Weeks later.
Joon awoke from his depressed slumber, interrupted by the heavy clank of the only door. Perhaps they were here to end his misery at last. Perhaps they realized that no one wanted him, not even himself. Mir was gone. Even if he did escape, even if his country paid for him, he would still lead a life’s campaign in the army until he died. There was no rest for the wicked commoners from which he hailed.
The guard approached him, and Joon allowed slight hope to rise inside him. Was his execution near? Would he be able to see Mir again so quickly? Or would he be sent below, never to see his angel? Either way it would be a blissful end. Peace, at long last, far away from this dreadful life. At the very least he hoped they had brought some food. He was slowly starving. If his life was not to end by a blade at his neck, or poison in his veins, at the very least they could stave off this pain in his gut.
He searched the face of the guard who stalked to his door to stare at him. This one was different. He hadn’t seen him before. A baby face with quiet, inquisitive eyes. For some reason he reminded Joon of Mir with the innocence in his gaze, despite what both of them must have seen in their lives. However, there was one thing missing. This new guard had no playfulness in his demeanor, no mischievous plans that constantly formed. No, this guard was not his love reincarnate. Joon was only seeing what he wanted to see in his delusions.
Joon just wished the guard would turn and leave, to open that door and allow that small shaft of pure sunlight to exist in his world. His world was ruled by darkness and the small glow from a candle flame kept lit in the corner outside his bars. Any evidence that the outside world even existed gave him some form of hope he couldn’t truly understand. Light was life. Joon dreaded the candle flickering out, though it had yet to occur, he feared that would be the mom
