Nostalgia

One Day

Yoseob gathered his textbooks neatly piling them in his bag. The first new week of the new semester of the year had begun; and soon the next year will be his final year. After that he’ll be graduating heading straight into the adult world with no knowledge of what the future will hold for him.

After saying his goodbyes to his classmates Yoseob left wondering what he should have for dinner tonight, a hand shot out gripping onto his shoulder startling him out of his thoughts. Looking behind Yoseob was astonished to see Doojoon grinning widely.

“Hey, what’re you doing here? I thought you were gonna be busy the whole day.”

“Things happened and there was a change of plans so I’m free today, aren’t you happy to see your handsome boyfriend?” he lazily slung his arm over Yoseobs shoulder bringing him into his side.

Yoseob playfully rolled his eyes, “Handsome would be an understatement, you’re more of giant puppy or a man-child.”

“You know, I’m starting to believe what Dongwoon said about you is true now.”

Doojoon led them down the hall letting Yoseob through the door first, “Huh? What did he say about me.”

“That you’re a tsundere.”

Yoseob stopped walking. “I’m a what?”

“It’s someone who acts coldly to the person they like but then they act lovey dovey to them afterwards.” Doojoon amusingly watched how his boyfriends face transitioned from confusion to anger, the tip of his ears were steadily growing pink.

“th-that’s not true! I swear the next time I see Dongwoon I’m gonna burn his stupid one piece dolls to ashes.”

Doojoon let him ramble on about his great plan as he looped his arm around Yoseobs entwining their hands together before sheltering them in his own pocket, it was almost 4 in the afternoon and the sun was ready to settle down beneath the horizon line. He guided Yoseob around the block leaving the campus grounds; Yoseob was now talking about the new syllabus that they were going to have to cover for this year. Both of them were close to graduating in the next year while Hyunseung and Kikwang enter their third year leaving Dongwoon with his second. Doojoon himself was still training at the all boys’ school getting familiar with his surroundings with what to expect, he was supposed to be today but Junsu decided to take over leaving Doojoon to have a three day weekend.

They headed off to Doojoon’s car that was parked off at the side; Yoseob buckled himself in as Doojoon drove them out into the road. Thankfully there wasn’t much traffic for once but nonetheless there was no hurry back home, coming to a stop at a traffic light Doojoon turned the radio filling the car with soft music. They passed by the hurried faceless people and vehicles running past them, it usually didn’t take longer than an hour to arrive at Yoseobs apartment.

“Um, Doojoon?”

The turn signal beeped as the car turned right, “Yeah?”

“You’re going the wrong way; my apartment is down there remember.”

Yoseob watched Doojoon laughed to himself, at this point Yoseob was starting to wonder what was really going on with him today.

“Today I am going to take you out on a date.”

He sat up straight in the passenger seat, now curious on where they were heading. “Really?”  His curious eyes gawked at Doojoon’s side profile.

“Yes, well kind of – more like a triple date? I also invited Junhyung, Hyunseung, Kikwang and Dongwoon too actually.”

The rush of excitement deflated a little, he ideally hoped that Doojoon would sleepover and they would just stay in bed to watch bad horror movies with takeout food. But hearing that the rest would be there was good too.

“Really? Are they already there?”

“Yup we’re the last to arrive; I booked us a place at this new restaurant that my friend recommended me.”

He leaned back into his seat eager to try out new dishes; Yoseob felt his phone vibrate in his pocket. On the lock screen popped up numerous missed messages from mainly Kikwang and Dongwoon asking on their whereabouts now.

“They’re starting to get restless.” Unlocking his phone he hastily typed out that they were on their way.

“No problem, we’re all ready here.”

After finding a good parking spot, Yoseob followed Doojoon to the restaurant settled in between a real estate shop and a flower shop. The warmth greeted them keenly in comparison to the cold, inside the restaurant was full with family and friends gathered together over square tables. His eyes quickly skimmed through the people occupying the tables until he heard a certain laughter that he knew all too well, at the very back corner Yoseob found the group. Kikwang and Dongwoon were facing away apart from Junhyung and Hyunseung sitting opposite them, judging by Junhyung’s scowl on his face he figured they made it just in time to save Junhyung’s ever growing headache from the maknaes.

Hyunseung spotted them first as they approached greeting them with a small wave. Doojoon took the seat at the end with Dongwoon and Kikwang on his right side whilst Yoseob sat opposite side with Hyunseung and Junhyung on his left side.

“Finally you’re here.” Kikwang reached over for the napkin to the side without looking at the newcomers.

The eldest scooted forward in his seat, seeing that most of the side dishes and appetizers had already been devoured. “You lot started without us.”

“Early bird gets the worm hyung.”

