Winter Vacation

I Must Be Crazy

After long several school days had passed, the weather outside had turned very cold, and sometimes a snowfall would paint the ground, the tress, and the hillsides off in the distance. Time sliced through Ch’usok and pushed on until the calendar showed the month of December, this month being the month that Dahyun waited for every year. She felt that the month of December which began the holiday season carried that great, spirited happiness forward into the coming year.

Ms Choi announced that there would be a gift exchange between students on the last day of school before vacation began.

A couple of nights later, Dahyun accompanied her parents to the department store. With her parent’s help she purchased a small teddy bear to give as a present for her classmate she had picked.

Dahyun don’t have much money to buy gifts for her friends that’s why she decided to bake cookies instead. She’d asked Taehyung to help her find a currant cookie recipe since he knew of a good recipe. She’s actually surprise that he was willing to teach her. Well she can’t say anything bad about him now since he’s being nicer to her recently and it makes her comfortable around him.

She made Jungkook’s cookies special from the rest and hoping that he’ll like it though she’s still skeptical. Dahyun was staring at her presents when she feels like there’s something missing.

“Ahh! Right...” She walks over her closet and searched for extra gift cards which she kept last Christmas. Her eyes caught a big box under her closet and opened it.

It’s where she kept all the presents and letters she received from her friends and family. She took a glance at each item with a small smile plastered of her face, appreciating all the gifts.

“Oh,” she furrowed her brows as she grabbed a water globe and few items she received from Taehyung. Actually, it was all from his mom according to him though she’s reluctant since she only saw his mom twice but anyway it’s more impossible that these were all from him. She shrugs and put it all the gifts in the box.

Students only attended school today for the particular reason of having class Christmas parties and exchanging gifts with other students and their teachers. Some classes enjoyed sharing in the final day of lighting the Christmas tree in their classrooms. After arriving at school, Dahyun went straight to her room, where most of her classmates had arrived already.

“Dahyun!” Tzuyu called her as soon as she entered the room and handed her a present.

“Merry Christmas! This one is for you!”

“Oh thank you.” Dahyun shook the gift, trying to distinguish what’s inside. Chaeyoung walks over them and they start exchanging gifts.

They began chatting with each other and more excited and hyper each passing second as the party started.

Dahyun took a glance at Jungkook’s cookies which is the only one left in her bag. She wanted to give it to him but there are too many students around them and she doesn’t want to create a scene that will suspect her of having a crush on him.

Dahyun planned to stay in the room after the party but was being dragged by Chaeyoung and Tzuyu outside for picture taking. She successfully sneaked out and went straight back to the classroom. Her shoulders slumped in disappointment as she saw the room empty. Where is he now?

Dahyun jerked when someone tapped her on the shoulder. She whirled around, making a full circle and a half before making a complete stop to discover that it was Jungkook.

“Who are you looking for?” he said.

Her heart skipped a beat as she gulps. Dahyun suddenly forgot being sane and blurted out a little too quick. “You,” she covered with her two hands.

“Me?” Jungkook was surprised at her statement but pretend it was nothing. “Why are you looking for me?”

She flicked her gaze away. “Actually not… I’m just…”

“What?” Jungkook asked in confusion.

Dahyun sighed, ping her bag and pulls out the cookies inside and handed him her gift. “Here’s my Christmas present for you.” She said not looking at him.

“Oh, thank you.”

Dahyun slowly glanced up to see his expression. “I baked those cookies.” She said sheepishly.

“Wow… thanks!” Jungkook felt pleased that Dahyun also gave him her homemade cookies. He was downhearted a while ago seeing some of her classmates eating cookies which were all from Dahyun even Ms. Choi got cookies too. He thought that Dahyun forgot him already.

“Umm… Dahyun”

“Yes?”

“Could you go to a live concert with me? It’s on Christmas eve at Banpo Bridge…”

“Eh?”

“It will start at 5pm until eight in the evening so you don’t need to worry that you might miss the Christmas Eve with your family.” Jungkook shyly looks over Dahyun. He touches his neck rubbing it back and forth, waiting for her response.

“Sure. Let’s go together.”

"Great! Thanks.”

“No problem,” she uttered and said her good bye since Chaeyoung and Tzuyu are probably looking for her now.

Feeling overwhelmed, she proceeded down to the lobby where her friends are waiting for her.

“Where have you been?” Chaeyoung complained.

“I thought I forgot something in the classroom,” Dahyun lied and coiled her arms around Chaeyoung and Tzuyu’s arm. “So where should we go now?” she felt hyped as she finally handed her cookies to Jungkook and plus they’ll go on date on Christmas Eve! She actually can’t wait that day to come! It would probably the best Christmas ever!

“Let’s go to karaoke!” Tzuyu recommended while Chaeyoung growled as she’s not into singing.

They went to the nearest karaoke and slipped inside to check for available rooms.

“Are we even allowed here?” Chaeyoung murmured as they entered one of the rooms that the staff offered them.

“Of course, they wouldn’t mind since we aren’t wearing school uniform and this is not a bar anyway so why are you worried.” Tzuyu replied as she scanned the song book.

“We’re gonna have a party tonight so everybody lose control! Wohoo!” They covered their ears when Dahyun speak loudly through a microphone.

They partied and sang like a lunatic inside the karaoke room for almost an hour. A few more minutes, they decided to leave the place and separated on their way home, wishing each other a great holiday season.

Dahyun was walking down the street singing when she saw Taehyung outside her house, pacing back and forth, his hands into the pockets of his jacket.

She couldn’t help but wonder who or what kept him pacing outside in a cold weather at night.  He stopped as soon as he saw her.

Now she watched him hurtle toward her and chuckled.

“Don’t you know what time now? How could a girl like you get home late at night?”

Dahyun rolled her eyes and walked pass him. “You’re exaggerating… it’s only 8pm and for your information, I asked permission from mom so there’s no need for you to act like my parents.”

Taehyung eyes twitched. “Hey where’s mine?”

Dahyun turned at him frowning, “Huh?”

“I taught you to bake but then you had totally forgotten me?” There was a strained note in his voice.

She looked uneasy, as well as feeling guilty. She felt that she should have at least prepared one for him though she really planned to give him a present on his birthday the night before the New Year’s Eve.

“It’s okay,” he said, cutting her off before words came out from . “Anyway about what we’ve agreed on the 24th –”

“Now that you say that, I actually forgot to tell you that my friends invited me on a date on Christmas Eve… can you ask someone else instead? Besides, you never told me where are we going anyway.”

Taehyung paused for a moment. “Ah… don’t worry about that. I was about to tell you that it was cancelled because we have relatives coming that day.” He grinned, “So I’m pretty busy the whole day helping mom.”

"Is it important? Are you going to buy something and you need my assistance?"

"No... like what I said you don't need to feel bothered."

“That’s great.” She patted his shoulders but Taehyung put her hands down and pushed her toward her house. “It’s getting cold so just go inside.”

Taehyung began walking and turned his head back when Dahyun called his name.

“I’ll make it up to you next time!” Dahyun shouted, talking about the present as she waved at him, smiling.

Taehyung smiled back at her and continue on his way down the street.  He sighed loudly and couldn’t help but feel a rush of sadness run up his body as he thought about selling the two tickets he bought for them or go to the concert alone.
