Hiya! This fanfic was supposed to be posted together with Tug Of War, The Black Phoenix, The Thread Of Circumstance, Crazy Little Thoughts and The Spinster’s Curse. But then, I thought handling six fanfics at a time would be tough so I decided to delay posting it. I then planned to post this instead after TBP’s finished, keke. I’m just posting this in advance. This will be just a short one, though, keke.

Foreword

PROLOGUE

O=O=O

“Oppa!” a girl’s crying voice called out. “Hyunnie oppa!”

An eight year old Choi Seunghyun straightened up and looked up ahead. He frowned upon seeing a girl running towards his direction, crying. Not too far behind the girl, a boy, same age of the girl was laughing heartily. The girl and the boy were both six years old and although he was two years older than them, he had no problem getting along with the younger two.

Upon reaching him, the girl hid behind his back and tug on his shirt, still crying. “What happened?” he asked her.

“Oppa!” the girl wailed, looking up at him. “Ugly Jiyong is bullying me again!” she wailed louder, pointing a finger at the six-year old Jiyong, who, as of the moment was still laughing like there’s no tomorrow.

“Hahahahahahahahahaha!” Jiyong laughed even louder, making the little bawl out loud. Seunghyun turned to the girl and patted her head, comforting her while giving a glare at the other boy. Upon seeing this, the boy stopped laughing. “Ya, stupid girl!”

“Ya!” the girl wailed. “I’m not stupid!”

“Yes, you are!”

“No!”

“You are stupid and a weakling! You’re also a flirt!”

“Kwon Jiyong!” Seunghyun warned.

Jiyong pouted then bowed his head. “Mian. . .” he whispered and walked up to the girl with bowed head. He had his hands behind him and he was looking very regretful. “I’m sorry.”

The little girl stopped crying and wiped her tears away with her shirt. “You should be!”

“I’m really sorry,” Jiyong said again. “Friends?” he asked, stretching out a hand towards her. The girl hesitated and looked up at Seunghyun first, as if asking for his opinion. The latter gave the little girl a little smile, hesitant as well but he does not really have any rights to order the girl whom she should be friends with or not. They were just neighbors anyway.

“Okay,” the girl nodded and accepted Jiyong’s hand. As she did, his face suddenly changed into a mischievous one. With his free hand, he pulled something out from his pocket and placed the thing on the girl’s palm. The girl’s eyes widened upon seeing the cockroach moved, it fluttered its wings and flew towards her face, making her scream at the top of her lungs.

“Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!” Jiyong laughed as the girl started running away in fear. “Bwahahahahahahahaha!!!”

“Ya!” Seunghyun faced him, pushing his shoulders in irritation. “Why do you keep on bullying her? Stop it already!”

The other boy grimaced. “I bully anyone I like!” he childishly said. “I don’t want to be like a gay, like you!”

“Who said I’m gay?” Seunghyun demanded, feeling angry.

“I did!” Jiyong defiantly returned. “You always go looking after that stupid girl just like a mother! You’re a gay!”

“Take that back!”

“No, I won’t!”

“Take that back or else. . . or else I’ll. . .”

“You’ll what? Go to your Mommy? Aww. . . .” the other taunted. “Poor Mommy’s boy. . .  aww. . .”

“Or else I’ll punch you!” he firmly said, making the smirk on Jiyong’s face go away. For a moment, Seunghyun thought that he was able to scare the fearless bully of their place, Kwon Jiyong, who at such a young age caused headache to everyone already. But then, the great bully just started laughing again, laughing at him.

A scream then stopped Seunghyun from really fighting with Jiyong. He looked around and saw the girl, face down on the ground. “Sandara!” he called out and ran to her direction. The girl was crying out loud again as she pushed herself up in a sitting position.

“O-oppa!” she wailed. “I. . . I tripped! It hurts. . . . ! My knee hurts!”

Seunghyun went down on his knee. “Let me see,” he said, inspecting her wound.

“Omo!” Jiyong suddenly exclaimed. “Quickly, quickly! She has to be brought to the hospital! If not, her feet will be chopped off from infection!”

Sandara suddenly paled.

“Don’t listen to him,” Seunghyun whispered. “Your wounds are not too deep so there’s no need for your feet to be chopped off.”

“But. . . I don’t have to go to the hospital, do I?”

“Ah. . . I’ll pray that you’ll survive this, Sandara,” Jiyong solemnly said but Seunghyun could just hear the bullying tone underneath it.

“O-oppa!” the girl exhaled in fear. “I don’t want to die yet!”

“Ah, poor Sandara. . .” Jiyong went on, shaking his head.

“Don’t listen to him,” Seunghyun said again. “You’re not going to die but you might undergo an. . . an operation or something. . .”

