Nine Witches
Yuri kicked the table and looked at her phone again, she grumbled to herself a bit then got up from the cafe slamming the money for her coffee down in the process. She didn’t like it when people canceled on her, especially when it was a last minute cancellation. Normally things like this wouldn’t make her as mad as she was feeling but today she was in an especially bad mood. It just was not her day, she had forgotten about a test, slipped in the hall and during lunch some bastard spilled milk all over her new jacket. She walked down the street there was a new bakery a block or two away that she had originally planned to go with the others but seeing as they had cancelled on her and not vice versa, she didn’t feel bad about going with out them.
“Oh!” a new display caught her eye.
“Nice dress!” she glanced at the price tag,
‘Way too expensive!’ she thought and walked away.
“Eh?” A store clerk thought as he was wiping a window,
“There’s a crack!” He tried to peek over the window display,
‘Did that girl do something to the window?’ he thought, ‘Oh well. Better tell the manager.’
He got up and walked over towards the back of the store,
“Crackling?” He thought, he looked back at the window.
The cracks got bigger and and bigger then- it broke into tiny pieces, shattering out onto the streets.
“What was that?” He shouted.
Yuri mulled over her cupcake choices, red velvet or carrot cake? The bake shop was almost out of everything but it didn’t really matter to her, whatever tasted good was fine by her. She couldn’t decided, ‘Might as well treat myself’ she thought.
“I’ll take both” She told the clerk.
As he was bust boxing up her treats one of his co-workers appeared from the back,
“Hey, you hear what happened to the dress shop down the block?” He asked the guy leaning over the now empty display case.
The other boy shook his head as he carefully closed the box.
“Apparently their window just broke! out of the blue it cracked and just shattered! weird huh?”
The other boy just nodded and handed Yuri her cupcakes and change.
Yuri smiled and thanked the guy before leaving to go home.
As she walked outside she noticed a large crowd of people and some police,
‘Wasn’t that the dress shop I passed by?’
She continued walking home,
‘Lucky~ good thing I missed that circus! At least something good happened today.’
Yuri was halfway into her treat session when her grandmother awoke from her nap,
“Good afternoon grandma!” she said smiling at the older lady, she was starting to feel happier.
“Want half?” She asked pointing her fork to half of her last cupcake, her grandmother declined.
“Thank you but I shouldn’t be eating too many sweets now, pay back for indulging too much in my youth.” She winked.
“Okay!” Yuri said as she went back to eating.
Her grandmother pulled out a carton of milk
“oof~” It was a bit too heavy and she struggled to put it on the counter, Yuri who had decided to save the rest for later scolded her grandma.
“Grandma! Let me get that for you! Next time ask, you don’t need to push yourself~ What are grandchildren for?” she poured out a glass for her.
“Thank you dear.”
Yuri put the milk back into the fridge,
“Ah, that’s right! weren’t you supposed to be hanging out with your friends today? You got back earlier than I expected.”
Yuri could feel her anger coming back she tried to stay positive, why was she acting so down?
“They cancelled on me, unfortunately something came up and they couldn’t meet up with me.” she smiled.
“Ohh, that’s too bad.”
Yuri shook her head in agreement.
“At least you got some nice cup cakes.”
“Yeah!” She smiled.
Her grandma moved toward the sink with her now empty milk glass,
“Here grandma let me get that!” She insisted going for the glass in her grandmother’s frail hands. The second her their fingers touched, her grandmother fell to the ground. The glass shattered upon impact.
“GRANDMA!” Yuri shouted, she quickly knelled down on the floor.
“Oh my god! Grandma!”
Her mother and father rushed into the room after hearing Yuri’s scream,
“MOTHER!” Yuri’s father shouted.
“What happened?” Her mother asked,
“I-I don’t know she just fell to the ground!” Yuri explained, exasperated.
“Grandma?” She looked at her weak grandmother, her father picked her up and carried her to the couch while her mother held Yuri,
“Is she going to okay?” Yuri asked.
“I hope so.”
“Oh my! What am I doing on the couch?” She heard a familiar voice ask in an almost whisper,
“Grandma!” Yuri and her mother ran over to her,
“Thank goodness you’re okay.” Yuri said crying.
Her grandmother smiled, “Oh, Yuri don’t worry about me! I’ve had worse stuff happen to me than accidentally fainting! I probably just got up to fast or didn’t eat enough. It come with old age!” Her hand cupped Yuri’s cheek,
“I’m fine.”
Yuri nodded, her hand over her grandmother’s,
“Yeah.”
After everyone calmed down, Yuri and her mother stayed with her grandmother while her father went back to work in his study.
They were halfway into Yuri’s favorite movie when they heard a knock on the door.
“I’ll get that!” Yuri shouted heading towards the hallway.
She opened the door to see a short man who looked like he could have been a co-worker of her fathers,
“What do you want?” She asked.
He said nothing but handed her a small letter, Yuri opened it and read the letters contents,
“Girls Academy?” she asked, the man did not reply.
“Who is it Yuri?” She heard her mother ask from the living room.
“Oh! Nothing! i’m going to go out for a bit though!” She said,
“Just be back in time for dinner! but if you aren’t then call!”
“Okay!” She yelled as she closed the door to her house.
The man walked over to his expensive car and opened the door for,
“Thanks.” she said as she got in.
It was when she was fully buckled in that she realized,
‘This is when I realize i’m being kidnapped!’ she laughed a bit to herself,
‘Oddly, I don’t feel like that’s the case.’
