Why People Hate Your Story

Part 11- The rated war

Par 12- the bubble burster of fanfics: the next rated battle started (these two written back when fics couldn't have individual chapters marked rated, there was only one featured fic a week, the fics were usually rated, and the rated sign was [H] )

I tried editing this after just rambling out ideas and stuff, but I just don't want too. This rant makes me uncomfortable in a sense that there are so many aspects to it that I could go into and I don't want to go into it at all. My final stand on ual Content in fics is that it can be used, but only when necessary or when the author has the proper experience with writing it. My favorite author probably writes more than she needs to, but she writes it really well. On the other hand, there are a lot of stories that try to write it for no reason but can't do it that well.

This is good enough, you guys know what I mean. With contributions from Maria for the bullet points.

Reasons why you should write .

  • It’s entertaining
  • The story is probably more mature
  • You will be more popular
  • We are all little somethings that love
  • This is how we get our ed

Reasons not to write

  • Everything
  • You can’t write it correctly, it doesn’t work that way
  • You’re a
  • It’s insensitive, your
  • They just met
  • There is no reason for it
  • Seriously, you don’t need to write , ever
  • It kills the story
  • POV changes in makes me want to kill people
  • is repetitive
  • is an element of writing, not the basis of a story
  • Seriously, no Ed, you’re 12
  • Misuse of terms
  • It isn’t written well!

What really pleases me is that rated stories can no longer get featured; at least I haven’t seen a rated story get featured in the past few months. It really disgusted me to see fics that were pure getting featured, especially when the wasn’t even good. My Maria knows how I feel about fics containing only chapters getting hundreds of subs. Judging you.

There is not a single fanfic out there that needs rated moments, otherwise the fic is actually PWP, Without Plot. If it absolutely needs to make sense or for anything to even happen, it is most likely . (All the PWP fics I have reviewed before have failed the review).

How I feel about fics? I read it, I won’t lie. On livejournal I find that fics with ual content have mature storylines and are more developed plot wise. There are many fics that are just with little or no plot; I use these fics to put me to sleep. Here on AFF… I don’t even try. They sicken me too much. All I can say is if the fic and the rated scene are written well, I can live with it.

The truth is that the majority of users here are okay with reading . I have conversed with some users who don’t read it, but only a few. People like . The idea of writing about makes people feel mature, even if many writers who have written fics have never had . I think they believe it makes their characters seem like an adult. It doesn’t quite make sense to me since I don’t write ual fics.

If you are not comfortable with writing scenes, don’t do it! It is not necessary. Their wedding night doesn’t need to be written out, that doesn’t, that one time in the back alley. None of it needs to be written out. Silly gimmicks with aphrodisiac chocolate and date drugs don’t need to be added either. isn’t that important for your story! Even if the main couple’s isn’t written out, I’m sure the readers will get that they had if you write something to imply it. Even if the leads to the girl getting pregnant, it still doesn’t need to be written out.

Does even fit in with the flow of the story? In a lot of fics I have read there has been a certain flow in the fic. A lot of drama is happening or action or whatever I'm reading when out of the blue there is . There is no reason, just . Random in the subway bathroom, a romp at the theme park, behind the bookshelves at the library. I ask myself, why did this is even happen? In cases like this, I'd rather just read a PWP so I'm freaked out about the randomness of it. I'd almost prefer fics to be split between PWPs and normal fics, then I wish PWPs weren't as popular because of the whole not really being creative thing.

isn't creative. If you read enough of it, you realize it is all the same thing. The way they have , the circumstances leading into it, how they wake up. I think this is one of the reasons why those stories are getting more popular. Thank god they aren't getting featured!

It’s really silly for someone to ask their readers if they should write or not. When people do this I assume they want to write but they aren’t any good at it and they don’t want to offend those few that aren’t comfortable because they let their readers dictate their fics. Child please, if you don’t understand that well, then don’t write about it. I don’t write for a reason.

Obviously I am not going to educate you on ual terms, nor am I going to teach you how to write a ual fic. That’s not what this is. I’m sure there is a tutorial workshop fic thing here somewhere on AFF. I’m sure it has a plethora of education written by a user whose name reminds me of marshmallows. I’m sure you can find it and read it if you can stomach it. I encourage everyone to read chapter 29 if they do ever come across this magical tutorial that I am sure exists. The topic of Chapter 29 is .

I myself am not a victim and I hope to never be a victim, and gosh is scary. I say this because I have come across how lightly is taken and how misconceived it is. is a non-consensual ual assault on another person. Why would something you don’t want, that will harm you emotionally and physically, that could kill you, why would you at the same time want to be , to feel pleasure, to feel loved? Those two concepts do not go together. has been and always will be an evil thing and cannot be put on the same level as lovers having a dramatic first.

Let’s not even talk about the emotional turmoil it leaves people in. This is all too much for me to explain without researching itself. I can talk about the I have read about in some trashy fanfics. I have read a few fics where everything was sound and solid. Everything was realistic, sickeningly so, and I went to sleep shivering those nights. I have also read some fics that had me ranting for hours about the flaws of fanfiction.

