Jessica

Shades of Warmth

The faint hum of the blow dryer and the constant, yet gentle pattern of Jessica’s hand combing Sojung’s hair were calming and warming up her heart.
She couldn’t help but felt a warmness all over her body whenever Jessica blow dried her hair.
Slow, no rush at all.
Time drifted quietly.
Sojung dozed in and out in a dreamlike state.
Sojung’s hair was getting dryer now she sensed.

“Your hair,” Jessica spoke up. Although her words was barely above the blow dry volume. Sojung heard well enough. “I’m jealous of your hair. It’s long, smooth and silky.”

Of all the things Sojung could think of: Jessica’s million dollar smile, her yet doll like nose, her small chin, her proportional body shape, her charm, her maturity, her personality which Sojung always was jealous with.
What so great about her hair? It always so dull and black. Sojung never had asked why. She just went along with everything Jessica said.
But dued to some reasons, perhaps out of curiosity Sojung spoke up that day, "My hair is dull and black. It never dyed before. I don't see what is so great about it."
Two words was all that Jessica simply replied, "It's natural."
Jessica brought a stand of Sojung’s hair and sniffed it tendering. “And it smells nice. Who ever will marry you will be so lucky.”
Jessica smiled.
“Jessica, we use the same shampoo,” Sojung pointed it out.
“Used to,” Jessica corrected.
Pain poked Sojung heart. Must she always failed to think before she speak?
“I’m sorry,” Sojung said apologetically.
“yeah,” Jessica nodded. She attempted hard to smile. “I can’t wait until my hair grow back.”
“Sojung,” Jessica raised her voice, attempting to change the subject. “You have to blow dry your hair after a shower. Don’t sleep with your hair still wet. It can cause headache or even nightmare, did you know that?” Jessica advised while her hair.
“Jessica don’t worry,” the younger one replied in a proud, cheering voice. “I’ll grow my hair long and I give you some.”
Jessica couldn’t help but laughed at her innocent remark. “Umh,” she nodded with a wide smile while glancing at her weak, pale reflection in the mirror.

Sojung woke up sobbing. Wet, feverish tears kept streaming down like rain.
And she couldn’t stop herself for a very long time.
Sojung didn’t listen to Jessica. Sojung went to bed with her wet hair. Her white pillow gradually drained the wetness in her hair.
Now she laid there crying with half dried hair, half wet pillow.
Jessica mentioned she could get nightmare from sleeping with dripping wet hair.
Felt the chilled ran through her spine, Sojung curled her body into a ball.
2AM her night clock shown.
2:01 now.
Sojung turned her body to look at the ceiling, which filled with trillions of the tiniest black and gray dots.

The silence of the night along with the thought that she was alone in that dark infinite of reality: Jessica is gone, Sojung cried even heavier than ever. She however, covered with her hands as attempt to lessen the cry, she didn't want Kris to check on her.

She missed Jessica dearly.
