Chapter 6

You found a way

Nana’s POV

The day went by pretty fast and there were no signs of Kris nor Chanyeol. I couldn’t help but wonder where they were. Were they together? That’s impossible, I thought. Kris and Chanyeol have rivalry going on and to God knows since when. They couldn’t stand each other for a minute, let alone an entire day. On the other hand, I couldn’t believe I agreed to tutor Kris. No matter how difficult it is to resist him, I ended up accepting his request. Or did I just find a way to get to know Kris more? I hate how he can make me do things which I’m usually against with. I’m not some type of girl who just accepts anyone’s request without anything getting in return.

Right after class, I immediately went to the coast. The place was already a full house when I arrived. I can easily spot the foreigners from all over the world. I made my way to the personnel room and the senior staff introduced me to the juniors. She also explained my duties for a four-hour shift. I would be waiting tables for the mean time as I haven’t had a proper training yet. I got myself familiar with the policies first. I have no idea how my first day will go, but nonetheless, I’m willing to try it. When I was in Korea, I was just a school-home,home-school person. Dad never allowed me to go outside the premises of our house or school unless he told me to do so. I had never tried to disobey him, uhm yeah may be once, but after getting beat up for disobedience, I never had the guts to try it again.

I studied myself in the mirror after changing into my work clothes. It felt new to me, well the fact that it’s new, but whatever. All this Cali life is new to me. I also noticed my skin getting a little tan, and I kind of liked it.

“Nana, do you mind getting out there now? The number of customers are getting out of hand” My senior entered the room and asked.

“Yeah Yeah sure. Just a minute” I quickly packed my stuff and left.

I was surprised as to how much people have come ever since I got in. It’s jampacked. I looked at my watch finding It’s just five forty-five.

I have managed to gather and deliver orders from time to time. Satisfied customers gave me tips and it made me so much happy. (Yes, small things make me really happy) while others just went on their way. How ungrateful. I figured waiting tables is not my strong suit, but I could atleast give it a try. The endless calls for waitresses made me cringe, I was getting tired from going back and forth the counter. Yah, Nana. It’s only your first day and you’re complaining now? You’re not gonna last.

“Waitress??” I looked at the direction of a stunning lady. She has a long black hair and her distinct features just complimented her overall appearance. I envied her for a second. When I reached her table, the lady eyed me suspiciously as if she knew me, but then she saw my name plate and just shrugged.

“Good evening Maam, Welcome to the coast. May I take your order?” This line has got me going on for the evening, and I didn’t bother improvising.

“I’d like to have the usual” I was having second thoughts to ask her because the hell, who orders for her usual at a new waitress?

              “Uhm. I’m sorry?”

“I said I’d like to have my usual. Are you deaf or something?” This lady is starting to get on my nerves. I calmed myself inside.

              “I’m sorry I’m new here” I defended.

“Then get me someone who knows my usual!” She raised her voice. People looked at our direction and I couldn’t help but feel embarrassed. I’d like to scold the lady for being inconsiderate of me, but then I remembered, I’m just a waitress and customers are always right.

“Okay Maam. Excuse me for a while” With that I walked away from her. I’m sure she rolled her eyes at me the minute I left her. I clenched my fist, barely holding it.

“Raina? Do you know that girl? She claimed to have her usual.” Raina glanced at the lady’s direction.

“Oh. That’s Krystal. It’s Sir Dong wook’s niece. She’s a , let me handle her” I sighed in relief. At least I wasn’t the only one who finds her .

In a matter of minutes, Raina came back with her order. I took a note of her usual just because I might run into her again and orders for her usual which is actually stupid. It’s a good thing to not be dumb in front of her. I fixed her order and built myself some courage to deliver it to her. I walked towards her and carefully handed out her margarita, but I wasn’t too careful. The glass slipped of my hand and fell on the table spilling all the contents at her making her stand up in an instant.

“Yahh!!!!!” She shrieked at me. That hurt my ears a lot.

“I’m really sorry” I reached out for my hand towel and wiped her dress, however; she just shoved my hands away

“What are you doing? Can’t you see you’ve done enough damage already?” She snatched the towel from my hand and wiped the spilled drink herself. I just stood there, frozen I don’t know how to handle things like these. People are starting to get annoyed at my scene.  Nana, why do you always have to make a scene at your first days?

“Where’s the manager?” She impatiently asked. I didn’t know how to respond because first and foremost she’s Mr.Lee Dong Wook’s niece which would get me fired in an instant.

“Are you just going to stand there? I can’t believe my uncle hires incompetent people now” She rolled her eyes.

“What’s happening here?” Sir Dong wook came and asked worriedly

“This and That happened” Krystal pointed at her dress and spilled drinks on the table.

