Leisure ProfessorSomeone cleared his throat, and the sound was followed by a forced cough.
“Hm,” Nam Taehyun made his presence known, his small eyes fixated on me as he nudged an elbow towards our classmate, Kang Seungyoon.
I was in a hurry, as I wanted to leave immediately, afraid of attention, which I was getting now.
“Hi, Byul,” Taehyun greeted, a smile on his face. I rose an eyebrow up, wondering what it was he wanted to tell me. I realized then that I had never really looked at him and that I never took the time to examine the details on his face. His V-shaped jaw was accentuated by his long hair that was parted in the middle. Both his droopy eyebrows (which became more evident when he smiled), and his small eyes reminded me of Snoopy. Overall, he carried around a timeworn and mysterious vibe that drew attention towards him. He was also quiet like me, and I had never seen him around anyone except for his friend Seungyoon.
Seungyoon, on the other hand, seemed more approachable because the boy almost always wore a smile. It helped that he always carried around his guitar, though what a Literature major was doing, bringing around a guitar, I didn’t know. His hair was another story though. I just felt off looking at his head, because his black hair was both thin and long, and they were gathered on his forehead. His hair would fall out of place sometimes, when he’d abruptly turn to a different direction, like now.
Seungyoon faced Taehyun, a pleading expression on his face.
“Hi,” the greeting from me was accompanied by a smile, surprisingly.
Taehyun spared Seungyoon a look and a roll of his eyes before he turned back to me.
“Seungyoon was wondering if you have company for lunch,” Taehyun hinted, and I merely furrowed my eyebrows as I wasn’t sure where this conversation was heading.
“He’s asking if you could be lunch buddies,” he let out a laugh, “He’s kind of shy.”
I looked at Seungyoon who refused to look at me.
“I’m fine,” I said.
“Fine as in you’re not okay with Seungyoon’s company or fine as in you’re all for it?”
“The latter,” I replied, but it seemed to me that ‘all for it’ was an overstatement. I didn’t let them know, though.
Taehyun smiled eagerly, “I’ll leave you two then.”
“You’re not coming with us?” I asked, suddenly afraid of the responsibility of spending an hour and half with an almost stranger. At least, Taehyun didn’t seem to have problems talking to me.
“I have things to do, and this oddball can’t quite ask you out himself,” Taehyun’s sentence earned him a smack from Seungyoon, though I didn’t know which part of his sentence got him such a reaction: the ‘oddball’ or the ‘ask you out’.
“I might join you some other day, though.”
I nodded, and I found it odd that I felt more comfortable in Taehyun’s presence than Seungyoon’s. Seri had mentioned that Taehyun was difficult to get along with, and I would like to argue.
“I’ll see you guys around,” Taehyun said before he gave Seungyoon a pat on the shoulder and he walked out of the classroom. I watched his retreating figure, wondering just what to say to Seungyoon.
To my surprise, Seungyoon was the first to speak up, “Where do you want to eat?”
The cafeteria was a safe choice, and we didn’t have problems settling on that. Choosing a table wasn’t difficult either, since there weren’t a lot of students who had their breaks at 1 PM, except for our class and another from a different year.
We arrived to our table with a sandwich in my hand, and a stuffed tray in both of Seungyoon’s.
He sat opposite me, and in the first few m
