Chapter 5

Young-ae's Ghost

"Come in." Ha-na said as she opened the door for Yoo-ah. Ha-na was moving into her new house today and Yoo-ah had come to help her move in and decorate. "Wow, this house is beautiful. How did you manage to get it at such a cheap price?" Yoo-ah asked as she carried in bags of grocery. "The owners were in a hurry to leave, something about the house being haunted." Ha-na said and shook her head in disbelief. "What did you say?" Yoo-ah stopped in the middle of the living room. "Don't tell me you believe in such nonsense." "You don't?" "Yah, why should I believe in something I can't see? Why should I even be scared of something that can't hurt me?" "Still..." Yoo-ah was reluctant to go into the house any further. "Yah Song Yoo-ah, are you using this as an excuse not to help me right now? I thought you were braver than this. What ghost?" Ha-na grabbed the bags out of Yoo-ah's hands and stormed into the kitchen. "Ha-naya, don't disregard it just because you can't see it." Yoo-ah eventually joined her in the kitchen and sat on the counter. "You don't know the history of the house." "Dwaesso! Are you going to help me or not?" "Fine fine. Let's get to work." Yoo-ah slid off the counter, ready to get to work when a message came in on her phone. It read "this is a picture of my friend, Kim Jin-wook." and attached was indeed a picture of Jin-wook wearing a pair of jeans and a black shirt and sitting cross-legged on the grass in front of a house. "Ha-na, take a look at this." Yoo-ah showed the picture to her. "Who is that?" "Kim Jin-wook, Kang-minssi's friend." "He looks good." She took a closer look at the picture, "He's smiling but his eyes look so sad." She said gently. She almost felt sorry for him. "How can you get that much from a picture?" Yoo-ah wondered but Ha-na couldn't stop looking at it. "Yah, have you forgotten we have work to do? We need to clean and move furniture and stock your fridge." Yoo-ah snapped her fingers in front of Ha-na's eyes to get her attention. "Yes of course, let's get to work." They worked on cleaning the house and putting everything in order but the entire time, Ha-na was thinking of How sad and lonely Kim Jin-wook looked in that picture. She felt her heart go out to him. 'I really have to meet him, he needs a friend.' She thought to herself. ******************************************************* Su-jin pulled the curtains open in her father's bedroom. It was already 10 am but he was still in bed. "Appa, wake up. I made breakfast." Jin-wook made a noise but didn't get out of bed. "Appa! It's 10 am on a Saturday morning. Are you just going to stay in bed?" "Su-jinah, I worked late yesterday so I'm really tired." He pulled the blanket tighter around him. "Appa, I know for a fact that Samcheon doesn't make you work late, so why do you do it?" He was resigned now, he knew Su-jin wouldn't leave him alone anyway. She always insisted they have breakfast together and learned to cook at a really young age. "Okay okay, I'm awake now. I work because of you goongjunim." He said and pulled her into his arms. "I don't like you working late. What if you get sick?" She said genuinely worried. "Mianhae, I'll do better." Su-jin gave her father a hug and kissed him on the head. "Come and have breakfast, I made pancakes." She left him alone to wash up and went to set the table. When he went down, Su-jin was just finishing up setting the table and looked up at him and smiled. She looked just like her mother, Jin-wook felt a little pain in his heart. "Hmm, looks delicious." He said trying to hide his pain. They sat down to breakfast and just as they were about to start, the doorbell rang and Su-jin went to get it. "Samcheon!" She yelled when she opened the door. "Aigoo, who is this pretty lady? Is it Su-jin? Wah, chincha yeppeu!" Kang-min replied and hugged her. "We were just about to have breakfast, come in and join us." She said and he obliged. "Good morning." Kang-min said cheerily as he sat next to Jin-wook. "What brings you here?" Jin-wook asked. "I came to visit my darling friend and my darling goddaughter." "What darling goddaughter? I haven't seen you since last year." Su-jin said. "Mianhae Su-jinah, you know I went abroad." "Are there no phones in Japan? You could have called me or sent me an E-mail even." She pouted and Jin-wook laughed. "How about I make it up to you?" "How do you plan on doing that?" "Would you like to go on a picnic next Saturday?" Su-jin looked at her father as if to ask if it was okay. "Your father is coming along too. We're going on a double date." "Double date? Samcheon, since when did you have a girlfriend?" "Since he went on a matseon this past Monday." Jin-wook piped in. "What is she like? Is she pretty? Is she nice?" Su-jin asked excitedly. "Swallow Kim Su-jin, before you choke on your food." Jin-wook said again. "She's very pretty and she's very nice. I think you'll like her. I even set your father up on a date with her friend." Su-jin's head snapped up to look at her father. "Appa, is that right?" "Well, I agreed to one date." He said quietly. "Is that okay with you?" Kang-min asked Su-jin. "I don't know, I'll have to meet her before I can decide." Su-jin said and quietly focused her attention on her food. She really hoped this woman was nice. She had seen countless women try to charm her father over the years. Some of them she had liked, some of them she had outrightly hated but none of them ever stayed. Her father was too closed off from love. When she was younger, she hadn't minded it meant she didn't have to share her father with anyone. But as she had gotten older, she had noticed how sad and alone he looked sometimes. She wished he would find someone soon, not just for his sake but for hers. She wanted to know what it was like to have a mum. Someone who would teach her about things, she hated having to learn them on her own. Her father and her Samcheon were talking but she wasn't paying any attention to what they were saying. She was too busy praying silently that this woman was the one who would make her family whole