Chapter 3
Variety RoyaltyIt had been about six months since Jaye’s appearance on Running Man aired, and apparently she was well-liked: her personality was easy-going but fierce, especially when she was pitted against the other RM members, and her variety skills were unprecedented. She didn’t really understand why she became a big deal though; she was just being herself. However, she got calls from every broadcasting station in the country afterwards, asking her to appear on various other shows.
It was difficult for her. She had originally come to Korea from the USA to teach English, and it had been a month since she arrived before getting caught up in the entertainment business. Everything went back to normal, until the episode she was in came on television a couple weeks later. Jaye had enjoyed her school, her fellow teachers, her classes, and her students: they were very kind and understanding, and her kids behaved very well considering she was a foreigner with a Korean face.
“Maybe that’s why I’m considered so special,” she thought to herself. Which didn’t really make any sense, because she was sure other Korean Americans made their way over to the motherland during her lifetime.
“Oh well,” she said under her breath as she crossed the foyer of the Mokdong SBS building.
She eventually had to quit her job of one and a half months: she was getting too much attention everywhere she went, including her school. The students she taught were calm about the whole Running Man episode, being considerate and so on, but the rest of the student body wasn’t so understanding. Jaye apologized profusely to the principal, and told her she had to quit. Mrs. Kim understood of course, and was sad to let her go, especially at the beginning of the school year, but there was nothing she could do.
During all of this, she actually kept in touch with Yoo Jaesuk. After he brought her into the variety world, he said that he knew something big was going to happen with her, although he didn’t know what. They exchanged phone numbers, and she ended up spending a lot of time with his family, getting to know his beautiful wife and son, sometimes babysitting for them when the couple wanted to have a date.
