Rebuilding A Life

Another week passed, a week in which LuHan felt more comfortable than ever around the little family, especially Vinson. The handicapped man had made a bit of an effort to include LuHan more, actually talking to him and greeting him in the mornings with a smile. The whole atmosphere had become more bearable on the one hand...

And on the other, it became harder. The more friendly they became with him, the more LuHan realized how selfish and horrible he had been all those years. It was a hard revelation, but one that had been building since he had first come into the Luo’s household four months prior. He could no longer justify his selfish actions and lifestyle when confronted with what his choices did to others. He truly wished he could; he wished that he could ignore the pain and the depression that his new-found conscience was causing, but it was too late for him to try and turn a blind eye to it.

With a sigh he washed the hair gel from his hands and dried them quickly on a towel before heading out of his bedroom to go downstairs and work. This had all become routine, a daily task that he had become accustomed to. The thought struck him that he only had two months left here, and a strange feeling of uncertainty filled him. He had found a niche here, found something that he could do and to be proud of, but he knew that his presence here was only a constant reminder to the Luo’s over their loss. He had to find something to fill this niche in his own life, and that honestly scared him.

What in his own life could replace what he had found here?

Stepping down into the kitchen, he pushed a smile onto his face and tried his best to hide the turmoil in his mind as he greeted Grandfather Tzu. The old man nodded to him with a bright smile, the expression unusual and giving LuHan a pause in his step as he wondered what he was so happy about, but the other man simply motioned for him to go into the dining room. “I’ve got this,” he said, motioning at the stovetop and the breakfast already sizzling on it, and so LuHan obeyed and stepped into the front room.

Mrs. Luo was setting their usual table with a smile on her face, humming quietly a song that LuHan didn’t recognize. What surprised the tall man, though, was that Vinson was beside her…

Standing.

On crutches, yes, leaning heavily on them with a hint of pain on his face, but he stood nonetheless, and LuHan couldn’t stop the gasp of surprise that escaped his mouth. The stocky man looked up at him, a small smile gracing the corners of his mouth as he took in LuHan’s shocked expression.

“Good morning,” Vinson said, and LuHan’s mouth opened and closed for a moment as he tried to wrap his mind around the fact that the other was standing. The handicapped man let out a laugh, though, and said, “You look like a fish!”

“But… you… you’re standing!” LuHan finally spat out, and Vinson laughed and leaned his weight onto one crutch so that he could lift the other to show it off.

“Cool huh?” He said, and his mom reached over to lightly smack him on the shoulder.

“Don’t be cocky,” she said, but her smile was light and he only laughed in response. As she left the room to go help with breakfast, Vinson’s eyes met LuHan’s own and the tall man could see the joyful gleam in those dark orbs.

“I’m not allowed to use them very much,” he said, a small grimace crossing his face as he turned to take a small step away from the table, crutches even but his legs a little wobbly. “The doctors said an hour a day is the maximum allowed for now, though I’m honestly not sure if I could last that long right now.”

LuHan watched him makes his slow progress over the linoleum floors, each step careful and with each step, a little wince of pain would cross over Vinson’s face, but he still made the trek stubbornly. LuHan felt happy for him, but at the same time as he watched he felt guilt wash over him in a flood. Vinson should be able to run, to play sports, to walk across the restaurant easily, but because of some idiot he had to go through this painful recovery. The stocky man reached his wheelchair, placed beside the counter in Vinson’s usual morning spot, and with a sigh he settled himself into it. He gave his crutches a longing look but propped them in the corner beside him, glancing at LuHan as he did so.

“Despite the pain, I intend to use those several times a day and I am gonna be walking on my own by Halloween dammit.” The determined set to his voice pulled a smile from LuHan, and it shook him out of the stupor he’d been in since seeing the muscular man actually s

Chapter 11: Thanks for this amazing story Tigress! I had to digest it all in one go. Some beautiful character interpretations here. I loved the major character developments for Luhan, but also for Vinson. Not sure if the addition of Fei was necessary as she only appeared twice and for very short amount too? Maybe she was more like a plot driver and someone to finally SLAP some sense into Luhan. I felt a bit frustrated that Luhan couldn't say sorry earlier, and I wanted to see Mrs Luo's reaction when he did, but to me, it seems like Vinson forgave him before Mrs Luo -- that's the impression I got. Vinson really gave him the benefit of the doubt while Mrs Luo is habitually kind, and couldn't voice her inner thoughts. I loved Grandpa Tzu anyways; he just seems to take life as it is.
Also, Luhan's awful first personality stemmed from the fact that his father held high expectations for him. He just became rebellious and drifted apart from his family. Friends do matter in your life, and you turn into the company that you surround yourself with.
I would have loved a sequel to this haha but I know it's too late for that! Anyways, beautiful story as always Tigress! You never fail to amaze me :)

Chapter 6: Wow, it's refreshing to see the subtle changes in Luhan. I never expected he would step up to ameliorate the situation with the angry customer. I'm beginning to think that Luhan's gaudy lifestyle was just his rebellious way to garner affection from his parents? It seems like he's so desperate here to gain Mrs Luo's affection. The way he tried to cheer her up in the morning, and then when he let her rest and dealt with the customer himself. Will I actually start to like his character now on? O_o
Slowly, I can see that Jimmy's death is taking it's toll on him. He's finally beginning to realise that his senseless actions had broken a very lovely and caring family.

Chapter 5: Wow, Luhan is just so petty no matter the sitation. I'm not sure if I mentioned it before but I found my favourite character in this story! It's Mrs Luo! Her patience just overwhelms me and her responses are just so endearing and full of doleful kindness T.T I just want to give her a big hug, especially when Luhan was all mean and said some nasty stuff.
The ending shows that he's undergoing a change? He spent his whole life blaming others for his mistakes and the consequences of the crash is dawning on him now.

