Vials and Lectures, but Will She Run Away?

The Fight for the Throne

A/N: So here is the second chapter! You get to find out a little bit more about Kai and Laeling's relationship :) let me know what you think? Enjoy!~

She couldn’t get him out of her head. All Laeling could think about lately, was Kai.

Humming to herself, she started searching for a distraction in her small condo. Thoughts of the younger vampire would only dig her deeper into the she was already trapped in.

But it was nearly impossible to keep the thoughts from making their way into her mind. She had just seen him the night before. The sweet memory of him running his fingers through her hair replayed over and over in her head.

All he talked about was his meeting with Tao, but the closeness in which he kept her was all she could think about.

Realizing the time, Laeling begin cleaning. It was something she did every night. It took her awhile but she didn’t mind.

She had only gotten done with the kitchen when she heard her cell phone ring from the living room.

“Hello?”

“Oh! I was afraid you weren’t going to answer!”

Laeling flinched, pulling the phone away from her ear.

“You don’t have to scream, Val. Why’d you call?”

Valentina huffed through the phone, initiating a fit of giggles from Laeling. “Nothing’s funny! Do I have to have a reason to call you?”

“Not necessarily, but you usually do anyways.”

“Perhaps. But anyways, I called to warn you.”

Laeling never liked these type of phone calls from Valentina. The faerie always tried to prevent bad things from happening to Laeling, but was almost always a moment too late.

“About what exactly?” The vampire laid out on her sofa waiting for her friend to continue.

“I received a vision last night. About you. You were running, fear b in your eyes.”

Laeling clenched the phone a little tighter, not sure what to make of what she heard. Valentina was a garden faerie. They were the only ones who had visions, with the aid of plants of course. The futures they saw were mostly glimpse and images, not a whole lot. But Valentina was very talented and often her visions would last for a few minutes which was very rare for a faerie her age.

“That doesn’t do much to warn me, Lae. You must have an idea of what I was running from.”

“Not what but who. You know who I’m talking about. It’s about time you left him before he crosses the line. I’m pretty sure he already has. But you’re still with him, so I must be wrong.”

Laeling sighed. This wasn’t the first time the faerie had tried to make her break up with her boyfriend. Daehyun had a slight temper and often would take his anger out on Laeling. The faerie couldn’t understand why the vampire was still with the brute.

But Laeling understood. She couldn’t leave Daehyun. Yes, he wasn’t particularly the sweetest warlock out there, but he provided for her. He was there for her when she had nowhere else to turn. Leaving him would be betraying him.

“You know I can’t, Val. He’s done too much for me.”

“I told you I called to warn you, not force you to do something you don’t want to do. But please…..think about it? I’m worried about you.”

Sincerity and worry were laced through Valentina’s voice. Laeling couldn’t help but smile sadly at her friend’s effort to protect her.

“If I said I would, would you sleep peacefully tonight?”

“All I can do is try.” Laeling could hear the smile in her voice before she hung up.

Not even five minutes after the strange phone call, Laeling could hear the rustling of keys outside the door.

Daehyun was home.

The door slammed shut, the loud noise echoing throughout their small condo. Laeling tensed as she heard his heavy foot stomps down the hall. He stopped at the end of the foyer, his blaring gaze found hers. The vampire visibly cowered in front of the angry warlock. His stare sending shivers down her spine.

His voice dripped in venom, “You want to tell me why you weren’t home when I got here last night?”

-

It had been at least a week since Jael and I have done anything. Pertaining to . I could truly say I had never been more ually frustrated in my life.

Can you blame me? Before Jael, if I had the need to relax I would just go out and find a random human. and a meal. I liked killing two birds with one stone.

Jael still hadn’t gotten over the dispute from before. Her way of solving this was not letting me get some. I was positive she was expecting me to crawl back at any moment, demanding her to let me have my way with her. She would only say yes if I would spill. I knew this because I had already came groveling back but I hadn’t spilled yet. So that meant not having my way with Jael.

I found it a little more than frustrating.

I made my way out of my shower, grumbling at the fact that I had to resort to pleasing myself. I hadn’t had to do that in centuries. Centuries. This girl had no idea what she was doing to me.

