Creating Coincidences

Random Ramen Kryber Shots

a/n: Technically, I'm a day late where I live... anyway, this was fun to write. I actually had planned on posting another slightly halloween/october themed story but I wasn't going to finish that one in time. This one wasn't even written until the night of the 30th but it was fun and random to write so I decided to wrap this one up and post this instead - just some randomness. Hope you guys like it. Happy late Halloween~

Creating Coincidences (Halloween Special)

Fluff

“You have got to be kidding me.”

“Oh, hey, look at us. We’re matching.”

“Are you serious right now?”

“This is funny. What a coincidence.”

“No, this is not funny.” Krystal looks from herself over to Amber. “How are you doing this?”

“Doing what? I’m not doing anything.”

“You—” Krystal purses her lips in frustration. She could feel her temper rising.

Today was Halloween. One of the best holidays of all holidays to ever exist in the world, or at least that was what Krystal thought. Halloween was one of her favorite holidays where people could just be who they want to be or what they want to be without care. Ever since she could remember, Halloween was all about costumes, parades, and sweet treats for kids and adults. Every year, there were literally hundreds upon hundreds of possible costumes to choose from. It was simply the best. At least until the year Krystal met Amber. It was Krystal’s first year in high school and Amber’s third year. The two got acquainted through a mutual friend and soon became fast friends. Now they are in college, sophomore and senior respectively, and their friendship was still going strong. Krystal enjoys Amber’s company on a daily basis and likes everything about the tomboy. All but one thing. And this thing is also what has her fuming at this very moment in time.

“You copied me! Again!” Krystal yells, pointing an accusing finger at Amber who smiles.

“What are you talking about? I didn’t copy you.”

“But—” Krystal looks at herself then at Amber. “There’s no way! I mean, I literally prepped three costumes in advance this year and even chose the most outrageous one to wear right before the party. How—...”

“I guess great minds think alike.” Amber offers then readjusts her costume a little bit.

Krystal was about to retort when their friend Luna interrupts.

“Hey guys — Oh wow! Look at your matching costumes! I love it!”

“We’re not matching!” Krystal argues.

“Really?” Luna tilts her head with a smile. “Because it looks pretty identical to me. Really unique.”

“Right?” Amber proudly pats her costume. “Not only do I get to eat my favorite food, now I get to wear it too. Isn’t that great?”

Luna laughs. “Yeah, that’s pretty amazing.”

Krystal at this point was close to pulling her hair out in frustration. Despite there being millions of costumes available to choose from, every year on Halloween since Krystal has known Amber, the older girl somehow always dresses in something that complemented her costume. Every single freaking year. Amber’s costume would always be complementary to hers. That’s six years in a row now.

In freshman year of high school, Krystal was still very much secretly dreaming of becoming a Princess despite her age and so when Halloween came around, she went as a Princess. She was decked out in a beautiful, smooth light blue gown complete with clear blue crystal heels and a silver tiara. She was all smiles and elegant until she sees Amber walking through the door. The tomboy was dressed in a light blue tailcoat with shiny silver buttons and silver braid trims, long navy blue pants with black leather shoes, a silver belt, and a navy blue sash across her chest. To top it off, she was also carrying a sword.

“Oh? You’re a Princess?” was the first thing Amber had said to her when she comes up. “What a coincidence, I’m a Prince.” She then proceeds to laugh when Krystal clearly did not look amused. “I guess today you’re my Princess and I am your Prince.”

This so called coincidence continued on into sophomore year of high school where Krystal was really into the movie ‘Grease’ after watching it in class one time. So for Halloween, she went dressed as Sandy Olsson, the female lead. She even dyed her hair blonde and spent hours curling it for the occasion. And guess what? Amber came dressed as Danny Zuko, the male lead, with her hair slicked upwards and back. Krystal was not impressed and immediately her heels to get as far away from Amber as possible.

“Come on, Sandy, what’s the matter with you? I thought I meant something to you!” Amber yells after the girl. “Sandy, you just can’t walk out of a drive-in!”

