A Rose For My Enemy

The Fight for the Throne

A/N: I'm sorry it's been so long since I updated! I hope you like this chapter! let me know what you think!

Skin paler than marble, dark eyelashes framing his closed eyes, Tao was more than beautiful when he was asleep. Jael couldn’t help but find him mesmerizing.

She slowly brought her hands to his cheeks, flinching at the iciness of his skin. He was always cold, but Jael felt he was colder when he was asleep. He rarely slept but when he did, he’d sleep for a while. Sometimes an entire day. Jael always made sure to stay up and look after him. It was the least she could do. He was always doing too much for her.

“Zitao…” she sighed, smoothing out the wrinkles on his forehead. He was constantly stressed, even when sleeping.

When Tao had told her how he was fighting for the crown against the other vampire prince. The silver haired girl couldn’t help but worry for her lover. She knew Tao would most likely exhort himself and would never come to her for help.

But this bothered her. She wanted to help Tao. She wanted to make his burden lighter, to ease his load.

That’s why she decided to do what she was planning to do. She was doing it for him. Jael repeated this to herself over and over again. She would not make herself feel guilty about helping her soulmate. She was doing the right thing. Right?

-

“This means a lot to me, Baekhyun. How can I ever repay you?”

The elf smiled, sipping the now stale coffee. The two had met up in the rundown café about an hour ago. Jael was looking for someone to perhaps, point her in the right direction. She hadn’t many friends among the creatures, but Baekhyun had proved to be a good one.

“It’s no problem. I’m not asking for anything in return. I told you I wanted to help; I never put a price on helping a friend.”

Jael shook her head; she would find a way to do something for the selfless elf, even if it took a while to do so.

Baekhyun chuckled at his friend’s stubbornness and changed the topic. “I’d rather you not go alone, where he lives isn’t exactly….a friendly neighborhood.”

“I’m perfectly fine by myself, Baek.”

“And I know this, you’re very strong. But I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if something happened to you. So just let me take you there, alright?”

The elf’s eyes twinkled a light green; he reached out and grabbed Jael’s hands as if to prove his sincerity. The vampire looked down at the pale hands grasping hers then looked back up into the soft green eyes. She knew Baekhyun wouldn’t take no for an answer.

Sighing, Jael squeezed Baekhyuns hands before sliding her own back into her lap. “Alright, but on two conditions.”

The elf’s eyebrows rose, waiting for her to continue.

“No one can know about this, and…..I’ll do the talking.”

-

“Here’s what you need to know: he’s name is sehun, he doesn’t show much expression so don’t expect it, and most importantly, he will want something in return for helping you. It might be small or big, I’m not sure what to expect. That’s enough info?”

Jael smiled reassuringly at Baekhyun, “more than enough. Are you coming in?”

She looked towards the house they were currently pulled in front of. It was extremely small and old looking. It looked abandoned but Jael knew he had to live here since Baekhyun said so. The elf never lied.

“Hhmmm….I’ll stand watch outside, alright? Scream if you need me.”

Jael stepped out of Baekhyun’s small car and slipped her hood over her silver hair. She knew this Sehun wasn’t necessarily dangerous, but she didn’t want to attract any unwanted attention.

“Aye captain, wish me luck.”

She could still hear Baekhyun chuckling as she closed the door.

She quickly made her way up to the house, stepping over the broken pavement. Her steps were light and silent, something she learned from Tao. Approaching the door, she tapped three times as Baekhyun had instructed and patiently waited for an answer.

Almost instantly, the door began to creak open. Slowly, Jael stepped inside, eyes quickly adjusting to the pitch black state of the room.

Looking around, the first thing she noticed was the bare amount of furniture in the room and the stale scent that lingered in the air. The hairs on her arm began to rise as she continued to walk further in the house.

“You can stop there.”

The voice was quiet but the suddenness startled Jael. She flinched at the sound of the door closing behind her.  She looked for the source of the voice and found him sitting at the small desk in the corner of the room.