“Uncle, How can you hire someone incompetent? Is this your way of boosting Coast’s sale? By just hiring someone with a face but with no actual skills?” This girl kept insulting me like my dad made it clear it to me that I was going nowhere because I lack skills. I just looked at my feet in embarrassment and bit my lip.

“Krystal, she’s a new hire. And it’s so inconsiderate of you to make a scene. Can’t you see people are dining here” Huh. Mr. Lee Dong Wook unexpectedly defended me. He just kept on surprising me. He lectured her to no end and I can see Krystal was not amused.

“I’m really sorry Ms. Krystal” I said against my will.

“I don’t care how sorry you are, but make sure I don’t see your face again once I’m here” she threatened.

“Yah, Krystal. She said sorry, didn’t she?” I glanced at the familiar voice. I wasn’t really surprise to see Kris in here because he said about picking me up from here when I finish my work. But what made me curious was how on earth do people here in California know each other?

“Oh. Oppa.” Krystal just broke out in anger and ran to Kris’ side as she slung her arm around Kris’s arm.

“You haven’t been here since Ma-“ Kris immediately hushed her. They both walked towards me. I’m uncertain as to how to react in this. Seeing Kris with another girl kind of disappointed me. I just turned my back and walked away because I couldn’t stand hearing the girl flirt with Kris. It shouldn’t have affected me but it did. And that terrified me.

I went to the manager’soffice instead. Debating if I was going to knock or just leave, but I ended up knocking anyway. I heard him say get in and so I did.

“Ms.Nana, what brings you here?” He asked.

“I would just like to apologize for what happened. It was really clumsy of me and I promise not to let it happen again” And then he chuckled.

“Calm down, Nana. My niece has always been like that. She scares my staff way more than me. She’s a spoiled brat. And you, just do you job. “ He reached out for my arm and gently massaged it. The way he my arm gave me goose bumps instantly and I didn’t know what to do. I don’t want to be rude but I don’t want to be touched like that either.

“I can let you off early” Thankfully, he removed his hand.

              “But it’s still eight thirty?”

“Don’t worry. I won’t cut it from your salary” He smiled at me. He’s being nice, Nana. Way too nice.

“Oh okay. Thank you so much. I’m going to do better tomorrow”I left his office right away and rested my back at the door as soon as I got out. I sighed.

I went to my locker to get changed. I fixed my things as soon as possible and made my way out. I bid my colleagues a good night and left. I scanned the room for Kris and Krystal but failed to find them. Guess they went out together. It relieved me for a second knowing that my study session with Kris is cancelled, but it bothered me whether he’s with her. I wouldn’t be surprise if Kris dated her. She’s gorgeous and rich- she’s the type of girl that Kris likes. I couldn’t deny that.

As I opened the door “ You’re early”

“Eom-ma-ya! Kris you scared me” I tried to hit his arm, but he was so damn fast and caught my hand. Kris didn’t budge from his position of reclining his back on the wall with his legs crossed. I quickly pulled my hand away and refrained from blushing.

“I forgot you’re Korean. Come on” Kris straightened his body and walked beside me.

I looked for his motorbike, but found nothing? “To where?”

“To tutor me, silly. Have you forgotten?” I sure have not forgotten it.

“How are we going to-?” Before I can finish, I saw Kris opened a car door. He made a gesture for me to get in. I walked hurriedly and went inside. Kris closed the door and jogged to the driver’s seat. The car smelt of mint and aftershave, and I couldn’t help but feel comfortable.

           “Buckle up” Kris ordered.

“Where’s your bike?” Kris started the car and drove off.

“I thought you hated my bike” Kris glanced at me

“Well, I thought it’s our only means of transportation. So yeah” I excused myself. Nana, why do have to be nervous around Kris? He’s just no one. No one. I repeated in my head.

“You told me you’re not going to ride the bike again so I used my car instead” He looked at me again and smile.

“Yah eyes on the road. You’re going to get us killed.” He chuckled and I swear his laughter sounded like a music to my ears. Our conversation ended just like that, I don’t want him checking up on me even though I was itching to bring up Krystal, that might cause our death. It took only fifteen minutes till we reached his ginormous house. I was so amazed. I couldn’t stop staring at his house. Kris’ house is made mostly of glass and I can see from the outside how stunning the insides are. I unbuckled my seatbelt and got out.

“Wow Kris. You didn’t tell me you’re some rich heirloom” Still amazed.

“Close your mouth, bugs might get in. I only want one thing to get in there” I looked at him annoyingly and disgustingly and he just laughed. Kris and I went inside his beautiful house. Everything is amazing and so sophisticated. We were greeted with a Yamaha grand piano.

“You play?” I asked as I brushed the tips of my fingers on the piano. Kris only nodded- he just kept on surprising me.