Krystal rolls her eyes at the obvious lines from the movie. Yes, she knew them by heart after watching the movie more than a hundred times and counting. “We’re not at a drive-in, Stupid!” Krystal yells back without turning around. She didn’t need to see Amber laughing at her.

Junior year of high school soon rolls around and this year, Krystal wanted to try something a little more different. Something she thought for sure no one would think of. So she went as a shampoo bottle. The shampoo one would use to wash their hair with. She thought for sure it was something unusual until Amber walks through the door and lo and behold, she was a conditioner bottle.

“Really?” Krystal had asked when Amber approached her.

“What?” Amber looks back at her innocently. “I was showering one day and thought this would be fun. Oh? Are you a shampoo bottle? Wow, hey look, we’re a pair again this year. What a coincidence.”

Krystal had a feeling that was a lie because who in the world would come dressed as a conditioner bottle just because you were showering one day and decided it was a good idea. Okay, she would... but of course that’s totally different. This can’t just purely be an accident.

Senior year of high school comes by and Krystal wasn’t really feeling into doing anything much for Halloween that year. Perhaps her still recovering from a cold had something to do with it. So with her cold and all, she decided to go as a nurse. Not a y nurse in a short, tight fitting dress but a regular, real-life nurse wearing slightly loose blue scrubs. It was a simple costume with only two pieces – the shirt and the pants. It could also be her still recovering from a cold that she wasn’t immensely shocked to find Amber come as a doctor. She didn’t even bother saying anything to Amber even when the girl tailed behind her with her stethoscope saying something along the lines of “Nurse, nurse, let me treat you, I’m a doctor.”

And so senior year of high school went and freshman year of college came. This was Krystal’s first year in college and she wanted to do something cool. Something that was a throwback to when she was younger but was also still popular today. So she prepped her costume and when Halloween rolled around, she walked in proudly with her red and white baseball cap, green gloves and t-shirt, signature short sleeve blue button jacket with white sleeves, blue pants, and sneakers. She even hid her hair underneath her cap and wore a wig. She was going to be the best Ash Ketchum this year there ever was and was happy when no one else had shown up in the same costume. Then Amber showed up. As Pikachu. A very cute Pikachu but Krystal was never going to admit that.

“Seriously?” Krystal says as soon as Amber walks up to her.

Amber smiles and holds out a finger. “Pika-pika.”

Krystal felt her eyes twitch and she wondered why Amber couldn’t just come as something cool like a superhero or something. There were plenty of costumes to choose from so out of all of them, why did she have to come specifically as a Pikachu? Not any other Pokémon either but Pikachu. The very first Pokémon Ash ever has and is usually always by his side. When Krystal questions Amber on it, the tomboy only shrugs at her then smiles her signature goofy smile.

Which brings things back to the present day, sophomore year of college Halloween and Krystal finds herself face to face with Amber in a matching costume. She thought she was going to switch things up a bit for fun this year, but standing before her in the same exact costume was Amber. Taco to Taco. It cannot get any more coincidental than this.

What boggles Krystal’s mind even more was the fact that she didn’t pick a specific costume until the very last second. So there was no way Amber would have known. Because right before the party, she was literally standing in front of her bed with three very different costumes laid out on it. A Doc Brown, or Dr. Brown, costume from the ‘Back to the Future’ movie. A red riding hood costume from the Little Red Riding Hood story. And a taco costume. Yes, it’s random. But random is good when it came to Amber.

“Come on, just pick one, we’re going to be late,” Luna who had stopped by with her boyfriend to pick the younger girl up had whined next to the girl.

“Give me a sec, I’m thinking.” Krystal purses her lips and taps her chin in thought.

“Just pick one. Does it really matter?”

“Yes it does. I need to pick one that Amber won’t expect...”

“I think the Doc Brown costume is pretty cool. You should go as that,” Luna suggested.

“Yeah... but then Amber might come as Marty McFly... or maybe Doc Brown’s welding goggles.”

“What? Welding goggles is not a costume. She can’t be that, it wouldn’t make sense.”

Krystal purses her lips. Luna had a point. “But this is Amber we’re talking about... she does weird annoying things all the time.”

“Well, that part isn’t a lie...” Luna taps her chin. “What about the red riding hood costume? Looks pretty y, you could attract them boys.”

