BEST I EVER HAD

Kim Kibum took a deep breath before closing his last luggage. He then sat at the edge of the bed as he looks around the room… the room where he stayed for more than three years… the room he’ll be leaving for now.

He washed his face with his palms to clear his mind as he stood up and gathered his luggage. Pulling it towards the open door, he glances back at the room for the last time feeling regret… but he then closed it.

“Hello mom?” Eun ji closed the folder she’s holding as she started gathering her things.

“Darling have you heard about Kibum?”

“Yes mom… that’s why I’m going home now!” Eun ji happily replied as she now took her bag and headed to the door. It’s five in the afternoon… the earliest time that Eun ji goes out of the office for almost a year as she would usually go home past eight in the evening.

“I’m very happy for him darling! Send my congratulations! This calls for a celebration am I right?”

“Sure mom I’ll tell him! I’m planning to prepare dinner for tonight mom.” Eun ji replied as she waves goodbye to her secretary as she headed to the elevator, excited to go home for her husband.

“He’s home?” Eun ji was surprised to see her husband’s car parked in the garage.

“Is Kibum around?” Eun ji asked one of the servants that welcomed her.

“Yes lady.”

Eun ji just nodded as she suddenly got curious why was he home early.

“Sweetheart I’m home!” Eun ji happily exclaimed as soon as she entered the front door. A smile crept on her face upon seeing her husband sitting on the living room.

“Sweetheart, congratulations! I’m so happy for you!” Eun ji continued to exclaim as she walked towards him and sat on his lap with both of her hands circling his neck.

“I knew you’ll win the bidding! I was so happy when I received the news that Lockets Construction got the contract to construct Five Star Seoul hotel!” Eun ji then kissed his cheeks happily.

But it made her notice something… her husband’s blank expression. Ever since she entered, he was showing his blank face. he didn’t bother to move and welcome her making her walk towards him and sit on his lap… he also didn’t bother to hold her while she’s sitting on his lap… and he seemed to give her a cold shoulder.

“Kibum, is there something wrong?” Eun ji asked as she loosens up her hug on his neck.

Key on the other hand suddenly felt a thug on his heart…. Her happy face, her eye smile… she’s showing it now… it suddenly made him feels regrets once more… but he have to do this.

“Sweetheart…” Eun ji called him in almost a whisper voice.

Key gulped before glancing at his right side, making Eun ji follow his gaze. Eun ji’s eyes widen upon seeing what was in there… his luggage.

“Kibum what is the meaning of this? What’s wrong?” Eun ji suddenly felt a lump on as she stands up from his lap. He then did the same.

“Eun ji… I’m leaving.” Key started as he walked towards his luggage.

“Wait… what do you mean?! Leaving for what?” Eun ji is feeling confused now… what’s going on?

“Eun ji… I need to do this… to know if we can still fix this marriage.” Key’s reply made Eun ji’s eyes widen.

“Fix this marriage?! What are you talking about Kibum?! Please… please tell me…” Eun ji seemed not to understand what he’s talking about…. But she has this great feeling that he’s leaving her… which brought tears in her eyes.

“Eun ji… we’re married for three years… but I don’t know what’s going on now…. I feel like this marriage is falling apart.” Key tried to explain it with just a simple subtext as she pulled the handle of his luggage and locked it, ready for him to pull it any time.

Eun ji’s tears started to stream down her face as she realizes why was he leaving.

He feels like their marriage is falling apart.

“Sweetheart, tell me what’s wrong with this… let’s fix it… we’ll fix it… I’ll fix it… tell me….” Eun ji pleaded as she took steps towards him to hold his arm.

Key can’t take seeing his wife crying… but there’s a part of him that kept on saying that he needs to do this.

“Eun ji…. I know that you know what’s wrong between us now… stop acting like you don’t.” Key said with authority as he pulled his arms from her.

“Sweetheart….” Eun ji whispered as she tries to wipe away her tears but it kept on coming.

“I’m tired of being your second priority…. Or even third priority Eun ji...” Key cut her off as he again, got hold of his luggage’s handle.

“What are you talking about Kibum?! You have always been my first priority Key! Always have and always will! You’re my husband Kibum!” Eun ji defended as she sees a clear picture of what has really gone wrong between them.

“Yes Eun ji, I’m your husband… but when was the last time you became my wife? Last month? No…. that was because of your mom’s birthday… let me think…. A year ago? Year and a half? I lost count.” Key sarcastically replied as he even made sure to have an eye contact to her.

Deep inside, he feels really bad… seeing her cry this way makes him want to pull her into his embrace…. But he can’t… he have to stand by his decision… and he knows that his words hurts her big time… but if it’s the best way to let her know it… then it is.

“Kibum please stop… please…” Eun ji suddenly felt like her knees got weaken making her sit on the floor. She feels like she’s being stabbed a thousand times by his words.

“Eun ji… today’s event actually means nothing… I… winning the bidding is nothing compared to those times I prepared and gave my heart out to prepare for our second year anniversary, third year anniversary…. I even felt like a fool following what one of my employee said about celebrating the 1200^th day of marriage… but what happened to each of those days? Should I reiterate it again?” disappointment obviously draws not only on Key’s voice but also his face… recalling everything makes things complicated.

Eun ji closed her eyes, hoping not to hear his words… hoping that everything is just a part of a nightmare… but it’s not… it’s reality… and hearing him counting those times that she made huge mistakes on him making her want to hurt herself by what she did to her husband.

“I’m sorry sweetheart… I’ll make it up to you… I pro-“

“Enough of your empty promises Eun ji… I’m tired of hearing those… I’m going.” Key cut her off as he started to take a step towards their main door while pulling his luggage… leaving his crying wife on the floor.

“Kibum please….” Eun ji said in a whisper as she buried her face on her knees…. But she’s still seeing the sight of her husband’s shoes, walking out of their abode…

Upon hearing the door click... it made Eun ji burst into more tears…everything seemed to pour into her now… all that she have done wrong… she made one of the biggest mistake in her life as a wife…

She took her husband for granted.

Key closes his eyes as he leaned over the door…. Obviously hearing his wife’s cry…. He badly wants to return and console her in his embrace… but he knows that if he’ll do it… it means like he wasn’t standing on what he said… and beside…. He knows that they both need this space… this time to contemplate whether they can work out this marriage.

The maids suddenly felt a heavy heart seeing their lady sitting on the floor, hugging her knees while crying… it’s the first time their seeing her in this state. As much as they wanted to come over her, console her… they know that they have to give her time to be by herself.

“I’m sorry sweetheart… I’m so sorry….” Eun ji whispers as she continues to sob… if only Key can hear his weep.

Her perfect fairytale that she thought she had started three years ago seemed to be gone like a wind in front of her very eyes…

Her husband….

Gave up on her.