again. ************************************************************* Ha-na and Yoo-ah had finished moving house and Yoo-ah had finally gone home to give Ha-na a chance to settle into her new home. Ha-na laid in bed with a book and a warm glass of milk. She wasn't feeling tired yet even with all the work they had done so she decided to read a book. Two chapters into the book, and she started to doze off. She decided to put the book away and get some sleep. Suddenly, she heard a sound like the wind sighing. She got out of bed to check if any of the windows were open in the living room. She closed them and headed for bed when she heard the sound again. This time it sounded like it came from the kitchen. She went into the kitchen but there was nothing there. "Is this house really haunted? Ah, that doesn't make any sense, maldaandwe." She turned off the light and turned to go to bed and this time she heard someone crying. It sounded faint, almost as if it was coming from a far away place. "Who's there?" She asked. She headed towards her bedroom and the sound get louder as she got closer. When she opened the room door, she heard the sobbing loud and clear but she couldn't see anyone. "I must be dreaming, this must be a dream." She said to herself. She had dozed off earlier, so she must be having a lucid dream. "Help me." She heard a whisper suddenly and she jumped. "Who's there? Who are you?" "Help me." The voice insisted again, getting louder with every minute. "Leave me alone." She yelled and covered herself with the sheets. "Go away, go away." She chanted, trying to ignore the crying and the sighing. After a while, there was silence in the room and she came out from under the sheets. She looked around but she didn't see anything or hear any sound. "That's right, it was all a dream." She turned over and soon was fast asleep. Young-ae hovered above a sleeping Ha-na and stared at her. "She's beautiful, and she looks a little like me." Young-ae studied her sleeping face. For almost thirteen years, she had been stuck in this world, unable to move on to the afterlife because Jin-wook was unhappy. She had loved him so much, but she was sad that he hadn't let go of her all these while. She studied Ha-na again and wondered if she would be the one this time. All the other women Jin-wook had met had failed one test or the other. Either Su-jin didn't like them, or they were insincere with her. Jin-wook hadn't cared one way or another and it made it difficult for her to be at peace. She was there when Kang-min had insisted on introducing Jin-wook to her and she had tried to find her. She might be a ghost, but she wasn't that powerful. It was pure coincidence that she had decided to move into this house. Young-ae would try her best to make sure Jin-wook liked this one. She might love him, but hanging around in this form was getting really tiring for her. The next morning, Ha-na decided to make pancakes from scratch and gathered all the ingredients together. She was mixing the batter, when she accidentally knocked over some flour. She moved to clean it up when she saw a writing begin to appear in the flour. "Annyeonghaseyo." The writing read. Ha-na stood stock-still for a second before she let out a bloodcurdling scream and hid under the counter. "What is this so early in the morning? Am I still asleep?" She stuck her fingers in her ears and chanted "it's a dream, it's all a dream." She poked her head out from under the counter and looked around. There was nothing, but she looked at the flour and saw that there was a message. It read: "I'm sorry, did I scare you? I didn't mean to. You can't see me and you can't hear me, but I needed a way to communicate with you. I need your help. Will you help me?" "What the hell is this?" She sighed to herself. It seemed like she wasn't dreaming after all. "Who are you? And why are you haunting me?" She said trying to hide the fact that she was terrified. She saw the message in the flour disappear as if the person had erased it with their hand and words began to appear again. "My name is Lee Young-ae and I'm not haunting you, I need your help." "You're really snooty for someone who needs help." Ha-na snorted. "Wait, why am I talking to myself?" "Are you going to help me?" Young-ae wrote. "Why should I help you? I don't even know you." She replied. She quickly cleaned up the flour before Young-ae could write another message and she made sure she kept every surface clean. Young-ae sighed as she watched Ha-na clean every surface of the kitchen, this was going to be harder than she thought. ************************************************* Jin-wook knocked on Su-jin's room door and waited for her to invite him in. "What are you doing?" He asked. She was laying in bed and reading a book. "I have a test on this book tomorrow, so I'm studying." "Can you give me a few minutes?" He asked and she indicated that he sit. He grabbed the chair from her desk and sat opposite her. "We haven't talked about me going on a date. What do you think? I won't do it if you don't want me to." "Appa, are you still thinking of that tantrum I threw so long ago? I was young and selfish." "You're still young." "I want you to be happy, all those years ago I didn't want to share you with anyone that's why I acted like that. But I'm more mature now. Give it a chance, I'm willing to do the same thing." "Really? Are you sure about this?" "Absolutely. Besides, I need someone to talk to about this cute boy who just transferred to my class, and it can't be you." "Yah!" He yelled and she laughed. "I have to study for my test Appa." "Okay, I'll leave you alone." He raised his hands and started to leave the room. At the door, he turned back and said, "You stay away from those boys, teenage boys are nothing but trouble." "Neh." She giggled and made a shoo gesture at him.

Author's note: It's not scary, right? I thought long and hard about How to write Young-ae's ghost character, then I ended up deciding to make her funny instead of scary. I'm dealing with writer's block these days and I'm also busy, so this chapter may not be interesting or sensible, but I hope you like it no less.
