Rule #7
The Rules of SurvivalRule #7: Question everything. Why? Why? Why?
Ryeowook’s knuckles were white as he gripped the seat of the car. “You need to slow the down before you get us killed!”
“You wanted me to lose your buddies,” Kyuhyun reminded him, glancing in the rearview mirror. “Trust me that this is going to be the only way. I already tried to lose them in the city, but the bastards are too damn good at their jobs. The only way we can do it is to outrun them. On the freeway, they’re never going to catch us.”
“Until we hit something!”
“You’re going to have to trust this hand-eye coordination of mine,” he pointed out. “Once they’re out of sight, we’ll exit the freeway and head wherever you want.”
Ryeowook closed his eyes and concentrated on breathing deep for a moment. If he kept watching the road, he was going to vomit. But the loud honking of a semi-truck and the realization that Kyuhyun had wandered into the oncoming lane briefly to go around another car had his eyes flying open. “I swear on the powers above, if you do not stop this vehicle right now, I will kill you myself!”
“You’re so dramatic,” Kyuhyun said, slowing the car down drastically and turning off on the next exit ramp. “I’m pretty sure we lost them this time. You really need to lighten up a little.”
“I am trying to save your life so you can decode a disc for NIS and you are driving like a bat out of hell,” Ryeowook accused him.
“Actually, bats fly really well. They have that echoing thing they do that’s kind of like sonar, so they never run into anything, just like me!” Kyuhyun pointed out, patting Ryeowook’s arm.
Ryeowook scoot closer to the window. “Don’t touch me!”
“You didn’t feel that way this morning when you were cuddled up with me,” Kyuhyun teased.
“I had nothing to do with that!” Ryeowook heatedly shot back.
Kyuhyun glanced over at him and smirked. “What’s so terrible about sleeping with someone? According to Minho, you’re gay as well.”
Ryeowook’s jaw dropped. “Why the hell would he tell you something like that? And why does he know that?”
“He told me because I asked. And apparently those guys have the scoop on just about everyone.”
Ryeowook’s cheeks turned pink yet again and Kyuhyun was rather proud of himself for having such an effect on the little temperamental agent. “We’ll see how much business they get from me in the future.”
“I imagine there’s not a surplus of such stores, so they probably feel safe telling me your secrets, even if it will piss you off a little. Although I don’t know why you’re so bothered about it.”
“I’m not!” Ryeowook denied, folding his arms over his chest. “Take a right at the next block. Whether I’m into men or women makes no difference, since I really don’t get involved in relationships anyway.”
“Why?”
“First of all, as an agent, it puts the person you’re dating or married to at risk. If you have enemies, they’re always looking for a way to hurt you. The other reason is that someone who loves you tends not to like you working a dangerous job and eventually tries to talk you into leaving it.”
“If you found the right person you wanted to spend your life with, wouldn’t you be willing to walk away from being an agent for them?” Kyuhyun questioned.
Ryeowook shrugged. “I don’t know. I’ve never found anyone I’d be willing to leave the agency for yet…and I’m not leaving until I bring down the Omega Operation, no matter what. So you see, it doesn’t really matter.”
“Guess I’m going to ruin all your ing excuses if I decode this disc and it contains all the names of the Omega Operation's partners, won’t I? Maybe I should pretend I can’t for the sake of your bachelor’s life?” he suggested.
Ryeowook rolled his eyes, not even dignifying him with a response.
“It’d be such a shame to accomplish your life’s goal and have to settle down at such a young age,” Kyuhyun continued, driving at a leisurely speed to keep from attracting any attention. He stopped at a stoplight and looked into the rearview mirror. Agents Donghae and Eunhyuk were no longer following them. “I think we really did lose them this time.”
“I really don’t understand why you give a crap about my love life,” Ryeowook grumbled, looking out the passenger window, not seeing anything of interest.
“You know, you’re a pretty smart guy, for the most part,” Kyuhyun said, looking over at the moody agent who’d saved his life less than twenty-four hours ago. “But you’re really oblivious to some things.” Kyuhyun leaned over and kissed the agent on the cheek before returning his attention to the road. He continued driving down the road, waiting for his protector to throw another fit.
Ryeowook looked over at the computer hacker in disbelief. He did not just kiss him! Certainly he didn’t do anything as stupid as kissing him! Because that was like making a death wish. “If you ever…EVER do that again, I swear I will choke the life out of you myself! I don’t care if the agency needs you or not.”
“I am positive I would rather die at your hands than at President Choi’s,” Kyuhyun said.
“Don’t tempt fate.”
Kyuhyun leaned over and kissed him again.
When they walked into the hotel room they’d booked, Kyuhyun’s left cheek was bright red and a bit swollen. That was what happened when you dared to kiss your protector after he warned you not to kiss him again, but Kyuhyun figured it was well worth the bruise he was going to end up with. And he was still alive, after all, which might not be the case tomorrow or the next day. If the chances of him dying in the next few days were as high as everyone claimed they were, then he'd be damned if he wasn’t going to enjoy himself a little before that happened. The only thing that he couldn’t explain was why his armed never felt the same way, considering he risked his life on a regular basis.
As Kyuhyun looked around the room and spotted the large bed—just one of them—he began to laugh. “You must have liked sleeping with me more than you are willing to admit to!”
“Don’t flatter yourself,” Ryeowook said, setting his bags on the bed and beginning to unpack the anti-bugging equipment from the duffle bag. “It was cheaper to get a single bed and we can’t both sleep at the same time for safety reasons. One of us always needs to be awake to listen for someone approaching.”
“That’s all right,” Kyuhyun said, setting his computer down on the desk. “We can just lie awake in bed and cuddle.”
“You touch me again and the next thing I do to you will hurt a hell of a lot more th
