Lesson 6

Lessons of the Heart

“Daisy, I think I love you too.”

It was like a bomb being thrown at her feet and Daisy felt dizzy for a while. Lee Jinki was telling her he loved her. She blinked her eyes still in shock and without knowing what to do or say. No one ever told her those words and she clearly wasn’t expecting him to say them.

“Daisy, did you hear me?” he asked looking at her with his small cute eyes that had dark circles under them, probably for not sleeping the previous night.

“I’m so confused right now…” she mumbled revealing her thoughts out loud and making Jinki open his mouth without knowing what to say.

Then it hit her. Daisy knew what he was doing. The contract…

“Is this a lesson right now?” she asked upset, a sad smile appearing on her face.

“No!” he answered seeming offended. He moved a hand through his hair and bit his lower lip revealing that he was nervous and lost. Was it even possible for Lee Jinki to feel lost and not know what to say?!

Daisy couldn’t help but notice his slightly pink cheeks when he opened his mouth to talk again.

“I do love you.”

“Are you sure? Are you teasing me right now? I don’t find it funny when people play with my feelings!” she said upset clutching the strap of her bag.

“No! I mean it!” He said it touching his chest giving more intensity to his words, his eyes not leaving hers, showing his sincerity.

Daisy frowned giving up and walked away leaving him watching her speechless.  He confessed and even kissed her and Daisy walks away like that?!

Jinki strolled after her, fastening his pace. Daisy almost flew to her class, too afraid to admit she didn’t want to face Jinki and her feelings, the warm and sweet taste of his lips still lingering on hers. Did that really happen?

She walked inside the classroom and sat on her usual spot ignoring everyone. She saw him, from the side of her eyes, sit right behind her, as he always did.

“Pst…Daisy…” he called her but she ignored him. He touched her shoulder softly trying to get her to look at him, but nothing.

Jinki didn’t give up and kept touching her and calling her name through the first half of the class. Daisy breathed slowly trying to calm herself and closed her eyes.

“Daisy…” Jinki called again and she opened her eyes immediately because she couldn’t help but imagine his lips moving every time he talked.

She looked back startling him and Jinki smiled so cutely that she almost didn’t do what she was intending to do.

“STOP!” she screamed making everyone stare at them. She didn’t care and looked to the front again. It worked since he stopped annoying her, sulking on his chair.

Even though no one was annoying Daisy any more she couldn’t keep attention to class since she was replaying the kiss on her mind over and over again. She was trying to find the right words to define the way his lips tasted, how to describe the way they were so soft and warm and how much her heart pounded when they were kissing. Was that even healthy?!

When class ended she was relieved and run outside right away. She wasn’t surprised to see Jinki following her.

“What are you doing?” Daisy asked when he appeared by her side walking as fast as her.

“Following the girl I love!” he said it so loud that some students heard it. One of them, an idiot that was at the party, even screamed.

“NICE ONE DONALD!”

Daisy stopped blushing. She didn’t know if she should smile or scream with him. Jinki watched her, his smile slowly disappearing when he noticed the way her eyes dangerously frowned at him.

“ARE YOU CRAZY? IS THIS A JOKE FOR YOU?”

It was her most secret feelings. For once in her life she loved someone and it was such a scary feeling. She felt in front of his eyes. He was her biggest weakness now and she was so scared.

Daisy walked away, outside the building, and he followed after her. Jinki wasn’t going to give up on her.

“I’m not joking! What can I do to prove to you I’m being serious?” he asked when Daisy stopped in the middle of the sidewalk looking at him, feeling lost, not knowing where to run away and hide. She needed to be alone as she always did before, and think.

Jinki watched her confused expression and grabbed her arm gently pulling her to him.

Daisy stared up at him with eyes wide opened before he crushed his lips against hers; all students watching them.

She pushed him away and looked around her; everyone was staring at them. Everyone witnessing her fragile side, faces smiling or laughing at the new side of Daisy; some even whispering how she finally found someone who liked her. Daisy looked back at Jinki and he realized he made a mistake when he saw her wet eyes and humiliated expression.

“I-I’m sorry…I just wanted to show you I was serious….”

“I HATE YOU!” she yelled before storming away and pass by Jonghyun who didn’t make a gesture to stop her since he was too heartbroken with what he just saw.

Jinki didn’t move from his spot.

The library was Daisy’s favorite place to hide. She knew this perfect spot where she would seat and no one would see her there because it was where the oldest books were stored. Who cared about a bunch of dusty old books on the second floor?

She spent the last two hours crying or just spacing out thinking about what she was going to do now. Would she even be able to get outside and face all the teasing smiles and eyes watching her every move? Worst, would she be able to resist Jinki? Did she want to resist him?