The bad fics. If you are not aware, there is one fic that I have dubbed THE BIG BOTTLE OF CLICHÉ for perfectly summing up what a bad fic is. It has character profiles, it’s a “you” story, there are twenty POV changes in a chapter and the titles are WrItEn LiKe ThIs, the characters themselves are incredibly overused (shy/perfect girl, playboy rich baddie, aggressive bestie, snob rival), and the plot itself makes me want to puke. It is a real fic, not going by that name obviously, and I have only shown it to two people. It’s awful. Long disturbing story short, YOU went to a club, got , got pregnant, started living with YOUR , had a miscarriage, went to the same club, got again by the same person, got pregnant again, got engaged to YOUR , almost aborted the baby on YOUR wedding day because YOU weren’t sure YOUR loved YOU, got married to YOUR , had the baby on the same day as YOUR best friend who got pregnant a month before YOU. All in high school.

This needs no explanation. This ery will stand as it is.

You wouldn’t marry your , .

in school, how have they not been caught?

Not getting pregnant, it’ll happen eventually. The only surefire way to not get pregnant is abstinence, gay , or being sterile. While on this topic, when referring to how far along a pregnancy is, you refer in weeks, not months. Morning sickness and mood swings do not come in the first week, let alone the first three days. And people, babies are born out of the , not the . Or by cesarean section, but definitely not the .

If that man has had with every woman in Seoul, he probably has an STD. He is also a huge man, highly undesirable. tiness shouldn’t be gender specific. While female are often hated, the males usually get away with their man tendencies with the silly excuse that they are men and therefore can’t keep it in their pants. Still a man. Would not tap that.

Seriously, they would have an STD by now after ing everyone is Seoul, including every girl group in existence! Even those with little kids!

And I’m sorry, but this is a generally accepted stereotype, but Asians have small es. Maybe not all of them, but probably a lot of them, especially those skinny idols. L.Joe sized ones.

Last year I blogged about how I was starting a war on rated fics. Nothing really came out of that. I made it a point that if you have that magical red [M] next to your title more people will want to read it. Now people have to click on titles to see if any of the chapters are rated if the title isn’t marked. It’s inconvenient for those that are only reading the fic for the occasional y times. As you can assume, for some people, the fic is only appealing if there is some sort of rated scene.

Tsk, tsk, tsk. You dirty children. You are reading fanfics incorrectly. My superior ruling decrees that all fanfics must be read for the storyline enjoyment and characters, no more, no less. The is a surprise bonus. Seriously, if you only write/read fanfics to pop out ty little adventures, just go watch or something. There are too many trashy fics going without any understanding of what “” really means. It is literally word .

I only respect a few authors for writing with ual themes. They write it realistically and only as an added element, not their main storyline. Like one fic I absolutely love is about a guy who got into a car accident and became paralyzed from the waist down and his band mates are take shifts staying by his side. It’s a really touching story. And as he slowly rehabilitates, he starts getting boners.

If I read another school fic I will lose my mind.

Let's not even go into how incorrectly people write . Some things are just not possible.

Chapter 37: Ahhh, this was really entertaining to read. I love your tips... and also your sarcasm. lol

Chapter 33: For me, I often just deal with subs-only stories by subbing to it temporarily, but most of the time, I read the first few chapters, lose interest, and unsub. I'm also like you where I firmly disbelieve in sub-only mode; there was one instance one of my stories was subs-only, and that was when AFF automatically marked every story with a trigger warning with members and subscribers only, and even then, as soon as I found they changed that, I removed the marker.
To me, someone who uses the sub-only option are those who don't have confidence in their own content to attract subscribers. But sub count isn't necessarily an accurate metric of viewership of your writing: if one wanted to do that, story statistics or chapter statistics is a better representation of how many people that still read your stuff

Chapter 28: Absolutely agree with you regarding description and dialogue.
I read some stories that lacked description and more dialogue. I want to explain to the authors about this, but because my english isn't really good and limited, I often don't know how to tell them and what to say to them. This really helps. ^^

Chapter 25: Hey, so reading this sorta made me think about chapter lengths ...

My chapters usually have, I'd say, around 3000 words each. Usually, my chapters are divided based on time skips (sorta).
That's not to say that I don't have a few time skips in my chapters, but I guess it'd be more accurate to say that I divide my chapters based on events. You know how some events will happen right next to each other and other events require some time to pass, right? That's sorta what I mean by that.
So I guess my question is: what do you think the ideal chapter length is (for you personally and what you think is the most effective for general reader bases, as in not just AFF but people who read in general)? Would something like 3,000 words suffice, or is the 10,000 word length better?
Of course, this question sorta varies from story to story (how it's laid out, how it's narrated, etc.), but from what you've seen, what's the best?

Wow, this was published when I'd just turned 12 and I'm reading it now as an 18 y.o.
I do like writing a lot, and English is not exactly my mother tongue, yet I don't think my English is bad.. It's just not academic.

So hopefully with this, I'll improve my writing style as I continue my writings. I don't necessarily agree with all of your opinions but it has helped me improved a bit for now and hopefully will help me more in the future when I come back for more tips.

Thank you so much for this! It's truly appreciated!

Chapter 37: just wanted to say that you have the best tips and i love it! you don't beat around the bush and get straight to the point! it really helped me^^

i agree with everything you said in all of your chapters, but that's how you attract readers in every website, right? haha aff, wattpad, etc, everyone wants a good dose of cliche and cheesiness :)

Chapter 9: I like how straightforward you are. It really helps with how my writing is and to be honest I have done a lot of the 'not to do' tips. Sometimes you're so straightforward its funny instead.

Chapter 6: i'm laughing at the accuracy of these cliché plots. sometimes i give them a try, but i just can’t tolerate some.. it’s totally the same thing all over again and pointless to read.