Junhyung glared slightly at the maknae of group for talking with his mouth full before diverting his attention, “For being late I think the both of you should pay the bill.”

“I was intending to pay the bill myself actually, so everything’s on me.”

Dongwoon and Kikwang gawked at Doojoon Jaws comically dropping at what he said even Junhyung had to stop himself from almost choking on his drink.

“Hyung! Do you really mean that?” Yoseob could see the stars sparkling in Dongwoon and Kikwang’s eyes, he took up his chopsticks slowly piling his plate up while they were still in awe, Doojoon clearly had no idea what he had just gotten himself into.

He grinned broadly at the attention, “Yeah, I really do mean it so eat up as much as you can.” In an instant Kikwang and Dongwoon had began eating whatever was left leaving Hyunseung to look over the menu and Junhyung to wave over their waiter for refills and new orders. Doojoon laughed at their small antics, it never failed to amuse him. Yoseob sighed shaking his head in front of him as he halved the food in his plate giving the rest to Doojoon, he hadn’t even realised that he was the only one who hadn’t started eating yet.

“Don’t come crying to me when you see your account later on.”

Taking the chopsticks from the side Doojoon started eating up as much as he could, “Please don’t remind me.”

In return Yoseob chuckled dipping his dumpling into the sweet and sour sauce. It didn’t take long for their refills and new dishes to arrive. They gathered the empty plates to the side to make room for the new ones replacing their spot as the waiters carefully carried the plates away, the aroma of freshly cooked meat aroused their stomachs at the feast in front of them. After taking multiple pictures of the food from almost every angle Doojoon took up the pair of tongs placing down pieces of meat onto the grills. The sizzling sound added to the conversations of their table, Dongwoon was in pure bliss savouring the taste with Kikwang laughing at him from his side before sneakily snatching some of the food off his plate. On the other side the duo were found huddled close together, Hyunseung pointed something out on his phone that had made Junhyung. Yoseob didn’t fail to see the glint in Junhyung’s eyes when one of his comments had Hyunseung burst into a fit of giggles.

The atmosphere was peaceful, he crossed out his previous thought on wanting to spend time alone with Doojoon, and everything right now was just perfect. A blurred object wiggled in front of him instantly breaking himself out of his thoughts, Yoseob blinked twice only to realise the bleary object was Doojoons hand.

“Hey, are you okay?” Doojoon was leaning on his arms watching Yoseob with a troubled look on his face; he almost resembled a worried puppy.

“I’m fine I just spaced out for a bit there – hey you haven’t eaten much.” The food was still left untouched on Yoseobs own plate compared to Doojoon’s that was almost empty.

“Well neither have you” Doojoon picked up a spring roll wiggling it in front of the others face until Yoseob accepted it.

He couldn’t help but chuckle at the way Yoseob brightened up as he chewed down on the spring roll, “I’m guessing it’s delicious?”

Yoseob nodded picking his plate up expecting to find more of the roasted meat on the grill yet there was none left, he didn’t even get to eat at least one piece of the grilled meat. How long did he even space out? Hyunseung and Dongwoon collected more of the empty plates to the side whilst Kikwang ordered for another plate of beef.

The round of food arrived ten minutes later; Doojoon took up the grill once again after Dongwoon had almost burned himself.

The group settled down on their remaining side dishes and drinks in the mean time, the sizzling from the grill blended into the background of the hushed conversations coming from the people around them.

“So How was everyone’s holiday?”

“It was good, went back home to visit my parents my mom was glad that I got to stay home longer than just the weekends.” Kikwang grinned as he scooted up next to Dongwoon nudging him slightly with his elbow. “And this one /here/ surprised me the day after Christmas, we went out pretending to be tourists for a few days” The maknae ignored the steady growing blush on his face.

Junhyung smirked “Oh? I didn’t know that our maknae was such a romantic~”

Kikwang gleefully snuck his arm around Dongwoon’s free arm. Yoseob slightly pitied Dongwoon for being in the hot seat right now he knew if they all know how his holiday went they would definitely not go easy on him like they were being with Dongwoon.

“But isn’t your parent’s restaurant normally busy during the holidays?” Hyunseung spoke up for the first time in a while.

“Yeah, they felt bad that I ended up being in the restaurant for almost a month – which I didn’t really mind at all but my parents felt guilty and forced me out to enjoy what’s left of my Christmas break.”

The shortest two of the group continued to coo over how modest and shy he was being associated with Junhyung’s usual remarks.

"How about you hyung? Did you enjoy your holiday?" Yoseob entertainingly watch Hyunseung ate a dumpling.

Junhyung poked his boyfriend effectively snapping him out of his little world. "Seung, Yoseob asked how your holiday was."

"Oh, sorry seobie. I also went home for the holidays, and I got to meet Geurim's boyfriend."

