myungsoo sounded so guilty. “You have to understand how hard it is. Even to this day, I wonder if I am taking advantage of him. I wonder if he would have left me by now if he was normal. I wonder if maybe he is straight and I am forcing him to be gay because his mind is too immature to know better. I wonder if each time we kiss I scare him. I wonder about the past that he hides from me. I can’t ask, though, because if I do he might leave. I need him Woohyun,” Woohyun understood after this confession why he could never solve Myungsoo’s issues.
“Is that why you hurt him Myungsoo, because you are scared of seeing him hurt, but you are too scared to ask him because you think he will leave you? Do you hit him when you feel he is scared or hurting and you can’t help him?” Woohyun received a nod of confirmation. “Myungsoo, Sungyeol loves you. The affection might be watered down, but you definitely mean more to him than anyone else does. He is a lot smarter than you think he is, just trust him and cherish what you have now.”
“You know that is easier said than done, right?” Myungsoo retorted.
“I know it is, but it’s the first step towards you getting off of medication. No one said that would be easy,” Woohyun stated and he decided to take Myungsoo’s silence as a promise to try. “Why did your family take away our memories, though?”
“My own memories were wiped, I was just as shocked as you were to learn what my parents did but I really don’t know why. I mean I spent my whole high school life living alone with Sungyeol and the only thing I can remember before that time was the adoption and our first summer together before middle school. Plus, I spent my whole high school life with only Sungyeol and then when I meant Sunggyu and Howon in the industry well Sunggyu was enamored with you and Howon could not be separated from Dongwoo. It’s just as shocking for me to know that we all once knew each other, I had a boyfriend that I used as a cover, you and Dongwoo were in love, Sunggyu and Howon were in a relationship, and my parents hypnotized us all into forgetting. If that is shocking to you, imagine how I feel right now.” Myungsoo confessed. Woohyun wanted to offer comfort but the clock struck five.
“I need to get going. Sungyeol will be at the park at six and I don’t want to be the one that’s late,” Woohyun nodded in response and left after giving the younger a hug.
~
Sungyeol could tell the park they were at almost immediately. Myungsoo bought him here all the time even though it normally wasn’t this crowded. He looked around in hopes of seeing Myungsoo but didn’t and his disappointed eyes turned to Sungjong.
“We are a few minutes early he’ll be here soon, goodbye” Sungjong whispered the words into his ears, but something in Sungjong’s voice had changed. Before Sungyeol could understand what, though, Sungjong’s lips were pressed against his. Sungyeol blinked in shock and in that moment the lips on his own disappeared as Sungjong faded into the crowd around them. So Sungyeol stood there until he found another pair of lips on his own, but this time, he was pulled into a warm embrace with Myungsoo apologizing and whispering a thousand promises into his ear.