Daisy leaned her head against the bookcase. She skipped her afternoon classes to be there hiding and wondered if Jinki was worried or if he forgot about her already and moved on to another girl, maybe the one from the party. Just the thought made her so upset she felt like stomping her feet on the floor.

The idiot! He always could make her feel confused. Daisy was so happy because he said he loved her and even kissed her in front of everyone but at the same time….

Daisy never opened her heart to anyone. She was always a rock, hiding behind her studies saying everything was fine even though she hurt so much inside. In the end she was afraid, always afraid to show herself, to get hurt…but Jinki destroyed all her defenses.

Jonghyun sat by Jinki side on the bleachers, tired to see his friend sulking.

“Are you worried with Daisy?”

“Yes. I tried calling her but her phone is off and she isn’t home. I checked…”

“I know where she is. I know her hiding place.”

“You do?” Jinki grabbed Jonghyun black coat desperately and the shorter man hit his hands away. “Tell me!”

“I will…but first I need to tell you something!”

Jinki nodded and gave all his attention to Jonghyun who just sighed. Daisy liked that kind of guys? It was funny!

“Daisy is my oldest friend. She is…..complicated. She is the sweetest and caring person ever but at the same time she hides herself behind a fake toughness and rudeness.”

“I know. She is just like someone I know very well. Everyone has a way of hiding their heart…”

Jonghyun watched the change on Jinki, behind all his dorkiness and cuteness was a very manly and intelligent man. He was used to hide, just like Daisy.

“Daisy is afraid! She lives to others expectations trying to do her best to please her family. In the end she doesn’t know to make herself happy.”

“I love her Jonghyun. I’m serious. I’ll make her happy! Don’t worry!”

“You should be serious, because if you hurt her I’m going to kill you!” Jonghyun eyed him dangerously.

“You like her too…”

“I do. I can’t lie anymore and I think she needs to know. I’m going to confess.” Jonghyun declared, playing with his hands while he stared straight ahead. “This secret love lasted for years but she doesn’t see me as more than a friend, a brother…I know that.”

“But you need to tell her. I understand!”

“Good!” Jonghyun looked away embarrassed before standing up. “She hides on the library, second floor, old medicine books hall…I’ll wait for her outside to walk her home I’ll give you one hour!”

Jinki watched Jonghyun climb down the bleachers and he stood up immediately stretching his arms and staring at the sky.

His princess was waiting for him, hiding herself in a tower, behind a pile of old books and he needed to save her.

30sem2c.jpg

Daisy yawned and looked at the books tiredly, her eyes almost closing; all the emotions from the day were making her lose all her strength. That’s when she noticed very familiar eyes between two books on her right side.

She shrieked and moved away, lying on the floor until she realized it was Jinki.

He smiled and bypassed the bookshelf siting in front of her on the floor.

How did he find out where she was?!

“Hi princess Daisy!” Jinki said in front of her with his legs open. She looked at him and her eyes set on his crotch before moving away embarrassed. Jinki noticed and chuckled closing his legs.

“So…you like hiding here….” He looked around him staring at the ceiling in the end.

“Wow! The ceiling his beautiful!” He never noticed how old the library building was and how it had beautiful swirls and stars painted on the ceiling.

Daisy bit her lip trying not to answer back but she couldn’t ignore him.

“You are blind!” she whispered upset and crossed her arms.

He smiled, showing his front teeth looking like a bunny .

“Hello sunshine….” He answered being ironic, his eyes not leaving her face and making her uncomfortable.

He leaned closer, his hands on the floor so he could get nearer her and stare at her eyes and lips.

Daisy started to burn again. He was getting on her nerves because he knew exactly what to do to make her step out from her comfort zone.

Jinki opened his mouth to talk but instead he stared at her, the smile disappearing from his face.

He started to sing softly, the same song from the party and she watched him without saying a word.

“Right now, as you are next to me daydreaming

With excited heart, I quietly take a peek at you and remember you in my heart

It may be love, or otherwise it's inexplicable.

This road that we are walking together, not just ending again as a memory, but will be

Preserved like today forever”

“Why do you sing so well?”

Daisy asked interrupting him and letting her heart beat once again.

Jinki didn’t smile and sadly looked at her. It was something new to Daisy. There was pain inside his eyes and she couldn’t help but want to share the burden with him.

“I used to sing before. It was my dream. I always wanted to sing and move others; there isn’t anything more beautiful than that. At least until I meet you.”

Daisy tried to ignore his cheesy comment.

“You still can follow that dream…”

“No. I gave up on it!”

“Why?”

“Things happened…I had to move and start working part time. Now I’m going to finish college and have a nice well paid job like normal people have.” He smiled but it was fake.