Kikwang gawked, "What?! I didn't know she had a boyfriend, how come you didn't say so?"

"I didn't know either; she recently just introduced him to us."

Hyunseung shrugged casually plopping another dumpling in his mouth. Junhyung chuckled after noticing a bit of food at the corner of his lips, without hesitation he gently brushed his thumb across the corner of his mouth. Hyunseung shyly smiled at Junhyung feeling slightly embarrassed, Junhyung smiled adoringly at his boyfriend.

Yoseob pretended to be disgusted from Junhyung's action,"Anyways, do you and your parents like him?"

"He’s really nice, I don't have any problem with him and neither do my parents. As long as Geurim is happy then I'm happy too."

"It’s good to hear that noona is doing well, remember when she used give Junhyung a hard time when both of you started dating." Dongwoon laughed along with Kikwang, Yoseob could never forget the long hours he had dealt with Junhyung's constant complaints on his many failed attempts at getting along with Geurim whilst she had no problem with the rest of the group.

"Haha but that's all in the past and we get along now so drop it."

The waiter arrived in time to refill their drinks before Junhyung ended up accidentally grilling people’s faces. Yoseob looked across him seeing Doojoon watch the trio bicker back and forth with a smile on his face. "You've been quiet is there something wrong?."

"Yeah, it's fun to watch you guys bicker. That’s all." He poked the sizzling meat on the grill carefully flipping them over one by one.

"Are you sure you’re really okay I haven't heard one dad joke from you in almost an hour, this is a new record."

Doojoon snorted. "f.y.i. my jokes are legendary okay and you know you love them." Yoseob laughed at the way he exaggeratedly flip his hair back before announcing that the meat was cooked, the bickering immediately broke up. A flurry of chopsticks reached across snatching pieces of meat off the grill and onto their plates almost leaving nothing left, Dongwoon passed a dish of raw meat to Doojoon to grill.

"How about you Doojoon hyung? What did you do during your break?"

"Me?" he fell silent for a second trying to recall what he did "my break was good, my parents were in Japan for a while so I skyped with them during Christmas and new years I also spent a couple of days with my noona and her boyfriend."

Kikwang let Dongwoon have sip of his drink, "Wow they’re lucky to spend Christmas in Japan I heard it's phenomenal during that time also I'm guessing that you're the youngest in your family then?"

Doojoon nodded, "Yup Youngest in family yet the oldest one here, the next batch is almost ready to take." using the tongs he pressed onto one of the meat as it released a loud hiss into the air.

"Nice, I'm starving." Hyunseung tried to swat Junhyung away as he started to fuss over how messy he looked.

"Really, well, Hi starving I'm Doojoon."

A round of groans came from the rest before the income of complaints except from Dongwoon, who somehow always finds Doojoon's jokes to genuinely funny.

"Wait a second, we almost forgot about Yoseob! How was your break?" Kikwang asked as he reached over to taste some of the side dishes that were next to the grill.

Yoseob gulped down his drink before pausing, “My break was good, nothing much happened. Got to spend more time with Yanggaeng and all.” Setting his glass down, Yoseob eagerly fidgeted with his chopsticks as he started picking on his bibimbap without looking up once. And it was odd. Odd and slightly vague, normally Yoseob would go on full detail and even drop a funny story that happened whilst he went back home but that didn’t happen. Kikwang made eye contact with Junhyung who seemed to notice this too.

“Well, what about you hyung? How are you and Hyungnim?”

“Just like everyone else I went back home and bonded with my brother and parents, they really love Hyungnim though especially my dad.” Junhyung observed his childhood friend who was pretending to look busy “But, are you sure that’s all/ that happened?”  He had almost missed the subtle way Yoseob flinched.

Hyunseung soon caught on noticing Yoseob fidgeting in his seat. “Did something bad happen?” his voice was laced with concern.

Yoseob sat up straight in his seat trying to ignore the stupid twin grins occupying Kikwang and Junhyung’s face, they knew that something did happen and the duo intend on getting the truth out of him whether he liked it or not.

“N- Nothing bad happened – really hyung.” he ended with a small awkward laugh hoping it would be enough to curb Hyunseung’s worries.

Doojoon figured he should interfere by now to save Yoseob yet he was curious to see how it’ll all play out.

A silent stare down initiated with Junhyung and Kikwang against Yoseob, the latter felt a wave of awkwardness wash over him underneath all the stares he was getting including Doojoon (which he vowed to kick his later for not helping him out), besides the silent stare down it looked like Dongwoon didn’t realise what was even going on as he snatched the near burnt meat on the grill happily piling them on his plate.

