If I Stay.
An Old FriendNiel pushed the door softly so it closed behind him. His expression showed confusion and bewilderment over the scene he had just shared with Byunghun. He followed his well-practiced routine and shrugged off his coat, hanging it on his usual hook near the front door.
Hearing the shutting of the door Chunji appeared in the doorway to the kitchen, still in the clothes from earlier, his hair, though, had begun to tame itself.
“Hey,” Chunji began as he stepped into the hallway with Niel. “You ok?” His voice was soft as if he were approaching a timid animal.
Niel looked up to meet Chunji’s eyes with his own. Seeing his roommate’s worried face, Niel smiled reassuringly. “Yeah, I’m fine” He made his way further away from the front door and towards the stairs. ‘I can’t do it now, it can wait.’ He thought to himself as he tried to rush away from Chunji.
That was until Chunji’s voice that stopped him. “Minsoo called while you were out.” Niel paused and turned to see his best friend leaning against the doorframe to the kitchen with his arms crossed giving him a look which was a mixture of disappointment and sympathy. “He sounded pretty upset.” Chunji continued after he heard no reply. Chunji pushed himself to stand up from the doorframe and step closer to Niel, not once braking eye contact. “You broke up with him?”
Niel nodded slightly as if he were scared of how Chunji would react. His roommate lifted an eyebrow, urging the other to elaborate. Niel sighed and finally broke eye contact to look down at his shoes. “I couldn’t do it to him anymore.”
“Couldn’t do what?” Chunji asked as his arms fell to his sides.
Niel squeezed his eyes shut and brought a hand up to comb through his hair. His eyebrows furrowed deeply before he thought to himself, ‘It’s now or never.’ He dropped his arm, opened his eyes and tilted his head up to look at Chunji’s face who’s expression showed that he was waiting for an answer.
“I think I’ve fallen in love with you hyung.”
Chunji showed no reaction except for a swallow and a deep breath. He didn’t break eye contact with his best friend once. Even though he showed no negative reaction, he still didn’t say anything and this worried Niel.
‘This was the worst idea. Thanks, Changjo.’ Niel thought.
“I… I had better go.” Niel said, breaking the silence and turning back to the stairs, aiming to run to his room and never come out.
“Hey, wait.” Niel felt a light touch on his wrist which held onto the bannister. That light touch sent Niel’s heartbeat haywire, causing his physical breathing to speed up as well. He turned to see a long hand wrapped around his own wrist. Niel then walked his eyes up the other’s arm, to his neck, trailing and memorising his features before arriving at his eyes once more. Big, black orbs framed by a fence of perfect eyelashes. Niel’s lips involuntarily parted but Chunji didn’t seem to notice. Instead he just smiled sweetly before tugging lightly on Niel’s arm, encouraging him to turn and face him properly.
Niel obliged and turned his gaze back to Chunji’s hand around his arm. “You don’t have to run away.” Chunji spoke up.
“Yes I do” Niel said instantly, almost breaking Chunji off.
“No you don’t” Chunji replied, his soft tinge becoming harsher.
“Yes I do.” Niel retorted, his voice almost rising. His eyes came up to meet his best friend’s.
“Why?” Chunji asked.
“Because all I want is for you to be mine. Just mine. Not some girl’s or Byunghun’s. Mine. I don’t want to share you.” Niel paused leaving the only noise in the room to be his heavy breathing. “Also, all I want to do right now is kiss you and I know I shouldn’t but if I stay I don’t know if I’ll be able to stop myself.”
Chunji never broke eye contact or loosened his grip on the other’s arm but his lips did part slightly, involuntarily. Even though it was a very slight movement, Niel noticed it. His eyes moved, instantly, to Chunji’s set of lips.
‘Why not?’ Niel thought to himself and before he knew it he was creating a grip on Chunji’s fore arm and pullin