“Jinki, from what are you running away from?” Daisy asked, crossing her legs, his expression changing, making Daisy realize she hit the bull's eye.

“Daisy, from what are you hiding away?” he asked back, not a trace of his usual smile.

She didn’t answer and he leaned forward touching her cheek, slowly approaching her. Daisy didn’t move and watched him get so closer to her that his lips brushed against hers.

Jinki was going to kiss her and she closed her eyes.

He watched her, caressing her skin softly, his lips teasing hers, moving closer and suddenly moving away making her go after him, as if there was a magnetic force joining them.

Jinki smiled happy that he proved something to himself and her and kissed her forehead quickly.

Daisy opened her eyes and looked at him confused.

“Lesson number 3: Your body can never lie. You want me Daisy…You love me…”

She blushed so much he thought she was going to explode. It was cute!

Suddenly she hit his chest pushing him back and he fell with his on the floor.

She stood up upset and walked away from the hallway leaving him alone.

Jinki quickly rose up and walked after her.

Daisy accelerated her pace and they almost run in the middle of the bookcases. That’s when the library lady walked by them with a pile of books and frowned. Daisy slowed down and he almost bump into her, both pretending nothing was wrong, just like two kids caught being naughty.

Daisy stopped and looked back at Jinki checking if he was still following her. Quickly, he grabbed one book and pretended to read, leaning casually against a bookcase. However the book was upside down and Daisy couldn’t help but chuckle.

Jinki noticed his mistake and joined her, giggling.

“Nice one…idiot!” she stated covering . Jinki grabbed her hand and pulled Daisy after him, back to her secret hideout.

“Let’s make this our hideout!” he declared, whispering so no one could hear them. “I know you don’t mean it when you said you hated me...”

She tried to speak but he covered making her eyebrows rose.

“….but when you said you hated me it hurt so much!”

He truthfully seemed in pain and Daisy took his hand away from .

“I love you Daisy and I know you love me. I also know you can’t talk about what you feel and it’s ok. I can wait until you can open up to me. In the meantime, every time you feel sad or needy, and want me to talk with you, or hug you or just kiss you…we can meet here. I’ll know. You don’t have to say anything because I’ll know you love me and you need me.”

“Why?”

“Because here no one is watching you, in here you can be yourself without being afraid. The old dusty books don’t talk…so it’s only us in our own world.”

His hand moved to her cheek again and Daisy saw herself step closer to him, so close, their chests where almost touching. Jinki leaned down and she saw how his eyes were set on her lips. He was going to kiss her and she closed her eyes.

She wasn’t wrong this time, and Jinki kissed her softly. Following that kiss he kissed her again, and again, and she stopped thinking about it and how her hands traveled automatically to his neck, while he pulled her against his chest by her waist.

Daisy stepped into another world and the ticket to enter it was kissing Jinki.

30sem2c.jpg

Jinki walked by Daisy’s side all the way outside the library building. Their hands brushed against each other, a tinge of red on her cheeks; the same color of his lips.

They stopped outside the building and Jinki looked at her with a serious expression.

“I have to go now, but Jonghyun will take you home. He is waiting!”

Daisy was so lost in Jinki she didn’t even notice Jonghyun, a few steps away.

“Why?”

“He needs to talk with you. I’ll see you tomorrow.” He didn’t show any intention to leave and looked at her for a while before saying it casually; as if it was something normal to him “I love you.”

Daisy saw him leave without answering back. She wondered if they were dating, since they were inside the library, “hiding” for half an hour, part of it kissing.

At one point he turned her around, against the bookcase, leaving no space between them. His hands didn’t touch her, supporting his body against the bookcase, in each side of her. Daisy rested her own hands against his chest. However, his lips never left hers; only for short moments when he let Daisy catch her breath.  Even then he would watch her intensely while she panted staring up at him, wondering what he was thinking. They didn’t talk again and he just kissed her until Jinki decided it was time to go home.

Daisy was worried now. It never occurred to her that he was probably thinking about how inexperienced she was. Maybe he even found her foolish...

Jonghyun greeted Daisy and both walked in silence to the bus stop.

“Where is your bike?”  She asked trying to stop thinking about Jinki.

“Home!” he lied. His bike was on the parking lot, but he wanted to take Daisy home. Later he could come back and take the bike home.

“Let’s go then!” Daisy said touching her hot cheeks sensing that Jonghyun knew what happened inside the library.

He knew and he was trying to ignore the effort she was making to act normal and the way her lips were red because she was kissing another man a few minutes before.

30sem2c.jpg

They walked all the way from the bus stop back home but Jonghyun asked her to make a detour and stop by the old playground where they used to play as kids.

Daisy sat on one of the swings right away, driving her body backward with her feet making the swing move.

Jonghyun sat by her side, on the other swing watching her.