Fine. Something did happen okay? Long story short I slept over at Doojoon’s during new years because – because he was by himself and I missed him a lot. Just leave me alone I hate you guys.” Junhyung’s whistle was accompanied by Kikwang gloating over how he knew there was something more to it since Yoseob was ‘the world’s worst liar’ in his book. Doojoon had internally cooed at how the blush across Yoseobs face and ears right now made him look so adorable right now, he was struggling to not reach out and pinch his cheeks knowing well that his boyfriend would bite his fingers off.

“Wait you slept over at Doojoon hyung’s because you missed him?”

“Y-Yeah.” He glared at Doojoon who wasn’t so subtly making kissy faces at him.

“So, it was like a booty call then?”

Junhyung choked over his drink, completely bewildered at Hyunseungs question. Dongwoon had a double take making sure if he heard the words coming out of Hyunseung correct was right.

“Hyunseung hyung, you- you do know what a booty call is right?”

“It’s when you meet up with someone at like 2am to-” Straight away Junhyung cut Hyunseung off by feeding him some of his kimbap. It had worked seeing Hyunseung beamed at how tasty it was effectively forgetting what he just said not long ago, Junhyung and everyone else could never get used to how blunt he could be sometimes.

Kikwang faked a cough getting everyone’s attention “So was it just like Hyunseung said then? Or-”

What?  No it wasn’t anything like that – I mean we didn’t do what you think we did. It’s just that with my parents being overseas and my sister living with her boyfriend I was feeling lonely for awhile until Yoseob came over which was like next year, literally. And I’m really glad he did come over.”

An uproar of erupted with comments on how sickeningly how cute the two were, even when majority of them were aimed at Yoseob just to egg him on. Yoseob did his best to defend himself though he was positive that he looked like a bright tomato right now, Doojoon finally took pity gathering everyone’s attention that the next round of meat is ready to be eaten. The clock ran on into the late hours with the restaurant was heading into its last hour, and as Doojoon had promised he paid for their meals before they got themselves ready to brace the cold, the streetlights welcomed them as soon as they stepped out. Dongwoon and Kikwang announced that they were leaving first since they had travelled by the bus, Junhyung had offered to drop them home but they politely declined. Dongwoon insisted that they were in no rush and wanted to wander around a bit more before heading home leaving the group huddled close together as always. Junhyung and Hyunseung left after them hand in hand after saying their goodbyes with the additional comment of ‘didn’t want to disturb the love birds anymore longer’ from Junhyung.

After racing back to Doojoon’s car (unsurprisingly Doojoon won with his stupid long legs), Yoseob finally indulged himself in warmth once again getting comfortable right away. The sound of the engine came alive as soon as they were back on the main road; Yoseob took in the dyed purple and pink sky peaking behind the roofs of the tall buildings. Every time he was in Doojoon’s car he couldn’t help but think back at all the memories he shared with him, the first time they met when his phone screen cracked, having lunch in the car when it rained heavily out of nowhere and not forgetting the time when Doojoon had persuaded Yoseob in the middle of the night to go on a Pokémon go hunt because snorlax had appeared on his radar and he was determined to find it no matter what.

A heavy sigh broke into the air, “Stupid traffic jam, I’m guessing we’ll be stuck here for another hour or so.” Doojoon scowled trying to oversee the long row of cars ahead of him. He looked to his left to see Yoseob evidently comfortable in his seat; his brown scarf covered half of his face that hung loosely around his neck. Is posture was slouched against the window with his forgotten coffee cup in his hands that they bought across the small coffee shop that was next to their parked car.

“Hey sleepyhead.”  His arm stretched out to poke the hidden nose behind the scarf, Yoseob’s eyes fluttered open.

“Don’t forget to finish your coffee, if you fall sleep don’t expect me to carry you. I’ll just leave you in the car if you do.”

Yoseob groggily mumbled under his breath, Doojoon chuckled at the incoherent threat. “By the way, the kids I’ve been coaching for the past few months are gonna have a match soon with another school.  They’ve really been a handful at the start but I think they’re starting to warm up to me, at least I think so. Oh, by the way do you want to come and watch the match? I think it’ll be mid march, I’ll have to check again but I’ll let you know.”

There was no reply in the other end.

“Yoseob?”

As expected sleepyhead had already drifted off to sleep, shaking his head Doojoon slowly took the still warm coffee out of Yoseob’s hand placing them in a cup holder. Hours later Yoseob would whine about his coffee getting cold and not being able to finish it whilst it was still warm, He leaned in softly carding his fingers through Yoseob’s hair. The ends of his lips curled up when Yoseob had subconsciously leaned into his touch.  Even under the dim streetlights he still looked charming as ever, the scene in front of him could easily be a renaissance painting. A timeless beauty throughout the era.

In other people’s perspective they would simply think that he was exaggerating, but Doojoon couldn’t care less at what they thought because Yoseob would and will always be perfect in his eyes.