“Sit.”

Jael hesistated, caught off guard by the monotone voice but sat in the only vacant chair in the room. The other was occupied by, who Jael figured was Sehun.

“Sorry for coming here without previously contacting you but I…”

“Stop,” the other interrupted, “I already knew you were coming, and I know why you came too.”

Jael tensed, she had a bad feeling about this guy. But she had to get over it; she had to do this for Tao.

“Well, then can you help me?”

Sehun had yet to turn around and face her; he seemed to be busy writing something. “Of course I can, but that’s not what’s important right now.”

Confused, Jael started to ask him what he meant.

“You ask too many questions. Tao’s in trouble, that’s all you need to know. Period.”

Valentina woke up to the smell of bacon and fried rice. Which was concerning, because she lived alone and had a blood drinker for a boyfriend.

She quickly tugged herself from her sheets, forgetting to put pants on and stumbled into the kitchen.

“Oh, you’re awake?” Luhan smiled at her as if him cooking bacon wasn’t the strangest thing she’d ever seen.

“Why are you cooking?”

She made her way to his side of the kitchen, managing to only suffer a few bumps and hits from the oncoming stationary furniture.

The vampire giggled at his clumsy pant less girlfriend, then brought his attention back to the sizzling bacon. “I can’t cook for my girlfriend?”

“I prefer my bacon to not be raw and soaking in blood. That might kill me, you know?”

Valentina snuck a peek over Luhan’s shoulder at the bacon, making sure she wouldn’t die from uncooked meat.

“I know how to cook, Val. I’m not dumb.”

The faerie shrugged and hoisted herself onto the counter. “Do you have bad news or something? You only do weird stuff like this when you feel guilty.”

Taking the bacon off the eye, Luhan promptly turned around and started to fix her plate.

“Here. Oh and good morning.” He smiled, and began to clean the mess he made.

“Thanks…”

Valentina knew Luhan was hiding something but she couldn’t deny the fact that her stomach was making way too much noise and she hadn’t eaten bacon in weeks.

She looked up to see Luhan making himself comfortable in the seat across from her, his blond hair swept back from his forehead. His normally caramel eyes were slightly tinted red; Valentina guessed he probably hadn’t had a meal in about three days.

“I have something to tell you….”

Pouting, the faerie gulped down her food. She was hoping she was wrong about the bad news.

“We’re going to have to cancel dinner tomorrow night.”

Dinner? Valentina wasn’t sure what the vampire was talking about. She continued chewing her food with a puzzled look on her face until she realized what he dinner he meant.

“Are talking about THE dinner? The one with your parents, where we tell them about us?”

Luhan nodded, looking down, suddenly captivated with the color of the counters.

“We’ve be planning this for weeks, Luhan! Weeks! We’ve been dating for two years now, don’t you think they should know?”

“I know, I know. Now is not a good time to tell him. Too much is going one.”

Pushing the rest of her food away from her, Valentina ran her fingers through her hair. “It’s…never the right time, Luhan. Everytime we plan to tell them, you make excuses!”

Aggravated, the upset faerie stood up from the table and started to angrily walk back to her room.

“Val, don’t be this way…”

The vampire quickly followed her, only to be stopped in his tracks as the faerie turned around. Her eyes were red and puffy, as the tears flowed down her cheeks. She roughly pushed him back.

“Just stop!” she choked on her sobs, as she tried desperately to look anywhere other than at Luhan, “I can’t take this anymore. I can’t hide for you forever. How do you think this makes me feel? That I can’t ever visit you and your parents because they don’t even know about me! Just admit it! They won’t let us be together! I know…ok, I know! I just….”

She slid to the floor, burying her face in her hands, “I just wanted to try. I thought they might try to like me, or like me eventually…. I want them to know about us…”

It broke his heart to see her crying. Knowing that he was the cause for it made it even worse. Luhan crouched down by the crying faerie, and tried to wrap his arms around her before she flinched and pushed him back.