Chapter 4: I think my hate for Luhan in this has reached its max limit lol. I can't hate him anymore but he frustrates me so bad. Vinson has every right to be angry and the family's patience baffles me a little. Maybe I'm too angry of a person to deal with a person like Luhan. Although, we do see some subtle changes and Luhan is a bit taken aback with Mrs Luo's gentle nature. Kill them with kindness, so they say. Looks like this approach might just crack Luhan's silver mirror.

Chapter 3: I'm enthralled by your descriptions in this. You bring details to the smallest of things, like the kids with the soccer ball, the shabby street and the drab restaurant, but also, your characters are so real, I fell like I can bump into them on the street. I still hate Luhan. I wonder if he will grow up at this stage but I can tell that Mrs Luo's honesty has really nailed him on the head. It's the first time I realised him becoming somewhat subservient towards anyone. Damn, he made 6 months in jail seem like a vacation haha. Spoiled brat!
On a side note, my heart just broke for Vinson. He doesn't deserve this and I can tell why he'd be so angry, to have the man who was responsible for his brother's death to sleep under his roof. Ohhhh shivers.

Chapter 2: Gawrsh *in Goofy voice*, dang, I didn't think you'd create a character that I would absolutely hate right now. I've always read stories where Luhan is portrayed as this absolutely sweet and innocent angel (I'm also guilt of that!), so its refreshing to see your take on it. I imagined myself as Luhan's dad in this lol, because everything he said was what I wanted to tell Luhan (albeit he was wayyyy more polite than what I was thinking in my head!). I'm absolutely thrilled by the emotions you've written here. From Luhan's nonchalance, to his father's disappointment, to Mrs Luo's sorrow. The writing is absolutely amazing -- but sure I've always known that about you :)

I feel like Luhan's sentence is too lax. But I applaud the judge to make him work in the restaurant. I'm just so afraid of how Luhan will treat Mrs Luo while he's there :(

Chapter 1: Oh my days. O_o so I decided to start with this story because you told me it's one of your best stories, and I was curious to see how you would approach an slice of life fic rather than fantasy. I really think I've subbed to the right fic now! I was supposed to read something light hearted LOL but it seems like I'm just drawn to the angst fic. You did a great job of creating a highly realistic and narcissistic idiotic rich boy. There were so many times where I wanted to punch Luhan upside the face, and in the solar plex. Like, how dare he make fun of his poor grandma like that!?
But yeesh that ending, his first reaction was to go and scream at someone else even though the fault was clearly his. Damn you Luhan! But yikes, Tigress, the wording, the crafting of the sentences, the descriptions and the characterisations gave me chills. I'll have to buckle because I have a feeling this will be one of the greatest fics I will encounter on AFF O_o

Chapter 11: I didn't cry much (damn my stubborn pride lol) but I've never cried more over someone else's work so you definitely got me there. *still wiping my eyes* There were some scenes which just hit so bloody hard: the last one there, Luhan finally breaking down, him calling his parents, Mrs. Luo on Jimmy's birthday, Fei's reaction to Luhan and his response, the scene in the family room, and just so many points that made me feel in good ways, even if they were somewhat sad. And I swear for the first whole half I was nothing but pissed off and irritated at Luhan so actually making him a redeemable character was a feat in and of itself. Excellent job overall my dear.

You know Twisting Paths is one of my favorites from you and that will likely stay there in the fantasy corner for sure, but this story made me feel. Oh so many feels. *still riding that roller coaster* And I can just envision that last scene in my head too. It's always kindness of some kind that undoes us when we're trying to hold it back or don't know how to react. Goodness. I feel like I should go read something fluffy but I'm not even like bad sad. It's more of a fulfilled sad since the ending itself is hopeful and good. It's just... emotional. And you got me with that line a couple chapters back where Luhan explained he didn't have the money to buy friends. And Vinson's response to why his friends didn't come by was pretty powerful too. But then you had that scene with him and his crutches and I just wanted to flail and grin like an idiot. haha

I have to wonder if Luhan will actually consider culinary school or something now that he's discovered he actually likes to cook. And if he'll keep in touch with Vinson perhaps. I don't know that I would request a sequel but it would be pretty neat to see one possible outcome of how things progress from here. I guess I'll just hope for the best here. It hardly feels worth it to mention the only thing I noticed throughout which were...

Chapter 7: And another hard hitting chapter. I really did cry this time when he found the pictures. I can't even imagine how Vincent feels but that hit close to home with all the memories and the sports and the family stuff and just... gyah! T_T Stop playing with my feels!! *not really* lol

Wonderfully done again. I loved the way that Vinson tried to play it strong and put on the brave front for his mother and grandfather but how that facade quickly fell after the fact. I liked it even more that Luhan got to see it. The insight into his inner workings also helped to get a better feel for how he's progressing and I really enjoyed reading what he could admit to himself, if no one else. And that was also really brave of Vinson too. I know it probably wasn't easy for him to get to where he's at as well. His statement of "I'm not a saint" definitely made me smile, not happily exactly, but because it's damnably difficult to try and be one under most circumstances. hah But it's progress with where they are and Luhan himself is still moving in the right direction. Nicely done.

Chapter 6: Damn you woman. His birthday? T_T Almost tears. Like legit, tightness in throat, slightly blurry eyes, and I want to just cuddle Mrs. Luo again. Okay. So maybe Luhan is working on redeeming himself, if only because a part of him that he's not really ready to admit to actually likes/cares about Mrs. Luo. I don't dislike him as much now. >.> haha

Short comment is short but this chapter hit hard. *nods*