“Honey, you’re home. Oh.” I looked up to fine lady walking gracefully down the stairs

“Who’s the beautiful girl, hun? Is she your girlfriend?” I couldn’t help but blush.  “It’s just that Kris rarely brings a girl home. She really looks like someone, though” She added.

“No mom. She’s a uhm” Kris couldn’t seem to finish his sentence, and so I butted in.

“A classmate. I’m here to tutor him in chemistry”

“Ooh. Are you making trouble at school again Kris?” He stared at her son, digging a hole.

“Ah no no. He just needed a tutor because the lessons are getting harder” I defended.

“That’s so nice of you. You-“ Kris cutted his mom off. He grabbed my wrist and pulled me upstairs.

“Mom, we’re going to my room so we can finish early. Okay?”

Kris led me to the last door on the hall without breaking any skin contact.  And when he opened it, my eyes widened in shock. A large open window took most of the room’s space, but I couldn’t deny how perfectly it fits there. His room is an epitome of simplicity, despite the natural light coming from the moon’s shine as our only source of light at the moment, I could see how clean and arranged his bedroom is. I spotted a telescope near the open window and immediately made my way there. It’s not nice to touch other people’s things, but this is an exception. I took a look at the telescope’s lens and saw the moon in details. The moon is one celestial object that always impresses me; how it lights up the world in times of darkness. I wish I had a moon in my own darkness

“It’s beautiful isn’t it? Kris disturbed.

“It is. This is amazing Kris, really”

“When I discover a star, I will name it after you” He smiled. I hate how Kris is looking at me right now. The way he looks at me makes me shiver, and I’m afraid if this continues, I don’t know the things I can do to him. I cleared my throat and that broke our staring contest.

“We better start. It’s nine already” I urged. Kris switched on the lights, grabbed our stuff and sat down on his bed.

              “What are you doing?”

“I’m going to rest. I’m so exhausted right now. This day was tiring” Kris then closed his eyes as he lay on his bed. I wondered where Kris has been the whole day. He was nowhere in school, but I wouldn’t allow him to bail on our study session.

“No, stand up. We’re going to study” Kris’ eyes suddenly opened.

“Give it a break, Nana. Come here” He patted the side of his bed.

“No, if we’re not going to study. I’m leaving” Kris grunted and got up immediately. He walked towards the study table and took a seat. I followed him.

“You do know how annoying you are right now, are you. So where do we start?” I rolled my eyes.

“Take your table of elements out” He pulled out the paper out from his drawer and stared at it.

“What am I going to do with this?” He asked me innocently.

“Memorize it” I was preventing laughter from escaping my mouth because of the look Kris had on his face.

“Are insane? How am I going to memorize this ? H, O, C, Na. This is bull, Nana”

“See, you do know a few. Just memorize the important ones. It’s really easy” I pointed the important ones and he seemed to be satisfied. It didn’t take too much time, Kris has managed to memorize some of the elements and their valence numbers. I saw how focused he was on his task, and that made me happy. After that, I taught Kris how to balance chemical equations; how he needs to take note of the number of atoms etc. Kris was really attentive even though he found it really hard, he still did his best. We’ve been balancing equations for the past hour and Kris still didn’t get. I’m not losing my patience because the sight of Kris learning his equations amused me. Kris furrowed his brows as he answered my sample problems.

“I’m done with this” Kris threw the paper in the air.

“I can’t get it! We’ve been at it for an hour. I’m going to my bed instead. Aish you make me exhausted Nana” Kris stood up from his seat and headed to his bed

“Well, it’s not my problem you’re stupid. Too bad stupid guys turn me off” I mocked. Kris immediately went back to my side and grabbed the paper again.

“What’s that on your arm?” I froze. Kris noticed the scar on my arm. I didn’t know what to do.

“Don’t touch it” I murmured. But Kris being the persistent person he is, still touched it.

“I said don’t touch it!!” Kris stood there with a terror in his eyes as I exploded.  I was also taken aback with my outburst. It’s the first time I shouted at someone like that. I hate how people become nosy and try to meddle at other’s lives. I couldn’t risk that fact of him finding out. I couldn’t let him know. Thus, I stood up, grabbed my stuff and walked out. This is for the best. Kris ran and caught up on me blocking the hallway.

“Look I’m really sorry. I didnt mean to make you uncomfortable but please let me just drive you home” he begged. I felt guilty as I looked in his eyes. I saw nothing but concern.

We walked down the stairs and got out from the house. Kris opened the car’s door for me and I willingly took a seat. I had no strength to fight with him nor talk with him. The whole ride was nothing but a complete silence. Kris didn’t bother to start a conversation and just focused on driving. I watched the darkness outside engulfed us and without knowing, a tear escape my eye.
