Awkward Meeting
Meet My Boss
In the midst of the city goers walking to and fro the streets of Seoul, a dashing young lass stood out. With her black monochrome stroller and her hiking back pack, she looked very lost in translation. In her hand, she held a map of Seoul. She walked aimlessly, as she mumbled some names of the streets and alleyways she already passed.
"Hey! You lost?"
The voice was in english! She stopped in her tracks, and turned to the person who seemed to be calling her. "Yes, I think I'm--"
She could not believe what she was seeing. It was some sort of epiphany. If it wasn't, then she didn't know what it was called. Smoldering doe eyes. Perfect luscious lips. Hair to match a goddess. It might be an angel. She thanked God for this blessing.
"You're the new kid from LA, aren't you? Amber, right?"
Amber gulped and nodded.
"Cat got your tongue? Anyways, I was supposed to be your guide, but the traffic was bad. So I got a bit late. I apologize for my tardiness. Please don't tell him I'm late. Will you?" Amber's angel was momentarily fixing her hair and shrugging off dirt from her trench coat. All the while, she was staring at her, mouth agape and confused. She shook her head at the question.
"Good, 'cause the boss will be furious! He's so latched to you. And I'm the only choice he has since I know English. I'm sorry. Naturally, I'm the quiet type, but all of these problems he's been giving me--" She let out a huge sigh. Almost like it emerged out of and came out as a speech balloon; Something one can see in comic strips.
The tourist just grinned, and patted her back. Poor angel. She decided to tell her uncle to lie low a little.
Suddenly, there was a look of horror in the angel's face. She backed off from her touch and slapped her forehead.
"Oh my gosh! Mianhe! I sincerely apologize for what I've said. I mean that in a good way! He's just so busy. He's so smart and hardworking. Please, don't tell that to your uncle or he'll rip my head off--" She shut with her hand, and said in a small voice, "I'm going to stay quiet now."
A moment of silence ensued between the two of them.
She cleared her voice and what came out was unusually formal; flat and undistinctive from what she sounded awhile ago. "Miss Liu, I am Jung Soojung. You're guide for the day. I was requested by Mister Liu to accompany you whilst he is having a conference with his potential clients. He said he is truly sorry for the delay." She bowed cordially. It was as if her emotional outburst was out of naught.
Amber smiled her toothy grin again. "No, it's alright, Miss Jung. Sometimes my uncle tends to overwork himself a little. And I know you don't mean harm." Soojung lifted her head and a worried look still grew on her face.
"Really. We're okay." Amber said, emphasizing on the "okay" part.
"Really?" Soojung did this gorgeous smile that made Amber's feet wobble.
"Yes." She said in defeat.
"Okay."
"Okay."
"Errr-- There's a private car waiting at the corner of the street. If you could just follow me please." She walked (with her hips swaying in perfect struts) back to the perpetually white limo just a few steps away from Amber. She watched Soojung enter the limo in the passenger seat. "Miss Liu? Aren't you coming?" She heard her say.
Amber mentally berated herself from being so dazed. So dazed that she didn't notice that the chauffer had already taken his stroller and backpack, which left her with the darn street map.
She inhaled deeply and said, "Welcome back, Amber."