“Yeah... but then Amber might come as the wolf and scare them away.”

Luna sighs and puffs out her cheek. “Then what about the taco costume. You have all the ingredients on the costume so it’ll be hard for her to come as any of the ingredients. Now can we go?”

“That’s true...” Krystal scratches her head. “Do you think she’ll come as the sauce? Like the hot sauce or something?”

“Oh my god, dear lord have mercy! Just pick one already!” Luna throws her head back and cries out impatiently. “She’s not gonna know!”

“Okay, okay. Jeez, calm down. I just don’t want us matching again because I’m tired of people thinking we planned it or something.”

After a few minutes more of deep contemplation, Krystal eventually settled on the taco costume. It was the most unusual one and the chances of Amber having food related costumes just lying around the house seemed lower compared to the other two costumes.

“Okay, taco costume it is,” Krystal nods approvingly to herself and picks up the said costume to change into.

“Finally. I think I aged 60 years waiting for you,” Luna says and Krystal only rolls her eyes.

Back at the party, Krystal was still having a hard time comprehending how in the world Amber came dressed in the same exact taco costume as her. She really thought she had escaped Amber’s so called coincidences and the tomboy’s inability to be creative for Halloween. But boy could she not have been more wrong.

“Isn’t this great?” Amber had continued on like nothing was wrong.

Luna who was enjoying the show decided it was her time to leave. “I should get back to my date now. You two lovely tacos have fun. Don’t get too saucy now~” Then with a wink, the girl turns on her heels and walks away.

Krystal glares at the back of the retreating girl’s head wishing for once that looks could kill. Or hurt.

“Come on, it’s not that bad right?”

“Not that bad? You call copying me every year not bad? Don’t you have any originality?”

“Well,” Amber scratches her head, “technically I didn’t copy you. I just happen to wear similar, complementary costumes to yours out of pure coincidence. It’s not my fault people think we’re an item or that we match.”

“We’re definitely not an item,” Krystal retorts without thinking much.

“Why not?” Amber asks. “Don’t you think we’d be good together?”

It was a fairly simple question and it took a moment for Krystal to register it. Once she did, she almost chokes on her spit.

“What?” Krystal asks. “Us?”

Amber nods with a smile and Krystal almost chokes on her spit a second time.

“I think we would make a good couple, don’t you think?”

Krystal chokes on her spit. Any annoyance or frustration she had towards Amber today seemed to have dissipated before she could even blink. As a matter of fact, all those years of annoyance and frustration seemed to have evaporated in an instant because of one statement that honestly didn’t mean anything.

“We’re not a couple,” Krystal finally manages to say.

“Yet.”

Krystal could feel her heart beating faster with each passing second. She was really confused not just by what she thinks Amber is saying but also by her own body’s reaction.

“Come on Krys, did you really believe all those years were simply coincidences? Accidents?”

Krystal tilts her head. “No...” she carefully says, “...Maybe? I don’t know... But I know for sure you were trying to annoy the heck out of me.”

At that Amber laughs. “Really? Annoy you? You really thought that this...” Amber gestures between the two of them, “...this is me annoying you?”

“Yes...” Krystal hesitantly replies.

“So you thought me dressing up as a Prince or Danny Zuko was because I wanted to annoy you?”

“...Yes...”

“But you know I’m not a big fan of cheesy Disney Princess movies and that I hate ‘Grease’. Why would I dress up as Danny Zuko if I hated the movie?”

“Well...” Krystal clears a little, “to annoy me?”

Amber shakes her head and chuckles. “So you’re saying that I dressed up as Danny Zuko from a movie I strongly dislike just to annoy you, someone who absolutely loves the movie? And I pick Halloween to do so even though I can practically annoy you every single day?”

“Yeah...” Sounds reasonable.

“You have some really strange logic...” Amber replies. She was hoping she didn’t have to just straight out confess because that would be embarrassing but it’s looking more and more like it. “Then what about your junior year of high school, when I came as a conditioner bottle?”

“You said you were showering one day and thought it would be a good idea.”

“And you believed me?”

“No... But...”

