Two
Tortoise and Turtle
I stretched my arms as I went out of the Jeju Airport.
Jeju’s afternoon breeze welcome me. I almost squealed in delight if not for the fact that many people will be staring at me if I do.
“Jaien agassi?” a woman in front of me, holding a banner with my name asked.
“Mrs. Byun?”
My beloved cousin told me that Mrs. Byun is the caretaker of his cafe which I am asked to manage. He also told me that she’ll meet me at the airport after I set foot on Jeju’s soil.
Good timing.
Mrs. Byun smiled at me. “It’s good to see that you had a safe trip.”
I feel that this lady is sweet. She is such a motherly figure. “Yes, thank you Ma’am.”
“Oh don’t call me Ma’am. It’s too formal,” she smiled.
“Okay, Mrs. Byun then?” I smiled at her too. She nodded then ushered me to the parking lot for her car. She had a blue small van. I went in and put my baggage on it then I sweeped inside.
We talked about the Yesung’s cafe as we stroll Jeju. We’re headed to the cafe already.
I’m quite distracted from our talk because of the majestic view. Jeju is so breathtaking. God who made this must be so magnificent. The sea is so beautiful. If heaven is much more beautiful than this, then I would like to go there. I must go there.
“So Mrs. Kim will come back before the summer ends. I am too old to run it. It’s so good of you to help your cousin manage his cafe,” Mrs. Byun said.
I believe Mrs. Byun is Yesung’s business partner on putting his café too. The other one, Mrs. Kim, is Yesung’s aunt from his father side. I am a cousin of his on the mother side. She’s the original manager but because she has to go to Japan till summer ends, I am called to be a substitute. I am so honored he gave me his trust to supervise it. Having trust on me, his Hotel and Restaurant Management student cousin, is one big deal for me. I wont blow this up. It’s his first cafe outside Seoul. I want him to be successful in every endeavor he is on.
“Oh, I love Jeju. Yesung oppa knows it.” I smiled. Who wouldnt love Jeju, right? I then turned to Mrs. Byun who’s driving. “So, managing a cafe entails...”
“Hardwork, perseverance and great relations with people.”
I am gratified. I am actually scared going here. I dont know how to manage a business, really. Though I read books about it, I know it would be hard if it’s the real thing.
We stopped in front of a cute building that is obviously a cafe. It’s in the middle of where tourists frequent. Good location.
I saw the name of the cafe.. Tortoise and Turtle. Seriously? I laughed inside my head.
We went inside and I saw many customers. I was surprised. I know Yesung oppa’s fans dont know that he has a cafe on Jeju. Well, it must be really because of the cafe then.
It was my first time in the cafe too. It’s bigger than what oppa owns at Seoul. The decorations and the structure are cozy and warm. No wonder there are many customers. A waitress saw Mrs. Byun and I then she smiled and greeted us, “Good afternoon Mrs. Byun and..”
“She’s Jaein, Yesung’s cousin, your new manager,” Mrs. Byun said sweetly.
Bomi, the waitress, bowed. “Good afternoon Manager Jaein.” She smiled at me before going back to work. Good thing, the employees have nametags on their uniforms. I wont have a hard time guessing their names then.
Their uniforms are good to look at too. Maroon polo blouse, black slacks and black apron around their waist. It looks professional. Mrs. Byun and I then made our way to the cafe kitchen past the cashier with Jiyoon, the cashier, greeting us.
I met Mr. Lee, the barista, which I believe is in his 30s, and Ilhoon, the cook, inside. Ilhoon looks like a little kid but seeing him whip up sandwiches, cupcakes and finger foods for the customers amazed me.
This is one cool cafe.