I open the bathroom door to see Jael sitting comfortably, with a book in hand, in our shared bed. A bed that was only used for sitting comfortably and sleeping. Well, only in the last week.

“When will your sister be here?” she asked, not looking up from the oh-so-interesting book.

It was the longest sentence she had spoken to me in a while and it was about my sister.

“She said she’ll be here in an hour or so.”

She slowly nodded while pulling her long hair from out of her face. I’ve suggested tons of times that she gets it cut, at least layered. But she insists to let it keep growing; she says that I’ll miss it. She’s right.

It was hard to admit, but I adored everything about her. Even her flaws. Everything that was her, made her perfect to me. It hurt me, her being upset with me, but it was necessary. I didn’t want her getting mixed up in this drama. The safest people are the people who know nothing. I would keep her safe for as long as I could.

I couldn’t let her in on my plans because then Kris would have a reason to get to her. I would not allow that to happen. When the time comes, I’ll tell her what it is she wants to know; what no one knows.

“I was beginning to think you were going to ignore me forever!”

Valentina hadn’t changed one bit, she was still as loud and boisterous as ever. But it seemed she became even more beautiful. If that was possible.

“I do a lot of things I’m not necessarily proud of, but I don’t betray my family.”

I couldn’t help but speak bluntly. I was allowing her in my place, but I wouldn’t let her forget that she betrayed me.

She visibly flinched, but kept going as though it didn’t faze her.

“So where is this darling girl I’ve heard so much about?” Valentina had a thing for playing with her hair when she was nervous. She was doing it now. I wasn’t too sure why she was so anxious about meeting Jael, but I wouldn’t question it.

Not long after, Jael made her way around to the living space, smiling as she did so. Another thing about the bond, we could call each other with our minds. This nonverbal communication was a blessing and curse. More of curse than I would like.

“Nice to meet you.” Jael's silk-like voice didn’t go unnoticed, not even to Valentina.

My sister eyes brightened at the sight of Jael. My lover was more than beautiful, something I prided myself with. I have good taste. Jael was equally infatuated with Valentina. She previously had told me she loved red hair, which so happen to be the color of my sister’s hair.

“And nice to meet you! Tao, you didn’t tell me that she was so pretty!”

“Well what did you expect? I don’t settle for less.”

At this comment, I promptly received a slap on the back of my neck from Jael.

“Tao failed to let me know he had such a beautiful sister!”

“He’s dumb like that.”

Oh so it’s ‘slap Tao and call him dumb’ day. How fortunate for me.

“So…..are you also a vampire?” Jael was now basically hanging off of the chair, as far away as possible from me. I could see in Valentina’s eyes that she knew exactly what was going on. I could never hide anything from her.

My sister started to fiddle with her ruffled skirt as she searched for a way to tell Jael that we weren’t related. But that was something I had already done, “She knows, Val.”

She visibly relaxed at the thought of getting to skip that topic. “Well then no, I’m not. I’m a faerie, a garden faerie to be more specific. Has Tao let you in on basic races between our people?”

Jael nodded, “Yes but he’s never told me what you are, so I guessed you were a vampire too.”

“I can see why you would think that.” Valentina reached for the dead rose I had so elegantly put on my coffee table. First, she got a good whiff of the petals, smelling the death that only she could smell. Then she kissed the same petal with a gentle touch. Jael watched with fascination as the petal regained its original bright red color and bloomed. And I watched Jael with longing, it had been a while since I saw such an emotion plastered on her face.

“That’s amazing…..” Jael was still caught up in the little trick Valentina had shown her.

“It’s only a small feat, I can do much more. But I don’t see the reason in showboating.”

Being around Valentina and seeing her interacting with Jael made me really miss my sister. She was the only one in my family who didn’t nag about focusing on the throne. No words could describe how hurt I was when I discovered she was with Luhan. But maybe I had overreacted?

I suddenly got up from the sofa. The girls only stopped their bantering to look up at me for a second. Then they continued without a question. I took this opportunity to get some fresh air and try to sort out the confusion that was plaguing my mind.

-

“I guess I better give this to you before he comes back in.” Valentina hopped off the chair and sat down by Jael on the sofa.