That hit him harder, she never resisted him.

“Don’t…don’t touch me,” Valentina wrapped her arms around her knees, curling into a ball, “I think…you should leave.”

Luhan should have seen this coming. It was only a matter of time before she snapped. He knew it was his fault, but he just couldn’t bring himself to let his parents know yet. He was afraid they would try to hurt Valentina. He was sure he couldn’t live with himself if something happened to her.

He sighed, as he stood up from the flood. He looked down at his crying girlfriend, and could barely stop himself from picking her up and holding her. He knew he needed to leave. She needed time to herself, away from him. Luhan just hoped it wasn’t permanent.

“Wow..”

*clap*

“I’m impressed, I applaud the effort.”

*clap* *clap*

“You had enough guts to come all the way to my turf.”

Kris couldn’t help but chuckle at the stiff stance of the darker haired vampire. He was still as a statue and hadn’t said a word since he arrived.

“Who even let you in?”

Technically out, since they were in the garden. But that wasn’t the point. Kris had upstanding guards. They were smart and quick, they wouldn’t have let the bastard by. Especially since there was only one of him and quite a couple of Kris’s guards.

“You’re pretty quiet, huh?”

The silent vampire shifted over to the side of the garden where Kris was presently sitting at. The boy was quick, he’d give him that. He hadn’t even seen him move, only heard the rustling of the bush he was standing behind.

“I prefer to listen. Listeners have the upper hand.”

The raven haired vampire voice’s was quiet but fierce, obviously laced in confidence. Not one tone in his voice gave Kris the slightest hint of what the other vampire was feeling or what he was intending.

“What are you doing here?”

“I came to see what I’m up against….” The intruder looked Kris up and down, “I see it’s not much.”

Kris chuckled at the other’s insult. This vampire obviously had spunk. He imagined him to be a little more…uptight.

“I could say the same, Zitao.”

The other smirked, “So you’ve heard of me? How cute. I’m popular on this side of town?”

“Don’t get ahead of yourself.”

“Too late.”

He couldn’t believe this guy’s attitude. He was the supposed douchebag here, not him.

The other still hadn’t revealed himself yet. He was jumping around the bushes and trees of Kris’s garden. His voice was coming from in front of him, though.

“Not brave enough to show your face? I don’t blame you.” Kris smirked, slouching further down into the stone bench, “I’m not one to mess with.”

The statement had done exactly what Kris intended for it. In less than a second, Tao was on the bench beside him, his raven hair was crimped and messily flying everywhere. His eyes were dark, black even; his stare was more than unnerving. Kris was having trouble looking him in the eye.

“Neither am I.”

Kris was still at a loss for words, while Tao moved on to the next subject. “I’m here to let you know something. I felt sending a messenger was inadequate.”

Tao leaned behind Kris, and plucked a rose from the bush.  “You’ve heard of my recent uniting with my soulmate, correct?”

At the mention of the word, Kris came back to his senses. “Maybe.”

“Well you must know that means I have someone who I’m taking care of. She’s given me what one would call, a sense of responsibility.”

“Really now?” Kris feigned excitement.

The rose fell into Kris’s lap from Tao’s hand. It was now shriveled up and dead. The once red leaves were blackened and falling apart.

“I’ve come back to take what’s rightfully mine.”

“I have every right to the throne as you do, if not more.”

“Well, it’s my turn now.”

The blond vampire threw his head back and laughed. He couldn’t believe what he was hearing. “This is not how things work, Zitao. Things aren’t just handed to you. You take things if you want them.”

Suddenly, Tao was crouching in front of the other. Taking the dead rose from Kris’s lap, he stood and walked back to the bushes; not breaking eye contact with the blond vampire.

“Exactly.”

Kris could no longer see Tao but the other’s voice was still heard floating throughout the garden.

“Don’t under estimate me, Kris. It’ll be the end of you.”
