Cruel Fate“I think I might have to move away from Seoul.” he said.
It took a moment for me to comprehend but when I did, I couldn’t accept it.
“What? Why? You mean us, right?” I started panicking. “We’re moving together, right? Yongguk, answer me.”
With his head hung low and his eyes not meeting my gaze, I knew that he meant him alone. I get out of the chair and walked to him. I cupped his face and made him look at me. I stared at him with pleading eyes.
“Please.” I whispered. “Please tell me we’re moving together.”
“But your studies-“ he started.
“Forget it.” I interrupted. “I’ll leave it all behind. I’ll move with you. Let’s start a family, Yongguk. Somewhere far away.”
Yongguk still had his face between my hands but his gaze diverted from mine, not looking me in the eyes. My eyes began to water because I didn’t want to be separate from him. I couldn’t live without him. I just knew that I couldn’t.
“Yongguk, please.” I whispered, my eyes starting to water. “Don’t abandon me like this.”
“I’m not abandoning you.” he said. “I’m protecting you. I quit my gang today. Do you think they’ll spare me? I know their drug system too well and I was hired by them to kill so many people. If they kill me, there is a very likely chance that they will find out about you and won’t spare you either.”
I couldn’t face the facts and believe that Yongguk could get killed. I wanted it all to be a sick joke. I wanted it to be fake but from Yongguk’s intense gaze, I knew that none of this was a joke.
“We’ll move together.” I insisted. “Back to your hometown. Anywhere. As long as we’re together.”
“You have Daehyun.” Yongguk whispered. “He’ll take really good care of you. I just know it.”
“Yongguk, I can’t do that.” I cried, tears already spilling from my eyes. “I don’t love him. I love you. Let’s move together and leave all of this behind us.”
Yongguk stood there for a moment and I could tell that he was contemplating. I looked at him and pleading silently with my eyes.
“Fine.” he sighed. “But think carefully. We won’t be coming back to-“
“Thank you.” I said, flinging my arms around him. “Thank you. Thank you. As long as I’m with you.”
“We’re moving tomorrow.” he said. “So pack some essential stuff tonight so we can leave tomorrow night.”
That night, after the packing and the tidying up, I lay in bed with my eyes wide open. I couldn’t seem to get a blink of sleep. The indescribable twist in my stomach was still there. I couldn't explain it. I continued to lie in bed but when I heard a sighed come out from Yongguk, I turned to him.
He was fast asleep and breathing steadily. I looked at him and couldn’t turn away because I wanted to take in every detail of him incase I didn’t… When my thought got to that dark and negative side, I decided to push everything aside and get a bit of a shut eye.
I woke up when I felt soft pecks on my cheeks. I groaned and stretched my limbs, hearing Yongguk chuckle.
“Morning.” he said in his low voice.
“Hey.” I croaked, my voice still thick with sleep. “When are we leaving?”
“Tonight.” Yongguk said. “That’s why I’ll probably have to go out and buy some things that we’ll need.”
“I should go buy them” I said, sitting up. “It’s dangerous for you to go outside.”
Yongguk smiled and ran his fingers through my hair, then tucking it behind my ear.
“I’ll go somewhere far from them. You might want to go out with Daehyun to say goodbye.” Yongguk said.
I bit my lip and debated with myself whether I wanted that or not. Daehyun was a very good friend to me I didn’t know if it was safe to tell him that I was moving away. So I decided on yes, I was going to go see him but I wasn’t going to tell him about me moving away. I didn’t know. I figured that I would make it up.
“I guess I could do that.” I said, still slightly unsure. “But do you think it’d be convenient for us?”
Yongguk rested a hand on my cheek.
“Of course.” he smiled.
I felt around the bed for my phone and called Daehyun but then remembering the time. I checked the clock and it was only eight in the morning. I was about to hung up when he picked up.
“Hey missy.” he cheered. “Morning. Did you sleep well?”
I threw the blankets off of myself and was about to get out of bed when Yongguk grabbed my hand softly and pulled me back. Then I wasn’t so comfortable. It wasn’t that I had any private matters with Daehyun, it was just that I didn’t want Yongguk misunderstand my acting.
