"Nurse Park, you're in charge of Mr. Wan in room 201 for today. I don't think he has much time left," Head Nurse Lee ordered, a look of sympathy displayed across her face as she handed me a chart. "Understood." I nodded, taking the chart from her hand and opened it. On the front page it read: Patient's name: Robert Wan.  Age: 73  Illness: Liver Cancer.
Sad but not uncommon, most of the patients I've tended in the past were all deceased shortly after. During that time when I was 18, I had a major accident which nearly killed me. After I survived, I decided to dedicate my whole life to helping others by becoming a nurse. Despite the many people that I've aided, I still couldn't prevent them from dying, and dying is indeed a part of life. This, I've already acknowledged and there's not much I could do about it.

After reviewing the chart, I quickly walked down the hallway to room 201. As I arrived in front of the room, I took a deep breath, knocked, and entered lightly while closing the door behind me. "Hello Mr. Wan, how are you feeling today?" I greeted the elderly man lying on the bed with tubes and wires attached to his body and nostrils. He was breathing heavily and half awake, yet he was still able to gasp a word or two out in response to my question. "Pain all over, terrible." I turned away, trying to hide the obvious frown that was now present across my face. "Did your son come today?" I quickly changed subject, hoping to steer him away from the pain. "No but maybe later." He gasped. Seeing how he was short of breath, I decided not to ask any further and focused on documenting his vitals. I sure hope his son can make it on time.

Outside the window, the sun had already set, marking the end of another day and the beginning of another night. I walked over and closed the blind, "It's already night time, your son...Omo! you scared me!" I turned around only to discovered there was another man standing beside the patient's bed, which startled me. He was a young man, probably around 20, and very mysterious. He had dark medium hair length that covered his forehead and partly swept to the side. He was staring down at the patient intensely, his right hand clutching of what appeared to be a weirdly designed flashlight. The elderly man did not seem to notice him there and had drifted back to his slumber. It was strange that I didn't hear him when he came in, he must've been very quiet.

"Well then I'll leave you two alone, I'll be outside if you need anything." I said, feeling a bit uneasy at the presence of the young man. It's probably his grandson, though I don't see much resemblance. I quickly walked out the room and closed the door. What a weird guy. As I decided to head towards the lounge to grab a cup of water, I heard the sound of feet shuffling followed by the sound of kids yelling. I turned around and saw a family walking in fast pace, trying to look for a certain room. They suddenly stopped in front of Mr. Wan's room. "I hope dad's ok." the man spoke to his wife, and she immediately put a hand on his shoulder.

"Uh, are you Mr. Wan's family?" I asked out of curiosity.
"Yes we are his only family" the man replied, looking distraught and tired. His only family? Then who was the guy I saw earlier?
The man took a deep breath and opened the door, his family followed shortly behind and into the room.
"Hi dad I'm sorry we're late. Dad? hey dad...DAD?! Oh no dad no, answer me! Wake up DAD!" I heard the man yelled and quickly ran in. He was indeed flatlined so I quickly rushed to get help and called the doctors. When the doctors arrived, they pronounced Mr. Wan dead.

While the hospital staff were busy offering condolences to the grief-stricken family, I was more occupied with a different matter. On the table next to the patient's bed was the weirdly designed flashlight that belonged to the young man earlier. I quickly picked it up before anyone else noticed and walked to the lounge. I couldn't help but wonder how that young man could possibly walked out of that room without me or anyone else knowing. He was indeed very mysterious, who was he? Unsure as to who that could possibly be, I tossed the flashlight into my purse and walked back to work, not knowing that the flashlight was emitting a strange light from within my purse, signaling a forlorn omen that will forever change my fate...
