Min-Hee

It All Started With A Phone
Min-Hee wasn't like the other girls in her university. While most girls would talk about boys and shopping, Min-Hee found it more interesting to read the latest essays about Greek myths or historical artifacts (the type of books no one dared to touch unless it was for a school related purpose). While most girls would spend the weekend shopping with friends or go on a date, Min-Hee thought it would be more time efficient to study, or work on next month's papers (mainly because she didn't have any friends, much less a boyfriend, to do those week-end activities with in the first place).

It wasn't like Min-Hee was anti-social like "normal" nerds. Min-Hee was just... Well... A proper, British lady who came from the 1700s. Too naïve, too clueless about the modern technology (especially when it came to smart phones), dressed in clothes that wouldn't show any skin execpt for her head and hands, and she always used proper language only teachers would use and NEVER used words like "What's up, guys" or "Cool". Because of this, no one tried to be friends with her. The atmosphere around her was too stiff. And if you tried being friends with her, you would change your mind after being with her more than two minutes. Trying to strike a conversation with her was difficult because she didn't understand slang or fashion or even knock knock jokes. The boys found it especially hard to ask her out because she didn't understand "sweet talk" or what "going out" meant, and it took a long time to explain it to her because she was always b with questions about things she didn't understand. Naturally, the "normal" population of humans found it easier to just ignore her. Min-Hee was fine with that. It meant that she had more time to focus on her studies.

One fine Sunday, Min-Hee had nothing to do. She completed every assignment given for the next three months, memorized her textbooks, and read every book in every library in Seoul. Then she remembered about the latest Galaxy Note her mother, who worked for the Samsung company, gave her for her birthday. Maybe she could finally find out how to use it. It was supposed to make her life easier and more organized (according to the box).

After spending almost an hour setting everything up, Min-Hee was finally understanding how to use a smart phone. She memorized the instructions on how to use it (of course) and was figuring out how to use the navigation.

"Find a bubble tea shop," Min-Hee commanded her phone.

"Searching for bubble tea shops," the robotic voice of a Korean woman answered. "One has been found only two blocks away from your current location."

"I never knew that," Min-Hee stared at her phone, amazed.

Min-Hee soon left to go see if her phone was correct (even though it probably was).

When she arrived at the bubble tea shop, she was amazed that there were so many of her classmates in the shop. Of course they didn't recognize her at all. Who would? However, they recognized some random boy who just took less than five steps into the shop. He looked petrified at the squealing girls when they started pouncing on him like a lion after its prey. Min-Hee winced as she witnessed the start of a human tug-of-war that the boy was in the middle of.

Luckily, the boy got away safely out of the bubble tea shop with a huge group of girls behind him. Unfortunately, it seemed like he dropped his phone in the middle of the chaos on the floor. Min-Hee picked up the phone and examined it for a minute. The phone was the same model as hers. Maybe she should hold on to it until the boy comes back. Min-Hee thought as she pocketed the phone and ordered her bubble tea.

She should start coming here often because the bubble tea was FANTASTIC.

..............

Min-Hee had just finished taking her shoes off when she heard music.

"Baby don't cry~"

Those three words startled her before she realized that it came from the phone she found on the floor of the bubble tea shop. Min-Hee quickly answered the phone.

"Hello? Hello? Is this the owner of this phone?" Min-Hee asked.

"Oh yes. This is- I mean, I'm the owner of that phone," a male voice answered.

Min-Hee was shocked to find out how angelic the boy's voice was. No wonder all the girls crowded him at the coffee shop. With a voice like that, he could be a singer. (He already is!! But Min-Hee did not pay attention to idol groups. Again, she doesn't use technology often.)

Not noticing his mistake, Min-Hee continued.

"I found your phone on the floor of the bubble tea shop. Would you like to come and retrieve it?" Min-Hee asked, hoping he would say yes.

"Um, actually, can you keep my phone for a while? I can't go outside right now," the boy's voice answered.

"Ok," Min-Hee said a little disappointedly. "By the way, what's your name?"

"My name is Luhan," the boy answered.

"My name is Min-Hee. I'll take care of your phone well until you can find time to retrieve it, Luhan." Min-Hee said, careful to pronounce his name correctly.

"Ring!!!" Min-Hee's cellphone rang.

Min-Hee checked the caller ID and saw that it was her sister.

Min-Hee's older sister, Jenny (Korean name: 젠히/Jen-Hee) had graduated college last year and was studying in America. She had been accepted in Harvard Medical School in Boston a week after her college graduation. Min-Hee's family thought it was a waste to go to medical school for Jenny, who could have been an actress instead, because she was such a beauty and could spend her twenties dating and such. However, Jenny, being more of a wallflower than Min-Hee, refused and insisted to help the family. Even though their family was doing well financially, Jenny accepted the scholarship and went to Boston. Min-Hee missed her sister so much. Jenny was the only friend Min-Hee ever had, and since Jenny had been so busy studying, she rarely called.