The new vampire was even more striking up close. Her eyes were a mixture of purples, pinks, and greys, labeling her as a psychic vampire. Her hair was unnaturally silver; it seemed to catch every light it came in contact with.

“Give me what?” Jael couldn’t stop the look of confusion from sliding onto her face.

The faerie stuck her hand in her bag and presented a small black velvet case to Jael.

“Open it! Quick, before he comes back in!”

Jael undid the latch on the case and was surprised when a small black folded piece of paper fell out. Ignoring the paper, the vampire found that inside the case was a small vial, about two inches long, filled with a bright pink liquid.

The vampire rolled the vial around in her hand and started to open it to get a good whiff. Valentina stopped her just in time.

“No, no, no,” said the faerie, with a vigorous shake of her head making her curly red hair bounce around, “I wouldn’t if I were you. That stuff is pretty potent. One taste or just a whiff and you’re ready to go.”

Jael looked even more puzzled, “go?”

“Don’t ask question, just read the instructions. But do that later.”

Valentina picked up the discarded folded piece of paper and handed it to Jael.

“Why are you giving this,” gesturing to the vial in her hand, “to me?”

“I know all about the little dispute between you and Tao.”

The vampire’s eyes visibly dimmed after hearing the reminder. She dropped her head, avoiding Valentina’s knowing gaze.

“No worries, all your problems will be solved by this little vial right here,” the faerie smirked, amused by her own devious plan, “I made it especially for Tao.”

-

Going on week two of staying at his parent’s place, Kris was beginning to dreadfully miss his own place. He would give anything to be lying in his comfy bed in his even more comfy mansion.

The only good thing about this place was the food. Beautiful palace girls left and right. Kris couldn’t get enough.

Still lost in his thoughts of girls, Kris barely caught the sound of his parents coming in the dining room.

“I see you’re taking some time to reflect?”

The prince nearly jumped out of his skin at the sound of his mom’s voice. She silently sat down on the right hand side of his father, who was sitting at the opposite end of the table from Kris. The young vampire still couldn’t get over the fact he hadn’t even heard them come in.

“Well, I’m going to be a king, mother. Kings think before they act. I plan to do a lot of acting so I need to do just as much thinking.” Kris was proud of the way he presented his case to his parents.

His father chuckled, “Yes, but sometimes, son, a king needs to think fast so that he can act fast. You’ve been thinking rather slowly.”

The present king raised his finger and a servant quickly came in with two glasses of fresh blood. Kris knew that it was fresh because he could smell the delectable aroma from where he was seated. His parents always got the best blood in the house. The prince didn’t think it was fair at all.

“Not every king has had the pleasure of thinking as fast as you, father.”

When in doubt, flatter him.

Kris’s father, the present king, was a very strong and ruthless man. He acquired the respect he had from his subjects with brute force. But that was centuries ago. He saw no use for violence if none of his subjects questioned him and no opposing forces rose against him. King Seunghyun, better known as King T.O.P was not one to play with and his people respected him for that.

“You may be right, but you can give it a try.”

His mother cleared while Kris sighed. He knew what was coming. It was a common lecture he received from the golden haired queen.

“We know of your plans, Yifan. Luhan will only fail you and once he fails you, what will you do? You need a plan of action. You cannot sit on the sidelines and have your incapable brother do the work for you. The work will not get done.”

Cocking his head to the side, Kris was confused. This wasn’t the regular lecture of getting his life together. How did they know of his plans with Luhan? And why was his mother saying such things about his brother.

It wasn’t a secret in the kingdom that his mother was not fond of her oldest son, but no one had an idea why that was. Queen Chaerin was known to be fierce and relentless, so no one questioned her about the way she was with Luhan. But that didn’t mean Kris was okay with it. He might have not been really close with his older brother but he still respected and loved him. He couldn’t understand why his mother couldn't too.

“Why do you feel that way? I believe Luhan will get the job done.” Kris knew it was hopeless to question his mother but he tried anyway.

The queen slowly stood up from her seat and stood behind the king, placing her long fingers on his shoulder. “We shall see, Yifan. Prove to us that you are capable to rule over the kingdom by properly ruling over your brother.”

The king nodded his head in agreement, while his mother raked her fingers through his father’s striking blue hair. “If you fail us, or if he fails you. There will be consequences.”