“Good. How about you?” I said.
Yongguk patted his lap and rolled my eyes jokingly and lay myself down onto his lap. I was having a conversation to my supposed ‘boyfriend’ while lying in my real boyfriend’s lap. I felt horrible.
“Good. So what have I done to get this blessing of you calling me up in the morning?” Daehyun laughed.
“I was just wondering if wanted to go out. Just you and me.” I said, glancing up at Yongguk.
“Sounds good to me. What time did you have in mind, because I still have to go to work and come back.” he said.
“Whatever time that’s convenient for you.” I said. “But I can’t be out late uh… because, because I still have my assignments to finish.”
I heard the line go silent for a bit before Daehyun finally answered again.
“Does two in the afternoon sound good?” he suggested. “I just have to go to the station and do some reports on some gang and I’m done.”
I gulped slightly and I felt Yongguk tense a little. He must have heard. Did the gang that Daehyun was talking about have anything to do with Yongguk? I didn’t know and I honestly didn’t want to know.
“Okay. I’ll meet up at our usual coffee shop?” I asked.
I never got picked up from home because it was too much of a risk for Yongguk so I would also meet Daehyun at a coffee shop close to his police station.
“Sounds great.” Daehyun cheered. “See you soon.”
“He sounds like a sweet guy.” Yongguk laughed as I hung up the phone.
I get up from Yongguk’s lap and up from the bed. I walked over to the wardrobe and looked for some clothes.
“That’s got nothing to do with how I feel about you.” I said. “You know that.”
“You still have time to reconsider.” I heard Yongguk come towards me. “You still have time to say no and stay back here.”
“I’m going with you.” I said, spinning around to face him. “Nothing you say now can make me change my mind.”
But truly, nothing in the world could have changed my mind. I looked at Yongguk and nodded, telling him that it was true and that I would never reconsider.
Hours passed by and I was doing my work to pass time by, although I knew that I wouldn’t need to do the work anymore. Yongguk was still packing some of his things for the move, including his two handguns, I gulped unconsciously when I heard the clank of the metal.
“Babe, it’s nearly two.” Yongguk said, coming out from the bedroom. “You might want to start heading out to meet with Daehyun.”
I looked at the clock and began to pack up my things, bringing them back into my bedroom. Since I was already dressed for the day, I just reached over to the hanger and grabbed a cardigan and began heading towards the door, grabbing my phone and purse on the way.
“I’ll see you soon.” I said, stopping at Yongguk and tiptoeing to plant a kiss onto his lips.
I felt him rest a hand on my waist and kiss me back.
“Be safe, alright?” I said.
He nodded and I turned around, making my way out the door and walked to the coffee shop.
Sitting in the warm coffee shop, my glance shot to the door as the bell on top of it dinged. In walked Daehyun, looking handsome as always but I viewed him nothing more than a friend.
“It’s getting a really chilly outside.” Daehyun shivered, rubbing his hands together and settling in the seat across from me.
“Hello to you too, Mr.Daehyun.” I laughed. “Of course, it’s the middle of fall, it’ll be winter soon.”
The afternoon went by in that warm coffee shop and when we finally decided to take a short stroll in the nearby park, it was about five thirty. Stepping outside, the sky was already getting fairly dark, I shivered a bit, putting my cardigan on and I stiffened when I felt Daehyun take hold of my hand. I glanced at him but he kept his gaze to the front, pretending not to notice.
The roads were empty, no cars were driving only pedestrians walking on the side walk. The feel was peaceful. Nearing the park, I heard something that sounded like two gunshots. I froze and looked back, since it was close to our apartment area, I had a terrible feeling about those two gunshots.
“Did you hear that?” I whispered to Daehyun, unconsciously my grip getting tighter on his hand.
“Yeah.” he answered, reaching into his pocket and taking out his phone, calling someone.
“Youngjae,” he said immediately. “There’s been two gunshots near the coffee shop a mile from our station. Could you get some of our people to check that out? Yeah, okay.”
Suddenly, there was a loud commotion of yelling and chattering, when a number of men were running down the streets and into our direction. My heart caught in my throat when I saw that at the front of the chase was Yongguk.