Eager to answer her sister's call, Min-Hee thought she should cut her and Luhan's conversation quick.

"I have to go now. Bye, Luhan," Min-Hee said quickly.

Not waiting for Luhan's answer, Min-Hee ended the call and hit the "answer" button on her own phone.

"Min-Hee!" Jenny's voice filled Min-Hee with joy. "I miss you."

"I miss you too, unnie," Min-Hee said.

"Listen, can you send me the latest volume of 'Anatomy: The Brain'? I need it for one of my classes by next semester, but they don't sell the Korean version in America," Jenny asked. "Thanks, bye." Her sister hung up.

Min-Hee sighed. She was so excited that her sister called, but the conversation had ended as soon as it started.

What was she supposed to do now?

Might as well get ready for tomorrow's classes.
......

The following day, Min-Hee was extra early for her classes.

In fact, a little too early.

Min-Hee walked toward the lecture hall, but it was locked. Having nothing to do, Min-Hee pulled out her phone and started playing Dragon Flight. It was SUPER addicting and Min-Hee was having trouble with shooting the golden dragons with her Level Two bullets.

"Baby don't cry~"

Min-Hee was shocked. Where was that music coming from? Then she remembered that the same piano music played before she talked to Luhan. What was it called again? Oh yeah! A ringtone.

Min-Hee reached into her backpack and pulled out Luhan's phone and answered it.

"Hello?" Min-Hee asked.

......

Somewhere in Hong Kong, the Exo boys were sound asleep after performing at the Hong Kong Dome Festival. However, Luhan was wide awake, eager to hear Min-Hee's voice again.

"Hello?"

Luhan gulped when he heard Min-Hee's voice again. It sent butterflies in his stomach. Yet at the same time he was relieved. He didn't want anyone else to answer his personal phone. Even though he had only met (or more accurately talked to) Min-Hee yesterday, he knew that she wouldn't snoop around his phone.

Luhan looked at the notes he took yesterday from Sehun's (with the help of his assistants, Kai and Chanyeol) Korean lesson.

"H-hi, Min-Hee shi" Luhan stuttered while mentally face palming himself. He needed to practice more. Unfortunately because Kai and Chanyeol were goofing off, Luhan couldn't focus well yesterday.

"Hi, Luhan," Min-Hee said softly.

"So, what are doing?" Luhan asked, a little too cheerfully. Mistake number two.

"I'm at school right now, but I'm a little early, so I'm playing a game on my phone," Min-Hee answered. (A little?! It was two hours before her first class in 6:30 AM!)

"Which game is it?" Luhan asked.

"Dragon Flight," Min-Hee answered. "But I am not very good at it."

"Really? I'm pretty good at it," Luhan said.

"Can you teach me sometime?" Min-Hee asked eagerly.

Luhan chuckled at her cuteness. "Sure."

"By the way, when are you going to pick up your phone?" Min-Hee asked.

That question threw Luhan off the loop. He didn't know himself either. His schedule was packed with practices and performing at concerts.

"I'm not sure..." Luhan trailed off.

"Ok, then. I'll keep your phone in the meantime," Min-Hee said. "I also have another question: What is the song-I mean- your ringtone?"

Luhan gulped. Min-Hee sure knew how to throw questions that caught him off guard. How was he supposed to explain to her that he was an idol without her going crazy? Simple: not tell her, but beat around the bush.

"Do you know Exo?" Luhan asked.

"No," Min-Hee asked.

Luhan breathed a sigh of relief. One part of him was glad that she didn't know. Another part of him was disappointed and hurt. She didn't know the adorable vocal of Exo-M (aka Luhan)?!

"Oh. But they're a really popular idol group. My ringtone is their song 'Baby Don't Cry'. I think the vocal, Luhan did his best in that song," Luhan said with a hint a self-satisfaction.

"The vocal has the same name as you, Luhan!" Min-Hee giggled.

Her laughter made Luhan's heart beat faster than ever. He ignored Tao's complaints of "stop talking on the phone so early in the morning" from the next room.

"Yeah," Luhan said sheepishly.

"Are you a fan of his because he has the same name as you?" Min-Hee asked  with a slight hint of teasing.

"Yes," Luhan said, making Min-Hee giggle more.

He liked the way she would laugh. Not in a fake way, a real laugh that was as soft as her voice. More alluring. He wished he could hear her laugh without the static of the phone, and see her face-to-face.

"Ok, since you're a fan, I'll listen to Exo's songs," Min-Hee said.

"I'm good at singing their songs. Do you want to hear me singing?" Luhan asked.

"Sure," Min-Hee said.

"Baby don't cry, tonight~" Luhan's soft and angelic voice filled Min-Hee's ears.