“Will that take the wounds away?”

“Yes,” Seunghyun confidently said. “Come here, ride on my back, I’ll take you home so that your Mommy and Daddy can take you to the hospital at once.”

“Both of you are dumb!” Jiyong then blurted out. “They’re just scratches!”

“Oh yeah?” Sandara retorted. “That’s not what you said a while ago!”

“I was just joking!” he said then went closer to them, looking at her knee. “Yep, just a scratch, no big deal.”

And then, all of the sudden, he grabbed the little doll that the girl was carrying and started running away from them, cackling. The girl started wailing again. Seunghyun then ran after him. They went in circles but Jiyong was too fast.

“Kwon Jiyong, give that back!” Seunghyun called out.

“I don’t want to!” Jiyong answered. “I’m going to give this to my dog!”

“Give that back!” he called out again.

“Get it from me then!”

An explosion suddenly disturbed the silence. It was so loud that even the ground shook from its intensity. They both stopped and looked around. Another explosion came and then there were loud screams and cries. Seunghyun abandoned chasing after Jiyong and went back to where Sandara was. He saw him still sitting on the ground, looking up ahead. Upon reaching her, he saw that her eyes were wide from fear. As he followed her gaze, he felt fear himself. It was so intense that he felt as if he was going to faint. Houses were on fire, people were running here and there, men in suits with guns were going down from the sky.

Without really knowing what to do, he grabbed Sandara’s hand and started running, pulling her to the abandoned building a few meters away. An explosion suddenly sounded near them, making the girl scream. He docked around the corner and pushed the girl inside the rotten entryway of the abandoned building and scooted down, bringing the girl’s head to his chest.

“Oppa. . . . what’s. . . happening?” the girl cried. He did not answer. He could not answer. He was too afraid to speak as well, that he could even feel himself trembling from fear.

It went on and on for hours. It was actually quite a miracle that he and the girl were not discovered and somehow, were still alive. He could not remember when the explosions stop. But when it did, the nagging fear in his chest never left him.

And a few minutes later, he then realized why the nagging fear never left him. He instantly knew what happened upon seeing burned bodies being gathered in one place. Just as he turned, he saw some people carrying two bodies from his house.

“Oppa. . .” the little girl said. “I want to go home, take me home. . .”

He was not really a brave person but he somehow felt as if he needs to be responsible for the girl. He gave her hand a squeeze and started heading towards the direction of her house. But then, the same scenario greeted him.

“Oppa. . . I want my Mommy and Daddy. . .”

He could not say anything.

“Oppa. . . where are they?”

“They’re dead,” a boy’s voice came from behind them. They both whirled around at the same time. “They’re gone,” Jiyong went on.

Seunghyun was surprised with what the other boy looked like. He had dark soothes all over his face, his arms and clothes. He had a mild burn on his arm and the side of his lower lip seemed to be bleeding. Even through all that, he was able to notice that the boy was holding Sandara’s doll quite tightly in his hand.

“What do you mean?” Sandara asked.

“They’re dead,” he said. “They left you already; they’re not coming back anymore. . .”

“Y-ya. . .” the girl said in a trembling voice. “Don’t say that! They’re not gone are they, Oppa? They’re still here, right?”

Seunghyun could not answer.

“O-oppa. . .?”

He could not look at her. “It’s true. . . they left you already. . .”

“Y-you’re lying!” she cried. “I hate you! You and Jiyong are bullying me now! I don’t like you anymore! You’re not my Oppa!”

And she ran away.

He looked for her everywhere. But when he found her, she was already being taken to an orphanage located in the city with the other kids her age and younger than her. He wanted to go with her but according to the older people, he will be sent to a different orphanage.  He tried to talk to the girl but the girl didn’t even look at him anymore. With defeated shoulders, he watched the vehicle she was on disappear from view.

And when it was his turn to be transported to his orphanage, he saw the older people chasing after Jiyong as he tried to escape. The latter it seemed, would be sent to a different orphanage as well because when those people in uniforms caught him, he was placed in a different vehicle.

Even if it has been ten years, Seunghyun could not seem to forget that particular night, especially now that a gun was just fired. The sound of it reminded him of that night. The police cars were getting nearer already but he did not feel any fear. As he stood there on the rails of the bridge, a small smile curved his lips as he dived down to the river. He quickly removed his jacket, his mask, and his pants. But he never let go of the two black bags that he was holding as he swam and swam and swam. He was almost out of breath when he saw someone swimming towards his direction with an oxygen mask. He could help but smile as he’d just completed another job.

They were hauled up in a boat with the size of a yacht a while later. Upon seeing the look on the others’ faces, Seunghyun could not help but laugh. “What are you looking at?” he laughingly asked.

“You really are the best thief!”

And they all laughed.