She looked outside her window,
‘Doesn’t Yoona live around here?’
The man stopped driving,
‘Eh why’d he stop?’ She looked outside her window,
“Yoona!” she shouted.
Yoona had been jogging by the car, she was now opening right door and getting in, Yoona hadn’t noticed Yuri yet but the other girl was staring at her friend in disbelief.
Yoona glanced a bit,
“Yuri?” she asked.
“Yoona!” Yuri shouted again.
“What are you doing here?” Yoona asked,
“I could ask the same for you!”
Yoona pulled out a letter and pointed to it,
“Did you?...” Yuri nodded and showed Yoona her own,
“Where do you suppose were going?”
“I don’t know....”
Seohyun looked around at her surroundings, the two men had brought her to Headmistress Hyori’s office she, Hyoyeon and Sooyoung had been waiting outside her office for what seemed like and hour or more. She wondered how Yoona and Yuri were doing, hopefully they weren’t to mad at her. She felt bad,
‘I wish they had powers too....maybe they do.”
She looked at Hyoyeon and Sooyoung, both were sleeping in their seats. She had no paper to write on or anything to do, her phone was almost dead too. She resorted to staring at the doors, waiting. She soon felt sleepy too, her eyelids closed.
She didn’t know how long she had been sleeping but she knew what had woken her up. The door opened with a bang, a man dressed like the other two stepped it, followed by,
“Yoona! Yuri!”
She was surpised to see the two of them, they seemed equally shocked to see her. Seohyun shook Hyoyeon who was next to her,
“Wake up!”
“eh? wha-” Hyoyeon shot up, she slapped Sooyoung,
“What was that for?!” a grumpy barely a wake Sooyoung asked,
“Yoona and Yuri are here!”
Sooyoung looked at where Hyoyeon was pointing.
“Eh? What are you two doing here?” She asked.
Both shrugged their shoulders,
“The same as you I guess?” Yoona said,
“Then, you two have magical powers?” Seohyun asked,
They both laughed,
“Magical powers? What are you talking about? I’m pretty sure were just getting admitted into the academy early.” Yuri said,
Seohyun, Hyoyeon and Sooyoung all shook their heads.
“If you’re here then you must have magical powers, “ Seohyun said,
“I think you’ve been reading way too many books, Seohyun.”
“No! You must have powers! I mean that’s how you found them right? They awoke and made it easier to pinpoint their location?” She looked at the three men, all of them nodded.
“What?” Yuri asked astonished she looked at Yoona, who had a puzzled look on her face.
“Maybe Amber was right....” She muttered.
“Come on! Witches and the like aren’t real! There’s no way they can exist!” She yelled.
“Didn’t you do something you couldn’t explain?” Seohyun asked,
“Like make a flower spring from paper?”
“Or explode a hand dryer?” Sooyoung chimed,
“Or make it rain indoors?” Hyoyeon added.
Yuri thought back to the window that had cracked soon after she had admired the dress, her grandmother.
“No! I don’t believe you!” She shouted, she flung her arms in the air,
“Magic. Does. Not. Exist.” She brushed Seohyun’s hands off her shoulder, as soon as she had done so, the lights went out.
“What was that?”
“Oops~ Terribly sorry about all that~ Please excuse my being late~” a sing-song voice said from inside the Headmistress’s’ door, the door soon opened. A beautiful lady with long brown hair that spilled from her shoulder’s like waves appeared. She looked at the three men by her door,
“You can leave now, Eunhyuk, Donghae, Ryeowook. I’ll call you back later when i’m done.” She smiled and the three men left. She turned her attention to the five girls,
“Please, come with me.”
Without hesitation they all followed her into her office.
“Sit.” She said pointing to some chairs,
“Now, this does not happen often,” She began once everyone was seated.
“Usually most girls come from openly magical families so I don’t have to explain everything and lecture on and on... I also usually don’t have to get my boys to track down magical witches who have unrefined, untamed, some might say volatile powers....but it seems that every couple of years...we have exceptions.” She smiled at all of them.
“I’ve never seen such a high concentration of powers before, nor have I seen such a wide variety.” She got up from her desk.
“Now. I don’t expect this to all make sense right now, for some girls even if they’ve been learning about magic all their lives it still doesn’t click till their much older.” She took a pile of books and handed one to each girl,
“Those are the basic guidelines, cycles, aides, color system, etc.” she then went behind her desk,
“These, are your uniforms. Color coded based on powers.”
She handed each girl a bag, in it were skirts, shirts, socks, shoes, sweaters and even a jacket.
“Now. You will be expected to wear your uniform on campus at all times, what skirt you pick or what shoes you wear doesn’t matter. Just make sure you wear them.”
She looked each of them in the eye,
“I’m still seeing blank faces... don’t worry it’ll sink in soon. My advice- embrace it.” She motioned to the door.
“Tomorrow get here at the usual time; seven a.m, i’ll have some upperclassmen show you the ropes and help you get settled.”
As Yoona closed the door behind her Hyori smiled,
“See you tomorrow~”
Yuri collapsed as soon as she stepped outside, she started crying.
“I don’t want this, I don’t want these powers what ever they are! I just want to be normal.” She looked at her uniform and books.
“I just want a normal life.”
Yoona and the others sat next to her, Hyoyeon hugged her.
“Don’t worry, at least none of us are in it alone, right?” She looked into Yuri’s eyes,
“At least we all have each other.”
The others nodded.
Yuri gave a weak smile, “Yeah.”