Amber couldn’t help but smile at Krystal’s cute, confused face. “Okay, let’s just go with that. Then what about when you were Ash Ketchum and I was Pikachu?”

“That’s... I...You love Pokémon though. Didn’t you tell me you had a Charmander costume too?”

“Okay...” Amber takes a deep breath then slowly lets it out. “Then what about this year? The taco costume?”

“Y-You love tacos!”

“I do,” Amber smiles, “when I’m eating it.”

“So what exactly are you trying to say?”

Hearing that, Amber couldn’t help but laugh. “I got to give it to you, Jung. I knew you were slow but man, you are really slow.”

“Hey—”

“I like you.” Amber cuts the younger girl off. “And before you say anything, let me clarify. I like you like you. Romantically. As in, none of this was a coincidence.”

It takes a while before Krystal processes the confession and she immediately feels her face heat up. “So you mean to say that all these years... weren’t coincidences or accidents?”

“You’re catching on,” Amber replies, now clearly nervous after her confession.

“But then how did you...”

“You know I’m friends with Luna too, right? And that I’m really close with her boyfriend?” Amber rubs her neck and looks down. “They told me what you were going to be all those years. This year too. They texted me right after leaving your house.”

Krystal stares at Amber. She should’ve known. At one point, she was suspicious of her best friend but when she confronted Luna, the girl had adamantly denied it even to the point of looking like she was about to cry. Ohh, she’s good, Krystal thinks to herself.

Amber watches Krystal’s forehead go through a couple of different emotions and couldn’t help but find the girl extremely cute. She really wanted to hug the girl and judging by the fact that she just confessed and Krystal was more caught up with the whole ‘who told on her costumes’ part than her, perhaps she could close some distance between them. So with that, Amber bravely steps forward a few inches.

Krystal notices and immediately tenses as her costume comes into contact with Amber’s costume. All this time, she thought Amber had purposely dressed in matching costumes to annoy her. She even dubbed Amber her Halloween archenemy. And you don’t date your archenemy. That’s not how the story goes. But strangely enough, she didn’t mind Amber standing so close in front of her. In fact, she felt tempted to close the gap between them even more.

“You look beautiful tonight.”

Krystal blushes at the comment. “I don’t particularly feel that way... you know, taco costume and all.”

Amber gently brushes Krystal’s hair aside. “You look beautiful in anything.”

This made Krystal smile. It couldn’t get any cheesier and cliché right now but surprisingly, she was enjoying it. Normally, she would’ve gagged or punched someone by now. Perhaps she’s immune from watching too many romantic movies.

“Can I kiss you?” Amber suddenly asks.

Krystal blinks, not sure if she heard Amber right. “I’m sorry, what?”

“Can I... kiss you?”

She must be hearing things wrong. “I’m sorry, what?”

“Kiss,” Amber points at her own lips then points at Krystal’s lips, “You. Can I?”

Krystal opens to reply but only a puff of air came out. She could feel all the heat just rushing to her face and was sure the missing sauce on her taco costume has just been found. In the form of her face.

Amber was grinning widely at her at this point and Krystal racked her brain for a coherent response but nothing came out. Only embarrassment and anticipation.

“You— I— We—” Krystal tried again but nothing.

“Are you taking English 101 this semester?” Amber chuckled at the cute reply.

Krystal purses her lips and tries again, forcing her mind to think of something to say. But it was useless. Nothing was popping up. And then there was Amber. Being all adorable, cute and smiley in her taco costume. So before Krystal knew, her hands reached out on their own, grabbed Amber by the shell, and pulled her in for a kiss.

Due to the force, it ended up being a rather hard, sloppy kiss that barely lasted for more than five seconds.

After parting, they looked at each other.

“So I guess you’re taking Kissing 101 this semester too, huh?” Amber teases.

Krystal rolls her eyes and pulls the tomboy in for another kiss. This time, it wasn’t a forceful kiss but rather a slow and deep kiss, one where they nibbled on each other’s lips a couple of times. When they parted for a second time, Amber was a little out of breath.

“Wow...” Amber grins crookedly, “I think we just skipped right over Kissing 101 and went straight into the Advanced Kissing course. Do you have a partner in that class? Cause you know, I’m currently looking for one and if you don’t have anyone, why don’t we become partners? I’m sure you’d help us get an A in the class no problem.”