“We spent a lot of time here.”

Daisy nodded still having fun with the swing.

“This was also the first place I realized you were my first love.”

Daisy used her feet to stop the swing and looked at Jonghyun, while her hands grabbed the rusty cold metal rings of the swing.

He watched her reaction carefully, but he wasn’t expecting her to chuckle.

“You were my first love too.”

Jonghyun couldn’t help but feel happy and sad at the same time. Sometime, long ago he was the only person she would think about. Sadly he wasn’t anymore.

“You still are mine!” He added making the smile leave her face. He was afraid of that.  Jonghyun didn’t want to scare her away from his life or make things weird between them.

“It’s ok. I know you don’t like me that way and that you have Jinki now. I completely understand and I’ll move on.

“Jonghyun…” she released her fingers from the swing rings and touched his arm.

Daisy didn’t know what to say or do, but she didn’t want to lose him. He was her first friend.

“It’s ok Daisy. We are friends we always will be. Forever.”

Daisy looked down avoiding his eyes and Jonghyun stood up awkwardly.

“I’m really fine. I’ll keep watching you as an older brother. I’ll kick Jinki if he ever hurts you. I already told him that.”

So Jinki knew about all that. Jonghyun was probably the one who gave Jinki the location of her hideout too.

“Friends?” Jonghyun asked rubbing his neck and Daisy stood up smiling.

“Friends!”

He was thankful that she was making an effort to pretend everything was fine.

Since he didn’t move or say anything Daisy hugged him. She wasn’t a very spontaneous person so Jonghyun knew she meant that hug.

Jonghyun hugged her back softly, not wanting to hold into her too much, since he needed to let her go.

“I really like you Jong….you are my best friend.”

“I know!”

They moved away from each other awkwardly and Jonghyun hit Daisy shoulder playfully.

“Waaa….Two guys confessing in one day! Daisy is collecting hearts!”

Daisy hit him back pretending to be upset.

They walked the rest of the way back to Daisy house with Jonghyun talking nonsense like before, as if nothing was wrong.

He waved her goodbye and Daisy opened the gate of her house watching Jonghyun leave. He looked at the sky, and even though he had her back to her, Daisy knew that gesture. Since he was a kid Jonghyun would always stare at the sky when he wanted to stop his tears from falling.

30sem2c.jpg

Daisy opened her eyes and stared at the time. Almost midnight…

Should she call Jinki? Text him? Wish him good night?

He didn’t send any text and she wondered if it was normal. Don’t boyfriends act romantic towards each other? Sending mushy romantic texts to one another…

Daisy sulked and stared at the ceiling of her room.

Would she be able to send cheesy stuff to Jinki?

Even though she thought it was silly she wanted him to say something. He didn’t even asked if she arrived safely home and he knew another guy was going to confess to her. She rolled in the bed from one side to another frustrated.

Daisy moved so much she fell from the bed.

“! I hate you Jinki!”

Daisy sat up and the expression of Jinki saying he was sad when she said he hated him came to her mind.

“I’m sorry…” she whispered “I love you Jinki!”

Daisy stood in silence for a second and then got back to her bed.

She was going crazy!

30sem2c.jpg

Surprisingly Daisy was doing well at ignoring everyone’s stares or comments. Her eyes wondered around the corridors searching for Jinki. Every time she crossed a corner she would imagine him jumping after her but he didn’t show up and soon Daisy was crossing the door of her classroom.

Some classmates asked if they were dating and Daisy denied it not sure what to answer about that subject. She also needed to ask him, but he was nowhere to be found.

Jinki didn’t show up all morning and Daisy found herself entering the library and ending at their “hiding” place waiting for his smile.

She waited for him and gave up after a while, grabbing her phone and trying to call him. Unfortunately his phone was also off.

The idiot! Maybe he was really making fun of her and now he was going to give up college and let her all alone to be teased by the others.

Daisy was outside, crossing the field to check if he was at the bleachers, on his usual spot when she saw Jonghyun arriving on his bike and immobilizing it in front of her almost falling from the bike.

“Daisy…” he panted, with his face red, clearly tired from riding his bike all the way there in a worry.     “I have something…to tell you!”

“What? Are you ok?”

Maybe it was something to do with the previous day and his confession.

She paled worried about what to say to him, she didn’t want to lose his friendship; but what he had to say was one hundred times worse and her heart stopped.

“Jinki…Jinki is in the hospital!”

Chapter 10: I love this. I actually read urgent matters first before this. The themes and atmosphere are so different but both are so so beautifully written. Urgent matters makes me feel so so sinful and wicked and mature while this story brings back memories of my innocent first love in college. I should have fooled around during college instead of always trying to be nice goody girl...
You're a great author. Keep writing <3
