HANA

Hana plopped herself on her bed as she rested on her own room.

Yuri just left after bringing her back home, and she insisted that she’ll just go to school alone and ask their driver to bring her, because the alternative was Yuri going back and forth to their house to and to hers, and she doesn’t want Yuri to do that. She wanted Yuri to have ample time for herself as well. And although reluctantly, Yuri agreed to it.

As she stared at her bedroom ceiling, her mind was going in circles as she went over what happened last night. She had definitely been more relaxed and comfortable with Yuri, unlike their previous conversations that were full of awkwardness. She remembered the sulky look on Yuri’s face, and the smile that she received after she sat beside the said girl. It was a good thing that she was alone, and no one could hear her or see her, or read her thoughts right now.

She knew that it was just her imagination, but her body still felt warm from where Yuri had held it the whole night. She couldn’t believe that in this one single night, all of the awkwardness that she felt towards her childhood friend was gone. She also couldn’t believe that she saw her mama with Yuri’s parents. And she couldn’t help but giggle at the thought of their family getting closer. She doesn’t know why, but she really feels so happy because of it.

She smiled a little bit more to herself as she thought of how warm her Aunt Sana had hugged her. She could see that Yuri inherited both of her parent’s good qualities. She was happy to finally meet them formally, and she could already see herself spending more time with Yuri’s family, just like how Yuri’s mom requested.

Being with Yuri made her feel… strong, needed. Happy— like things were the way they were supposed to be. Like she belongs in Yuri’s orbit.

As the second ticks by, she couldn’t help but imagine many more days spent with Yuri, a never-ending cascade of them. She knows that there’s nothing permanent in life, and that their life could go very differently any minute, but she just wanted to be worthy of Yuri’s attention.

She remembered how relaxed she felt when they arrived at Yuri’s home. And how Yuri’s mom’s welcome hug warmed her heart. She remembered waiting for their friends to arrive one by one while Yuri bragged about the different telescopes around, saying that her parents love watching the stars and the moon. And hoped that someday, they could also study together about them too.

She remembered feeling sulky because Yuri just wouldn’t want to wear the onesies that she brought. She even made sure that they will use the same color, but she accepted that she should’ve just told Yuri about it beforehand instead of surprising her with it. And then she remembered how happy she felt when Yuri finally accepted the clothes. She remembered kissing her by the cheeks due to happiness. Something that she normally does to her friends, but feels different when it’s with Yuri.

Then she recalled how Yuri was sulking because of Jiyeon. She didn’t think that Yuri would think badly about her talking to Jiyeon, but she is with her because it has been a couple of days since they talked alone, and their topic was all about school activities, nothing in particular that Hana was able to remember vividly. But she felt that Jiyeon was really all smiles that night, and she knew that Jiyeon was about to ask her to sit together, so Hana beat her to it and told her that she would be sitting beside Yuri tonight.

She also remembered how comfortable she felt leaning on Yuri’s shoulder and just sitting together without actually saying anything much. She remembered her friends bickering about how stupid the boy is on the movie, and how the girl was better off without him. She remembered feeling Yuri’s chuckles through her shaking shoulder and Hana couldn’t help but feel happy and content.

The night was indeed pure chaos and fun, since this is the first time that both circles of friends gathered together. All of them had fun, and were able to get to know each other more because of it.

She also remembered how serious Yuri’s face was when she asked her about choosing between her and Jiyeon, and although she somehow knew that Yuri wanted her to be picked, Hana just can’t say it out loud, and promised herself that she would just show it on her actions instead. She wants to reciprocate the feeling that Yuri was able to make her feel nowadays. She just knows that whatever happens, Yuri will always have her back. And she promises herself that she would be that for Yuri too.

The following morning, she woke up on the same cushion that she slept in, wrapped in a warm blanket with Yuri sitting beside her. She also remembered how dazzling Yuri’s smile was when she greeted her good morning. Then she realized that they are the only ones left behind and all their friends were gone. Her parents sent her off, and told her to come back soon, which made her smile.

She stood up with a smile on her face as she sent a quick good morning message to her friends, before entering the bathroom to quickly shower and prepare for school.