Krystal laughs and pulls Amber closer. “Shut up,” she says before closing the gap between their lips once again. Who knew she would like kissing Amber so much. Any walls she ever had around her had crumbled and all she wanted was to be in Amber’s embrace.

They were probably on their sixth or seventh kiss when someone clears their throat next to them.

“My, my, looks like you guys did get all saucy.” It was Luna and her boyfriend. “Mind taking a break for a moment? I don’t really want my eyes or my boyfriend’s eyes to rot from the inside out tonight.”

“Ha. Ha.” Krystal laughs dryly as she pulls back from Amber and readjusts her costume.

“Man, you have no idea how long she has been waiting to kiss you,” Luna’s boyfriend says and Amber’s face immediately turns beat red.

“Is that right?” Krystal looks at Amber with a loving smile and the tomboy’s head just seems to shrink deeper and deeper into her costume.

“Anyway, we just came over to tell you guys, they’re taking couple photos over in that corner.” Luna gestures to the other side of the building. “Judging by the looks of things, I think you guys can join us this year. Up for it?”

Hearing someone else confirm things about them was weird but both Amber and Krystal nod.

Luna chuckles. “Surprisingly, you guys do look kind of cute both dressed as a taco and all. It’s weirdly quite a fitting look for Amber.”

Krystal rolls her eyes and Amber laughs.

“Why thank you. I shell accept your compliment,” Amber says with a toothy grin.

Everyone stares at Amber.

Shell. Shall. Get it?” Amber looks back and forth between Luna and Krystal who seemed unamused. “Cause you know, I’m a taco,” she adds.

There was a moment of silence before Luna and Krystal both turn and walk away with Luna dragging her boyfriend behind her who was giving Amber a thumbs up.

“Hey, where are you guys going? That was funny, right?” Amber yells after them. “Hey, I’m tacoing to you!” She then cracks up at her own puns.

“Oh my god. You are such a weird dork!” Luna yells back.

My weird dork,” Krystal adds with a laugh as Amber runs up behind her and picks her up from behind.

All this time, who knew these coincidences weren’t just pure coincidences but someone hard at work creating their own destiny. A Halloween archenemy that found a way deep into the younger girl’s heart, planting small seeds that slowly grew and blossomed into something beautiful before Krystal even realized. It was unexpected yet magical. Halloween magical. And as Krystal listens to Amber’s laughter behind her, she couldn’t be happier that Amber decided to create these coincidences. Coincidences that she will treasure for the rest of her life.

“I like you too, Amber,” Krystal breathes out quietly and as if on cue, Amber’s grip around the younger girl tightens.

Create your own destiny.

Create your own path.

Because you never know, creating your own coincidences could just very well lead to remarkable outcomes.

A year later...

“I still don’t know why we have to dress in these costumes again. It’s so tight now. Why can’t we dress in something cooler like Luna’s War Boy costume from the movie ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’?”

“But I want to show everyone that I finally got my Prince.” A pout.

Amber couldn’t help but smile. “Aw, what are you talking about? You’ve always had your Prince. Since the very beginning.”

“Ooh, look at you being all cheesy and romantic.” Krystal snuggles closer to Amber who grins.

“Only for my Princess, of course.”

A gagging sound. “Okay you two, can you please stop being gross back there? Because it’s getting really uncomfortable for the rest of us up here.”

Amber and Krystal laugh and give each other a quick peck on the lips.

“Okay, seriously. If you do that again, I’m kicking you out of this car. You can walk the rest of the way to the Halloween party on your own.”

“Alright, alright. Relax, Luna. Don’t get your war-ry pants in a bunch. It’s not really furiendly at all,” Amber replies with a snicker.

Krystal looks at Amber. “Hm, that’s not really a good one... But still kind of funny if you think about it.” She then pats Amber on the head for her decent attempt at making a pun out of Luna’s Halloween costume this year.

“Yeah, you’re right,” Amber smiles then purses her lips in thought, “What about—”

The car stops.

“Get out.”

fin.
