Chapter Three
The Taste of DeathJessica's blonde hair was swept up in a french braid. She was wearing a light blue pencil skirt that stopped above her knees and a loose white blouse.
Before I could speak, Sica ran towards me and engulfed me in a hug. I don't usually cry in public, but at that moment, I felt tears stinging my eyes. Soon, they were streaming down my cheeks. "I thought you were dead," I told my friend in between sobs. Our mini-reunion was cut short by the sound of wheels on tiles.
"Sir,the paramedics are here," one of the police officers whispered to their leader. Officer Cho nodded indifferently and began to walk towards the backstage area. Suddenly, he stopped short and wheeled around. He studied my face intently, as if memorizing every single feature. When his eyes finally met mine, I felt my cheeks burn.
"I'll deal with you later," he muttered before disappearing behind the curtains.
"But you just got here," Jessica cried out. "He can't possibly accuse you of being responsible for what happened."
I was unable to look my friend in the eye. I muttered rather inaudibly, "Sica-unnie, I .... I jaywalked."
Jessica heard me loud and clear, though. Her eyes bugged out and a teasing smile crept on her face. "Really?" she exclaimed. "Our innocent and pure Seohyun's jaywalking?"
"Unnie, please lower down your voice," I avoided her gaze. I didn't want to be rude, but I didn't feel like talking about my misdeeds when we were practically surrounded by police officers. I did the next best thing and changed the topic. "Can you tell me what happened here?"
Almost immediately, Jessica's expression turned grim. She gestured towards a couple of empty seats beside the stage. "Let's start at the beginning."
---------------------------------------------------
The beginning turned out to be exactly three weeks ago. Jessica said she was sorting through her fan-mail - something she does to cheer herself up after a tiring day - when she came upon "the letter".
"It was just a white sheet of paper with nothing on it except a big 'three'!" Jessica waved her arms dramatically.
I furrowed my brows. "A big three?"