When she went downstairs, she saw her brother DoHyun chatting with their mom happily.

She ran towards her brother and hugged her fiercely.

“How was the night out?” DoHyun asked her as he took another bite of his toast.

“It was good! Yuri’s family was very welcoming. Although I’m still not sure why mama talked to Yuri’s parents.” Hana frowned a little bit.

“Well, honey. You are this family’s princess, don’t you remember? So your mama felt that she wanted to make sure that you’re in good hands.” Her mom explained. “You don’t need to worry, we know that Yuri’s a good kid.”

Hana took her seat at the table, just as her mom placed food on her plate along with the milk partnered with it.

“Oppa! How’s your date with Mirai-unnie?” Hana asked, changing the topic, then she remembered something. “Oppa! Oppa! I just learned that one of my schoolmates has already been in a relationship since last year. Can you believe it?”

Her mom and brother chuckled at her excitement.

“I think that’s normal, princess. As long as it won’t affect their grades, and as long as it gives them inspiration to do better.” DoHyun replied. “Are you entertaining any suitors?” He asked with a raised brow.

“Psh, as if. They know who you are! Plus, Yuri’s been pestering the people around me lately, it’s getting annoying.” Hana complained, although it was not really that deep. She normally just laughs it off when Yuri is being protective. She doesn’t think much of it.

“What is she telling them, honey?” Sana curiously asked.

“Uhm…,” Hana started as she swallowed a spoonful of pancake. “She just sometimes tells them that I’m busy, or that we’ll go somewhere even if we really don’t have any plans. Sometimes she asks her friends to act as bodyguard if she’s going somewhere or something.”

Her mom and brother exchanged glances and smiled, then her brother said, “Wait till mama hears about that. She will flip.”

“Why?”

“Nevermind that, honey.” Sana said, “But let me ask you something… is that gesture okay with you?”

Hana thought for a moment, because honestly the question doesn’t cross her mind. She just normally goes with whatever Yuri’s antics are. “I don’t mind, besides there are some students who were really too excited to talk to me, and sometimes it’s annoying because I’m just a normal student too, you know?” Hana even rolled her eyes.

“I guess, Yuri’s doing a good job at keeping them at bay?” Sana followed up.

“I don’t know about that.” Hana frowned, because this is the first time that she thought about it like that. “I still do what I want to do, and talk to whoever I want to. I don’t know why Yuri’s being like that.” she said truthfully.

DoHyun-oppa chuckled once more, but Hana paid him no mind. She realizes that DoHyun would not tell her the reason anyway, so she didn’t bother to ask.

She was just glad that she can talk openly about her feelings to anyone in her family.

She can’t imagine only relying on her friend’s comments and advice, because all of them are the same age, and they don’t know any better. Hana also knows that as much as she doesn’t agree with her parent’s decisions most of the time, her parents just want the best of her, and that they always ask her what she wants so that they can compromise.

And for that she’s really thankful.

She’s also happy that her parents approve of her friendship with Yuri, and she couldn’t ask for anything more at the moment.

“Today’s the election, right?” DoHyun asked.

“Yup. I’m nervous.” Hana sighed. “What if I lose?”

“Well, then it’s their loss. I went to one of your speeches—”

“You did??” Hana asked loudly, because she never knew that her brother watched her.

DoHyun chuckled, “Yes, I did. And I am truly impressed by your platform and all of your plans. Jia was also very knowledgeable about leadership, so your tandem is the best option if the student body wants to have a better year.” He said, and Hana could feel that his comment was genuine. Her brother babies her all the time, but he’s always truthful to her in terms of criticisms. “Anyway, I gotta go. I need to be early today.”

DoHyun stood up, and kissed the top of Hana’s head. “I love you, princess.” then moved to her mom’s side. Her mom’s arms were wide open and DoHyun walked in on the embrace.

“Uhm! My baby boy!” Sana said as she hugged her eldest fiercely, “I love you so much. Take care of Mirai, okay?”

“Will do, mom! As soon as you release me.” DoHyun jokes.

Hana will always be thankful that she’s born in this family, and she wouldn’t trade them for the world.
