Lunch
Behind the Mask [Bangtan]“Why?” Jimin asked, dramatically draping himself against the door of the van. “Why do bad things happen to good people?”
Rap Monster made a face. “You’re ridiculous.”
Mallory sighed and leaned against the door. “Do you know of any food places around here?” All three shrugged. She sighed again. “Alright. Get in. We’re going to the Top Cloud.”
As Mallory started around the car, Rap Monster and Jimin climbed in, but Suga caught her arm. “What about the others?” He asked, looking down to where his hand was gripping her arm. “Shouldn’t we call them and invite them to come with us?”
Mallory shrugged. “I can get something to go for them, okay? I’m really hungry, Suga, and I don’t want to wait for them. Besides, who else would have come back for that basket and left the bag with more than a million in camera equipment?” She had a point, so she tugged her arm away from him and walked to her side of the van, opening the door and climbing in.
Jungkook collapsed onto the grass beneath one of the trees near the Pavillion. “Thank goodness, we beat them.” He huffed, closing his eyes and putting his hands behind his head.
Zhen sat in the grass beside him. “I didn’t realize I was that heavy.” She said, turning to look at him. “You could have just said that you couldn’t carry me.”
Jungkook opened his eyes and looked up at Zhen. “Zhen Ai,” He drawled, the way he said her name making her uneasy. “You aren’t heavy at all. It was just hard running a good half mile, not knowing where I was going, while trying to not drop you.” He propped himself on one elbow. “Are we only doing this one palace-”
“Today, yes.” Zhen said, nodding. “I want to go to a few of the other places, though. Like Sungnyemun and Heunginjimun.” Jungkook nodded. Zhen layh in the grass beside him, far enough away that it would take both of them stretching their arms towards each other to touch. “I really hope that Mallory and the others are getting along.”
Jungkook laughed. “She’s a little tough, isn’t she?”
Zhen shrugged, knotting her fingers together and laying her twisted hands on her stomach. “I guess she can be. But you don’t really know her. She can be honestly nice. Once,” She smiled. “We got-” She stopped immediately. She was on the verge of telling him how a child had run up to Mallory, while they were doing their blog, and said that it was her dream to know who was under the mask, so Mallory bent down and pulled her mask back, just enough to reveal her face, and told the girl her name, and made her swear not to tell. Of course, she didn’t give her full name, and the child most definitely misheard her when she told people Mallory was named Milly, not Mallie. If she were to say that, then Jungkook would know it was Mallory and Zhen who wrote the nasty review. “Well, I mean, she drives me to school every day.”
Jungkook laughed. “Nice example.” He said, turning onto his side and propping his head on one hand. “But I guess that’s why you’re friends. Because you’re complete opposites. She’s bitter, cold and demanding, where you’re sweet, warm, and caring.”
Zhen winced. “You don’t even know me, Jungkook. How can you say that I’m that person if you don’t know me personally.”
Jungkook shrugged. “I’d think a week is enough time to start to see a person’s true colors. I mean, do you think I would have stuck around with the others as long as I have-”
“Maybe you just haven’t seen them on a bad day.”
Another one of his warm, I-know-you-want-to-smile-with-me laughs, and Zhen bit her lip, trying to keep from smiling. “I can promise you, I have.”
“There you two are.” J-Hope declared, as she slid off the panting V’s back. “I guess this means we have to go get the basket.”
“Hyung no!” V cried, kneeling. “I don’t think I can.” He said dramatically.
Jungkook laughed, sitting up. He crossed his legs and pointed behind J-Hope. “It looks like you don’t have to.”
Jin was starting towards them with the picnic basket in one hand and his cellphone in the other, which he was looking down at. He looked up at them, and a small smile spread across his lips. “I couldn’t find the others,” He said, setting the basket down beside Jungkook’s legs. “I tried to call them, but Suga’s phone is off, and Rap Monster isn’t answering.”
“Did you try Jimin?” Zhen offered, sitting up.
J-Hope shook his head. “Either the battery is depleted, or he forgot it in the van.”
Just then, Jin’s phone began to buzz, and he looked down, his eyes full of excitement, but they immediately turned stoney as he answered. “Where are you guys?”
Rap Monster had stepped away from the others, telling them he needed to make a call and to eat without him, which no one seemed object to. Suga, Mallory, and Jimin all made their way towards the line for food, starving.
